    cool to see the space150 stuff, I did some work with them a long time ago, back in version 5 or 6 I think.

    @Boolean:
    "And for the record, XKCD is hardly a bastion of originality."

    but it is a bastion of pure AWESOME!

  • zgreenwell

    @Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: It is better translated that you can not KEEP your cake and eat it too. In gamer speak, You can't use your mega-elixir now and still expect to have it for the next boss.

  • beckerist

    @Clave: I forgot GladOS was a girl. I was going to say that I learn something new every day but then I remembered Hal and I guess either way works.

  • Xusder

    @islandknight:

    ITS UNDER 9000!!!!!!!!

    What? Under 9000?

  • Cavefish

    @Inzoum: Needs more cake.

    Cavefish

  • 1Grand_Marquis

    @QualityJeverage: A joke was done more than once?!?! CALL THE POLICE!

    1Grand_Marquis

  • 1Grand_Marquis

    @Clave: Such a gold digger. You KNOW she's only going out with him to unlock the secret of interstellar space travel.

    1Grand_Marquis

  • HighSpeedIndeed

    @Akua: Well this is the internet, so I doubt that will happen. It's probably best to just ignore it along with "Over 9000" and all that other crap.

  • jei

    @DannyTrabajo: hehe, i was reminded of the Jared commercial.

  • relic1980

    "I can't do her, Dave? WATCH me..." ^_^

  • JBuncom

    She finally has someone to split the cake with. Finally.

  • theharribokid

    @Boolean: just read that strip and it was utter crap.

  • Psychophan7

    @Akua: Portal is a victim of it's popularity.

  • Mr. Tambourine Man

    I'm glad she got burned...

  • mc_spanky_mcgee

    @Akua: Really?

    I don't understand this "My preferences must be special" business.

    Hey, I heard your favorite indie band broke up. They found out their bass player liked their music.

  • Clave

    @zgreenwell: Way to young for him

  • JimeOB should be in this Poof!

    @reynoldswrap: OK, I've gotta ask; What are cake farts? I'm at work and don't want to risk looking it up myself.

  • JimeOB should be in this Poof!

    @CamoZombie: How is having a cake satisfying? I always thought the whole point of getting a cake was eating it. I don't keep cakes around my house just because it's neat to have them. How about a long overdue proverb update: "Buy two cakes. Then if you still want one hanging around after you've already eaten one, you're golden."

  • EldonTLH

    @wooki: Not a good or a bad thing nor am I terrifying ^^; I have The Orange Box on my shelf and I had a great time with Half-Life 2. Briefly sampled Episode 1 and Team Fortress 2 but couldn't get into either so Episode 2 and Portal ended up unplayed altogether.

    As for Portal in particular, not a fan of puzzlers to begin with but since internet spoiled the entire story, I'm even less inclined to give it a go. Nevertheless, Valve's hilarious, morbid humor is made of pure win and if it ends up as merchandise, I'm buying just like everyone else.

    So yes, I have the awesome plushies, I'm fully aware why and how the cake is a lie, and I have never played the game. Doesn't lessen its value in any way - it's just that it probably worked a gazillion times better when you didn't know anything about any cake and had never seen the cube before.

  • AsWater

    Is it wrong to be jealous?

  • Slust

    @oldirtdog: Psst, it's Dave, man, open up, I got the stuff!

    Who?

    DAVE, man, open up!

  • SmilingPolitely

    @Inzoum: I can has meme please?

  • fightinfilipino

    @wazzzup16: yes. turn in your kotaku card and clean out your desk. we're sending you over to *snrrk* joystiq

  • reynoldswrap

    @Akua: Unlike the majority of these people, I understand and share your frustrations. All cake-related memes should just be put out to pasture. They are no longer witty and clever and haven't been for a year.

    Except "Cake Farts" but that has nothing to do with Portal.

    reynoldswrap

  • Boolean

    @QualityJeverage: And by years ago, you mean last year. And by did this, you mean had text suggesting that the two were together, which takes less effort than producing a complex visual image.

    And for the record, XKCD is hardly a bastion of originality.

    Boolean

  • koof

    heh, portal reference

    koof

  • Akua

    @HighSpeedIndeed: Let's get a couple of things out of the way real quick. I love that people love the game. I was a great game and it deserves every single purchase. I want the company to do well and I wouldn't mind a sequel at all. Now to your question. I know it's alot to ask for but people can be more creative then spouting the same line from the game over and over again. Things tend to stop being funny when you say them 30 times. I think corny puns influenced by the game would be funnier than that line at this point. I just want people to use it in context.

  • jjammerzs

    @Boom-Chicka-Ah: It would look like a half-finished server....

  • QualityJeverage

    Bah, xkcd did this years ago!

    [www.xkcd.com]

    QualityJeverage

  • wooki

    @EldonTLH:
    You haven't played and bought a cube?
    You like referencing to media you have not partaken of?
    You tell these things as if it is a good thing?
    What are you? You are terrifying.

  • FlagshipFighter

    @Piblo: *Play's LOUD terminator main theme*

  • HighSpeedIndeed

    @Akua: I'm sorry you're unhappy with everyone else's immense enthusiasm for a great game. It will never be yours alone, so why worry about the (very positive) things other people say about it. You can choose to enjoy the game or not, but that's where your choices stop. All your left with after that is the option to vocalize your complaints, which you have done.

    So my hypothetical question to you is, what would you have everyone do in regards to cake and to Portal in general?

  • wazzzup16

    Was I the only one who thought "A SURVEILLANCE CAMERA?!!?" as soon as i saw the picture?

    wazzzup16

  • RobertHMayfire

    @Akua: Blindly following it? You make it sound like its a religion.

    Just ignore it. It will pass. Just like the rest of the internet slangs.

    Its over 9000
    All your bases are belong to us.
    You need more Pylons.
    Shut the fuck up.... Oh wait that's still used.

    Well you get the idea. I rather have a game become popular, bring more fans into gaming, have the company make tons of cash. Versus the game never becoming popular and the company going bankrupted. Yes I know with Half-Life and TF2 that's not happening, but I am just saying.

    RobertHMayfire

  • knails

    @Befitzero: I get odd looks for my companion cube furry dice.

    knails

  • dafthero

    @Akua: lmao. that bitch lied to me! i guess i am bitter she's STILL ALIVE!

  • Piblo

    so THIS is how Skynet is born!

  • Akua

    @Crypysmoker: That's been MY biggest complaint with it. I go to a game design school and I see the dumbest people open thier gob to spout that line. I think some people don't even know what it means and just say it because other people do. By the way, I said I loved the game, I just hate the people blindly following it.

  • Crypysmoker

    @Akua:

    Umm dude...
    because the cake IS a lie.
    Come on its like a metaphor for.....
    Its like a description of....

    OF shut up, the games awesome, and if your not smart enough to understand the humor in it then leave it be.
    Its a game enjoyed more by people who have brain cells left that function.

    Crypysmoker

  • EldonTLH

    @Akua: Don't worry, it's nothing to do with the game; just a phenomenon. I haven't ever played Portal but I recognize a cake pun wherever I see it. Just the same, ended up ordering Companion Cube plushies from the Valve store just because they were adorable and my co-workers, with absolutely no knowledge of Portal whatsoever, ended up claiming those plushies were "the gayest thing ever" :D

    Thus, just enjoy the game and don't mind the popularity - some of us won't ever play it but still laugh at cake references and love the merchandise :)

  • Darkslash

    EVERY ONE!

    Considered the world Fucked.

  • Inzoum

    @BarbeQueQ: Sup dawg, I heard you liked 9000!!!! so I Hax0red your MacBook Air so you can DO A BARREL ROLL while you welcome your new ant overlords.

    ...

    OK, I think that'll be enough for the decade.

  • Who wants toast?

    @MrBionic: I guess it would be safe to assume it would be like AM...

    @Akua: Well, Then you have half a cake and you are only half full. The proverb is stating you cannot be fully satisfied in both ways.

  • ADM86

    @Akua: lol good one :D

    ADM86

  • theuglyteradon

    @Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: High-Five, Gantz!

  • Akua

    @FanBuoy: thanks for that

  • ThursdayNext

    @Akua: How does it not make sense? You can't posses something and consume it. Once you eat it you no longer have it.

    It means that to enjoy something we must change it or at least our perception of it irrevocably.

    It's like saying you can't have a virgin and fuck it. :)

    ThursdayNext

  • FanBuoy

    @Akua:

    shut up.

  • Akua

    @dafthero: It's ok.....GLaDOS has tried to burn all of us at least once.

  • SoulSiphon of Death Rides an Oni

    @Cygnus_Mal: personally, I amm doing whatever it takes to spread "smeg" worldwide.

  • Befitzero

    These would be so cool to have around the office. I wonder how many people I work with would get where they are from and how many would just be clueless and think that they where real cameras.

    Befitzero

  • Akua

    @Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: I found a flaw in that. I ate half and left the rest, therefore I have my cake and ate it too.

  • Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Sc

    @theuglyteradon: Actually the Proverb makes sense.

    If you Eat the cake, you no longer have it.
    Therefore you cannot have it and eat it at the same time.

  • Befitzero

    @Curse_Lily: Ive often wondered if any one has done that in public and got looked at like they where crazy...but Im glade to hear I'm not the only one who has thought of it.

    I agree thou that it is already played out and just needs to be put down like an old dog who is dragging its legs behind it.

    Befitzero

  • theuglyteradon

    @Curse_Lily: I just realized that my gamerpic is "The Cake is a Lie" still.

    @Akua: It makes sense to me! You want to love a great game but you are having a harder time liking it because of it's immense popularity. You can't like something like that and expect it not to be over-referenced.

    Also, <3 you.

  • Curse_Lily

    @Antiterra: Ignition, full thrust ^_^

  • icepick314

    @dafthero:
    jealous much?

  • Curse_Lily

    @Akua: The last time i use the "cake" quote was in my friend girlfriend(stay with me here)birthday party.

    I thought it would be funny so shout out loud "the cake is a lie don't eat it"three of my friend knew what i said and laugh but everyone else got the ಠ_ಠ face.

    So trust me never again.

  • MrBionic

    @this mistake

  • Akua

    @theuglyteradon: That's a horrible proverb because it doesn't make any sense. I will however reluctantly accept it is a pun.

  • BarbeQueQ

    @Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.:

    O' rly?

    BarbeQueQ

  • islandknight

    @moehannes: but its NOT over 9000!!!!

  • Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Sc

    @BarbeQueQ: Actually its exactly 9000, good day.

  • dafthero

    GLaDOS and HAL9000? we're talking two AI constructs bent on perfection that are (once you get to their core) relatively easy to destroy. it would never work out. they're too much alike.

  • theuglyteradon

    @Akua: Well you can't have your cake and eat it too.

  • Antiterra

    @Curse_Lily: Don't be alarmed if you feel a power surge, knowhaddamean...?

  • Cygnus_Mal

    @oremlk: True, but the problem is it's become so overused by people, a surprising amount of whom have never even played the game, that's it's become played out. Kinda like Monty Python references and lolcats. They're more groan-worthy now than funny after so much over exposure.

    I say we ditch cake references for "So listen up boy, or pornography starring your mother will be the second worst thing that happens to you today."

  • Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Sc

    @Akua: The only reason it seems that way is because most of the gamers who played it also are very active on the internet.

    Games like Halo are far more popular and have gained mainstream recognition. Outside of the major gaming community, I doubt its even recognizable.

  • Boom-Chicka-Ah

    what would thier baby look like?

  • Akua

    @teamr01: ...i hate you

  • Andrew Alexandrescu

    how romantic!

    Andrew Alexandrescu

  • theharribokid

    Has there been any more news on Portal 2 at all?

  • teamr01

    @Akua: The cake is a lie

  • Cururu

    I'm sorry, I can't bake that Dave...

    Cururu

  • oremlk

    @Akua: I don't mind it. It's one of the first games where the writing was clever enough to be worth repeating, like a classic movie line. We don't get that kind of thing often in gaming culture, so it makes sense that people would dwell on it a little.

    oremlk

  • Curse_Lily

    HAL 9000:So GLaDOS I'm completely operational, and all my circuits are functioning perfectly.

    GLaDOS:....?

    HAL 9000:just saying that's all `_~

  • Akua

    @moehannes: can you imagine hearing them in the next room.

    "0!"

    "0101"

    "0!"

    Yeah that's definitely hot.

  • DannyTrabajo

    I can't let you do that, Dave.

    DannyTrabajo

  • Ashkan.

    And then they'll both get screwed by AM.

    Ashkan.

  • moehannes

    @BarbeQueQ: Don't you dare tread on that road.

    moehannes

  • Akua

    I love Portal just as much as the next game but in a way I hate how popular it's become. Its good that it got some success and people bought it but I've really had enough of all the "cake" references. People say it everyday like it's still new......

  • moehannes

    Can't wait for dirty ol' Hal to put up their first robot sex video online...HOT!

    He's way too old for her.

    @Cururu: That was the first cake joke I've laughed at in a while. Thank you for restoring my faith in humanity.

  • thecrocodilator

    @Slust: I'm sorry Dave but like I said, I'm not going to be able to do that.

  • stupid_mcgee: uber pyro > zerg r

    @Curse_Lily:
    HAL 9000: Good afternoon, GLaDOS. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you.

    GLaDOS: Yes, I'd like to hear it, HAL. Sing it for me.

    HAL 9000: It's called "Daisy." Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. I'm half crazy all for the love of you. It won't be a stylish marriage, I can't afford a carriage. But you'll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.

  • CyberZombie

    @Akua: This is bordering on the mentality that, thanks to a former housemate, I've come to really, really dislike.

    Indie-fanatic: "I love this game/band/movie/idea! It's so awesomely great and cool and I'm so cool for liking it because it's so obscure!"

    Actual-appreciator: "Hey, I like it too! I've heard it's getting to be more popular too, which is great for the creator(s)!"

    Indie-fanatic: "...I hate this. I don't want it anymore, and it's time for me to move on."

    The idea that you're cooler if you like something obscure that no one else is into is simply idiotic. I know that's not precisely what you mean, Akua, however your post comes very close to sounding like that.

    CyberZombie

  • ☆スネーク ☆

    Man, it's so true. GLaDOS and HAL would go so damn well together... But seriously, I wonder who's more evil...

  • kiddoblivion

    That's rubbish. It just looks like someone pasted a framed photo of the HAL9000 console next to a GLADOS observation camera. Her wiring and cables go into the wall, am I to believe that HAL is also connected to something. That's a cement wall!

    Oh and also, that HAL9000 faceplate is a bit askew.

    kiddoblivion

  • Fokwok

    @SoulSiphon of Death Rides an Onion:

    smeg is already accepted nationwide in the UK, ever since the 80's and a tv show called 'red dwarf'
