How Did Nintendo Hardware Do By Region?
Nintendo has released Wii and DSi sales figures for fiscal 2009. Let’s have a gander at the breakdown by region.
As we posted yesterday, worldwide annual sales of the Nintendo Wii hovered close to 26 million units (25.95), and the total lifetime sales for the console have surpassed 50 million (50.39).
In first quarter 2009, that means 530,000 Wii were sold in Japan, 2.5 million units were sold in The Americas and 2.15 million units were sold in Other. The next quarter, 480,000 units were sold in Japan, 2.08 million units were sold in The Americas and 2.15 million units were sold in Other. Third quarter 2009 saw a big holiday spike with 890,000 Wii units sold in Japan, 5.22 million units sold in The Americas and 4.32 million units sold in Other. Sales bottomed out in Japan big time the following quarter with 160,000 Wii units sold in Japan. The Americans and Other saw 3.14 million units and 2.13 million units sold, respectively.
Global Nintendo DS system sales reached 31 million plus (31.18), bringing the lifetime total to over 100 million units (101.78).
In first quarter 2009, 580,000 DS units were sold in Japan, 2.71 million units were sold in The Americas and 3.65 million units were sold in Other. The following quarter saw 740,000 units sold in Japan, 2.53 million units sold in The Americas and 3.52 million units sold in Other. Just as wit the Wii, the holiday third quarter saw increased sales and the DSi release in The Land of the Rising Sun: 1.96 million DS units sold in Japan, 4.3 million units sold in The Americas and 5.63 million units in Other. In the fourth quarter, 720,000 units were sold in Japan, 2.52 million were sold in The Americas and 2.31 million were sold in Other.

Comments (AU Comments | US Comments)
I want to know why can't they release a decent Star Fox tite.
Cronoedge
@Polite Society: Small country in KM2 as it is smaller than the state of California, but with about 40% the population of the US.
@interim is a biscuit: My guess is most consoles were sold in North America, not so much in South America.
And you fail good Sir, as there are 3 Americas: North, Central and South. Just 2 America continents: North and South
Grammar/Geography Nazi FTW!
@RockyRan: They had a conference for their investors. It's just the standard end-of-fiscal-year reporting.
pslong9
@Xusder: Ah. Well you guys can add stupid to the insults. Cause apparently my comment was meant for the topic poster, not for Interim.
Damn...
@interim is a biscuit: Jumping on the insult bandwagon here.
Fattest.
Not fatest.
I know, cause I'm a fatt ass and people call me that all the time, hehe. Or was it phatt? Fhat? Pffat? Fattie? Fatty fatty bo batty banana nana fo fatty?
Oh god, I'm making myself cry with my own insults! Gonna go down some McRib sandwiches...
@LllusionX now has Valkyria Chronicles, bringing sales count...: Punch Out, Klonoa, Madworld, Deadly Creatures, Excitebots. Not necessarily high profile releases, but all released recently and all are purported to be quite fun.
@ithyphallus: Not only does your joke fail on the initial level (Australia is the fattest continent), it fails at grade-school geography. There are two Americas-- North America, and South America.
@ithyphallus: Or is a matter of the Wii selling well to a bunch of fad-fucking-crazy Yanks...
I happen to be one of those Yanks, but it's ridiculous that we've bought so heavily into a system that is particularly short on polished games.

@Jake Rush: i think if you made it a ratio against total population, japan would be in the lead.
@MoeB: Prolly never. Possible copyright infrigement concerning the music in EB. It'd explain why seemingly everyone at Ninty has their hands in the pants when anyone mentions 'EB for VC' or 'Mother 3 translation'.

Do we really need any Nintendo sales charts?? Ever? You know they're doing great, and the best. I am reminded of this almost everyday. They were doing good at the beginning by getting good games out like SMG, and SSBB, but not they're sending out crap and still selling. WUH TEF AWK!?
@ithyphallus: Ahem, "Americas[s]". How the hell can you sterotype an entire continent?? That's like saying, "better give the toothpaste to the continent with the horrible teeth."
@ithyphallus: I don't see Australia mentioned anywhere
@Jake Rush: The Wii still has the most sales overall out of the three consoles in Japan.
Seriously, what's with all the Nintendo statistics and business posts today? There's at least 10 of them. Did they have some conference or something? Or do they just really like to constantly remind everyone know much cash they're making?
RockyRan
@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): If I had a penny for all the things Japan has gotten and not the west i'd be rich with pennies.
@Jake Rush: I thought the low number is because most people already have a Wii in Japan.
Those are some sexy graphs there, now we just need a cool looking PowerPoint from 1998!
SuperTongue
That's right Nintendo... the west butters your bread! I'm sure it's the same case for most game companies out of Japan so they should probably remember that ;)
@FatalChaos: Useless trivia is truly mind-expanding.
Eviltim
it's nice to see Nintendo is getting Lotus 123 and their HP Laserjet II some good use.
Lawrence Miller
@BlueWizard422: I don't see how this article will ever help you.
The Japanese are the only ones who know it's a scam... Despite the fact that they're a small country :P
Jake Rush
I just realized that I don't mind charts and statistics as long as they relate to an interesting topic. I thought I would skim the article, look at the pics and move on, but I have now increased my brainpower by that much.
The more you know...
When are we getting an Earthbound remake?
MoeB
well, give wii fit to the fatest continent and there you go
ithyphallus
@sander_dutch: Yeah, uh... you lose, there.
Europe is 'Other' now? Is there no more room on your little graph there to put Europe separately? I have a feeling that Nintendo aren't even aware that Europe exists. I bet they are genuinely surprised when they get phone calls from NoE.
"Hello? Who is this?"
"It's your European branch."
"Whaaaa?"
@sander_dutch: Central America is a political dividing, not geographical.
@vid3oman64: Such an ambiguous question.
@ithyphallus:
*Wii Fit. Capitalisation, people.
Can anyone tell me why the numbers (as always) are rounded to thousands? Customers do not, quarter after quarter, have such neat and tidy buying habits. What with electronic inventorying can't we be more precise? I'd say yes, but, clearly it isn't done for some reason. Or maybe it is but then companies release rounded numbers.
And I "me too" the comments about 1984 Mac printing and the desire to see some per-capita adjustment. I also love how they "put the name of the device" in quotes. "Units of "Wii"" has got to be something crazy and incredible to people who do metrics.
"It doesn't matter what country someone's from, or what they look like, or the color of their skin. It doesn't matter what they smell like, or that they spell words slightly differently...some would say, more correctly."
@vid3oman64: Music can be changed in a remake, so the copyright issue doesn't apply to a remake. NCL won't allow them to change the music for a release on the Virtual Console, but that's because Virtual Console games are supposed to be exactly the way they were in the beginning. (Take a look at the SNES, GBA, and VC versions of Zelda: A Link to the Past if you don't believe me...)
I agree with your conclusion, though, albeit for different reasons: EarthBound didn't sell very well the first time around, and as much as I might wish otherwise, I don't think that Ness and Lucas are very popular in SSBB.
Paviel
Umm . . . fourth quarter 2009 hasn't happened yet. Nor has third quarter. Am I missing something?
Should these be 2008?
@MoeB: When Beatles music runs out of copyright - which is never going to happen.
Kotakufan777
@LllusionX now has Valkyria Chronicles, bringing sales count...:The latter statement is abolutely true. Europeans sure could learn a thing or two from Americans about oral hygiene (I'm saying this as a European).
Kotakufan777
@TeaBean: hahaha that's true my poor European friend.i'm on the other extreme though, Being from Canada i get lumped in with "America" which is geographically sound, but i just doesn't feel right.... It's funny though that game companies only send stuff to North America as one though, so the kids in california scratch their head as to why they get a game manual in french as well as english.
(+ the UK just overtook Japan in yearly game sales crazy that it's a bigger market, especially with less people!)
Maybe they should actually act on their data and keep the momentum going outside of Japan by making games we care about instead of glorified tech demos, japanese niche titles and assorted novelty games.
This E3 is going to be their last chance in many, many people's eyes but if anyone can impress, it's Nintendo.
