Iwata: Remember, Miyamoto Is Not God

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata reminded attendees of the company’s financial results briefing that it does not employ a powerful deity, as famed Nintendo game designer is not, in reality, a god walking the Earth.

Iwata was forced to remind the crowd of Miyamoto’s non-divine status when questioned about a few of Nintendo’s more recent stumbles. That includes Wii Music “not selling very well,” declining Wii hardware sales and a series of “small mistakes” from the company, including buggy and delayed software.

Mr. Iwata responds.

“One of the reasons why Miyamoto is highly praised is because of his ability to stop, rethink about, and fix how he can convey the appeal of a software when he finds out during the latter phase of development that the software will not be good enough,” Iwata said. “This is why the games he has worked on have a high batting average to produce big hits.”

“However, he is not God and even Miyamoto himself cannot hit the mark every time nor always predict how long it takes to complete development,” he added, a statement which would fly in the face of the opinions of attendees of Nintendo’s E3 2004 press conference.

But Iwata seems to be taking these criticisms to hear.

Iwata sums up: “We are making efforts to not miss out on great opportunities. We are always searching for the next fun thing. With luck and some preparations, we hope to identify and catch these opportunities when they appear in front of us. However, no one can tell when these will comes to us, and it is inevitable that we may not always be able to launch our products at the most desirable timings.”

'Hardcore gamers' (ugh) are just pissy because Miyamoto took the time to make three games that weren't in their target market (and even then he balanced it out with Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii). Three. Like, "Oh. Em. Gee."

  • Mit

    @EnigmaNemesis: Why.

WHY is Miyamoto now a visionary for the corporate pocket?

Why is he not the same Miyamoto we've had for years?

Give me a decent reason, someone, PLEASE. PLEASE. Because every, single reason stated so far is pure BS.

Miyamoto is simply doing more than before. Why is that wrong then doing less? He's given us one of the greatest Mario games of all time in this generation, he's helped get us a new Zelda, a new Metroid, Smash Bros, is creating another Pikmin title, and is directing yet ANOTHER Mario game for Wii, two Mario games for a console, a FIRST since the SNES. He's doing the exact same thing he's been doing for years.

Only he's doing more. He's helped Nintendo create one of the most successful consoles (and handhelds) of all time, and brought millions of new people into the world of gaming. He's done all this, which alone seems like more than one person is capable of, in addition to everything he's always done: deliver great games that can please the hardcore market, and even reach out into the casual market.

If he was a god before, he's still one now, only he has even more followers in the form of an entirely new market.

People need to open their eyes and realize how ignorant they've become towards Nintendo, simply because Nintendo's new found success involves people other than themselves. If anything, you should be happy Nintendo has not become what you all claim them to be, and still even bother making hardcore games for us at all.

@ShadowOdin finally got a copy of Suikoden III. Is upset wit...: Except millions still look up to him, with millions more from the new market they tapped into. Miyamoto hasn't really changed all that much.

Sure, jumping around on a scale and playing pretend instruments is pretty stupid, but when you think about it, Mario is about an Italian plumber who gains powerups from eating various types of plant life. Donkey Kong is a gorilla that has a thing for bananas, barrels, and princesses. And Zelda is about a kid elf-boy in tights... OK, Zelda is a pretty generic fantasy world. Point is, when you take a step back and think about it, the old series that made Miyamoto great were actually kinda stupid to begin with.

And from the sounds of it, Miyamoto games like Wii Music was the kind of game that he WANTED to develop. So if anything, developing a new Zelda or Mario would mean he has even less integrity since he's caving into demands. Just because its OUR demands doesn't make it any better.

  • BrokenSoul

@Tyr4nt: It's good that some companies can keep churning out games for the dedicated enthusiast to play (I'm not even going to get into the hardcore/casual argument here) and that you can complain about a lack of games for a console but that seems pretty superficial to me.

I like the fact that Nintendo is trying new ideas, as well as many third party companies. And since I don't have the time or money to play every new game that comes along with rave reviews, I don't mind the fact that my game libraries may only include ten games per console: I probably have only had a chance to play three or four of them. Right now Metroid Prime 3 is still sitting in its cellophane wrapping waiting for me to open it up and enjoy. Same with Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn. I'm still working on Twilight Princess plus some PSP and GBA games.

The great thing about Nintendo is that they are one company out of many. If I had the time and money I would buy a XBox 360 and build up a library of about ten games or so then do the same with a PS3. But, I have a job to keep, a family to support, and a house to maintain plus a degree to pursue. And I also have other interests outside of gaming. There is no point in complaining about what Nintendo is producing based on this, in my opinion.

    Could've fooled me.

During Nintendo's interview process, everyone had to sit through an hour long presentation by Iwata, 20 minutes of which were spent on making Miyamoto seem like a deity.

They rattled off what games he has made, how much revenue he has generated, they showed off pictures of him being knighted in France, and all the people who line up to meet him wherever he goes.

This was extremely early on in the interview process, when the company was trying to sell itself to prospective employees, and what I took away from it was, 'One of the benefits of working at Nintendo is that you get to be in the presense of Miyamoto.'

@Tyr4nt: You either aren't looking hard enough, have extremely narrow tastes, or extremely high standards.

Also, I don't think he's lost his spark at all. Is it going in a different direction? Yes. But Miyamoto has pretty much always been about making games accessible and fun for everyone. Did he do that with Wii Sports? Absolutely. Super Mario Galaxy? Yep. Wii Fit? Pretty much, yes. Wii Music? Nope - it's the least accessible, most difficult "game" of the bunch, and was by far the most difficult to sell to the public at large.

Thats not to say that others wouldn't pump out much better titles if given more time, resources, etc. of course some devs would, but others would still make a crap game because they just aren't as talented.
What i'm really saying is that Miyamoto does in fact put out games that he develops quite regularly and with a reasonable development time.
One only has to look at Blizzard to see that yes, given plenty of time you will release a damn good product, but hell, they don't do it anywhere near the same speed.

You know, I always thought the praise for Miyamoto was kind of misplaced. He does make great games, but it is surely due in large part to the freedom, time and budget that Nintendo gives him/his team. If every dev studio was given the unlimited time that the Mario and Zelda teams seem to get to work on a game, then surely they'd be pumping out more AAA product as well. This quote just twists the knife:

"One of the reasons why Miyamoto is highly praised is because of his ability to stop, rethink about, and fix how he can convey the appeal of a software when he finds out during the latter phase of development that the software will not be good enough,"

He's highly praised because his publisher will give big deadline extensions, and/or actually let him get away with making big changes late in the process, whereas any other publisher would tell him to quit bitching and finish the game already? Hilarious.

@Yoshiarecool: Wii Fit saw to that the Nintendo company made billions off the casual and even the hardcore audience. Wii Music while not a instant hit still managed to sell a million copies.
He`s not a HARDCORE gaming God, but he`s now a money making idea machine.

  • Goldwings: Has no idea why his a

But Iwata seems to be taking these criticisms to HEART :P

Back before the Wii generation, you'd have to keep reminding me Miyamoto was not a GAME GOD, but now? My GG became soft and unvengeful.
Anyways it seems Iwata is just saying this to protect Miyamoto. Kind of makes me think Nintendo's E3 conference will weild nothing, but "The next big Wii thingy-ma-bober." Hmmmmm.
NOTE: I still stand by my next Zelda: Working Title prediction.

  • Komrade Kayce

    @Yoshiarecool:

What are you talking about? Do you not see the demand for Wii fit? Is it not in the top 3 every week?

    I ARE CONFUSE

  • wef

Then who the hell have I praying to all these years?

  • M.u.s.o.u.k.a

C´mon he's just want to throw us off our feet. Iwata, you know Miyamoto is God, spill the beans!

For a second I thought he was saying Miyamoto is not good; that would be a low blow.

But yeah he isn't god though lol.

  • MellowJade

Yeah that would be Kojima. He was always god-like in my eyes.

  • auberondreaming

@Yoshiarecool: The man decides to step into the casual arena, and his wii fit idea makes a billion dollars, and the market he was pandering to loves the game. First game in.

The man decides to make a return to Mario after handing it off to someone else who produces Mario Sunshine, seriously damaging the franchise (a franchise where a good game but not a stellar one has the possibility of ruining its reputation), and creates a Game of the Year for many critics and possibly the best Mario entry to date. On an "underpowered", "crappy", "casual", "waggle centric" console competing with 360 and ps3 games.

    Pretty godlike to me.

  • messiahxi

@Combine: you missed the point. Yes, non-consumerist societies have figure heads too, but they are not in service of a corporation or brand-name, but rather a government or some other such entity. Except, while it can be frightening when its a dictator, with Nintendo or Disney or its just sort of silly and pathetic.

@Valnen: I beat Link to the Past in about a day. It is just as easy. If not easier. Some of the sidequests in OoT are so much harder.
Either way, MM is the hardest of all.

  • LegendofLInk

@EnigmaNemesis: So what makes it great?

Sorry but there's more types of gamers then just hardcore. If the casual gamer thinks it's great then guess what...

    come closer...

    it is to them!

It's all a matter of opinion and I think most people forget that.

  • MPSai

I think Shiggy's getting senile in his old age and that's why he's making these fluffy grandpa games.

At E3 he's probably going to excitedly announce Wii Shuffleboard.

  • cfive3

Iwata, if someone asks you if one of your employees is a God, you say "YES"!

    cfive3

  • Jimbotron

@Leanid: How? By rehashing the same old, dusty, overused IP? That might make him equal to Miyamoto, but not better. He'll need some originality for that, which is something he is lacking.

@Gundragon:"Videogames consoles (at least in my life, begining with the SNES) were never seen as family entertainment devices in the way the Wii is now. It was always pretty niche."

You weren't paying attention at all then. FYI, it started with the 2600 and carried on down from there.

  • Gundragon

@Foxstar is in love with Kotaku's two Brians.: "Video games were marketed as electronic family entertainment long before you could turn on a TV and will be marketed as such afterwards. It's about money. And the best way to make money is to cater to families."

Videogames consoles (at least in my life, begining with the SNES) were never seen as family entertainment devices in the way the Wii is now. It was always pretty niche.

Sinse then Videogames have carved out their own market and are now regarded as a stand-alone product when it comes to analyst reviews or sales figures. You don't see games consoles ranked up alongside DVD players in monthly sales ratings. What I was getting at was that Nintendo has forged their own market within videogames that focuses more on the family entertainment rather than the traditional 20 - 30 somethings that games have catered for sinse the playstation.

That being said, I still find it interesting that people hold up a title like Wii Fit as an example of a "game" when it is clearly not.

Thank you, and ones who share my opinion, are entitled to it as well.

@EnigmaNemesis: Except your opinion, which I'm basing off of ShadowOdin's post that you seconded, is "You may sell millions, but when you do it in exchange for that spark that made millions of people look up to you, you loose prestige." Which is plain false and a result of ignorance

Miyamoto hasn't traded anything for his ability to create casual games that sell extremely well, and he's still making the same games for gamers that he has been for the past generations. There doesn't seem to be any reasoning behind your opinion.

  • Reikson

    @Mit:
Great comment. Thank you for pointing this out.
Miyamoto is doing a great job.

Please, if my opinion is that he is getting less liable in my lifetime compared to what he was, and softer for the post-lobotomy crowd, then so be it.

It is just that. My opinion.

@Knoxximus (XBL/PSN): Me either. He's just trying to keep cover.

  • Gundragon

@Foxstar is in love with Kotaku's two Brians.: I think you're missing the point. At the time the Wii came out, Videogames, by and large, were for kids and enthusiasts. Yes, there were exceptions with the PS2, singstar et al, but it was the Wii's marketing angle towards families (I'm talking *families* here. Mother, Father, Kids, Teenagers, Grandparents, the lot) that made their console something entirely different to their competetors.

  • Svend Joscelyne

@EnigmaNemesis: "You may sell millions, but when you do it in exchange for that spark that made millions of people look up to you, you loose prestige."

I don't remember you saying "to me" or "in my opinion" in that comment earlier. Because without it that makes your 'opinion' a sweeping statement. A sweeping statement which is false.

    @Aidan_:

Obviously Miyamoto is just allowing Iwata to live. And I think a brutal death from lighting and/or fireballs is the ultimate pink slip.

    Miyamoto: I'm not the Messiah!
    Casual: I say you are, Lord, and I should know;
    I've followed a few!
    Casuals: Hail Messiah!
Miyamoto: I'm not the Messiah, would you please listen, I am
not the Messiah, do you understand? Honestly!
Casual II: Only the true Messiah denies his
    divinity.
Miyamoto: What? Well, what sort of chance does that give me?
All right! I am the Messiah!
Casuals: He is! He is the Messiah!
    Miyamoto: Now, fuck off!
    Casuals: [Silence]
Man in crowd III: How shall we fuck off, oh Lord?
