J Allard? No, It’s Doctor J Allard

J Allard has, tragically, been in hiding for some time now. And still is! But his name, at least, has come out of hiding. We’re glad. And so, so glad that when it did resurface, it was to share the limelight with some illustrious company!

Yes, the former Xbox pin-up boy (and now Zune pin-up boy) has been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Boston University, where he once (presumably) majored in geek makeovers. Joining Allard on the list are some lofty alumni, including Steven Spielberg and Celtics legend Larry Bird, both of whom also are due to receive honorary doctorates.

While we’re glad to see J again, we’re actually happier at the news of Bird receiving a doctorate of any kind, because it now means we can hope for a long-awaited basketball game sequel, Dr. J vs Dr. Bird.

@SecCom: I saw a post, then another that looked just like it.

    Was it the same one?

There's a glitch, it's when Kotaku changes something.

Brought to you by the letter J.

    Not Dr J Aime Allard?

  • Luke Plunkett

@SocraticMethod: No, it's an honorary one. They're handed out to distinguished alma mater, or even just distinguished folks in general.

I totally forgot about that guy.

Why the hell is this guy (and Larry Bird and Steven Spielberg for that matter) getting an honorary doctorate? Isn't that a sort of slap in the face to every person who has actually earned a doctorate degree (even though its just an "honorary doctorate)?

Lmfao Luke, I was thinking that this whole article... The J vs. the B... Doctorate-style throwdown.

  • spannu

I thought he was still in charge of the Xbox division even though he also heads up Zune now. Or am I missing something?

Oh my God that picture almost made me fall out of my chair...alright now that I've gained composure I'll read the article

@SocraticMethod: It is pretty much just proof that your impact on the world is not tied very closely to the level of education you have.

Earning a doctorate is accomplished mostly by doing all the teaching shitwork that your professor doesn't want to do, and then at some point in there you're supposed to spend a little bit of time adding something new to your field of study...

These guys get honorary doctorates because they undoubtedly added to and enhanced their respective fields. Well at least Allard and Spielberg did, Bird probably got his just so that BC could get a little free press.

  • myspambox

@EternalStar: Yes, you're right. It detracts from all the real work done by folks in schools. If your hard work wasn't done at school, it shouldn't mean a thing! They must not ever acknowledge anything done outside their walls, never mind give out rewards for that work. It doesn't matter if you've done good work in your field for many years. Our schools should only recognize the achievements of the people who are paying them for that recognition.

    @EternalStar:
Well it's like being Knighted. It's a way of showing a bit of gratitude to people who've gone out n done stuff.
It's nothing but a title. You can't put it on a CV, unlike a full doctorate.

  • interim is a biscuit

@Luke Plunkett: Perhaps the truth resides deep within you, Luke. We must explore this dark abyss further during future sessions.

For now, I'll be giving you this cake in appreciation of your progress. Enjoy it. ...while you can.

Ahem. Yes, well a couple of wacky wavy inflatable arm guys can't possibly hurt though, can it? I mean, wouldn't you pay to see that?

  • EternalStar

Why do they give out "honorary doctorates"? I've never understood this practice. It does nothing IMO but detract from the hard work some people did to get a real doctorate, and has the added benefit of being entirely useless for the person who received it.

The only person who should have a honorary doctorate in my opinion is Stephen Colbert, just so he can force people to address him as Dr. Stephen Colbert on his show.

Does anyone else have the last name Allard and a large forehead?

@interim is a biscuit: He doesn't need wacky wavy arms.

He needs his eyes, his forehead and a vest over a hoodie.

    That's it.

  • interim is a biscuit

@Luke Plunkett: Maybe he'll bring wacky wavy inflatable arm guys with him. That's the only way to improve. God, the future is looking bright, Luke.

  • Luke Plunkett

    @ca$h: We don't hope.

    We PRAY.

  • ca$h

Man, I hope he comes out of the woodwork for the next Xbox release build-up. That guy was nothing but fun.

@PhageLab: I thought I didn't post, and in the time it took for me to realize this, I actually read the article, so I amended my post, haha.

  • Brodka

@myspambox: Yes and also, how can a Steven Spielberg even hope to compare his hard work and accomplishments with a 42 year old permanent student who just earned her PhD in Medieval Studies or Latin?
