Japanese Siren Home Space Creeps Westward

PlayStation Home is in the middle of one of their biggest content updates ever, and the North American release of the Japanese Siren: Blood Curse space plays a major part.

It’s a big week for PlayStation Home. They’re giving away Patapon 2 t-shirts on Thursday; they’re adding a living room stage set perfect for machinima; and now they’ve brought the chilling Siren 2: Blood Curse home space over from Japan. The Siren space consists of three areas. A run-down circus serves as your entry point into the space, from which you can move to the Ward of Despair mini-game lobby, with the third section being the game itself.

The Ward of Despair is a mini-game for up to five players, set in the Saiga Hospital stage from the downloadable PlayStation Network game. each given a task to complete within five minutes. If all players manage to complete their tasks without being taken out by zombies they receive creepy costumes as a reward.

You’ll want to score these rewards before May 12th, which is when the Siren: Horror Bowl Tournament takes place. Players who show up to the event in their Siren costumes will qualify for a chance to win the first four episodes of the PSN game.

Note that the Siren: Blood Curse space is only coming to North America at the moment, with a European release planned somewhere down the line.

The PlayStation Blog post announcing all of this new content also hints at upcoming Tekken 6 costumes and Killzone 2 t-shirts to stand around in.

I’m really glad to see so much happening in Home these days. I don’t think they’ve come close to tapping its full potential yet, but Sony is definitely making headway.

@laser beams: Don't you think that would be like basing your opinion of the 360 on the launch titles, some of which were better on the xbox than on the 360.

@everybest: You should check it out again. There's much more to do now, and while it might not be up your alley, you can kinda get an idea where Sony are going with it.

I honestly think it's kinda cool. I don't use it. But I do like where they're heading with it. As an optional aside, I always head in to check out some of the new bits and bobs they implement.

Psst: Blood Curse/New Translation isn't "SIREN 2". It's a SIREN remake. SIREN 2 was its own game (best in the franchase, IMO; great story, great characters, not mercilessly difficult, and a few awesome twists). It only came out in the EU, unfortunately, as "Forbidden Siren 2".

Just a SIREN goober fanboy here, move along.

Thanks for the replies, I might have to check it out sometime. I did unlock some costumes in SF4 but never thought twice about it.

@BarbeQueQ: I actually am surprised. The first and only time I tried it, the loading times were not too pleasant and there didn't seem to be much to do, but I've noticed a lot of content being added, so I will need to revisit Home for myself.

@gordiehowe5: I'm not sure where the aggression is coming from. I did admit to being oblivious to Home and I'm not avoiding it because I hate it, but because there was no draw for me to load Home a second time. If only I was that popular. We would all be playing tetris and tetris only.

  • gordiehowe5

@everybest: Yes, because if you don't like it, it can't be popular.

  • BarbeQueQ

@everybest: Home's quite popular and it's not surprising at all, is it?

Just look how popular The Sims franchise is. Or Second Life.

Sure, those games are more advanced than Home but they're all kinda simulating reality and Home's getting better and better(as you can see). Home won't die anytime soon. As long as there are casual gamers there are games(services?) like home. My brother(28) loves home and so do his friends. They're all around the same age and casual players.
For them, Home's something fresh because they haven't seen anything like that before.

@Godseye: Part of that unlimited potential is following through with announced features.
The actual world is building up quite decently, but one's apartment space is still rather pointless to explore.
Perhaps the next step is to implement methods of entertaining guests in one's virtual home. Virtual alcohol, virtual beer pong, a virtual deck of cards, and maybe even virtual marijuana (which if you're found buying, you'll be fined).
What about virtual game consoles that play virtual games? You could perhaps dish out a bit of cash a virtual set of rock band peripherals for you and three virtual buddies to virtually jam out on.
More emotes would help too, something along the lines of virtual physical contact. Hugging, arms around shoulders, high-fives, waltzes and tangos, friendly arm punches, not-so-friendly arm punches, kissing even, and perhaps sex.
... All the stuff that makes real life so great.

Hope they eventually bring over the Disgaea homespace also.

@PatrickF**kingStar: O.O dude that was creepy as fuck. damn i need to go pick this game up, even if i wont sleep at night.

    @PatrickF**kingStar:

dude...I don't blame you. that stuff is creepy as hell o_o

  • notquitedeadyet

@everybest: Yes, it is. Just log on sometime and see the herds of people running around talking and such.

I, myself, don't really use it that much, but I use it when a bunch of my friends are on and we just want to hang out and chat.

It's not like it's completely useless.

Sony is working in the long perspective, as always. It's very typical of people to disrespect a product that doesn't make an instant hit, and fanboynsm doesn't help at all. Home has unlimited potential, and we are only seeing the very first tentative steps.

  • brainFUBAR

I plan on one day using Home to gather with my friends and organize multiplayer gaming sessions.

First, I need to get some friends...

  • Nubius

you can't sight-jack enemies that don't have eyes right?

  • Narishma

@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: It is popular, just not amongst hardcore players who visit kotaku.

    Narishma

  • CosmicElement

@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: If you ask me, this is the correct way to promote and expand on PS Home.
Not only does the minigame with four other players sound interesting; it'd be cool to see it all work out, winning downloadable levels and all.

    CosmicElement

  • Archaotic

@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.:
As far as we can tell, it IS making them money though, and more publishers seem to be signing on to get involved every day.

    Bleh.

  • PatrickF**kingStar

I was just talking about being creeped out by the Original on the PS2. The scene where Mina Onda first appeared really stands out.

With special mention to the Mission referenced in this video:

This game gave me nightmares. (No joke, either. Actual, wake-up-in-a-cold-sweat nightmares.)

  • Black-Dog-Howls

@everybest: Short answer, yes. It has enough of a user base to not only make money, but participate in whatever Home is leading towards in this grand(micro-grand?) experiment into money sucking devices.

    Black-Dog-Howls

  • Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Sc

@everybest: Its not popular by a long shot but its also far from dead.

Just because they're pumping it full of content all the time doesn't mean its even doing well. It just means they haven't given up on it and really why should they.

A fun experience exists within Home, I just feel it hasn't been unearthed quite yet.

  • Krigo

I think I'll just go make a female character and see how many Male characters I can get a chain of.

    Krigo

  • laser beams

i still don't think i'm willing to log in again... i think the first day Home went live was the first and last time i ever bothered.

  • everybest

Is Home really all that popular? I'm kind of oblivious to it all seeing how I got on Home once, got bored and haven't been on since.

  • ShadowOdin finally got a copy of

@StevenRafael: Someone doesn't have the 4-in-1 Namco arcade in his appartment~

  • mispeld

Am I the only one who has to read some of these headlines several times before they make any sense?

  • Chances

Goddamn, that's almost worth downloading and going into Home again. Almost. I'd love to have a Nurse Yukie costume or whatever, but once I had it I'd never use it.

  • Bii Nii Wii Nii Politely Replace

Adding more content almost seems to backfire against Home, because with each newly skinned room + cheesey mini game comes one more room that just adds to the frustration and annoyances of moving within...er moving between Home spaces.

  • jedbeetle

Once upon a time, I heard of an Uncharted arcade game that was supposed to release in Home. what happened to that?

    jedbeetle

  • Kosamus

I got laid in Home, what does that make me?

  • Ehardergardens

@Diamond_Sutra: really wanted to try this one.. new translation just seemed to silly at times.. there was some really good stuff in there but the ending was wiggity whack... the first one I have tried many times to play as it just seems so interesting and scary but ends up just being frustrating. Playing 80 levels at about a level an hour minimum, with the strat guide mind you, is ridiculously irritating.. new translation was almost too easy though.
