Jumpgate Special Edition Is Full Of Stars

The special edition box set for NetDevil’s Jumpgate: Evolution certainly doesn’t suffer from a lack of space and space by-products.

Discovered by a curious reader via a product listing at UK retailer Game’s website, the Special Edition of Jumpgate: Evolution is packed with exactly the sort of things you’d expect to find in the special edition of a massively multiplayer online game. Galactic map? Check. Art book? Check. Official soundtrack? Check. It’s one of the most by-the-book MMO special editions we’ve seen, right down to the 5 buddy postcards and the 2 in-game items, the experience enhancing Stella Ensign and Stella Citation.

No word yet on whether or not this £39.99 special edition will be coming to the states. I’m sure NetDevil will let us know if and when they’re good and ready.

    Basically, it's a space-based combat MMO. I played it last year and it's a lot of fun. Not as deep as games like Freelancer and certainly not as complex as Eve. It's targeted more towards the casual player, someone who doesn't want to invest all of their free time in an MMO.

  • Raziel66

    @Anshrew: Hell yes. Finally an MMO where real skill matters.

    I got so tired of people crunching numbers and math equations to make the strongest character.

    Raziel66

  • Krashblind

    When they start Beta I will get excited about this.

    Krashblind

  • Akira119

    @Fallible.: Twitch based space-combat MMO. If I have to say more, you probably don't/wont care about the game.

  • Raziel66

    @nerdslashpimp: Something as hefty and thorough as the Age of Conan book would be great. Mass Effect... I can't remember it's book. Was it large? Or one of the smaller pocket sized art books?

    Raziel66

  • Anshrew

    @Werrick:

    But it's twitch control combat.

    It's basically a f-16 dogfighting arcade game in space, but as an MMO.

    GAME, not Game.

    :D

  • Massiah

    @nerdslashpimp: I would play a Freelancer MMO for sure. I'd like to try to be in the beta. I have a joystick that gets no use because there are no space games left.

  • DozertheDozarian

    @ThursdayNext: Um... wow...

  • nerdslashpimp

    @Raziel66: It better be one hell of an artbook. It would be perfect if it was similar in content to "The Art of Mass Effect."

  • Raziel66

    I was hooked at the first announcement. I never played Freelancer, but the promise of a twitch-combat MMO is enough for me. I'll be dusting of my long-neglected joystick (an actual joystick, not my penis) and using that.

    But this Special Edition isn't a good one in my eyes. As stated in the article, it's too by the book. It's the special standout items that make the Special Editions worth it.

  • Raziel66

    @Waaaaaa....?: I didn't get it at first and was about to call you both idiots... but then I looked at the box again.

    :(

    Fucking Goatse.

  • nerdslashpimp

    @radink:

    It plays like Freelancer.

  • kidko

    @Methusalah: Yeah, if upandb is like me then they actually mean "SWG: Jump to Lightspeed"

  • Fallible.

    @iam118: How blunt. I may have to cry now.

    Excuse me.

  • radink

    As long as this game isn't boring live eve, it should be cool.

    radink

  • iam118

    @Fallible.: nope. you fail.

    iam118

  • Methusalah

    @KillerBee: Well, there is space combat in SWG now...

  • Fallible.

    I've never heard of it.

    Is it safe to assume that Jumpgate is kind of like a non-canon Stargate fan-fiction?

  • Waaaaaa....?

    @KotakuFreund: Exactly what I thought of. Oh how the internet has taken its toll on my innocent little mind.

  • MountainCool

    Man its nice to see a game box for the PC for a change.

    MountainCool

  • ThursdayNext

    @Elchris: I bet he's Crowing about Gobling up this special offer...

    ThursdayNext

  • KotakuFreund

    Goatse?

    KotakuFreund

  • KillerBee

    @upandb: Except this is nothing at all like SWG.

    It is more E.V.E. and Earth and Beyond.

  • Elchris

    Looks like CrowGoblin got the JUMP on everyone else and was first out of the GATE.

    Also, Codies are known to do a 'Collectors Edition' too, which sits a tier above this. So I think we might see another SKU at some point.

  • upandb

    hopefully this game will replace SWG for me

    upandb

  • Werrick

    Net Devil?
    Space MMO?

    Yah, still wary about this... I'd probably like to try it, for free... but I'm not paying for it, no matter how pretty it is. I have this irrational fear that it'll end up being JumpEve: Full Autovolution.

    Werrick

  • Raziel66

    @Krashblind: Yeah, especially with the "release date" so close. This is either going to be a really short beta test like Free Realms, or the date is going to be pushed wayyy back.

    Raziel66

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey

    "ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDINGS THERE."

    Yeah - you can't expect me not to say that.

  • KillerBee

    @Methusalah: I didn't know that. My mistake. It has been years since I played SWG. Long before Jedi came along.

  • Freyar

    @Werrick: I think the biggest concern is the terrible mess NetDevil made of Double Agent's multiplayer, and a few others as well. Worked okay for Xbox Live, but not for a PC platform.

  • Werrick

    @Anshrew:

    Which is what Full Auto was, but with cars, so it wasn't in three dimensions and the physics were terrestrial.

    It's a good idea, but so was Full Auto... that didn't make it suck less.

    I haven't played this game and I'm not actually ragging on it, I'm just suspicious. I've been burnt way too many times by getting excited for MMOs coming out that they no longer even register a lot of the time when they're mentioned in articles or discussed in general.

    Werrick

  • Fallible.

    @ryosen:

    Thanks for the link, I may actually have to give this a try. MMO's have never been my forte, short of routinely logging into City of Heroes to play dress-up.

    Thanks for the info.

  • John_Norad

    People just have to flame stuff dont they. its probably going to be a good game for those who like space combat and like mmo's with the ability to level and improve character, PVP, etc. If you think the game will suck hey, dont buy it. Simple as that.

  • Hypernetic

    You know, if this was true, and the collector's edition winds up being what the retailer says it will be, why is that bad?

    I have a ton of collector's edition games, and I've come to realize that I'd much rather have something that I'd actually use than a cheap action figure or a lunch box. Sure, some of those little doodads are cool but ultimately the figures, special boxes, and everything else sit on a shelf in my closet collecting dust.

    A CD of the soundtrack and an art book though? These are things I would actually use. I have dozens of art books from games, and I display them for guests when they come over. I know art books have become almost a standard in CE games these days, but some of them are really well done, so well done that I'm proud to show them to people.

    I'd also rather have a quick reference map that might actually help me play the game, than a cheap plastic toy. Then there are in game items, which I honestly don't understand how or why this retailer knows about, which make perfect sense. Loot, particularly of the limited variety, is a large part of what makes MMOs fun.

    So, since you are apparently a marketing genius and have all the answers, why don't you tell me what would make the Jumpgate CE better? Perhaps they should include an actual, functioning, space craft with each copy?

    In the end, I don't really believe this article. Preorders are an insane source of revenue for retailers, you are basically giving them an interest free loan, which they can then invest and make interest on themselves, while all you get is a slip of paper to be used some months or years later. So, it's quite beneficial for game retailers to release info on a limited edition item, whether it's real or not, as far ahead of release as possible. I refuse to preorder anything at gamestop or any other store that charges money to preorder.

  • Hypernetic

    @Massiah:

    If you are a fan of Freelancer, X-Wing, Wing Commander, or any or all of the other classic space sims then you will love Jumpgate Evo.

    I can't say too much, I'm bound by an NDA, but the game is really cool. It's not currently in beta yet, but you can sign up for a chance to test it when the beta starts at us.jumpgateevolution.com.

    If you do some reading and stuff about the game you will quickly see that it truly is like a Freelancer MMO.

    Hypernetic

  • Hypernetic

    @Fallible.:

    I'm not sure what Ryosen is talking about, Jumpgate Evolution hasn't even reached beta testing yet, it just hit alpha. So how did he play it last year?

    If he is referring to the original Jumpgate, which Evolution is the sequel too, then that game is quite old. Jumpgate was the first MMO I played, and it was complex and deep. It had everything from commerce to combat, you could be everything from a miner to a mercenary. It was a lot like Eve actually, but it was in first person and controlled like a flight sim.

    A good friend of mine is on the development team for this game, I can't (and won't) tell you any inside info but if you are interested in the game I can tell you what I know that is already public information.

    Hypernetic

  • Hypernetic

    Haven't you guys learned by now not to take some random retailers information at face value? Anyone who quotes a game retailer for release dates or other game info on a message board get's laughed off the boards.

    Seriously, this game is in the first phase of ALPHA testing, it's nowhere near done. I seriously doubt they already ironed out all the details for the collector's edition and then leaked them to some random retailer in Europe.

    Hypernetic

  • Hypernetic

    @John_Norad:

    This is actually a sequel to an awesome MMO that was simply before it's time. The original Jumpgate rocked, and while I can't tell you why, the new one rocks too. Just take my word on that.

    P.S. Auto Assault was actually a good game, it had some issues, like every other MMO did at launch, they didn't get fixed because nobody played the game though.

    Hypernetic

  • Hedgeson, Now with Brain

    @radink: I'd say EVE is boring like monopoly is boring. I like the scope of their game. But since I loved Freelancer, I'd probably like Jumpgate more than EVE. Jumpgate: Evolution will probably leech a number of players away from EVE.

  • Hedgeson, Now with Brain

    @Werrick: Wrong game, you probably mean Auto Assault. Auto Assault wasn't twitch combat. Weapons were more or less auto-attacking. It was only an MMO on wheels.

    But I really liked it. I was sad when they canned it. At the time I couldn't afford paying for a MMO, so they closed it before I could play more than a month.

  • Alternate, I cho-cho-chose the i

    All this reminds me of is the hundreds of Tabula Rasa special editions being dumped in GameSpot dumpster bins after the game failed.

  • ryosen

    @Hypernetic: They've had a playable demo available to the Press for some time. Further, the game was on exhibition at PAX last August, as well as ComicCon in February. I was able to play it at both. So, you're right, it's not a "public" demo.
