Majesco Flips At E3

Majesco is bending the very fabric of space to bring us Flip’s Twisted World, an upside-down platformer for the Nintendo Wii, which they’ll be showing off next week at E3 2009.

While games that allow players to turn the world on end are far from a dime a dozen, level-twisting is a gimmick that’s been on the rise over the past few years, and now Majesco is taking a stab at it with Flip’s Twisted World. Magician’s apprentice Flip messes with the wrong magical artifact, getting sucked into an oddly cubed world. In order to escape, he’ll have to turn the world, 90 degrees at a time, in order to find the find his way home and possibly stop the destruction of the universe.

At the very least, it’s a new platforming IP with a relatively innovative gameplay mechanic, colorful characters, and the musical stylings of famed video game composer Tommy Tallarico. For more than that, check back with us during E3.

    looks neat.. hope it doesnt make my stomach hurt though. also, the character design is garb.

  • shouryuuken

    @ThursdayNext: if youre a perfectionist.. you must get pissed at 99.9% of the games released then.. kuz alot of that stuff is far from perfect.

  • AnimZero

    Ugh, eff them. Last year I did a game extremely similar to this (except it was in 2D, and it used crazy vector graphics) for my final project in my Introduction to Game Design class (I got a 100. :D). They stole my idea! XD

    I won't be buying any Majesco games.

    @Gojira007: I know. With a cube, and those caves and floating islands, you instantly have 36 distinct stages simultaneously overlapping each other. Which is brilliant.

    1Grand_Marquis

  • 1Grand_Marquis

    @Rowd: Maybe you're given the option at the end to either save the universe, or let someone else deal with it.

    @Jimbotron:
    Here, here! I agree. Hopefully the game will be very fun. If the physics of it are as smooth as SMG's then it should be very fun as long as the level designs aren't too repetitive.

    @Heliophage: I never get dizzy with this games, I dont get dizzy with any game, but I do feel like turning my head around to actually see well, I actually was turning it when I saw the screenshot.

  • Dochii

    I like this N64esque look. Reminds me of the great platforming days of Mario 64, Banjo, Goemon, Rayman, and even those more obscure ones like Glover, Chameleon Twist and Tonic Trouble.

  • HowardC

    Looks terrible, borrows all gameplay mechanics from mario galaxy (which if we are honest without ourselves, we wouldn't have put up with the dizzying world flips if it weren't for mario) so this is an epic fail and it hasn't even been released yet!

    *core third party game is announced for Wii*

    "blah! this sucks! this looks bland! this looks boring! this isn't HD! why isn't this 1vs100!? where's the Guitar Hero Nickelback DLC!?"

    ...gamers used to not suck.

  • 0xC001D00D

    @[Dextr]: looks very crappy, expecially the character.. it's like it was sketched on paper frame by frame and then scannerized...

  • phisheep

    @Sirusjr:

    You never know, it could be a deliberate design decision.

    Certainly, for me, if a game has this much vertigo in it I am only too glad that it isn't more realistic.

  • 0xC001D00D

    @Jimbotron: it doesn't look like a n64 at all, the character has at least 10 times the polygons of mario in mario64 and it has hires textures and rim lighting. It's not Mario galaxy, but that one was a first party title with a *BIG* budget.
    This is what the wii can do. Simply as that.

  • 0xC001D00D

    @Sirusjr: it looks decent for the ridiculous hardware of the Wii to me... And i worked both on wii and on ps2 in the past. Maybe the ary stile is not so inspired, but hell no, it's not a DS game at all

  • Mit

    The return of the classic photo viewer :D

  • Comatose Turtle

    Someone help me out with this one. There was an old game on the SNES (I believe) that let you reverse your own gravity at will. It was set in space. I played it for an afternoon at someone else's house but never heard the name of it! I enjoyed it immensely and would emulate it in a heartbeat if I could figure out the name.

    Anyone know it?

  • Stompy1

    It's like Super Mario Galaxy, only much less advanced! Why bother with spheres, torii and other freeform shapes when you can have cubes! Also, hideous graphics! The character looks fine, but the environments look PS2 standard. Judging it on a few screenshots, sure.

    Stompy1

  • zero111311

    @ThursdayNext:

    I agree with this, I sold my Wii and the only thing I miss about my Wii is the fact that I could play Star Fox 64 and Paper Mario on it.. Other than that, I haven't looked back.

  • zero111311

    @Heliophage:

    It kinda reminds me of the Distortion World from Pokemon Platinum

  • ThursdayNext

    @Jimbotron: No need for coarse language! Though a language course wouldn't go amiss.

  • ThursdayNext

    @Jimbotron: Either way, to me it doesn't matter two shits from Friday whether the graphics are "bland" or not. As long as the gameplay is done well, and fun, that's all that matters to me. Maybe one day you'll learn that. Some of the other screens look less "bland".

    On the other hand, as much as I value great gameplay I also want games to look great. Which is why I no longer own a Wii. The number of games that I found fun to play was far outweighed by the quantity of games that I found dull and repetetetetetetive and none of them have the graphical polish of even a lesser PS3 or Xbox title.

    Call me a graphics whore if you will, but I prefer to think of myself as a perfectionist.

  • Jimbotron

    @aperturius: Save your "meh" until you try it. If it plays like crap or isn't very fun, then "meh" sounds about right. Sure, it's nothing to write home about in the visual category, but it could turn out to be fun.

    am i the only one that thinks the graphics look decent? I mean, yeah, its no mario galaxy, but they've pretty much imitated the lighting engine from that game. The objects are a little low poly, but the textures aren't too bad.
    [kotaku.com]

    defferoo

  • Jimbotron

    @talks2wall: It looks adequte. Not every game needs a billion polygons. and considering that Majesco rarely sells their games at full price, you have to expect the graphics to be less than stellar. as long as the game is fun, I don't care if it looks like an N64 game.

    Jimbotron

  • aperturius

    It has a ghetto-Mario Galaxy look to it. It also looks like early screenshots for the nixed Sonic X-treme game for the Saturn. Meh.

    @talks2wall: oh snap

  • Xelioth

    @Sirusjr: you can tell just by looking that this screenshot is particularly bland...

  • Gojira007

    Interesting...how much do we know about the gameplay mechanics so far? Because if actual control of the stage's angle is part of the idea, I'm TOTALLY sold.

  • chuffhoncho

    As long as it plays well, I'm in. Good platformers are too rare this gen.

    OH MY HEAD HURTS ALREADY!!!!

  • [Dextr]

    and yet it moves

  • Zac Shipley

    I'm less concerned with graphics and more concerned with gameplay. if the control is tight and the puzzles are fun, it can look like a N64 game for all I care.

    @mitch_93: Wait sorry did not see the other screens. Cheap Mario Galaxy is what I now call it.

    mitch_93

  • mitch_93

    Cheap game makers. If it was on the DS I would go whoa pretty sweet. But for the Wii? Instead of sucking on walles for money go suck something else Majesco.

  • Fallible.

    Mario Galaxy 2, for... DS?

    I really hope this is an early, unpolished, build.

  • Insane

    Aren't majesco the same boys and girls who nearly closed down their whole company WAY BEFORE the economic crisis

    and blamed it all over the psychonauts and the Advent rising ?!

    i suppose all the other near to collapse studios and publishers could save their arses by making some "cooking mama" kinda things on the wii ...

  • talks2wall

    This N64 game looks great. I thought the system was dead though. :/

  • Sirusjr

    Are we sure this is a Wii game? Looks more like a DS game. Leave it to Majesco to push our hardware to the limits!

  • WPack911

    Well it certainly is twisted, hopefully that ends up being a good thing and not a bad one.

    That screenshot by itself made me dizzy. D:

    Maybe I should fire up Mario Galaxy to train myself to suppress my nausea again.

    @shouryuuken: Yeah, I'm constantly disappointed. The day I'm 100% satisfied will be a sad day for me because that day I know I will never see anything better.

    I'm just less dissatisfied with PS3 and Xbox than I was with the Wii.
