Make Your Own Modded Console Handhelds

Console modder Ben Heckendorn has made quite a name for himself chopping machines apart and making them smaller, sleeker, more portable. Now you can do as he does.

To help him sell his book “Hacking Videogame Consoles”, Heckendorn has posted on his website a series of design documents and shopping lists for some of his more popular creations, which should be enough to get the more industrious amongst you cutting, soldering and gaming-on-the-go in no time.

You can find the drawings and component lists for eight portable consoles, including the SNES, Atari 2600 and PS1, at the link below.

    @qhue:
He currently makes his cash off commission's.
Like the PS3 n 360 latpop's can set you back $5000 a piece, and he has lot's more smaller stuff which add up to a decent salary.
He also has a few products out, like the book, as well as a one-handed 360 controller, interchangeable controller and a few other smaller stuff.

might have to pick that up - i've got an old vaio i'd love to make into a portable ps2.

Ben Heck only lives a few miles away from me, friend of mine just saw him saturday at (appropriately) Pre-Played, a used game and movie store that stocks a lot of old consoles.

I'll bet the guys who work there could tell you exactly what he's doing next...

darn you, darn you to heck!

  • the7k

@qhue: I'm pretty sure he gets quite a lot of money from people who commission him to make console mods. That money kinda frees him up to work at a "real" job less, which gives him more time to play Frankenstein.

  • Polzin

@qhue: he's from wisconsin. and trust me. if you don't have a hobby here... you might as well go play with dad's pistol as it's so boring as you go on in years you'll feel like your already dead. sorry. other than the cheese i hate wisconsin.

  • Sith_Mafia

he should rename his book to "Hecking Video Game Consoles"

  • Grumpz®: Internet Guardian Ange

He never includes D Battery power in his designs. His missing out on their awesome power!

  • antspai01

@qhue: one would assume its his hobby, it's either that or he's a lonely, lonely man

  • PatrickF**kingStar

@qhue: I suppose he didn't give up on his life and resign to working 9-to-5 at some office gig and coming home to an ungrateful wife and nagging kids.

    Grrrrr...

    Clams shouldn't shit so much.

  • qhue

How does this man have the time to do such amazing things?

    qhue

  • PatrickF**kingStar

    I wish I had Shaq-hands, then I could carry around a handheld PS3.

  • deathzerozx

@antspai01: HAHA! He got hit in the head with 2 coconuts!!!! =)

  • Chewbenator

@Hedgeson, Now with Brain: I have a PS2, Xbox, and N64 perched precariously above my head as I am also out of room... One day it's all going to come crashing down on my mouse hand and I will never be the same again. But, I just can't let them out on the street.

  • Hedgeson, Now with Brain

Too bad I just sold all my old consoles to make room... Moving from a house to a condominium sucks...

  • saulpimpson

    @qhue: it's all he does.

  • Hedgeson, Now with Brain

@domhnall: One-handed controller for people with only one hand. It was made for people with disabilities.

    Come on!

  • datsunzep

I've got an old genesis I could mod...oh wait I already have a nomad.

His portable Dreamcast mods were badass, I must say.

  • Cranker

    The man is an artist.

  • bmart008

    @PatrickF**kingStar: haha nice,

    (puts up flame shield)

Or oven mittens for a handheld 360!

  • domhnall

@deanbmmv: One handed controller for IdolMaster.

  • anexanhume

@PatrickF**kingStar: And a nice car battery backpack to go with it.

  • JustJake

@Polzin: I hear you Wisconsin sucks. Either become an alcoholic or get a hobby like this guy.

I took the alcoholic approach and it has been working well! lol

    JustJake

  • Zookey

@PatrickF**kingStar: LMAO or yo could wait like 3 or 4 years for the PSP2---if Sony follows their current trajectory on it (where the first PSP was just shy of the PS2's horsepower) then the PSP2 will essentially be a portable PS3, preferably without the car batter back pack.

@Bmart008 ---I am a big PS3 fanboy (not the insecure type though) but I think we all have to admit, the PS3 and 360 output roughly the same heat, just the PS3 is better built to get rid of and handle the heat--so yeah a handheld of either would either have to be a small engineering marvel or they'd cook your hands!

  • sentroshi

I'd customize my car with batteries, shelves, and a bunch of console games, and have all eight portable consoles in my car. That'd be a dream :)
