@Roufuss: Likewise, Raiden Fighting Aces supports tate mode, so turn your screen vertical and watch the borders disappear. The game even supports opacity options for those borders and stretching options which I believe can cover the full horizontal width of the screen. I haven't tested it yet to its fullest, but the option is there if you'd rather a fatter display over empty bezel.

Dammit! No where is taking pre-orders yet? It's not up on Amazon yet...

Awesome. I've always loved the Raiden games. Very fun and nice and challenging..powerups were always very very cool. I saw the compilation title at work..just not enough scratch to buy it right now..though I really want it. HOpe this is also a sign of new Raiden games to come...or maybe more similarly playing games on the rise. Perhaps an Ikaruga sequel to hit XBLA? If only...

@Kobun: Couldn't agree more. I first heard about RFA and was psyched until I learned that it wouldn't be the games I'd loved losing dollars to at various arcades throughout the 1990s.

Of course, this looks like the summer of shoot 'em for me, since I got the Gradius Collection, all the Metal Slug games and Castle Shikigami III all in one month. Might have to scrape together the funds for RFA if it's actually $20 in local stores. It goes without saying that the actual subject of the post will be bought.

Raiden is not that good anyway, there are much better top down shooters. I'd love to see Donpachi or another cave shooter.

@gaijira: "Shooter" can refer to First and Third-Person Shooters. "Shoot 'em Up" can refer to Run 'n Gun games, like Contra and Metal Slug.

If you say shmup, it can only mean that.

Especially given its price of ¥7000 (~$70 USD) in Japan. I picked the collection up on release day. The game even allows you to play in TATE mode, at either 90° and 270°.

Now I just need to find an arcade stick that isn't being sold for twice retail...farking scalpers.

@Rambozo: Yes, I know, but the older Raiden games are still quite popular and are developed by the same company. Given the lack of a "perfect" port and the excellent presentation of RFA, I can't help but want the original three done in the same manner.

Woohoo this makes my day great. I have been having a blast with Raiden Fighter Aces all week long and I really have been hoping that Raiden IV would get released in the states.

I would never have thought that the 360 would be the Shump king this generation.

I would really wish for a R-Type College with a collage of the R-Type Games.

@Kobun: Raiden and Raiden Fighters are two different series. Originally RF was going to be called Gun Dogs, but they added the Raiden name and jet in for brand recognition.

I'm not that much into these games, but Raiden Fighters Aces was a good rental. Fun for a couple of days with some easy achievement points.

I'd love to know why Raiden Fighting Aces could not included the first three Raiden games. It's as though Seibu Kaihatsu is channeling George Lucas just to toy with my feelings and desires for a perfect console original trilogy.

@Kamen Rider Gatack: "Shmup" is short for shoot em up...referencing to overhead (or side view) shooting games. They can be categorized horizontal or vertical (Raiden, Darius, Gradius), or arena style (Geometry wars), bullet hell (Touhou), etc...

I find that game highly unpleasant maybe because of its unorthodox "laser beam" things. I prefer 1942 or something like it.

I invested in the JPN 360 version of this - honestly it's awesome. Original arcade build from Taito Type X is included, and a special bolstered 360 version that is a little easier at first but has two extra levels and far more enemies. And the double play mode is incredible. Time for you all to buy two matching arcade sticks.

I finally got the solo play one-credit clear a fortnight ago, and it was the first time the disk came out of my Xbox for months I think...

Love Raiden! Those graphics look absolutely amazing. I hope the framerate doesn't suffer from the massive bullet hell that will be induced.

Note to UFO: Please bring this over to the PS3 or PSN! There are plenty of fans that are clamoring for a good shmup!

@Kracus: i was watching the raiden iv video. you can play the game now in horizontal mode! i know purists might go crazy and think raiden is supposed to be vertical, but that's cool! they really went crazy on making this game more than a standard shoot 'em up.
