New Tony Hawk Detailed At E3 2009
Will the king of skateboarding video games make a comeback in 2009? Activision plans on delivering new details on the next Tony Hawk game during E3 2009.
We’ve not heard much from the Tony Hawk front since traditional developer Neversoft shifted focus to work on the Guitar Hero franchise for Activision. So far all we know is that Activision has promised that the next game in the series will be a re-engineering of the franchise, and that Tony Hawk himself has claimed the game will be the closest thing you’ll ever see to real skateboarding.
During Activision’s earnings call today, president and CEO of publishing Mike Griffith told us to expect more details on the next game in the franchise at next month’s E3. Hopefully we’ll see the game in action, or at least confirm whether or not rumours of Robomodo’s involvement prove true.

@bakagaijin: That's why there's such a thing called RENTING. You should seriously consider getting an account with GameFly. You'll never buy a game you didn't like after the first couple hours. BUT if you do consider to buy it, you'll be pleased to know that after 3 months and on, you'll be getting BRAND NEW games for $47 buck or lower!!! Can't go wrong there, chief...
riceKRISPYninja
@mellowspaz:
I'd totally buy that.
woons
Hawk is older but he's also a guy that takes an active role in making the games. At least he cares. I hope that this is a re-birth of the franchise cuz there were some great memories. And it'll help keep the Skate dev team sharp knowing they have some competition.

@somarix: um, ok...thank you for that Mr. Apples/Oranges
chang187
@SketchyIndividual: and another thing, SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A FUCKING SPORT.
chang187
@SketchyIndividual: you have no idea what you are talking about, talk to any real skateboarder, STYLE>SUBSTANCE that includes the threads your wearing too. when i say style i mean the fluidity that the trick was performed, not wether the skateboarder has a cigg in his mouth and rocking the latest fashion. a clean kickflip will alway look better than a wonkey looking 360 flip. you took me completely out of context man. you're out of line.
chang187
@chang187: "like a robot". Isn't it the opposite? Doing well-known tricks with perfection and little movement is a robot's task. (ooh look at how perfectly that car gets assembled by robots in the factory) Doing creative things out of this world with "shabby" movements is a human's task.
In music, a perfect following of the sheet results in a soulless performance.
@Skyline7284: I disagree, THPS3 was also very much in the same vein, albeit with updated physics.
THPS2 still holds a special place in my memory though, it was the first game I completely completed (every character, all of the gaps, everything).
@SketchyIndividual:
Dude, hucking 1080s is lame, stylin' out a 360 tweak is where it's at.
@undefined:
I was already sick of the Tony Hawk series when I finally played Skate 2. Now there's no reason to go back.
EA makes Rock Band, a full band game... Activision says its dumb and a copy cat then re-engineers Guitar Hero to be like Rock Band
EA makes Skate, a skateboard simulator... Activision says its dumb and a copy cat then re-engineers Tony Hawk to be like Skate
Stay tune for the Medal of Honor reboot and Activision's responce

@Cloral: Agreed. THPS1 and 2 were great, at 3 the downfall started. I hated when they upped the tempo and added all that useless junk. Probably just to warrant a sequel. New levels and upgraded graphics would've done the same thing, but they actually forgot the latter. Even the HD versions look quite lame.
The series was good on PS1, since then it's been a gradual downfall. They say they're doing something new, which is kinda interesting. New as in copying Skate, or new as in new?
Damn, I was hoping they would go back to THPS3-like 2 minutes, skate your fucking brains out.
rapkadrummer
There was never anything wrong with the classic tony hawk series' arcade style gameplay. What killed that franchise was bringing in "Jackass" toilet humor and trying to implement realism into a series that had no need for it.
@Hoytzilla: Hehe it's because this is the internet, this is what we do :) :P
iizcallum
Give us some god damn surf instead, why mash a genre already over ruled..
valero
@SketchyIndividual: Your definition of style in this case and his definition are completely different. Your talking about the look. He's still talking about perfecting tricks and coming up with new and very cool lines to do. Sure Mullen is the grandfather of skateboarding and yah he has come up with stuff that I can't even begin to try and name.
If anybody Marc Johnson could actually skateboard in his sleep and still land everything perfectly. When the guy grinds and especially manuals, he doesn't move at all.
Watch Fully Flared.
Nassin
so ive come to notice that 90% of katokites only post complaints. if you dont like it dont play it
Hoytzilla
@SketchyIndividual:
amen. I believe it was Mullen who inspired me to skate. Sure I blowed and eventually gave up, but it's the inspiration that counts.
PunkyChipsAhoy
@chang187: See, people like you are why the sport has degenerated this far. More concerned with style then substance; you're those people that's spend more time trying to keep your balance and walking around with your board "because it looks cool" then perfecting new tricks.
As to Mullen's age: Who gives a shit? See, one more bit of evidence to let us know the kind of person you are. More concerned with being cool then the sport itself.
@chang187: no to mention, Mullen is almost 2 years older than Hawk.
chang187
@SketchyIndividual: why is everyone on Mullen's dick, he's an amazing technical skater but has ZERO style, yes his tricks are out of this world but it looks like a robot is performing them, a very, very advanced robot. gimme Marc Johnson's Pro Skater.
chang187
@Obey__: Wait wut?
if its really as close as you can bet, i bet when you drop the $60, Tony Hawk shows up at your house and beats you with his skateboard until you have some broken bones and some nasty cuts.
upandb
@Frequen-Z: I'm calling it's a Wii game using the balance board.
I just hope it isn't like skate. The controls in that game annoyed me. I also don't want a skateboard-like peripheral, nor do I want the balance board.
You know what? I'd like a Tony Hawk game that plays like the old Tony Hawk games before they added all the extra crap that gets in the way.
Cloral
@False: ok, we'll put them in you, but I'm telling you, it's not gonna feel good. :P
@bakagaijin:
But the meal is more palatable with rentals. I bought all of the Tony Hawk games up until 4 and just rented THUG. I beat the game in a weekend and I proceeded to do the same with THUG2, American Wasteland, and Project 8. Project 8 wasn't that much fun and that's where I finally called it quits with Tony Hawk.
Skate on the other hand.. I definitely get that new, fresh, exciting taste in my mouth. Do I expect it to end? I'll probably get sick of Skate around 4 or 5.
@Rey Rodrigues: About as much as Madden represents current football.
Cloral
@Frequen-Z: Uhhhh thats the rumor isn't it?
@SketchyIndividual: Don't you dare associate Activision with one-trick ponies! Tony Hawk is good for at least 15 more sequels.
lolgreg
@Frequen-Z: It's going to be a re-release of the previous TH only with new boards and background music. $69.99
lolgreg
Pro Skater: Metallica coming soon
@SketchyIndividual: Put in me in for 3 copies of "Rodney Mullen Pro Skater"
False
Remember "Tony Hawk's Proving Grounds?"
Remember "skate"?
When skate came out, that was an ohshit moment for the Neversoft crew.
emwurst
@Obey__: Tony Hawks' Skatin' to the Oldies! available for all platforms
Rey Rodrigues
@Dreyvas: Agreed. In a huge way.
I loved pro skater 2 and 4. 1 and 3 were good, but THUG really brought it home for me.
At one point in THUG 2, didn't you literally have to jump a shark? May be thinking of the psp version right enough. The games just became full of crappy additions and awful gimmicks.
I don't like this "as close to real skating as you can imagine" thing. For me, all this means is alot of broken bones and awkward posing lol.
persocom
I want to see what it's all about. A guy on the dev team has consistently said its coming along very nicely, so I'd like to see what that really means. Considering activision though, I can only assume there's a balance board coming with it
MasterOmega
Is it *really* that hard to figure out that this is going to revolve around using the Wii balancec board? "The closest thing you'll ever see to real skateboarding" really isn't possible without something like it.
Matt0505
I have owned all tony hawk games out there, and yes, they lost focus on the skateboarding, and went for more of a fun approach, almost jackass like.
It will be nice to see them go back to the days of making a skateboarding game. I hope they succeed.
mossiprose
I used to buy this certain brand of stir-fry frozen dinner a few years ago, that was so delicious, I would buy it constantly. It got to the point that I had eaten this meal so many times, it went from obsession to revulsion. Even to this day I can't eat it because I've eaten that same meal over and over so many times.
Tony Hawk video games are that stir-fry. Even years later, I'm so put off by the how often they pumped out a new sequel, and every year I would buy it and get more and more disappointed with each new version, I just can't bring myself to ever play another Tony Hawk game, no matter how good it might be.
I wonder if he is going to skateboard in this one too...
jakendo
People may hate this franchise, but I'm looking forward to see what the next game will be like.
@SketchyIndividual: in games these days*
Goddamnit.
Tony Hawk, skateboarding's one-trick pony.
Now, show me a Rodney Mullen Pro Skater, and maybe I'd be a little interested.
... actually, no I wouldn't. They'd probably use a huge hulking ugly-as-hell peripheral since that's the "in" thing to do these games.
@Frequen-Z: You'll be waiting in line for awhile.
@NexusSIX: Sure, and the skateboard controller will function identically to the Wii balance board but the two won't be compatible until Tony Hawk Hero: World Tour
Oh, great.
NyappyHeroism
Tony who???
Super_Koopa
I swear to God if theres a big giant plastic peripheral I'm going to fucking shoot some schookids.
I wonder how popular Tony Hawk would be without his marketable name. It's amazing he's 40 something and they're still churning out his games. What if his name was Alfred Chesnut? Would we see an Alfred Chestnut's Pro Skater Proving Grounds?
mellowspaz
@Rey Rodrigues: Yeah he's really old. I work at a pizza shop and he comes in almost every week. He's way old and yet his kids are like only 14 i hear.
Sheesh.
Obey__
Meh.
I haven't played them since Underground, but I have many good memories from THPS2. :)
Tony Hawk Hero! It comes with a skateboard and 4 coloured buttons.
THUG was quite good, but THUG 2 brought about the quick death of the series for me.
Tony's Hawk died a long time ago, after TH2
THPS 1 and 2 were crack. Skate 1 and 2 were crack. There is really no point to this post........sorry
Tony Hawk is like a hundred years old! he represents current skateboarding lifestyle?
Rey Rodrigues
@riceKRISPYninja: thanks,squaw.
Having played Skate It, I don't think a skateboard peripheral is a good thing. It was fun hopping around on the balance board for a few minutes, but it was impossible to get any precision. Giant Bomb said that an Activision rep said it will be as close to real skateboarding as you can get.
I think the Skate series is as close as I want to get to that. I've tried real skateboarding...it's hard.
@Dreyvas: This. Co-signed. THUG was the latest and greatest (well maybe on par with THPS2...) of all the TH games.
Eff the rest. I gave American Wasteland and Project 8 a try.... and was instantly - INSTANTLY converted to Skate.
Superlocke
@SketchyIndividual: shit you're right. i don't skate anymore because of the school and my job but back in the day I used to love watching those BAKER videos because they didn't care about style it was just about tricks and having fun.
