Next Tomb Raider Film Features Younger Lara Croft
It looks like Angelina Jolie’s time as Lara Croft could be at an end, with the next Tomb Raider movie being an origin story featuring a much younger Lara Croft.
Speaking in an interview with About.com during the premier of Terminator Salvation, producer Dan Lim explains that the new Lara Croft film will be an origin story with a strong focus on character development, which is definitely a new direction for the film franchise.
“We’re rebooting Lara Croft… It’s a great origin story that we’re going to tell, a very character-oriented, I would say more realistic than the past Lara Croft movies… It’s not full-on action. I would say it’s like Terminator, it’s character-driven action. For me, the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action-oriented. I wanted to have action, but with character.”
But who is going to play the new Lara? When questioned about the casting, with About.com’s Rebecca Murray specifically mentioning Angelina Jolie, Lin’s response was: “It is an origin story, so it is going to be a younger Lara Croft.”
So no casting news yet, but with a younger Lara Croft it seems like Angelina Jolie might be on the outs. She can still pull off pretty, but young might be a bit of a stretch. Perhaps they’ll pull a Spock and slip her in there by way of time paradox. Angelina Jolie is as good a reason for a time paradox as I can think of.

@Superlocke: I see. Eidos should have beaten Naughty Dog to the punch and made TR a 3rd person cover shooter.
@Superlocke: Well I look like a moron for failing to stop my italics, but the point still stands.
Superlocke
@Forsakenchild: Yes. Except Tomb Raider does all of those things very, very badly.
Tomb Raider has never been relevant. It's always been a sub-par platformer with an uninteresting main character.
The fact that Uncharted did what Tomb Raider has tried to do for 12+ years better on it's FIRST TRY should tell you that maybe this series was never really going anywhere.
If Eidos had spent those years and all that money on developing fresh new ideas and IP instead of trying to resurrect the dead, beaten horse of Tomb Raider they might have been a much more successful company.
Superlocke
@Yossarian: when was lara croft EVER a sex idol?
The only hot thing Lara Croft ever did was be portrayed by that random hot gymnast girl. I don't remember her name anymore, Carol something?
Either way, Lara Croft and Jolie FTL.
Superlocke
@dry-roasted-peanuts: Ah looks like we have a Legacy of Kain fan in the audience... NICE!
@oosiegewolfoo: No way. Summer Glau > Megan Fox, especially as Lara Croft.
soo....are they going to reboot Lara's boobs too? lol
squall3031
@Krizstof:
The Doctor: Mr. and Mrs. Croft, it's twins!! - oh, wait...
@DravenX23: Heck yes! She's got the perfect look, and her flexibility from dancing means her stunts would put Angelina Jolie's to shame!
Summer Glau should be the next Lara!
@Tom Clancy's Samuraidino: More angry baby face?
@Tom Clancy's Samuraidino:
I was thinking Mila Kunis.
@flyingsupernerds are go!: I don't know what that means but I am in total agreement.
TheRuiner
Angelina Jolie will forever be the only TRUE Lara for me.
Character portrait of Lara's origin sounds nice in theory, but I want the action and the tomb raiding and the gymnastics and the guns. :( I don't want it to be Lara In High School: The Gossip Girl Beginnings.
I vote for Anna Friel!
I would imagine Hollywood would clearly go for a well-known actress rather than a complete unknown in order to boost the Tomb Raider brand appeal again, seeing as the last two films got a slating, and the games aren't really doing all that great either these days... If they chose an unknown model with T&A, it might just put fans off even more...
I would like to see a much darker side to Tomb Raider though, in the same way as we have recently seen with the latest Batman films. Forget all this CGI bullshit, I actually want to see some proper deep and involving acting for once. Films these days don't have to be all about the action - They can be well written pieces of drama and still be as good...
Otherwise, it's just destined to be a flop just like the others - I can see them taking some inspiration from Tomb Raider Chronicles though...
@exion: Played the first and half of the second when they came out. No more.
Then Legend->Anni->Underworld all mightily impressed me.
I think this is one of those cases where if people are arguing if something is culturally relevant, it pretty much confirms it's still culturally relevant.
@oosiegewolfoo:
I'm sure they are looking for someone who can act.
@aubreyAubrey: Ah ReBoot. I watched it every thursday after school. Until one day I sat in front of the tv. And it had been cancelled.
Thanks for reminding me.
[kotaku.com]
@Hey_Blinkon called it, nearly a month ago.
Wait hasn't there been a few original stories already....give me drake any day go away lara you have aged badly.
@Goldwings: Has no idea why his avatar is a smiling sun: Yeah, that last point always weirded me out. In any H-Game/Visual Novel I happened to immerse myself in, at least one of the characters who you could get with would legally be 18-20 years old (as stated), but would still look several years younger than that. I always felt strange about that...
Tomb Raider lately, yeah. It's all wink-wink too-self-consciously-trying-to-be-cool.... They need to try to make Lara a real character instead of just thinking that the fact that she's a violent, globetrotting, gorgeous British heiress gives her character.
@SpokenWithInk: Ha! I thought it looked like "Kim Possible", too. That would actually be kind of interesting, watching Kim and a younger Lara on the same show. Hmmm... Somebody needs to form some links between Eid- I mean, Square Enix and Disney. Oh, wait...
Andrew Wyatt
@Forsakenchild:
ok, fair enough... I guess it's just my circle of friends and myself who've grown wary of the franchise (and I'll admit, I've not yet played underworld)...
Its good that some people are still passionate about the series, whereas I'm still pretty bitter about angel of darkness...
exion
@Gyaruson: nahh.. she always has been D. since she was born. It was only boobs in the beggining.
Krizstof
@JusticeBarProductions: More for me gentlemen.
blackfox601
Megan Fox is too dumb. She probably couldn't even fake a crappy English accent.
@Forsakenchild: Both hearted.
@exion: Well, PyramidThing covered the bases on your sales argument. And I would have to agree with him on the other issue about her being flat. I also played Underworld, had a lot of fun with it, just wish it wasn't so short.
I do agree with you on, Uncharted has set some high marks. Amazing game and the second one looks just as good if not better. That doesn't leave out room for bigger and better Tomb Raider games, though.
Overall, it just sounds like your just not into the Tomb Raider franchise, and that is fine. But there are plenty of people that are, and would like to see some improvements and better Tomb Raider games released.
Forsakenchild
@SnakeCL: Glad to see I'm not the only one who never really saw the appeal of the character. Admittedly I've never played any of the Tomb Raider games (never really did look that interesting to me), but I got dragged to watch one of the movies before by a couple of friends.
It was just unexciting watching Lara beat up on everyone in some super stylish way, it was painfully obvious that no one in the movie was going to be much of a challenge for her, and that got boring real quick.
Even her mainstream status as gaming's "sex symbol" or whatever confuses me. She looked ugly as sin since she made her debut in the original TR! How could anyone call that horse face hot? I'm guessing it was the boobs or something. I remember back when I was a kid and the first TR came out all my friends were going on about Lara Croft, but for me it was all about Aya Brea (from Parasite Eve) back then.
firefly
@frenchdestroyer: Not even just large... grotesquely swollen. Makes them sound infected. I think I'm going to be sick.
This just in, Miley Cyrus has been cast for the role and her father as the mysterious lover.
@CMcCon342:
With a body like that, she could lip sync the entire movie and nobody would know.
@PyramidThing: I believe it. But the standard M.O. these days is to remake, re-imagine, or reboot. New ideas, new characters should be easy with Star Trek- but it's easier to sell a reboot (re-imagining?) of old familiar ideas and characters, repackaged for a wider audience. As well done or clever as it may be, I'm just weary of it. Soon we'll have even more reboots like Escape from New York, Robocop, Dune. It's like everything has been thought of, and now we're going to be stuck in a loop of 20+ year old ideas getting remade or rebooted.
@Tom Clancy's Samuraidino: hmm.. I could see that last part going very well..
mat1cs: I'll make you travel-sized.
@undefined: megan fox is over rated.
@Madeira: Actually, not only is it fun, but I thought the reason why it's the way it is and why the characters are the way they are was actually pretty smart.
PyramidThing
@SpokenWithInk: That's not actually from the proposed Tomb Raider film.
PyramidThing
@exion: I'm not sure why you call Lara Croft a flat character. I've yet to play Underworld, but Anniversary and Legend set her up as a relatively complex character who, between the beginning of Anniversary and the end of Legend, changes her opinion on violence and sacredness of human life pretty drastically.
Regarding the sales of the game, Underworld (as of February) has actually outsold both Legend and Anniversary, going for 4 million sales worldwide as of February. There was that tempter tantrum coming out of Eidos, but it's looking like that was all for naught.
PyramidThing
I'll reiterate what Giant Bomb's Ryan Davis said on an episode of TANG:
"It (Tomb Raider movie) honours the source material quite well, but the source material itself is kind of dumb regardless of how impactful it is in the world of videogames. As a narrative, when you strip away the fact that you're actually playing the character, it's definitely not nearly as interesting."
I second this.
@oosiegewolfoo: Megan Fox would make a good throw rug.
seafisch
@Tom Clancy's Samuraidino: Give us megan fox as LC.
@DravenX23: x1000
She could definitely pull it off.
Iamtehawesome
@Madeira: Yeah, somehow she just looks like a super slut no - matter what. I sure hope she isn't in the soon-to-be and guaranteed awful Tomb Raider movie "origin" story, but I suppose if she was that would be one more reason not to watch it.
randomspirits
@oosiegewolfoo: No no, please NOOOOO!!!!!!
@Iskandr: for real. saturday cartoons used to mean quality entertainment. Man, I had forgotten about Reboot, loved the show.
Smidget
@Spike-Strife: I fuckin loved that show! Oh i remeber watching Enzo losing his eye in the Mortal Kombat Knock-off episode when he fought some epic Demon.
Rompehamster
....Kim Possible?
@butterbandit:
Better call up Ubisoft!
@CanadianCowboy: I'm sure it's entertaining, but I'm not really interested to see it, even though I really like ST (love TNG). The actor that plays young Kirk looks like his normal gig is on a teen drama on CW. All the possibilities of ST, and they come up with 'Kirk and Spock's first mission together!'.
@Madeira:
I gotta agree with everyone else on this one. The latest Star Trek was amazing. I've never watched a single second of anything related to Star Trek, and I loved it.
Bahhh...so Hollywood predictable. Think outside the box and go the other way. Go for a twilight years Lara Croft and get Betty White.
yeah. but its a commercial thing, predictably megan fox.
even though she used to be a dude.
che-che
@PsycheE: Yeah I am. Frankly I myself don't find her attractive. I have very narrow vision seeing as I have a girlfriend. (I find my girl much much hotter)
Younger Lara Croft? Too much action? WTF? Thats what Tomb Raider is about, ACTION. Shes female Indiana Jones. If she has to be younger, she should be played by Megan Fox. I love me some Megan Fox.
@Forsakenchild: far from it... Lara croft is a very 2 dimensional character, all attempts to change this have been wrought with fail.
Games such as Uncharted Drakes Fortune have set the benchmark for the genre...
Personally Lara Croft turns me off... The name to me is synonymous with lazy cash ins and brand exploitation... A new adventure game inspired by tomb raider but with a brand new protagonist, brand name and focus on character development (ala Uncharted) would be more up my street, and the street of a lot of other people!
People DO like platformers.
People DO like action games.
Fictional stories based on historical events? again, yes.
And of course Females are still as relevant as ever.
Tomb raider and Lara croft? No. As sales have shown, despite recent games being better than some of the terrible games in the middle of the franchises history, the sales haven't really reflected this.
Aside from a few hardcore fans (evidently ones who have forgotten every game after the third one on the PS1), most people are tired of Lara Croft... and no amount of reimagining the character is going to do away with that.
Maybe I'm just being disillusioned here, but that's certainly how it seems to me.
exion
Amanda Righetti from The Mentalist. Got the bod and the look.

@KnightsofRound: Hmmm, I might have to track them down then. I was traveling around when they originally aired and have only caught the occasional episode since. I did watch the first two seasons pretty religiously though (it and Pirates of Dark Water were great).
dry-roasted-peanuts
A reboot? LOL wtf?
Ghostwise
I suggest Jenna Haze for the next Lara Croft.
Thrillkiller
@Tom Clancy's Samuraidino:
Yes, her shiteous British accent will be the stuff of my dreams.
Wow, I went through a post about Megan Fox without saying something filthy about her breasts.
Aw, damn it.
Summer Glau
@Madeira: Sorry, your comment about Star Trek makes all your other points invalid. The new movie is fantastic. If that's "blockheaded" then count me in for more of the same please!
"Angelina Jolie is as good a reason for a time paradox as I can think of."
No sir, she is not.
Can Megan Fox do an english accent?
CMcCon342
@aubreyAubrey: I'm pretty sure there was news about a year ago of a company getting the rights to do a couple of new feature-length Reboot "episodes".

@Kenny: giggity....wait...ಠ_ಠGET HIM
@aubreyAubrey: The animation (those it seems primitive now) was my favorite part of the show; made me lose a year of college because I decided I too wanted to be an animator... then I found out I sucked at it.
fuck I hate Hollywood nowadays..

@jjammerzs:
HAHAHA! I remember reading about all the hype when they turned 18. Same with Hayden Pandamiranda from Heroes. And then...nothing happened. What did they expect, for them to start stripping the minute the clock hit midnight? Seriously, big freaking deal.
@Yossarian: makes you feel like a pedophile, just like the olsen twins, waiting for them to turn eighteen all those many years ago...
Tomb Raider is getting a reboot? Wow.
Jolie was about as perfect as you could get for Lara, even if the movies sucked. It'll be interesting to see what they do with casting.
I'd suggest "Womb Raider" as the working title, but I think someone has already done that.
@oosiegewolfoo: But she can't act if her life depended on it. I've seen some homeless with better acuity for their expression then what Megan Fox has done so far. C'mon now, aren't you all grown-ass men?.
PsycheE
@Dresan: You're right, that is how the majority of English people speak.
@Gyaruson: There's something inherently unsettling about taking a sex icon and then showing her in her younger years, isn't there?
Taking a VGILF and then switching her back to her teenie years is just a tad on the morally ambiguous side...
@KnightsofRound: Ah Reboot, back when Saturday morning cartoons were original and not all Pokemon or Yu-gi-oh knock offs and educational BS. It was interesting but I can't remember if they ever finished the series.
I heard Megan Fox's named dropped when this was being discussed somewhere else...
Hell yes, I love 'em young.
Ah the reboot. Hollywood's "we don't have any new ideas, but we can re-package old ones."
I hear GI Joe will be brilliant.
@JusticeBarProductions: yeah, I really can't stand this mind set that filmmakers are currently in. let's reboot everything! we'll call the next one Lara Croft: Origin: Tomb Raider: The Beginning! maybe moviegoers will forget there ever was a Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life!
wrong. it was complete shit.
mat1cs: I'll make you travel-sized.
Tomb Raider Babiez!

Optimus: Yes yes, quite quite.

@Forsakenchild: Oh well. No big deal there. Prolly best for her career.
@dry-roasted-peanuts: Those episodes were awesome. Oh many now I want to relive my childhood by watching Reboot, thanks guys.
@frenchdestroyer:
LOL! Sir, you have made my day.... Maybe she started all the Tomb Raiding to pay for the operations to reduce her bust... but then became addicted to 'the knife' - hence her becoming 'Jolie' Croft.
@oosiegewolfoo: Megan Fox attempting an English accent could make for the comedy of the decade....
@Spike-Strife: I vaguely remember something where they replaced Bob with an older Enzo, but I didn't watch many of those episodes.
dry-roasted-peanuts
@Werrick: That is true of the Lara of late but in the very first game (the original not the atrocious remake) the character is given very few lines yet still manages to show many complex and emotional sides.
It's the only game where Lara shows her exhaustion and humanity by sleeping for example.
She displays compassion without alienating the player (as they were in anniversary) by the flash of worry and anger towards the dogs who attack her guide in the pre Level 1 sequence.
And in the opening she shows character in many ways, matching wits talking down with Larson as well as showing weakness and openness to manipulation when Natla finds out how to get her on board.
The first game developed a strong and deep original character. The developers then set about destroying it
Rory Michael O'Sullivan
@Madeira: Did you even see Star Trek?
@Gyaruson: Just Hajime no Ippo and Cross Game for this guy. What can I say, IMO these sport anime/manga have more personality than some of the other stuff I watched.
@Spike-Strife: +1 Internets for you.
You know who I think would make an excellent screen Lara Croft? Keeley Hawes. She's about the same age as Lara would be irl. Give her some hair extentions a push up bra and some kahki hot pants, she'd be good to go!! I know this thought is completely irrelevent to this article, as it's about the new direction that the film is taking. But I can't help but think that whenever i'm watching Ashes to Ashes. Keely Hawes does the voice over for Lara in the Crystal Dynamics series' of Tomb Raider games in case you didn't know.

@chuffhoncho:
I for one have never watched startrek but that movie looks like it rocks....never did play mgs3 but um mgs2 shited all over the masterpiece metal gear solid was....

@dry-roasted-peanuts:
Lol reboot did get rebooted you watched the last 2 seasons right??
@Yaxnzax: Oh shit economic troubles, initiate operation rehash.
@[anythinghollywood.com]
Forsakenchild
@exion: What's irrelevant about Tomb Raider? It's an action based platforming game with a female archaeologist/grave robber as the hero. Are you saying people don't like platformers in today's day and age? Well, your wrong there. People don't like action games today? Well, wrong again. Fictional stories based on historical concepts are no longer relevent? Nope, people still like that. Females are irrelevant? Nope, I can personally attest to that one totally being off base.
Tomb Raider is still plenty relevant today. Its just that the studios that make the game really need to work on improving the story, game play, and length of the game.
Forsakenchild
@Madeira: That would defiantly lift off my rocket.
All jokes aside i think she would fit the role well...cuz she is young and hot.
@Yaxnzax: Are you kidding? Such a deep character needs an origin story - early scenes of a young Lara suffering crippling back pain due to her grotesquely (Sp?) swollen breasts... I smell an oscar.
frenchdestroyer
@Madeira: Replace "the new Star Trek movie with the young original crew" with "the new Wolverine" and I'd agree. As it is, I don't think you've seen the new Star Trek because it was fucking awesome.
@Goldwings: Has no idea why his avatar is a smiling sun: This is exactly what worries me. Lara is practically a godess of beauty for gamers and all people who know about it. A young lara croft would be a strange thought as then the media, or should I say a random bunch of idiots with cameras and money, will go lol gamers=pedos as they love the new younger lara.
mitch_93
@Goldwings: Has no idea why his avatar is a smiling sun:
HAHA, when I first read your comment I thought that the ending quotations were the inches symbol, which made me wonder what kind of anime you've been watching. ^_^
Wow. Looks like Kim Possible. I wonder if this series is going to focus on franchise noteables like tigers and puzzles or go somewhere completely unexpected like making her a super saiya-jin.
@Gyaruson: Hilarious! Funniest thing I have read all morning. :)
@Madeira:
Oh, we're not here to discuss whether or not she's a skank. That's very well-established. She's just so freakin' hot. Oh so hot.

So we talking about legal, barely legal or "in anime where girl is actually 19, but looks 12" legal?
@oosiegewolfoo: Ugh, I hope not. Megan Fox could put on a NASA spacesuit (helmet on, face shield closed) and still look like a skank.
@exion: damn lack of an edit button... slap "at the time" anywhere in that first paragraph...
exion
@aubreyAubrey: Blasphemy! Nobody should touch Reboot because you would have to recast Megabyte and Tony Jay was perfect for that voice.
Although, Simon Templeman would be pretty cool...
dry-roasted-peanuts
fuck tomb raider... it only made as big a social impact as it did because female protagonists and sex appeal where pretty much unheard of in games (and probably was helped immensely by the original playstation bringing gaming to the mainstream).
Nowadays Lara Croft is nothing special... a gaming grandma who some people remember fondly but most will disregard as bygone.
I say if there will ever be another game, make it a finale, and give up the ghost already. Tomb raider is no longer relevant.
exion
I don't see any appeal whatsoever in Lara Croft.@SnakeCL:
Agreed... I don't see the appeal either. There's nothing about her that's in the least bit redeeming, as far as I'm concerned. She's snotty and arrogant and worst of all... boring.
Werrick
Origin stories and prequels are abysmally lame and a cop out from having to come up with anything interesting or new. This is the perfect example of the kind of blockhead ideas I expect out of Hollywood (i.e. the new Star Trek movie with the young original crew).
Hopefully this won't have anything to do with the next game.
From their history in choosing, they don't make many bad choices.
it's definitely going to be megan fox!
dreamfall
Megan Fox would make a pretty good Lara Croft.
hmmmm...
nope, don't see a new actress saving the movies imo...
Remember cradle of life?
The only way Angelina Jolie should ever come back in a Tomb Raider movie is if they put a paper bag over her head.
I hate the word reboot right now. If anything they should reboot Reboot.

Lara is just... a completely unlikable character.
SnakeCL
I see kirsten kruek in this film.....I also see this film sucking pretty hard
I hope she goes bra raiding.
Lara Croft can't have an origin story for the same reason that Indiana Jones doesn't have one. They weren't just slapped in the face on day and decided to become archeologists because of some ridiculous tragedy, (all the rage in Hollywood these days) their parents studied history and they followed in their footsteps. So there's nothing to tell, prove me wrong.
AlucardsQuest
A origin story? They already had her origin in the other movie? They already ran out of ideas after only 2 movies that they are rebooting a series thats like 8 years old? Thats pathetic.
if you put megan fox in anything i will see it whore yes sexy as all hell yes.. and shes not the worst actor ever.. just not good@oosiegewolfoo:
Cory Rowell
the art style has a very "Kim Possible" look, I wonder who the artist is. I love the art style of that show, so I'm pretty stoked.

I want more hot Angelina Jolie! Gimme a time paradox! And get the 2 Laras to make out with each other!
mcderek3000
Oh yes, Megan Fox doing a British accent...my life just wouldn't be complete without hearing that. The poor man's Angelina can't even string together an American sentence properly, what are the odds that she'll be able to spout out semi-coherent dialogue that isn't just a stew of mangled mockney catchphrases. Rex Harrison would be spinning in his grave, I'm sure.
And as an aside, bikini models shouldn't star in feature films...well, unless they wear daisy dukes during giant robot skirmishes and helplessly flail about until the male protagonist saves them. Then it's okay.
