Nintendo’s E3 Promises, One Year Later
Nintendo promised to keep the world smiling at last year’s E3. The company made a few other predictions too, with less than stellar results…
What good is E3 hype if none of it comes true?
To get you ready for this E3, we’ve subjected ourselves to re-living the major press conferences of last year’s big show. We’ve pulled all of the predictions, promises and other verbal constructions Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony used to get you excited about their console. And we’ve seen what became of all those thrilling statements.
Nintendo, your E3 2008 promises are being checked today — exhaustively.
Background: The Nintendo press briefing occurred on July 15 at the Kodak theatre in Los Angeles. This event lasted exactly an hour, and you might remember that it didn’t go over very well.
Shaun White “Exclusive”
After demoing Shaun White Snowboarding with the help of Shaun White, Nintendo’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, Cammie Dunaway, says: “All of you can have as much fun as I just had when this game arrives exclusively for Wii by year end.”
Verdict: Hmmm. Yes, the version of Shaun White Snowboarding that you can play with the Wii Balance Board proved to be exclusive to the Nintendo Wii, but there were Xbox 360 and PS3 versions later in ‘08 too, you know.
Mario and Zelda Folks At Work
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata: “Our internal team which creates Mario games and the one that makes Zelda games are both hard at work. They will bring new titles to Wii.”
Verdict: Expected to come true someday. Not yet.
Animal Crossing Is Coming
Animal Crossing creator Katsuya Eguchi details the features for the fall’s Animal Crossing City Folk, including a new city, Wii message board interaction, the ability to send messages to cell phones and PCs too, support for the Wii Speak mic.
Verdict: All these features were included when the game launch.
Wii Speak Is On Its Way
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils Aime says: “Animal Crossing is on its way to Wii by the end of the year with the Wii Speak option.”
Verdict: Yup. He was right!
Lots of DSes
FIls-Aime: “By the end of our current fiscal year next march we expect that total DS worldwide sales will grow to almost 100 million systems.”
Verdict: Indeed. Nintendo announced that the company achieved this milestone in March, just weeks before the end of its fiscal year.
Three Key Games
Nintendo declined to show a reel of upcoming Wii games, instead showing three that would be out later in the year: Star Wars The Clone Wars, Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party, Call of Duty: World at War.
Verdict: And, yes, those games came out.
Big Franchises on DS
Dunaway: “An even more imaginative interpretation of the [Guitar Hero] franchise called On Tour Decades is on the way… the DS is also the only gaming-dedicated platform where you’ll find Will Wright’s Spore this year.”
Verdict: The new Guitar Hero came out, as did Spore Creatures. And, no, Spore on PC does not count as Spore coming out on a gaming-dedicated platform. Nor does Spore on the Wii, which is coming out this year, not last year.
More Pokemon
Dunaway announces “the next invasion of Pokemon,” the release of a new Pokemon Ranger for November 10, 2008.
Verdict: Accurate. It happened.
GTA in the winter
Dunaway: “We can announce today that a custom version of Grand Thedt Auto called Chinatown Wars arrives on DS this winter.” She added that the game will feature new characters and the “same free-ranging gameplay GTA fans have come to expect.”
Verdict: Depends on when you think winter is. If you thought this meant the Christmas holiday, you were wrong. If you thought this could include March 17, a day that’s just barely on the winter side of the vernal equinox, then you and Cammie were spot-on.
DS Non-Gaming Experiments
Dunaway describes experimental DS functionality that will inform you where your luggage is when you get off a plane and where a good restaurant might be. She says “this is all being tested,” which isn’t a promise that it will come out, but…
Verdict: Again, not a prediction, but also not something that has been released to the public yet. The only thing like it is the DS compatibility with SafeCo Field, which Dunaway also detailed.
MotionPlus Is Coming
Fils-Aime: There will be one Wii MotionPlus accessory and extended jacket packaged with every Wii Sports Resort. And of course others will be sold separately.
Verdict: This hasn’t come true yet, but is on the verge of doing so in July.
Fils-Aime: “We began our presentation today with a single image in mind: smiling facings. And we believe there will be a lot more of them when Wii Sports Resort launches globally next spring.”
Wii Sports Resort This Spring
Verdict: Ouch. Biggest mistake of the press conference. The game i slated for a June release in Japan but will definitely miss the spring in the U.S. and Europe, where it is scheduled for July.
Wii Music Will Be Fantastic
Fils-Aime: on Wii Music: “It’s safe to say it will generate a lot of smiles – new smiles – in a whole new way.”
Verdict: Subjective, but sure, why not? We’ll give you this one, Reggie.
Wii Music Fulll of Instruments
Nintendo’s chief game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto says that In Wii Music you’re going to be able to play more than 50 different instruments just by moving your body, that you can save videos of your performance and , play each part of a song before combining your performances into an ensemble piece.
Verdict: Yes, Wii Music let gamers do all of that.
Note: No mention was made during the press conference of what would become the best-reviewed Wii game of 2008, World of Goo. Nor did Nintendo mention the fall (in Japan) launch of the DSi. So, arguably two of the proudest parts of Nintendo’s future were not hyped at E3.
To Sum Up…. Nintendo’s press conference was lambasted by hardcore fans, though not entirely for the reasons that the company can’t score that well in this one-year-later review. Nintendo got the Wii Sports Resort date wrong, but stuck to accurate predictions otherwise. The problems were that the company just didn’t promise that much stuff — not compared to Microsoft the day before. And what it did promise didn’t prove to be as bold as exciting as, say, the company’s Wii Fit announcement of the year before. As an ho

@pslong9: I don't know man. They never really catered to the hardcore per se. I think Mario and all that appeals to everyone it's just as those games grew more and more complicated it was only the hardcore that stayed. And now that they're releasing more "casual" stuff and less of the "better" hardcore stuff (i.e. Pokemon Ranger doesn't count) I think that's why people feel the way they feel. I haven't touched my Wii in ages and I honestly feel that I made a mistake. Even if Super Mario Galaxy is an incredible game.
I've heard people say that sometimes these presentations read the crowd wrong, it seems like Nintendo reads the crowd wrong every year. Although it has improved slightly, I don't think that Nintendo really knows what kind of gamers are core gamers. It's hard to argue with success, but mis-steps like leaving Fatal Frame 4 in Japan delaying Wii Motion Plus so late in the system's life cycle that few companies will be able to make use of it... if they are even allowed to. And after all these years, Nintendo is still rubbing third parties the wrong way. Not to mention how they've all but abandoned the Virtual Console concept.

@Stephen Totilo: Tough teacher huh? :) I despised your type back in college ;)
@Masterpain22: Yes, thankfully this E3 will be amazing for all companies. Nintendo is going to show one of their core games that's coming out this christmas, right? right??
My bet is on Zelda Wii, or Pikmin, though I would really really really enjoy some kind of Mario Galaxy level expansion pack. OMG please Nintendo...
@Atomsk88: Glory and series of tubes for the original one hundred and fifty... one!
M.u.s.o.u.k.a
@katsujinken: So, because you haven't seen it, it doesn't exist? You must believe in the Zelda Wii, let it be your comfort and your guide.
The reason they don't throw their games out there on the net is because they want you to be surprised and excited, and they don't want other people copying their stuff. If information is released too early, it allows competitors to easily copy anything unique that you may have.
@FraGNeM: Maybe they never really cared for the 'hardcore' .. and the games were released on their plataform because there was pretty much no competition.
Maybe nintendo just was there in the exact time and place and got the right games to make people think they were focusing on hardcore when they really just were working on super mario world and starfox for the snes
xzero
Most of those posts aimed at nintendo werent even really under their control. Like jabbing at them because a game didnt release like they said that is made by another company isnt their fault.
But on the whole I couldnt care less about nintendo. I spent more time playing resident evil 4 through on my wii than I have with actual wii games. And in the past year only bought 2 games for my ds worth getting, spent more time playing GBA games on my ds than actual ds games.
Sure they makes tons of money but its all mostly just overhyped shit. Even their core franchise games are boringly sterile.
Gamecube was their last good system to be honest. So thank god for little kids who need a wii or ds because the kid nextdoor has one and a nation of parents who will buy them for them so they will shut up and be good.
Ahh nintendo, you never stop amazing me.
RAVI DRUMS!!!!!!!!!!!
By "keeping everyone smiling" do they mean by re-telling the joke about how the wii is a "next-gen" system. I waggle at all who disagree. waggle waggle
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: I'm sure Cammie is a great person, but the presentation was just terrible by making too much emphasis on how happy and smiley we will all be rather than showing good games and let us decide if we should get excited or not.
I think that they knew they didn't have enough stuff to show us for an entire hour so they decided to fill in the extra time with crap.
Masterpain22
@Matt0505: Looking over the promises from Nintendo reminded me just how disappointing their E3 showing was last time, especially if you were like me and watched the stream and afterwards regretted it because of how mind numbingly boring it was.
@Kytano-Skorpius: Ya but Dtothewayneo & Goldwings just said that they can't wait for a new Zelda. Nothing suggests the Mario & Zelda teams are working on anything related to either IP for the Wii.
@Kytano-Skorpius: I think Regie actually used the homophone "wee" as in wiener. I hear that's the stylus he likes to use when playing Zelda on the DS.
Motion plus is coming out June 8th guys. not July
@Leanid: I believe Grimer and Muk can withstand such environmental hazards.

I can't wait for Sony's "Promises Review" -- It's as if a million Fanboys cried out in terror.

I absolutely HATE the direction that Nintendo is going. With all the money that they are making, that is OBVIOUSLY my problem. However, I will still be here, waiting, when their "Wii gravy train", flips off the tracks. Waiting for Zelda and Mario to return. Waiting for Nintendo to start making REAL games again (using a NORMAL CONTROLLER) --- instead of bullsh_t arm waving to make some sort of musical sounds. Jeeze, one stupid title after another, will it EVERY STOP. The very same thing could be accomplished by turning on your iPod while playing games -- using a REAL Controller.
jamBot
@Orionsaint: They were all bragging about how good they were doing, Sony, Nintendo AND Microsoft. I think that was kind of the point of E3 last year. It was more of a buisness event and less of a public event last year since the public wasn't allowed in. All the big companies were just trying to show why people should invest in them from a buisness standpoint and trying to build confidence in their brand.
I think it'll be back to more of the spectacle this year.
@Nightshift Nurse: Yeah, I'd agree with that. I think with the lessened focus on the public most of the big companies were treating it as a buisness event last year and trying to show why they'd get a bigger share to the market over the next year. A lot of the press however still covered it as though it were Comic con or some big fan convention. This year will probably be back to more of that spectacle even though it'll still not have the crowd it used too. Man, it used to be all you had to do was work in a video game store or a video game department at a store to get in. Not so much anymore.
@katsujinken: Um...he said: "Our internal team which creates Mario games and the one that makes Zelda games are both hard at work. They will bring new titles to Wii." Notice how he says Wii at the end?
@Placentasaurus: LOL. I have never heard of YTMND.com before now. How did I miss this?

@Booji-Boy:
Hahaha Fat chance! If you go by history, starting with the N64. Nintendo only releases one major Super Mario Bros Game per current Nintendo system. When I mean Super Mario Bros Game. I mean the main series, not the crappy spinoffs.
@katsujinken: Actually I want 5, but twos all fine and dandy ;)
@alpha064:
Yes. I can't stand when a game company gets arrogant. Nintendo was 3rd not long ago with the Gamecube. They're on top of the world now and brag like crazy. Pretending the Gamecube never happened. Acting like they were always on top, also realizing that they were doing amazingly well, even without hardcore gamers, so they basically gave hardcore gamers the cold shoulders. Even though we were the ones who were there for Nintendo, even at their lowest point. I think Nintendo could have been more appreciative.
Sony also got arrogant. After ruling the market for 10 years. They thought we'd buy the PS3 for any price. WRONG!, and now they're paying for it!
Nothing short of a Super Mario Galaxy sequel will turn me on to Nintendo again. Even then, they've already sucked all the steam out of me this past year. It's just been really...meh.
Booji-Boy
Shaun White Snowboarding is the most mediocre snowboarding game ever made! Where were the wild courses and fireworks and the soundtrack that's effected by how I play in the game? Oh yeah, that's SSX. The only snowboarding series that matters. F realism! Bring on SSX Next-Gen, please announce it at E3!!!
"Verdict: Subjective, but sure, why not? We'll give you this one, Reggie."
That game blew. Come on.
KaneRobot
Ugh, that conference was so boring. The only good thing that came from it was Mega 64 making fun of it.
@Matt0505: My favorite promise is that people would smile at Wii Music.
Maybe while they're laughing at it.
roq
Wait, didn't they already announce and show some screens for some piddly Zelda: Choo Choo Chooses the DS again? While it isn't out on the Wii, they never stated they were in works for the Wii, just in works.
And while I'm not interested in it in the slightest, it still counts.

@Goldwings: Has no idea why his avatar is a smiling sun: Oh, so now you wanr TWO new Zelda games?
@Noodle-Works: Except MS and Sony aren't bridging the gap. The Wii continues to outsell the HD twins combined.

@ViolentSpank24: Way to jack my avatar that I rightfully stole from google images a year ago.
@Demonbird: Except last year's was supposed to be more towards the public in general and not as "gamer-crazy" as it has been in past years. Nintendo kind of went a little too far in that direction last year. And by kind of, I mean extremely, by a little too far, I mean way too fucking far. Like, off the chart.
pslong9
@FraGNeM: Nintendo has always been about appealing to everyone. They're doing a pretty decent job about it. Did they completely fuck up last year's E3? Absolutely. But they haven't changed a single thing about to whom they cater.

@BubbleF**kingBuddy: All PR people just try to do their job, so all of them get shit. Cammie scores more because she read a letter of her son in a gaming conference, instead of doing her job properly and announce games.

@RiotControl: Maybe this one finally tips me over the edge of selling mine, as nothing really good is coming out of nintendo lately ( haven't tried the new punch-out yet )
After the show we can make an arrangement
@Gambit09: i think he meant his penis. just guessing, though.
@Chrono is kicking ass and chewing bubblegum:
...which, let's be honest, is just a minimal upgrade upon the already successful DS.
Nintendo simply doesn't cater to the hardcore demographic anymore. Reggie's honest belief that we'd be appeased by that press conference is proof of that.
Animal Crossing, a new Wii Play, and a DS GTA game for the big "hardcore" announcements? I'd say a "C" was a generous grade for Nintendo's conference performance.
@mlubczyn: Okay, they do, but what does that have to do with this article. And with that, how does it warrant a "BTW"? Not criticizing . . . just curious. Am I missing something here?
bangbangblah
I hope Nintendo doesn't let Cammie speak this year. If she does, I hope she got the memo that says that just because your speaking on behalf of Nintendo doesn't mean that you have to speak to the gaming press like they are your children. *shudders*
@Goldwings: Has no idea why his avatar is a smiling sun: Have you forgotten? Nintendo already announced the new Zelda months ago, theres video of it and everything. It's not Zelda: TP 1.5, It's Zelda: PH 1.5 and Link travels around on a train. Also fans are worried because Nintendo announced that the new Zelda for DS will be more accessible to new players than ever before - which knowing Nintendo, translates to "shallow, lowest common denominator focused, pablum."

nothing really mind blowing.
Nintendo's press conference was like someone convincing you to eat worms with candy sprinkles on it. sure the sprinkles are good but you're going to avoid it cause there are WORMS IN IT! they tried to make something that they knew wasn't exciting into something that was. and it created poor kids around NA to desperately buy any decent Wii game they can find.

@TheHeeyyy: If Ravi Drums does not make a return appearance at this year's E3 it will be a major disappointment
It will be a major plot twist if Ravi Drums shows up at the Microsoft or Sony show. That would be a major asset for Nintendo to lose, but after Wii Music didn't sell so hot I heard Nintendo blamed it all on Ravi Drums and threw donuts at him until he ran past the legal line restricting firing donuts at fired people (Nintendo's front door). If this rumor is true it may just be a huge upset that Nintendo may find will be their biggest mistake of this gen and next gen. Although considering 360/PS3 is are already considered next gen and that they're practically a gen ahead of Nintendo, if Ravi Drums switches sides from Nintendo to Microsoft/Sony, he could be the first person to cross three different gens during the same gen in history, without the aid of plutonium at least.
Needless to say there is one man with two drumsticks that will decide the outcome of this E3, and I don't mean Colonel Sanders
Did we correct yesterday's Fallout DLC comment in the MS review?
@Foxstar is in love with Kotaku's two Brians.: Nerd rage aside, it was a dud of a presser. Though last year's E3 was pretty much of a snooze all around...Nintendo was busy spiraling off into it's own little world...Sony wasn't ready to really bring anything overly surprising/major to the table...and Microsoft was so smug about their (then) current position that they felt no need to really reach for anything.
@DARTH_TIGRIS: Refresh. It got clipped off. I gave them a C. Microsoft would have gotten an A if all their promises came true. And would have gotten an A-plus if said promises were exceptionally bold or hard-to-believe.
@Dtothewayneo: I really hope Nintendo takes the "Majora's Mask (favourite Zelda game) route" or anything else a little different for the next Zelda. I don't feel like playing Zelda: TP 1.5, but something like what Ocarina to MM did while keeping the core gameplay would be awesome.
Now it doesn't have to be about masks, but I hope Nintendo can do something else with the franchise. Oh and please Nintendo, I don't care too much for what my next transportation device will be. Epona was fine.

I didn't get angry then and still don't get what all the mouth foaming was about, because hardcores mean shit for sales even WHEN they buy a game. If it wasn't for Sega pouring money into a anime, along with heavy marketing, VC would -still- be sucking hind tit sales wise.
@DarthVegan: Ah, right, the time they made the boring bit into an LBP show.

Of course they aren't catering for the hardcore as much as in the past. That's the whole point of the "blue ocean" strategy.
Nintendo announced that they couldn't compete in the traditional gaming marketplace while Microsoft and Sony were slitting each other's throats. So they decided to create a new marketplace (and customer base) and attempt to dominate that.
They basically said straight-out that they were moving their focus away from hardcore gaming and towards a newer, untapped demographic. Why would anyone be surprised when they actually did so?

nintendo needs to get every single game they can on the virtual console, and they need to do it by yesterday. The pace that games get released couldn't even be defined as a trickle, a bunch of slugs could get stuff on there quicker.
