PS3 Sales Up 288 Percent From Last April
The PS3 has outsold the Wii for the past two-and-a-half months. That we know. What percentage the Japanese PS3 sales have spiked since the same month last year, that we didn’t — until now.
According to April data released by Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, PS3 sales are up 288 percent from the same period last year. The reason for the dramatic increase was the Blu-ray release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete. The flick was bundled with the eagerly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII demo.
A sign of things to come when the game is released only on the PS3 in Japan?

I thought the demo was great. However, if Sony REALLY wants to garner the MASSIVE sales in the WORLD, then have Square do an exclusive remake of FF7 for the PS3. All of the FF7 fanboys would cream their pants. I, however would love a remake of FF5 or 6 on the PS3 personally :) Although a remake of FF7 would be totally awesome :)
Just a statement
jikifreak
@wazzzup16:
that was a jerk move.
@Thomaticus:
FF games usually sell roughly even between Japan and NA.
kNZA
@deanbmmv:
S-E would have to be insane not to release on 360!
>30M systems to sell to by the time FF13 comes out!
You bet your ass Sony ponied up for Japanese exclusivity - MS would have loved to be able to offer FF13 in Japan...

@El-Suave: I agree that there aren't really any system selling games these days though I will be interested to see if there are any sales spikes around the time GT5 releases.
Likewise I think Tekken 6 and Final Fantasy XIII will shift some machines so whoever has the better lineup of games around their release might come better off. So far that's looking like it will be Sony but who know's what Microsoft have up their sleeve.
If Microsoft buy out EA than maybe they will be onto something but other than that I think the gap between Sony exclusives and 360 exclusives is only going to widen.
Mike Newlad
@FillionSmythe: Even though it sounds so ridiculously stupid, i am sure it would sell like CRAZY.

@Rotmm: Microsoft is better at localization than Sony or Nintendo? o__o But...
But...
Those wouldn't be the companies in charge of translation...
HJSoulma
@Thomaticus: Indeed. It's going to be genuinely interesting to see how the FFXIII sales numbers compare between the 360 and the PS3. We all have ideas about how the demographics differ between the two systems, but genre-defining multiplatform titles give us a useful indicator (and surely FFXIII is the quintessential JRPG).
BritBloke916
@deanbmmv: Thing is I doubt MS paid for getting the game on their system either. They may have offered to aid with things such as localisation (where they are are clearly better than Sony or Nintendo), but Square looked at the userbase of the 360 in the West and wanted a piece of it.
Rotmm
My friend does a better cosplay of Yuna than that.

@FillionSmythe: new broom peripheral will sell like hotcakes, and the parents will approve.
Forget the US, if you can almost triple your sales in Japan.. why not do it. I think this shows how good of a move it was for Sony to get FFXIII exclusive in Japan. They could have done it in the US, but truthfully, Japan will buy more FFXIII than the US will.
Thomaticus
@bobtheduck: other 8 1/2... Forgot to not include MGS4 in the count, since I did say "other"
@atrimus: This. And I'm pretty fond of my other 9 1/2 boxed games and crapload of PSN titles, too... I only ditched 3 games so far (two of which (heavenly sword and Ninja Gaiden Sigma) I'll buy back when I have a full time job, though by then they'll be 20 dollars or less)
@kitsuneconundrum: I preferred VIII over VII probably because I played it first out of the two.
Mike Newlad
@Rotmm:
Thing is I doubt they will of paid for exclusivity in Japan. It was already exclusive to them globally. MS just bought multi-plat for most of world, except Japan, cos they don't have enough 360's there to make any money on getting Japanese FFXIII made.
@Archaotic: And FF2 and FF3 were both MUCH better than FF1.
A 5 gig demo damn that won't even fit on one 360 disk if the demo comes out for the 360 it would be the first muti-disk demo, I think. Damn how many disks will the full be maybe they should just sell the game as a hard drive it would be like using cartriges again.
@mornelithe: And that is due to money from microsoft. The PS3 only in Japan is due to money from Sony. And Squ'eenix makes bank.
@trevortibble:
Happens every time Square jumps ship. The internet wasn't as big, loud, or as expansive about the time when FFVII was made for the PS1, but the prevalent mood was about the same - FF had always been on Nintendo, and it going over to Sony was like being told that pastrami on rye had suddenly been banned and replaced with pastrami on white.
Now FF has put out some of its greatest hits on the PS1/2, and is what a bunch of gamers refer to now when they talk about "childhood memories", the rage induced in them when it jumps over to the Xbox competitor is similar. Even though pastrami on rye is still available to them, pastrami on white is also being sold, and that very thought fills them with disgust.
Not to mention Video Games Come From Japan, and to me personally seeing Japanese companies crawling over to the Expanded (read: American) videogame market in hopes of business is like seeing friends I've grown up with since the mid-80s suddenly move away and tell me they're not my friends anymore because that white kid on the other side of the road has more money.
I mean, you people complainining about the Wii having shitty games (read: not catering to "HARDCORE" anymore)? I've been through that already. I've had to teach myself to enjoy FPS games and third-person shooters and yell at other people over Xbox Live/PSN. And sooner or later I'm going to have to learn how to waggle properly, because let's face it; Nintendo is the future. Not our future. But it is a future.
@icepick314:
i'll let Sony worry about sales. it's been "The Year of PlayStation 3" for me every since MGS4 shipped.
@kitsuneconundrum:
Except that FF6 was the best one on SNES. :P
@FillionSmythe:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
That would be the much sought-after "FINAL NAIL IN TEH SONY COIFFIN11"
@trevortibble: And how much of a bigger deal it was for Sony to pay for Japanese exclusivity.

Sony has made its move...
Sony has taken command of an immense publisher and is now preparing to unleash a PS3 insurrection.
@kitsuneconundrum: lol
@El-Suave: Yeah. And it's mostly because comapnies aren't willing to do exclusives anymore. The games are costing mroe to make and only releasing on a single system isn't viable for the most part.
Unless Microsoft pays you to.
@Accordion: Thanks!
@Machzy: I think we saw here here on Kotaku a year or two ago.
@Kristopher.W:
S-E has stated they have no plans for an English version of the demo.

well, the best final fantasy's were always the first of the new platform if you look back at it.

@El-Suave: Business...has changed.
now i realize why it was such a big deal when microsoft paid to get into this.
trevortibble
PS3 will lead up until Nintendo bring out Wii House Chores.
agred.
its really unfortunate that such a bundled package is not (yet) available in north america because i think it would lead to a significant sales boost in the ps3. for the life of me i can never understand why scea dont ever consider the potential to do so here what they in japan - especially with something like Final Fantasy. like someone above already mentioned, the demo could suck big time but it's still going to sell like mad just because it is Final Fantasy.
@Valkrin: And no game will do that anymore, that has been proven again and again this generation, and not just for PS3. Price cuts are the only thing that can help Sony - their game lineup is good enough already (albeit lacking in the RPG sector). The age of the systemseller is over.
El-Suave
@Creo: Yeah, definitely....anybody know where there are more pics of her...? =)
Machzy
Or a sign of things not to come when the game is released in the US on 360 and PS3? The PS3 has almost always done better than the 360 in Japan, will continue to do so. Its the US where it really needs the sale boost.

hopefully my girlfriend will look like her if i get her that outfit :D
@kitsuneconundrum: FF2 and 3 were better then the original. FF6 is better then 4 and 5. And FF8 and 9 were better then 7. Can't say I agree with you.
MARl0
@FillionSmythe: You mean Harvest Moon? ¬_¬

Well I am buying mine in July so sony can be excited for another sale :P

@kNZA: I believe that they already into the PS3 development when they announce XBOX360 version and probably zero XBOX360 development at that time. Until that time almost all people believe that FF13 gonna be PS3 exclusive. Probably Sony paid FF13 exclusive in Japan and MS also paid for FF13 to be released simultaneously with the PS3 version in region other than Japan.
Yes, MS would be insane not to release on 360... but the simultaneous release is a bit strange except if MS paid for it.
Everyone happy and SE wins :)

FF? Pff...Nah still waiting for which console the next Dragon Quest will release on. That will move mountains in Japan.

@orgil220:
The world goes into mass recession as all the customers will not leave their house until they have completed the game. Which won't be long really because 67% of the game will be FMV.
@Mr. Tambourine Man:
Games... have changed..
It's no longer about Madcatz controllers, memory cards, or DVD players.
It's an endless series of exclusive games, bought by Microsoft and Sony.
This business, and its consumption of exclusives, has become a well-oiled machine.
Games have changed..
Expensive consoles sell expensive exclusives to broke gamers.
Living inside their mother's basements enhance and regulate their wallets.
Remote control. Motion control. License control. Copyright control.
Everything is paid for, and kept under control.
Games have changed..
The age of gaming has become the age of exclusive content.
All in the name of averting catastrophe from rich, incompetent casuals.
And he who controls the exclusives, controls casuals.
Gaming has changed..
When 3rd parties are under complete control... Games become routine.

@Sweetchorizo: You think the 360 uses CDs or something?
sounds like everyone in japan, has a wii. so thats why the sales have dropped. unless they decide to buy more than one per household. only explanation for this.

:)
Bubbleman!
@ceilingFANBOY: this is very possible.
@Valkrin: This could be one of the instances where the attach rate for the PS3 is higher than the attach rate for the 360 and may sell more PS3s than 360s because Final Fantasy is a game that most people think of either Nintendo or Sony first when you hear that name.
@surft: And Wii after that
cakeman19
@Sweetchorizo: You think they can't use compression technology? Also your lack of knowledge on DVD storage space is face-palm worthy but luckily for me Okenny was here.
xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx
@Sweetchorizo: Ugh, I'm no 360 apologist, but most of its games are on DVD9, aka dual layer DVDs which can store up to 9GB of data.
I think you could have said something talking about file size limitations for downloads on Live but I'm not sure that's true anymore.
afrosheen
@surft: DS then Wii from what I heard.
xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx
@Chaosrayne: "Nintendo is the future."
God I hope not. That'd be some kind of dystopian future where robots run the world and we're all forced to jump up and down on Wii Fit boards to power them. But the irony will be that since casuals have destroyed gaming, everyone will actually enjoy it.
Fuck that.
afrosheen
@PatrickF**kingStar: Not too shabby but you fell off the boat going on about exclusives. That's what the Nintendo/Sega wars were all about...and pretty much how it's always been.
afrosheen
@Accordion: "Click for enlarge" pretty much says it all.
afrosheen
@undefined: Nevermind Japan. That's a given due to exclusivity.
I want this to be the sign of things to come for when FFXIII hits NORTH AMERICA.
Then maybe, just maybe, we can finally put all of this crap to rest.

I dont think most of you really understand how beautiful the game looks until you see it being played live. Easily the most stunning looking game so far this gen. Probably some of the sickest textures I've ever seen.

@surft: DS
That picture gave me a horrible thought. REAL LIFE FINAL FANTASY MOVIE. I just shudder at the thought.
sentroshi
@ceilingFANBOY: No, they really only think of Sony, because a vast majority of Final Fantasy fans have never played anything before VII. Either way, people shouldn't look to consoles when it comes to video games, but rather the games themselves. That's what real gamers do. In this case, I think the PS3 version will end up superior, but... we'll see, I guess.
@afrosheen: Its more like 7.5GBs per Xbox 360 DVD. The copy protection data is over a GB per disc.
@Bergerac:
Don't pay attention to said "crap."
Seems to do the trick for me.
@boots555: In the unlikely event that the people who played God of War 1 & 2 don't have a PS3 already, it is still only a small number of people that franchise is aimed at. The God of War1 and 2 sold 3 and 2.5 million copies each. Gran Turismo 3 and 4 sold 15 & 10 million copies each. There is a clear difference between which is more likely to be considered a system seller.
2.5 million played the last God of War, what are the odds that at least half of them don't already have a PS3?
As for Heavy Rain, most of the world have no clue what it is and that includes a lot of people that have seen it in action. It is not a system seller on it's own but combined with the rest of Sony's rather impressive lineup it might help tip the balance.
Mike Newlad
@Bubbleman!:
A lot of people are critics I guess, but I must agree with you, after playing it on my hd monitor I'm left speechless as to me I feel like it's the best looking game I've seen in a longgg time. That goes for graphics and art direction

@xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx: wow a good backing of info like the words "most" being used. All I pointed out was on the average dvd (you know the 4.7 ones) and also the thing is that the demo is in the blu-ray and I don't think I need to point out the limitation there. I also noticed no one mention anything about my "Damn how many disks will the full be maybe they should just sell the game as a hard drive it would be like using cartriges again." comment.
