Punch-Out Caters To Nintendo Fanboys With A Secret Character

It can be argued that many of Punch-Out’s characters are big Nintendo names in their own right. But that’s a pretty thin argument. They don’t have the pulling power of, say, Donkey Kong.

Punch-Out!! – more footage of that secret character [Go Nintendo]

  • NINTENDO_ZEALOT

    Not bad, not bad, just one character is enough, unlike a past Nintendo brawler, my only complaint about Punch-Out!! is disco kid is the only new boxer, I would have been fine with no new boxers, but I'd rather see a few more Super Punch-Out!! boxers.

  • Hey_Blinkon

    @thatonebigdude: No, saying that ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE APES would be racist. Comparing an individual is not. It is possible to insult/criticize/satirize people who are not of one's own race, and not be racist. Political Correctness will be the downfall of society, mark my words.

    Hey_Blinkon

  • HowardC

    The lack of an option to play as the enemies is a very practical one that you guys all seem to be overlooking. Little Mac is "little" for a reason... it's so he doesn't take up much of the screen so you can see the opponents well. Even with translucent characters, it'd be REALLY hard to see any action, especially playing as giants like Mr. Sandman.

    HowardC

  • Hey_Blinkon

    @ All: Apes are one of the closest relatives to humans. As a result, we ALL look like apes. Some more than others (the apeiest guy I've ever seen is Ron Perlman, and he's white) If you can't see that, you're blind.

  • doomsaber

    @DarkHogosha:

    Seems sort of anticlimatic that the bonus char that every gammin site would not reveal till now is DK.

    I mean, the hype made me assumed the char would be someone like Tyson, which I know would not happen, or some popular punch out related char

  • MasterSauce

    Wait Wait Wait Wait...They don't have a little squat Mario looking guy ref'ing the fights? DUDE?!?! Lame. Why would they bring in some...normal looking person? Seriously lame.

  • Ryodestined

    That's cool DK is a hidden opponent, but I also find it rather unappealing but its limited multiplayer. I get that it's more of puzzle-like in its gameplay, but when you get into multiplayer, puzzles are out the window. I see no reason why the other opponents couldn't have been tweaked a little and made playable in the Vs. mode. I'm not discounting the single player game in anyway.

    Oh, and think about this: If the opponents would have been playable, there could have been a "Revenge" mode, where you play as the opponents fighting Little Mac, and you'd have to figure out how to get around him. Sounds like fun, no?

    Fighting a character is never as much fun as fighting AS a character, is my point.

    @Kyattsuai: It's like Virtual Boy's Telero-boxing all over again!

  • serotoninzero

    This would have been a sweet game to add DLC for. Think about it! DLC boxers would have been awesome. Since each boxer is like a new level to beat, they'd actually be worth it. And doing it this way we could fight against so many different people from the Nintendo world.

  • serotoninzero

    @noesmano: Terribly awesome!

    I love it cause it's so horrible. That's not why I used to love it, but now it's why. Like the Zelda cartoon. "Excuuuuuuuuuuse me, Princess!"

  • Demonbird

    @resvrgam:
    "Mike Tyson IS a big ape...and that has NOTHING to do with the fact he's black. "
    This. Someone can see this as racist, but Mike Tyson can easily be considered a big ape.

  • RyuuzakiBjorn

    He just got Donkey Punched!

    I was hoping the Nintendo Character was Captain Falcon, So I could Falcon Paunch everyone, but this is good news none-the-less!

  • serotoninzero

    @ray89: Jungle Beat is pretty awesome. But a new Donkey Kong Country game would be awesome. 2.5D is perfectly fine with me.

  • serotoninzero

    @StillLee: Have you ever played Punch Out!! ever? Like any version of it? It makes no sense to play as anyone else. Nobody else has the basic moves that Little Mac does. Everyone else has special specific moves that are flawed in some way. While it would have been kind of cool to play multiplayer where the other person took control of one of the other boxers, it wouldn't have been equal. It doesn't make sense.

    This game is ridiculously awesome. It's worth every dollar you can throw at it.

  • KichiGuy

    I hate to be too optimistic/greedy, but I wonder if there's any other secrets in the game. My copy will probably arrive from the Amazon in 2-3 days. DK looks really tough.

  • Xaif

  • StillLee

    @HighSpeedIndeed: Um, how about Mr Sandman, Super Macho Man, Don Flamenco, Great Tiger... ...

    I mean, I don't know about you, but technology has kind of advanced just a little bit since 1987. Having 'multiplayer' as Little Mac vs Little Mac ONLY sounds like gimmicky last second development bullshit.

    StillLee

  • Kyattsuai

    @Preyfar: Or maybe a boxing Kangaskhan, except that would entail a lot of... you know... baby punching.

  • RidleyTJN

    @b-radicate: Punch-Out!! and Fight Night have about as much in common with each other as Fallout 3 and Final Fantasy X. Because they're both RPGs doesn't mean they're the same thing. Likewise one has you playing as a bevy of characters while the other has you only playing as one. Punch-Out was never designed to be played as multiple characters. It's more of a puzzle game with a boxing theme.

    RidleyTJN

  • resvrgam

    @BubbleF**kingBuddy: Haha! Anyone that didn't think that was funny is either a brainwashed white person suffering from "white guilt" or too afraid to see the humour beyond political correctness.

    Mike Tyson IS a big ape...and that has NOTHING to do with the fact he's black.

  • Junky Rhodes

    Grr... When is Nintendo going to learn to NOT give Donkey such a wussy voice. Although, seeing this video makes me want to get up and go get the game

  • noesmano

    @BarbeQueQ: Wait? You can only play as one character?

    Wow. I don't care how nostalgic (and let's face it, that's what Nintendo games like this are) a series is, playing as one character is bullshit. If the next Fight Night only let you play as one boxer there would be a huge uproar about lack of variety/functionality/effort/what have you.

    But, of course, Nintendo gets away with such bullshit. We are a sad lot.

  • SaanZ

    @thatonebigdude:

    Most people dont really see a racial element to being compared to a monkey. "dumb ape" was and is a neutral insult to me and many people.

  • Anarchist_Gamer

    @GauntFaceKiller: No, dude. I tried to watch those last December and had to stop. They are by no means awesome. They are fucking terrible. There's no arguing this one. Good for laughs, I guess. But the laughs are accompanied by tears. Just like the various Mario Bros. cartoons and the Zelda cartoon.

  • phrequency

    @phinehas: i was hoping for captain falcon. u know... FALCON PWNCH! insta-ko!

  • shouryuuken

    @Hey_Blinkon: yeah, jungle beat was amazing. i wrote it off at first, but after i got paper mario.. i was in a platforming mood.. so i looked up random games.. and the reviews for dkjb were really good. so i picked it up for cheap.. and it was a good choice!

    @ray89: although it didnt have ladders, there was plenty of platforming, jumping around, collecting bananas was the most important part because it had an old school "gotta get the high score" feel to it. the best part was they made dk a real brute.. he was punchin everything hard as hell. i loved it. boss fights were incredible (until they started to repeat), and you even rode animals somewhat similar to dkc. it was a great game, and the first project the super mario galaxy team worked on.

  • Agumen

    I've given Nintendo a bit of grief like a lot of people for their poor release schedule over the last year for traditional gamers. Great to see that they've still got the touch.

    An update to an old favourite that doesn't try to reinvent the wheel but is polished to a shine? Making good use of non 1st party studio partners like in the GC era? DK as a secret fanservice character? That's the kinda stuff we've been wanting to see. I only ever played punch-out a couple of times, but sign me up.

    Well played Nintendo. If you take some stick you also deserve credit where it's due.

  • shouryuuken

    @HighSpeedIndeed: lol wow.. did you even really play jungle beat? im guessing youre referring to the original 3 donkey kong games.. which were okay.. but not nearly as fun as donkey kong country. im 26, and dafthero is 24, although i played original donkey kong on nes, dkc is our generations most remembered donkey kong game. how old are YOU?

    if youre referring to a donkey kong game that although good, isnt as fun as a traditional platform game.. but one of the outdated single screen platformers.. then its been less than 3 years since one of those came out.

  • shouryuuken

    @GauntFaceKiller: mega man and simon belmont were in it too.

  • shouryuuken

    i sent this in, im sure i wasnt the only one though.

  • HowardC

    @NINTENDO_ZEALOT:

    I *think* I know the reason for the rather odd character roster as well. You'll notice when playing that each character speaks in his native language. The regions the characters are from (with the exception of bald bull) just happen to be representing the major release areas for nintendo. The super punchout roster is primarily japanese.

    Also the super punchout characters often use kicks, weapons and other illegal stuff. If you'll notice the characters they selected mostly follow the rules.

    As for diso kid, he was added to represent an (ahem) more flamboyant demographic now that it's 2009 and not the 80's when the sort of thing was more taboo.

    I do agree though, more characters would have been really nice. A less lame boss character would have been nice as well. Historically Sandman was the boss in the arcade games, BUT keep in mind that in both the arcade and the console games, he was merely a pallette swap of bald bull with his moves sped up. (No bull charge obviously). In this iteration they seem to have given him Tyson's/Dreams moves instead, which makes me wonder why they just didn't use Mr. Dream.

    @BarbeQueQ: It's obvious that those who expected Punch Out to have more than one playable character is on the "younger side", or have no idea what the franchise is about. They see that it's a boxing game, and automatically think it's like Fight Night, or Ready To Rumble.

    So, when DK beats you he takes off with Little Mac with a sex-offender grin on his face?

    .... *shudders*

    @b-radicate: Any game that only has one playable character is bullshit?

    That's bullshit.

    It's gonna be a chilla, and a killa, and a thrilla, when I get the Gorilla in Manila.

    P.S. Frazier > Ali

    @BubbleF**kingBuddy: It's quite funny. Don't listen to the haters.

    I can see comparing Tyson to an ape because of his stature and personality, not his race.

    A suitable replacement for Mike Tyson.

    @shouryuuken: I'm older than you guys, but not by much. The ONLY REAL Donkey Kong games, in my opinion, are the ones that stick close to the original arcade formula.

    DKC was great despite diverting from the formula, but everything after that just has no connection to the gameplay of the original arcade games. I liked Mario vs. Donkey Kong a lot and the earlier Game Boy titles.

    I played Jungle Beat briefly, but honestly I thought it was a gimmicky suckfest!

    "Take this! And some of these! This one is for DK Jungle Beat and this one is for DK64!"
