Yea I had that problem too- as far as I can tell, selecting expert causes the game to go FUCK YOU and switch to the old GH1 way of handling hammer ons and pull offs. hard difficulty is about equivalent to expert on the actual at home games. The other thing is the instrument is fairly hefty, and the buttons harder to press so you get tired quicker

@CI254: The dodge issue could easily be fixed by having 3 pads by your feet for dodging.

@manpersonguything: I used to play one in the arcades where you physically grabbed onto two joysticks mounted on massive metal swing-out arms. You used these arms to move around your opponent, or punch. And the whole unit rotated, so that you could rotate around your opponent. It was actually a lot of fun, and a good workout.

Though the few months in which I played it, the game became visibly harder and harder to to move, until the point where it basically seized up on itself. But for the 16 bit era, it was amazing.

Konami has "mo-cap boxing" out currently, but you just waive boxing gloves around a sensor. It's not nearly as satisfying.

i would make a few changes if i were to make one. id make the buttons out of piezos or something else that isnt an actual button. id also change the block buttons into maybe something on the glove or floor.

but yeah, thats pretty cool.
the one thing i cant stand about these boxing games is that there's no kickboxing games. i do muay thai and i think a kickboxing game would be badass :D
itd also be a good way to practice when my sparring partners arent available and i dont feel like shadow boxing or just punching a dummy. i think a game attached would make it a little more interesting,

and where do you live where you can get a slam-man for free on craigslist? ive been scouring that site for a punching bag / dummy (maryland)

@serotoninzero: Yeah, the delay definitely seemed like it was due to the fact that he has to fully extend his gloved hand to the button in time, compared to the NES version, where you thumbs are already touching the appropriate buttons.

@manpersonguything: They have a couple of similar versions in arcade. Fist of the North star has 6 pads that pop out to hit, and there is a boxing game that has a head you do uppercuts too.

@serotoninzero: I don't mind emulation with vaporware or abandonware (where there is absolutely ZERO chance of obtaining a game), but if a game is still commercially viable, I find it wrong to emulate it illegally.

I shouldn't have said that. The point is this man's project. I think this could have its uses.

@Ueziel: Yes, but one major warning if you want to try it - on the version I played at Six Flags recently, there was major lag that made it very difficult to really play. Unless there's a way to calibrate the machines, they are simply screwed when it comes to any serious play.

@CI254: I don't think the delay is between the button being pressed and the action being done, but more so between the person noticing when to punch, dodge, etc. and then having to fully extend his arm into a button before the process starts. You're right though, its a little impractical because of that delay, but there's really nothing wrong with his idea just that having the actual button press at the end of your swing adds too much delay.

And Drummania/Guitar Freaks are still in the top 10 arcade games in the world.

This is pretty cool. Not a fan of emulation, but since its for educational purposes, not bad. Maybe they will turn this into a better prototype.

I was wondering, why didn't they make each quadrant a larger button so that when the glove hits that part of the body, a signal picks up and does the corresponding action on the screen?

I would probably buy this if it were released. :P

@Chris Larkin: Well, one of the achievements in the new Punch-Out!! is precisely knocking Glass Joe knock you down three times and then letting him win by decision.

@CI254: Combine that with having to punch the Slam Man to dodge and other functions as well. It has great potential though.

If you could incorporate head tracking and have pressure sensitive pads on the Slam Man, this would be a very impressive arcade game.

very cool idea. i wish we still had arcades here in America. Imagine what we'd have with the technology and imagination applied to arcades today? There's only Gameworks these days... and they only have dated boxes, DDR and "strap in and ride" games. Imagine a Punch Out Arcade? or a GH/RB arcade version?? Lights, smoke, effects, surround sound? Yeah yeah, Guitar Freak... but that was before GH and RB sold billions.

That doesn't seem very practical to play at all.
It looks cool, but you see in the video that there's a noticeable delay with the button being hit and the action being done. And with such split second reactions needed, there's no way you can win with this thing.
