Red Steel 2 Is Wii MotionPlus Only

Red Steel 2 may not have multiplayer, but it does have Wii MotionPlus. No, make that, it requires the Wii MotionPlus add-on.

According to the latest issue of Nintendo Power, Ubisoft has confirmed MotionPlus only. “It’s a huge risk,” said Red Steel 2 creative director Jason Vandenberghe. “We have no idea what the penetration rate for Wii MotionPlus will be. We assume high. We would like it to be high.”

Sure you would. Vandenberghe went on to tell Nintendo Power that he would love to say the game was compatible with a regular controller, but that the gameplay just wasn’t there.

errrrr. i wanted at least multiplayer. but nintendo better thank ubisoft because i will have to buy motion plus because i want this game

  • giovonti

@Cavefish: maybe this is a move by nintendo. maybe they're giving ubisoft some money to require motion plus for this game in efforts to get more consumers to buy the motion plus devices in order that they could make it more profitable to make more games using the device.

    @lolomfgisuck: Ubisoft = Nintendo?

  • BassForever

@JustJake: Hopefully there will be some big bold letters on the box that says REQUIERS WII MOTION + SOLD SEPERATLY <_<

  • smcallah

@lolomfgisuck: Yeah! Typical Nintendo! Because they are responsible for the development of both Red Steel 2 and FF:CC... right?!

  • smcallah

@deanbmmv: Really? The majority of the Wii base owns Wii Sports. The majority of the Wii base probably wants to own Wii Sports Resort.

Wii Sports Resort is packaged with the Wii Motion+, it's the only way to get Wii Sports Resort, and the only way to PLAY Wii Sports Resort.

So that puts all Wii Sports Resort owners as being able to play Red Steel 2.

And they haven't even said yet if Red Steel 2 will be packaged with Wii Motion+ or not, much like Tiger Woods.

  • SaanZ

    @nikolaj:

It shouldnt be THAT expensive... and just having a seperate bundle would be fine

  • illiniphase4

@Altima NEO: Agreed. We still don't even really know how much improved Motion+ really is. All of Nintendo's presser on the subject go into the Wii games that they are releasing for it, but I've yet to see any specifics on exactly how much more accurate the new control setup is going to be.

Ubi is taking a huge risk here.

    @Crash__Man:

I think people were kind of hoping for an all inclusive third option.

I am getting tired, and I assume other gamers with dwindling bank accounts are as well, of the constant barrage of accessories.

And I'm not singling out Nintendo, though they are by far the most guilty. With all the rumors circling of new motion devices for the PS3 and the 360, they're joining Nintendo in dancing on my wallet's grave.

try ENJOYING a game for what it is.... -Crash__Man

That's really all I want to do without dropping more cash on more peripherals and without needing a degree in Consology to set it all up and read game boxes.

Sheesh. I left computer gaming for the simplicity of consoles...looks like it might be time to...no. Forgot about the thin wallet.

  • doubtful

    @Cavefish:

To begin with, no one shuts up the internet. No one!

Secondly, the only reason there will be less naysayers is because they're cutting their market severely by requiring a peripheral.

Less people will talk about it simply because less people will play it.

  • Xaif

@NicolasCage: I agree, I wouldn't be surprised if most stores do some sort of bundle with the Wii + Wii Sports Resort like a lot of places did with Mario Kart. In fact Nintendo might even release a new Wii SKU with it in the box.

@buttersstotch: lol, dude : I know where they got their name from, I'm french and I worked for them ^^ (actually, it's called Ubisoft because Yves Guillemot wanted to have companies all around the word, in what he succeeded)

That does'nt give anymore sens to Chozo's "pun".

  • Culebra

@DukeOfPwn: My thoughts exactly. Requiring Motion Plus shows that they have their minds on the right track.

Personally, I think they should bundle it with the game, the way Donkey Kong 64 came with the Expansion Pak. Elliminates consumer confusion and gives incentive for the core gamer to pick up the game.

  • MarquisMark

@lolomfgisuck: Mmm, this might be appropriate if this was a first party Nintendo title. But, uh, it's not. So, calm down a little?

Besides, if you're a "fan", you're gonna have a MotionPlus anyway, aren't you?

    MarquisMark

  • NicolasCage

Seeings as you get MotionPlus when you buy Wii Sports Resort, I don't think they will have any problem with market penetration. That bundle is going to the next big staple that stays in the Top 7 positions in the charts for 5 years.

  • Skyman747

@nworobes: Yep, but I think that handful of games were some of the best games on the system. Now we are seeing a required add-on for a game whose prequel sucked.

    Skyman747

  • Crash__Man

NEWSFLASH: if this game was NOT M+ supported you same people would be whining that the new tech was not supported and that Nintendo doesn't work with 3rd parties and that it was just another RS1 failure blah blah blah.

in other words, if gamers can never be satisfied, why should game companies try to satisfy you?

try ENJOYING a game for what it is.... you might even like it.

  • lolomfgisuck

Typical Nintendo... now all I need is the announment that tells me I need to buy two brand new DSi's if I want to play multiplayer (IE: FF: Crystal Chronicles)

Keep nickle and diming your fans Nintendo... make up for you lack of power and quality games with expensive, required, plastic garbage!

  • Haruhila

I still don't see why I should have to pay for a function that Nintendo tried to imply the controller was already capable of. Just look at all the old Wii promo trailers.

    @JustJake:

ha ha try telling people that they dont need a memory card to save their games on. AFTER theyve already been home, played a game and then somehow reckoning that theres no save data on their console and some other person (ie not a game store clerk) told them they needed one...

  • buttersstotch

@John_Norad: Actually, Ubisoft got their name from the word Ubiquitous. They said so in an interview because they explained the correct way to pronounce it. "You-bee soft" vs "Oo-bee soft", the ladder being correct. So no, its not a pun or a joke, thats how they got their name, the word Ubiquitous.

I think the OP was trying to make the point that their software isn't "with it" anymore. Sure, literally speaking, they are everywhere in the world, but are they all over like they used to be with great AAA titles? Not at all.

Congrats to both of you for missing his point.

@CHoZO: Were you trying to make a terrible pun, about Ubisoft not being ubiquitous? I sincerely hope not.

    nworobes

  • JustJake

I wonder how many people are going to buy the game then realize they need the motion plus dealy and then try and return it.

When it comes to people that are just starting to play games because of the Wii, they are not exactly the most informed on the system or games.

Can't tell you how many times I heard a person in a store ask the clerk what it all comes with and what the nunchucks are for.

    JustJake

  • KillaB43

@AznSlackerType: I think they should do the same with Red steel. Sell one with motion plus pack in. It makes things alot simpler especially when new hardware is first being offered.

    KillaB43

  • Stompy1

@Merch Wnek: Yeah, it's no suprise!

    Stompy1

  • MarquisMark

@Merch Wnek: Don't really see how two games, only one of which is a Nintendo proprietary brand, being MotionPlus mandatory proves you anywhere near correct.

I think a better prediction is that the number of games that will require the add-on will be directly proportional to how well the add-on sells - that's an easy and safe bet.

Like Vandenberghe said, Ubisoft are taking a huge risk here, but now's the time to do it: if MotionPlus takes off, they're in at the starting gate. I think that their level of success, and ultimately MotionPlus' success, will be the real indicator of what the trend will be.

    MarquisMark

  • BtownDesignGuy

To an executive, I could see this make sense. The only games on the Wii that sell well are ones that include or require some zany controller accessory. Ah, to be rich, wear expensive suits, and be charged with figuring out what "the kids" are into without actually meeting any.

    BtownDesignGuy

  • Cranker

@nworobes: It definitely does allow for a nunchuck to be plugged in.

    Cranker

  • CockroachMan

They should bundle it, like EA is doing.

  • nikolaj

    @curly haired boy:
sure, except the motionplus is going to cost nintendo a bundle to make, the wii-wheel is a piece of plastic.

    nikolaj

  • John_Norad

@CHoZO: Your sentence just does'nt make any sens.

Their games are not at multiple places at the same time ? Actually, yes, they are.

  • AznSlackerType

@Merch Wnek: And wii sports resort comes with the wii motion plus so thats a pretty bad example. then again if you want to play multilayer, I guess your gonna have to fork over some extra cash.

  • Krytha

Don't worry Vandenberghe! Even though it should be your job to not take huge risks, Nintendo will release some add-on for a music program and everyone will be forced to buy it!

    Krytha

  • nworobes

@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: I wish I could be as optimistic as you.

Though yeah, now that I think about it, Burnout really wasn't on the map at all until some of the later installments in the series.

    nworobes

  • dinga6969

So.....he is basically admitting that the first one's gameplay isn't there?

  • nworobes

@coppanuva: I was confused about that for a while after Motion+ was announced, but I'm now pretty sure that it does have the standard port on the bottom, so you can still plug in a nunchuk/classic controller.

    nworobes

  • nworobes

@Thai Tea: Uhh..."mandatory" and "required" are synonymous. Grammar fail.

    nworobes

  • nworobes

@deanbmmv: There were a handful of N64 games that required the expansion pak (Donkey Kong 64, Majora's Mask, Perfect Dark), and those games still sold reasonably well. Admittedly, I believe the expansion pak was a pack-in with at least one of those games.

What I'm saying is that this better be the Wii's Perfect Dark.

    nworobes

  • Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Sc

@CHoZO: I'm sure thats what he was talking about

    ;D

  • Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Sc

@fastpotato: It took Criterion till Burnout 3 to get everything right. 1 and 2 just sucked.

Optimistically they're atleast learning from their mistakes and even if this one sucks they may pump out an awesome red steel title one day.

  • CHoZO

@ColonelMunch: Reminds me of my Sophomore year basketball coach, in reference to the other teams defense:

    "Penetrate! PENETRATE!!"

  • curly haired boy

simple solution: bundle the motionplus with the game like the mariokart wheel.

this doesn't HAVE to be a problem.

    curly haired boy

  • coppanuva

Wait... did I miss the part where you can plug a nunchuck into the Wii Motion Plus add-on, or is this going to be wii mote online for play?

  • Jnas

    @Jnas:

Ugh, stupid comment system. Nothing to see here folks, this post is fail.

  • deanbmmv

Be interesting to see how badly sales are affected by the requirement of another Wiimote peripheral.
Guitar Hero needs a guitar peripheral, fine it makes sense it's okay.
But I'm not sure if the majority of the Wii base are up with buying little add-on's like this. £40 for a game n £20 for an add-on that only works in currently 2 games. no thanks.

  • fearing

@fastpotato: What does Nintendo have to do with a game being made by Ubisoft?

  • Jnas

    Now* = Now the

  • Combine

@Merch Wnek: why wouldn't it be? Clearly some games are going to require it to play as the 1:1 movements which will make up the gameplay will be a focus.

  • Thai Tea

Mandatory motion+ is one thing, but required is totally different. I bet half the wii owners won't be able to play this and won't care. They'll lose money for sure.

    hehehehehe penetration!

so long as the game is as cool as that trailer and is better than the first then i'm sold.

Ubisoft has really lost me over the last couple years. I don't know what it is, but the spark just isn't there anymore.

By the way, their software is far from being ubiquitous.

  • Merch Wnek

i said last year they will make it manditory for most games and ho snap look now its manditory for 2 games wiisports resort and redsteel 2

    Merch Wnek

  • DukeOfPwn

Well, if they're focusing development solely with the add-on, at least there's a chance this game will be better.

    DukeOfPwn

  • gold163

It's a huge risk for Ubisoft to publish another Red Steel game in the first place, nevermind Wii Motion Plus exclusivity.

But yeah, if it was up to me, I would have made sure that Nintendo made the damn Wii remotes able to do what they're supposed to in the first place. Then wii wouldn't need some add-on.

  • Ero-Sennin

The one thing I've learned about the Wii and supposed "professional game journalists" is this.... Never, ever, EVER listen to what game journalists have to say about Wii games.

Don't judge a game until you play it for yourself. I couldn't begin to tell you how many Wii games I've played that received bad reviews for having poor controls, when I had no problem whatsoever playing the same exact games.

  • CHoZO

@John_Norad: Actually, I was talking with a rep for Ubisoft once and asked him how to pronounce it correctly. He told me (it is You-bee-soft, by the way) and explained that it is, indeed, to mean Ubiquitous Software.

Therefore, it's not really a pun. It's not really funny either.

I didn't know what ubiquitous meant at the time, so for the rest of my trip, I just inserted it into random sentences as the adjective. Examples:

"I know you said you could run a mile in under 5 minutes, but don't you think that's a little ubiquitous?"

"I don't want to sound ubiquitous or anything, but I thought Small Wonder was a great show."

  • Mr. Mew

@illiniphase4: It sure is a huge risk, but if the gameplay is better, it's ok.

Hope they bundle it with the game.

  • bobtheduck

@DukeOfPwn: This... Red steel was weak, and the first thing I thought of with the motion plus is that a sequel that used it would be better.

@Mr. Mew: Nintendo doesn't even give you a whole controller with the Wii, only the wiimote half... I wouldn't expect anything, but I'd love to be pleasantly surprised.

  • linkthe2nd

@bobtheduck: What kind of Wii package have you been looking at? They give you a wiimote and a nunchuck.
