Resident Evil 1 Shambles Onto The PSN This Week

The first of Capcom’s motherload of PS1 re-releases for the PlayStation Network arrives later this week, with the debut of Resident Evil: Director’s Cut.

It’ll be part of the PlayStation Store’s regular weekly update on Thursday, May 28, and will cost $US10. Resident Evil: Director’s Cut, an extended version of the original, was first released in 1997. In addition to the main game, RE:DC randomises things like item placement and camera angles, as well as giving you some new character outfits.

    @MCWHAMMER:

    haha that just me lol

    $10 is expensive when you think there are new games such as Outrun Online Arcade, Zen Pinball, Flower etc which cost much less.

    Plus these days for an extra 10 bucks you could probably grab a copy of Resident Evil V. For less than 10 bucks you could buy an original copy of RE:DC too.

  • Bergerac

    @mbk337: Ew.

    The Crimson Heads were the better way forward for the series, instead of the Ganado/Majini crap.

    REmake is arguably the best RE game ever made, to anyone that doesn't instantly say 'RE2' because of, again, BS nostalgia.

  • ShinjiKinomoto

    You know, I kind of want to buy it for nostalgia, but I don't see myself playing through it any time soon. Maybe when I get into the "B-movie/game" mood I'll bite. I prefer this over the GCN one. I loved the original for the "brilliant" dialog and "earth shattering" acting. Really. Fucking hilarious! Original FTW!

    @Tychonius: Actually, I don't think there's a lot of reprogramming involved. Its mainly a disc image of the original game wrapped in some DRM and an installer.

  • Svend Joscelyne

    @dirtface: I see what you're saying, but if they added stuff they wouldn't be PS Classics would they? They'd be like the XBLA games. The whole point of bringing back games from past consoles is to have it in its unaltered, original form.

    Don't get me wrong, I agree with you, but if they did add stuff they couldn't sell it as a PS1 Classic. It'd have to be classified as a PSN title.

  • aiko.adonia

    @aiko.adonia: or maybe it was the gamecube version where they took it out.... i can't remember now

  • beetnek

    Considering that N64 games cost like, 10-12 dollars on the Wii Virtual-console, 10 dollars for this game isn't that big of a deal. This is especially considering FF7 will cost you 15 in Japan.

    I appreciate this option, since the original game is out of print, most game stores stopped carrying PSOne games, old and used. There is always the GC version, but I love playing the original source materials. I really appreciate the sense of history involved.

  • Svend Joscelyne

    @EvilMetsFan fon Fabre:Fuck the NA PSN Store!: You know Aeris' original name in Japanese was Aerith, right? So technically, they already changed it during the English translation back in 1997. Your head should have exploded off in rage long ago. :P

  • Squirminator2k

    @KylenX: Sony are still packaging and selling Chrono Cross under the PSone Greatest Hits label (I bought a copy three weeks ago with the updated ESRB rating and the SquareEnix logo on the cover), so I imagine it's only a matter of time before it htis the PSN Store.

    Squirminator2k

  • thecrisisfromthesky

    They really are taking AGES to release these games. It's not like they even have to do anything to get it to work on the PS3 and creating an eboot of it takes what, 5 minutes?

    I guess it might be all the red tape with getting it re-rated again but seriously, Japan has had this on their store for at least a year as well as Resi 2, 3 and now FFVII + Tactics. Lame.

  • EvilMetsFan fon Fabre:Fuck the N

    @feitclub: Well dear sir, thank you. I completely forgot and I own it. haha

  • Squirminator2k

    @ithyphallus: What RE4 made up for in terms of control and camera related frustration, it sacrificed in clever puzzles. RE, RE:DC and REmake all had some fantastic puzzles that put the game up there with Monkey Island and Simon the Sorcerer in terms of thinking. Most of the "puzzles" in RE4 could be solved by mashing randomly at the buttons until you got the desired result.

    Squirminator2k

  • EvilMetsFan fon Fabre:Fuck the N

    @dirtface:Well, I was trying to make the FFVII fans sound like the Patriots. So it only looks cool to me. Haha. @dirtface:

    Sony may not have, but Capcom HAS added to these games before.

    Resident Evil: DS was a 1:1 port of the original with some added features. Such as the ability to touch the naught bits of Chris and Jill on the screen to see some reactions.

    The touch puzzles were alright.

    I wasn't a fan of the random FPS 'Screen slashing' mode when you had to open the doors though.

    @anglon: Yes, as the PS3 and PSP share the same emulation of PSone games.

    It should be noted in the post that the game is only being released through the American PSN. Sven on the Capcom Unity forums said that due to rights issues, PSone Classics by Capcom are 'not eminent' in Europe for the moment.

  • shadow763

    @SocraticMethod: I would buy it just on principle alone. i missed the boat on this one so I would pick it up just for that reason alone.

  • feitclub

    I wonder if they've FINALLY restored the edited footage to the opening cinema? Back when Director's Cut hit the shelves, they advertised the inclusion of previously-edited graphic material but then failed to deliver said blood & guts. It was a pretty big mistake and they ended up offering rebates as compensation.

  • the7k

    @dirtface: The only thing I want them to change about the PS1 Classics is Online Multiplayer. KOF99, Street Fighter Alpha and Tekken 2 is good and all, but if we could have some make-shift Kaillera-style multiplayer, I would gladly buy them again. (Already have the physical copies.)

    Hell, if they could do this with any PS1 game, digital download or not, it would be the best thing sense sliced bread! Rival Schools, Darkstalkers 3 and Street Fighter Alpha 3 online would be a dream come true ... but I'm getting ahead of myself. Just make the current PS1 classics online-multiplayer capable, and you'll give XBLA a real good run for its money.

  • Stevil_T

    I remember just hating the DC version of RE. The switching of item locations would have been fun (a la RE3) if it wasn't for the fact it increased the game's backtracking. Their new locations didn't really make much sense in the context of the game world anyway.

    As much as I liked some of the new camera angles, some were made harder than they were because of them. Who thought up the stupid angles for the 3 crates & the vent puzzle?! GAH! I'm not even going to start on the costumes.

    Still, at least we had Zombie Forest giving us that extra scare.

    @L33Td00d:

    I notice Capcom always overcharge for everything. They are the new 'old' EA. EA has pretty much redeemed themselves in the console market in my eyes.

    -$23.95AUD a PSN games
    -Over $8AUD for 5 costumes
    -Charging for stuff that was already on the disc.

    I actually got into a verbal argument with the producer of the re-released Marvel Vs Capcom 2 on the PlayStation Blog for lying about the Bionic Commando (PSN) trophy patch. I told him I was going PSN share their games and SF4 costumes from my friend, which I did.

People who didn't really like the original game call it a faithful remake. people who played legend and loved it ahead of all the classic tr games thought it refreshed the series. • FrankieViturello

    @MDX: As I'm one of two who have responded in an air of disagreement with the original statement -

    The issue that I have has nothing to do with "strategy guides" but the comparison to the SCUMM games (Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Sam & Max, Simon the Sorcerer, etc.) due to the non-action bent of those games "PUZZLES" were nearly 100% of the content of those games, playing through nearly any SCUMM game is/was a non-stop puzzle-solving affair, from something as simple as figuring out the correct branching conversation to have with somebody or as complex as, deciding from close to TWENTY contextual options to do with an item (or items) to solve a puzzle.

    Sure, sometimes a Resident Evil puzzle was a tad frustrating, but ultimately they all boil down to using the correct type of crank shaft in the right hole, or using the "look" command in your item box to turn a book over to find the hidden key.

    When people describe the RE series they don't say "you know ... they're those puzzle solving games where you kill zombies." but when you ask about a SCUMM game you'll inevitably get the answer "they're those point and click games where you have to solve a bunch of puzzles ... not much (if any) action, it's just figuring stuff out.".

    I think that the lofty comparison of RE1 to the SCUMM series/genre is way off, and "strategy guides" have nothing to do with it.

  • FrankieViturello

    @thecrisisfromthesky: Well ... to be fair they DO have to play test them.

    PS2, PSP, and PS3 all have PS1 compatibility built in but some games do hit compatibility issues either immediately or at some mid-point. They have to devote a few weeks at least to putting a few play testers on these games and make sure that nothing causes a fatal crash in nearly ever scenario.

    FrankieViturello

  • FrankieViturello

    @Squirminator2k:

    You're joking right?

    Almost all the puzzles in RE are either item based key/lock puzzles or slide crap around on the floor puzzles.

    While RE4 doesn't have anything more complex than that none of the RE series puzzles come close to the thought that required for most of the SCUMM games. You're either remembering this scenario wrong or giving RE WAAAY too much credit.

    Wait didn't Japan get these on psn months ago and I thought they were graphically improved since they say HD on their Japanese site or I thought they did. Anyone know.

    @FrankieViturello: Water sample puzzle would like to have a word with you buddy. Thats the most glaring thing in my mind besides Nemesis about that game.

  • LllusionX: All his base are belo

    @Gundragon: Apparenty not enough, if you have to ask. :P

  • MadExponent

    FUCKING....FINALLY

    Way to go Sony, put good shit on PSone classics nearly three years into the consoles life.

    The games weren't licensed for the PS3 or PSP. It's up to the publisher if they want to release it on another platform in a specific territory. So when you see CAPCOM only releasing it in Japan then maybe it's because Japan is more important to them.

    @dirtface: I actually grew up on FFT and have played it more times than I remember, but I feel that the PSP port is by far the better product; I shall never play the PSX version again (although, RIP spell dialogue)

  • MontgomeryMarigold

    And they have updated the emulator for some titles. Anyone who's tried all their old PS1 games knows they don't all work flawlessly, but I've noticed after their firmware updates some of the titles will now work. So apparently those firmware updates aren't just for new features but includes them debugging the PS1 titles they want to put out. You'll never hear me complain about lots of firmware updates, it means they are fixing something or adding functionality for unreleased games!

    Bleh I remember buying this because capcom said it would have the unedited intro and other stuff cut out but it was idential to the original except it has some camera mix mode and dual shock support.

  • Gargus

    @elmorepow:

    Why would you post that here? It has absolutely nothing at all to do with this topic. Thats as stupid as going into a hospital and saying you want to buy a brass faucet for your bathroom.

    If you cant stay on topic, why bother posting?

  • Gargus

    @FarmboyinJapan:

    Because its fucking japan and its yen in japan, not dollars. What do you care the price is in another country?

    If you want it then buy it, if you dont then dont. Its that easy.

  • Alternate, I cho-cho-chose the i

    @Pronssi: Please share the image with us all so we may bask in the glory.

  • mangs

    @4nonymo: you could just get a psp. they work on that too.

  • mangs

    @ahmeng: but RE5 sucks. a ton worse than RE4 IMO.

  • mangs

    @libregkd: both are system-defining classics, so i think it makes total sense to charge more from a supply/demand perspective. we'd all prefer it at $6, but would you rather $10 or have it not come out?

  • Svend Joscelyne

    @Rory Michael O'Sullivan: In reality your opinions aren't fact. ;P

  • smackthenunisno1

    "this looks like chris' blood...." best line ever.

  • PlaidNinja

    Have they fixed the awful control scheme so that it can actually be playable this time?

  • FrankieViturello

    @EvilMetsFan fon Fabre:Fuck the NA PSN Store!:

    The water sample puzzle from RE3 is challenging, but it also has multiple solutions and can (if memory serves) be solved without even knowing the "trick" of how to align the colors. It's hard ... but not totally indicative of puzzles in the series.

    Don't get me wrong. There ARE puzzles in the RE series, some more complex than others, and I like the rest of the RE fans in the world had a lot of fun figuring them out between managing items and shooting slimy things ...

    ... but AGAIN, it's the comparison to the puzzles found in games like Simon the Sorcerer or Monkey Island that have me on the offensive.

    The Resident Evil games are NOT puzzle solving games at their core, they're action games, and what little puzzle solving they had could be boiled down to "fetch parts and figure out to combine them to do X".

    @thecrisisfromthesky: Exactly, it's all about the red tape. Look how much trouble it is to get GoldenEye on the Wii Virtual Console.

    also, i recently won re2 for the gamecube and played through it and it was just as fun as i remember it...still my favorite after all these years.
