Robots We Love: Mega-Man
He’s blue and sports an plasma-shooting arm cannon. He’s Mega-Man — aka “Rockman” in Japan.
Designed by Keiji Inafune, the character debuted in 1987 in truly horrible localised box art. The game was hard, the music was great, and the robot was and still is fantastic.

@FP_slomo788: i doubt a T-800 could take a charge blast from teh blue bomber.
I like Megaman X more than Megaman... is that OK?
SaanZ
@Ueziel: Secondly,
First of all. GENTLEMEN.
@Kaneda: Still regularly beat Megaman 2 w/ 3 lives or try to. Last time I did that it took a couple more play throughs just to get the muscle memory back.
Esper mind tricks
@Alex_Mexico: Yes. Yes there is :p. Posting in this thread because... well I kinda have to ^^^^
Megaman is awesome end of story. I still wish we had more traditional games than the battle networks, but alas.
@ssmoomix: Most of the 8-Bit ones resorted to false difficulty.
Fucking teleporting dragon.
BubbleF**kingBuddy
@Brian Ashcraft: Was about to say that myself..
@Booken: Robot-Appreciation week guys!! :D
@Atomsk88: Awesome, I never expected that, but I so love Daft Punk :)
Inzoum
@dirtface: That's not Mega Man, that's a Terminator!
Quick, where's the hydraulic press?!
@ranga55: Yes, I noticed it too. What's up with that Brian?
To get back to it if it happens, just search up 'Rockman' in the search bar.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Megaman 9?
Like, that was literally the entire story in a nutshell.
I like Megaman 6 more than Megaman 2.
Is there something wrong with me?
@dirtface: I lol'd at the face-poke. That is a very strange robot!
Just strap on an arm-cannon, give 'him' a blue finish..
Presto! Mega-Man!
@dirtface:
Give him a couple of years. The little guy will be running around murdering to inherit his victims' powers.
@Booken: Not random. It's Robot Week. Read the tags.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Sounds like Communist propaganda you're spreading there.
I hope you know that the T-800 could make aluminium foil out of your little blue... toy, Brian. ;)
@GKFinns: When I was 7 I played Megaman 2 a lot with a friend. I was decent at the game but my friend totally sucked. I remember laughing at him a lot for it. One day though he showed me his save game and I couldn't believe how far he was and how many items he had collected.
Long story short, the bastard had somehow found a pattern in the grids with numbers (that acted as passwords for save games) and had found the series of numbers that would lead him at the end with all items.
He might have sucked at the game, but he sure was better than me at math!
Kaneda
No. God no.
I don't know how anyone can like him, or Light, for that matter. It's implied over and over that many of the Robot Masters are simply fighting to prevent their own destruction and replacement by more "advanced" machines. Megaman cannot understand their plight. These robots are sentient, yet he only sees them as malfunctioning machines. He sees himself as just for killing an exploited worker!
Don't even get me started on Light. His actions led to the creation of Zero, the destruction of humanity, and for what? Because he didn't give Wily credit for his work? That fat bastard drove mankind off of a cliff because of his ego! And he's suppose to be a hero? Give me a Klondike break, that shit is vitamin bananas.

@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: My sister and I used to call P-Jack Plumber Jack because of his outfit. How saddened we were to find out it stood for Prototype.
@ssmoomix: I can beat Megaman X4 without using sub tanks! I can also beat many of its bosses perfectly. At least I could in the past... I'm not sure I still have the skills for hyperactive shit like that.
Kaneda
Okkusenmen! Okkusenman!
Megaman4. You get to charge your buster.
That was an important part of my life.
MonsterKingRen
You should do an article on Jack from the Tekken series.
God I love that brute.
That was totally random. There's no Megaman-related new, isn't it?
@ranga55: Is it me or did this just drop out of the front page? o.O
ranga55
A lot of people criticize the Mega Man series for all its sequels, but you know, none of Mega Man's sequels are bad. They're more like mission pack expansions, yeah, but the end result is a familiar and reliable series that you can always jump in to at any point for solid entertainment. Innovation is fantastic, but there's merit in sticking to doing what you do best, too. Mega Man is comfortable and reliable that way, and the world would be a worse place without him.

One of the best badge of honor I have as a gamer was beating the original NES Mega Man when I was six. Other games were brutal, but the original did not hold your hand at all. No energy tanks, no Rush, no save system...
Good times. Ever since that game I've been a lifelong Mega Man fan. I even bought Mega Man Soccer. Take that as you will.
Cool robot, imo
ranga55
Oh, the music. Snakeman and Flashman are still two of my favorite samples of game music.
I still feel like I was better at the games when I was 6 though :(
Megaman can really separate the boys from the men (and girls from the women) in terms of gaming. Megaman made you earn victory and for that i respect this series.
ssmoomix
@serotoninzero: Yeah I don't think he knows what game he's talking about...
Kaneda
@Xelioth: I beg your pardon? Getting an S rating in the Cyber Peacock level to get that last piece of gear for Zero (or was it X?)was pretty challenging.
Kaneda
@dafthero: You just opened my eyes to how much Daft Punk has sampled. I have to say I was pretty ignorant to it until now. But that's fine, because now I know of all of these awesome older songs.
Thanks!
@Atomsk88: HUMAN
@Xelioth: X4 was pretty hard. The final boss was a bastard.
@Alex_Mexico: I too like Megaman 6, I seem to be the only person who can't stand Megaman 2
Chris Valente
@Alex_Mexico:
I believe everyone has as a favorite the very first they played well. I could say that the least favorite of mine is 5, all of the others have something good, be it difficulty(1), overpower(2 - metal blade duh!)lenght (3), mega buster(4) and power megaman(6- don't tellme you don't enjoy shooting tru shields and being a pushover ;) )
there's not something wrong with you enjoying what you like, as long as you accept is your very personal opinion. Pretty much as everyone says that 2 is the best entry, I don't agree that much, but is at least THE megaman game you have to play as reference.
@MonsterKingRen:
Yes it was.
Although (and I'm sure you know)you could already charge Heatman's weapon in MM2, nothing beats the mega buster.
Something is wrong with me.
I never played a Megaman game before D:
@Andrefpvs: The ice-skating sliding....oh god the sliding. Yes, this game franchise separates the men from the boys.
Kalamaty
@Andrefpvs:
Oh, I must mention though that I love Mega Man 2. It has perhaps the best song in a video game ever:
It pisses me off when people go all like "OMG Mega Man 2 was the shitz0r, it had great musicz and was hard as hellllll!1!" and they don't acknowledge MM1 at all.
It had all of that as well.
@Xelioth:
Whatever that may be, since there are 6 possible first levels.
MegaMan <3~ (.exe is my favorite hehe~)
NekuSakuraba
@Ueziel: Fawk YES!. <3
NekuSakuraba
@dirtface: LOL at 1:26, evil glare.
When a real Megaman comes out, you know where to find me :3 <3
NekuSakuraba
@Kaneda: and yet that whole GAME isn't as hard as the first level of megaman 1 =P
@Alpha85: I agreed with that!!!
Mega Man rules!
Hayabusa_San
@Zorantor: Well, the main series of Mega Man (classic, X and Zero) have all the best Mega Man games ever created. The problem with the spin-off series is that they don't have the Mega Man feeling, thay just have the name and that's not enough.
I really like the main series and the Legends spin-off. You can call me a Mega Man Fan =D
Hayabusa_San
@SaanZ: It's okay to prefer X. If you prefer Battle Network, though...just be careful who you mention that around.
Zorantor
@Mastrix: Well, we did get a brand new entry in the main series for the current generation, so that's worth something.
I agree, though. The classic Mega Man and Mega Man X series don't have a single bad game between them. The Battle Network series is just completely disposable to me. Plenty of people seem to enjoy the MMBN series, so good on them, but I wants me some hardcore platforming.
Zorantor
@Zolbrod:
THIS! Hands down THIS!
There is NEVER an inappropriate time to worship the Man of Mega! Day, Night, Weekend, Weekdays, Solstice, Sabbath, Equinox, New Years Eve, Keiji Inafune's birthday, WHENEVER! It's always a good day to give mad props and respect to the little blue bomber that could!
And while some more content and feedback from Ashcraft would have been nice, frankly after reading through these comments, I don't think he NEEDED to! He could have just written "Mega Man", and nothing else, and we'd still cheer! Even at, like, three sentences from the guy, we've got videos, nostalgic memories of cracking the password systems and beating the original NES game (or its direct sequel) all from comments alone! It's lot a pot luck dinner where instead of food, you bring stuff about Mega Man.
This PROVES how highly regarded this super fighting robot is amongst us gamers. Whether you be young or old, this guy left a lasting impression that will NEVER leave us.
~Otaku-Man
OtakuMan24
@Zorantor:
Yeah, I won that.
@Kaneda: Mega Man X4 is my favorite Mega Man game out of them all, however, it is definitely the easiest (unless you are using Zero, in which case it becomes a little more challenging that some of the other X games. Still does not touch the originals)
I got that Rockman 20th Anniversary jacket and the artbook. Best purchases of 2008 :)
Overklocked
@dirtface: I hope the first real words that come out are "Kill Me"
@Zorantor:
"Mega Man X series don't have a single bad game between them."
Uh, I beg to differ.
Megaman X5, X6, X7 and X8 (especially the last two that were for the PS2) sucked BALLS!
Something that confuses me: if Megaman is a robot why isn´t he called Mega Robot? :P
lucasreis
I remember looking at the cartridge and thinking the game was retarded.
@LordThayer: I use both. That's why I mentioned the part in the Cyber Peacock level where they time you and rate you. When using X, there is no need to get S on all sections. You need to do it for Zero if you want all the upgrades though.
Also, isn't Zero what makes X4 good? I sure think it does.
Kaneda
@lucasreis: He's half and half.
RockyRan
@n00b_pwner: Go play them. Now.
Buy the carts, emulate, I don't care. No gamer can call himself a gamer without having at least played an NES MegaMan game.
RockyRan
@greyseal: Call me a freak, but I prefer MegaMan 5 over all of them.
RockyRan
@Alex_Mexico: I liked X5 well enough, but I never actually finished any of them after X3. Still, you can't say X isn't better than Battle Network.
Zorantor
@Ueziel: As far as the quality of the videos, maybe. As far as I'm concerned, there's no better game band than the Protomen.
Zorantor
@Zorantor: I would never say that. Any MMX is better than any Battle Network.
X5 probably wouldn't have ranked in my personal "crap Megaman" pile if it wasn't for the constant interruptions from your helper (forgot her name) in the middle of a level!
Love Mega Man music? Check out MEGA RAN CD. Hip-hop over Mega Man stage music. AWESOME AS HHHHEEEELLLLLLLLLL. www.cdbaby.com
damiz7o7
@dafthero: Yeah, I know, they sample a lot, but they do a good job mixing stuff and finding new ways of using existing sounds.

Slow news day?
@Ping5000 IS OUTRAGED BY BLIZZARD'S VOICE CAST:
instead of turning into others' likeliness he converts others to his own image?
Still better than a bomberman reference.

…this isn’t news.
They don’t make em like they used to… two levels of play, normal and difficult.
@Brian Ashcraft: As if arbitrarily declaring a week to be robot week isn't also 'totally random.'
This was disappointing. I clicked through with the hope that there would at least be an article about MegaMan, and at best a mention of an upcoming game. Instead there's just the same stretched out crappy flash photo from the frontpage, and a 3 completely disposable sentences. What's the point?
Hm that is an interesting conundrum. Would we say an plasma-shooting arm cannon? Is arm cannon a compound noun or is arm just an adjective describing the cannon. But then, we STILL wouldn't say "a arm cannon", but "an plasma-shooting cannon" doesn't sound right either. I would personally say a plasma-shooting arm cannon even if it defies the arm part of the equation. I guess it depends...
Krytha
@Esper mind tricks: I got pretty sick at 2 myself, but I just know that's all evaporated now.
@Zelgodes: Megaman 2 and 3 had amazing 8 bit music. Every time I hear 3's opening theme I smile.
mbk337
@SaanZ: If you like to constantly hold the charge button and are allergic to dogs I guess you could prefer Megaman X.
Kotakufan777
I just thought of something clever.
Mecca Man.
Eh? EHHH?
@MaxDragon7: I see it is fixed now, goodie.
Anyways, yes, he's my favorite of them all, well, except for the Metal Gears. I'd tie 'em up for first place.
@dirtface:that thing is scarier then Tom Hanks in Polar Express.
