Sacred 2 Looks Fine On The PlayStation 3

We’re a week away from the console release for Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, and Ascaron has released a lovely set of PlayStation 3 screens just in case anyone doubted that version existed.

Sacred 2 media has skewed heavily towards the Xbox 360 up until now, so it’s nice to see some images from the PlayStation 3 version. Not seeing a big difference between this and the 360, other than the fact that someone at Ascaron has been boning up on how to create compelling screenshots. Definitely looking good. Here’s hoping the delays that have plagued the console version were used to make sure the game plays as well as it looks.

    So which version looks better? The PS3 version or the Xbox 360 version? I want to know before I buy one. And so far, this game look like an awesome RPG with endless customizing and 4 player coop over Xbox LIVE? Looks like thats decided. By PS3 version.....

    @Archaotic: If youre anything like me you like to see those big numbers streaming off whatever youre hitting too. Sometimes d20 just wont cut it.

    @0xC001D00D:
    "Best storylines" is entirely up to the player's interpretation. I don't like "create your own character" RPGs. I find them wholly unengaging because the character never actually develops, grows, or matures. The only barometer for the player's progress is their level. I like dialogue, and I like the player character to be part of that dialogue, not just endless swathes of text responses to be chosen from.

    Also, If your game's battle system is based on or influenced by Dungeons and Dragons, I'm going to hate it. I vastly prefer menu based combat over dice rolls and area of effect spells.

    Clearly, we have different criteria for what makes an RPG good.

    @tk.:
    Yeah, I'm way too broke to worry about wasting money on new PC hardware right now. Consoles will be where it's at until I can find full-time employment, or until OLC monetizes.

  • dr1v3n

    I am SO ready for a game like this on the PS3. I am really really hoping it turns out as good as it looks in these screenies.

  • dr1v3n

    @TalahRama: NICEEEEE!!!!! Ohhh man im excited!@!!

  • tk.

    @Archaotic: On the bright side, now you can buy a terabyte drive for less than that... But yeah, I'm in the same boat, computing wise. Let's hope they get that mess straightened out.

  • 0xC001D00D

    @Archaotic: western rpgs have the best storyline! Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1 & 2 and so on....
    And they feature decent gameplay, and not random fight using repetitive battle systems D:

    @Dancing Ketchup, stepped in chicken:
    I would have liked to play the Witcher, as I had heard good things about the story as well. Sadly, the cancellation of the console version seems to have put the kibosh on that for the time being, as I'm a MacBook Pro owner whose 250GB external hard drive just went belly-up a month ago. Gotta LOVE when a $250 piece of hardware dies for NO reason whatsoever.

  • D-K, Came for the punch, stayed

    @Archaotic: I've heard good things on "The Witcher" in terms of storyline. It's been said it's multi-layered, well structured and consistant. Needless to say I was the one saying it, but i give credit where credit's due. The best thing to come out of Poland since cheap vodka and woman. Which are usually in a 2pack anyway.

  • DarthMetalHope

    Honestly I never knew about this game or series until bout a week or two ago when my brother showed it to me. And man once i saw it and looked up more bout it I knew that i needed to have it for PS3.

    Its just refreshing for me to finally have a game like this to play on my console since my laptop (even though its a pretty nice laptop) cant handle these games as well as i'd want it to

    So yea ive had this reserved and paid off at my work for the past week, i cant wait :)

  • D-K, Came for the punch, stayed

    @tk.: Technically, the true hack&slash genre is always dominated by Koei. Be it Samurau Warriors or Dynasty warriors, That is hack and slash. Baldurs Gate: DA2 i think qualifies as an action rpg, and yes, it was one of the better action rpg's. But many more action rpg's were awesome on PSII. Remember Rogue Galaxy...good god, best real-time combat mechanics ever!!! (Turn-based prize goes to Golden Sun)

    D-K, Came for the punch, stayed for the band-aid

  • tk.

    @jargy1: The last good console hack'n'slash that I can recall is Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance 2 for the PS2.

  • tk.

    @Powerslave: That probably explains the oft-mentioned "bugginess": it was probably DRM related issues.

  • jargy1

    This is actually very high on my want list. I've played the PC version but it runs like crap on my antiquated box. A true hack n slash in the vein of Diablo hasn't been done on consoles properly in a very long time (I'd dare say since Diablo on PS1) and I'm jonesing for it. It's a shame marketing hasn't been better for it. Sleeper hit I'm betting. I just hope they get it right and I don't have to wait for 15 patches to get it working.

    jargy1

  • Archaotic

    @Powerslave:
    That's always one plus for console games. No ass-backwards DRM "solutions" that make the games harder to play for legitimate customers without actually hindering piracy in any way.

  • BarbeQueQ

    @Lain01001: What are you talking about?

    BarbeQueQ

  • Powerslave

    @Archaotic: Reading the reviews on Amazon most people liked it for PC, but hated the DRM..
    I plan on getting this for PS3.

  • der13manner

    @ManiO: I plan to rent it as well, but with Gamefly so I can sit on it for a month if I want. Sacred was fun, just like Beyond Divinity and Titan's Quest. I won't pay 60$ for these games, but 20$ for the month it takes me to beat is fine.

    der13manner

  • Archaotic

    @ManiO:
    This generation, they're certainly not pushing any boundaries in storytelling. The last WRPG with a story I found even remotely engaging was KotOR (and, to a lesser extent, KotOR 2).

    Never was a fan of the old Baldur's Gate games. The dialogue was clever and well-written, but the combat was so terrible I could hardly play them for 10 minutes at a time. I'm just not a D&D fan, so any game that plays like it drives me up the wall.

  • ManiO

    @Archaotic:

    Are you seriously implying "western" RPG's lack stories? Have you played any of the games by Black Isle?

    ManiO

  • MCKWZ

    @Dr Durdon: Not split screen, but "shared screen". This type of games never have split screen, always shared. They just pan out the camera more.

    MCKWZ

  • Archaotic

    @fELIXADER:
    Yeah, a Western RPG, which means it'll distract me for about three days until something with an actual story comes out.

  • rapiiid

    @starwave: don't apologize, starwave.

    fantasy (n): imagination, esp. when extravagant and unrestrained. according to this definition, we should see a lot of different ideas, characters, animations come into play. i'm in line with your opinion. it's "fantasy" but they're all stuck in the same box.

  • fELIXADER

    @Archaotic: Renting it? You know what kind of game that is rigth?

  • D-K, Came for the punch, stayed

    Wow!! MGS4, eat your heart out!!

    D-K, Came for the punch, stayed for the band-aid

  • Dr Durdon

    @TalahRama: Does it have split screen co-op as well? I'm all about that.

  • MonkeyChunks

    If I have the option not to play as the game as that pole dancer then it should be good to go.

  • Dr Durdon

    @Archaotic: I'm in for one of these. I enjoyed the similar looting aspects of Too Human, though the deaths were a little too frequent. I guess I'm a sucker for shiny auras and flashy graphics :(

  • starwave

    @Chewbenator: haha yeah i guess thats what i was trying to say chew. i dont know,these character designs of late look all too similar. but to each its own. this game might be good so let me just shut up now. :P

  • Lain01001

    @starwave: That looks like WoW to you? What version of WoW have you been looking at?

  • Chewbenator

    @starwave: Oh you mean fantasy? It's this thing called a genre.

  • TalahRama

    @Fallible.:

    I'm not gonna apologize for being excited Fallible : )

  • Lekolo408

    damn right it looks nice....on the ps3 :(

  • TalahRama

    @Deathimself:

    It has drop in drop out 4 player co-op and you don't have to worry about the story cause it's a prequel to Sacred 1. Hope that helps. : )

  • Archaotic

    @okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under):
    71? That's not too bad. I had guessed it was going to skew a lot lower.

    @Jandlecack:
    Hm, maybe I'll rent it then. I'm still praying for a console port of Diablo 3 though.

  • Fallible.

    @TalahRama:

    This sponsored content was brought to you by TalahRama.

    Anyway, haven't played or heard of the game. I guess I'll wait for console reviews.

  • Violent St. Cannon

    @Jandlecack: Awesome. I've been looking forward to this until Diablo 3 comes out. I still have the Sacred Gold and Titan Quest to tear through for a bit of variety.

    What turned me off from the PC version was the install size. I wonder if that'll be a problem for 360.

    This games still looks like it was designed for a web-browser MMO. Lets hope the time they didn't put into presentation will be used to polish things for a smooth running game. I remember that this dev team is small and I'm understanding of that... it's just that the graphics really do burn my eyes :(

  • Deathimself

    Is this gonna have online co-op? i've been looking for a good rpg that i can plan with my friends... and do you have to have played the original to appreciate the story?

    Deathimself

  • starwave

    man the the hell is up with all these WOW looking character games? maybe its just me i guess. never heard of this game at all.

  • TalahRama

    Played and LOVED the first one. From what I've seen as far as PC reviews the main negative the game had was tons of bugs, but the console version (being released much later) will have way less issues in that department I'd imagine.

    I preordered this long ago and can't friggin' wait to play this next week on xbox live!

  • okenny :) ...building bridges (t

    @Archaotic: Metacritic puts it at 71 which isn't a bad aggregate at all :3

  • Ghostwise

    PC version was bugged to hell at release. Works flawlessy now though via patches. Fun game. Diablo on steroids in an open world. It's good.

    Ghostwise

  • Jandlecack

    @Archaotic: It wasn't panned by critics. It's a pretty decent game. Not stellar but by no means average. It's packed with content to say the least.

    Every piece of armor, weapon or item, no matter how small, is unique in the game. It's a pretty awesome concept. If you're into looting Diablo-style, this game is for you.

  • Archaotic

    Didn't the PC version of this game get roasted, reviews-wise? I don't seem to remember it performing too well. Anybody played it yet? How is it?

  • Archaotic

    @99-Luft-Balloons:
    None of those games had particularly captivating storytelling. Oblivion's narrative was painfully bog standard fantasy fare. Shivering Isles on the other hand was CONSIDERABLY more engaging because Sheogorath was such a well-written nutcase it was believable.

    Mass Effect? Eh, it's Star Trek. Nothing special.

    And GTA4? Really? Niko's characterization was some of the most inconsistent, wavering bullshit I've ever seen. He'd whine for 10 minutes straight about not wanting to kill anybody, but then someone could offer him two bucks and a hot dog and he'd shoot his own brother.

    KotOR is the top of the line for Western storytelling, without question. I also hear good things about Planescape Torment, but alas, the Baldur's Gate combat style is about as approachable to me as a hooker with a penis. No matter how pretty the face might be, I'm not touching it.

  • 99-Luft-Balloons

    @Archaotic: I disagree, while a majority of games don't put story on their priority list, there has been some games that have some of the best story lines in all of gaming:

    Oblivion, Mass Effect, GTA 4/L&D to name a few.

    99-Luft-Balloons

  • jedbeetle

    I hope it's good, oh I hope it's good!

    Looks like Andariel from Diablo II.

  • gblock

    Not touching this without a review, guys. Too dark a past to worth risking my finite playtime on - if you like it, I'll consider it, but if it sucks I don't want to go anywhere near it.

  • gotFrosty

    The question is which system do I get it for? Not too much news on the console versions has been released. (as far as I know) I've only seen screenshots.

  • Archaotic

    @Vecha:
    You play a captain of a ship who traipses around the universe, pisses off all sorts of aliens, and has sex with blue women.

    As far as I'm concerned, it's Star Trek without the license. It's definitely not a gold standard in terms of narrative writing like people are saying. Aside from Wrex, who I must admit is the man, none of the characters were relatable or even likeable (Ashley's racism was not charming, and I was GLAD to watch her die), the story itself was recycled sci-fi tropes out the wazoo, and it felt completely unfinished.

  • Vecha

    @Archaotic:

    Mass Effect?...Star Trek?...wow. Just Wow...

  • Zantagor

    @D-K, Came for the punch, stayed for the band-aid: I loved Return To Arm... kind of wish the PS3 Untold Legend was as good, but it took a major step backward from Champion of Norrath games

    Zantagor

  • Maltose

    @tk.: I suspect thye bugginess was exaggerated. The game's DRM would cause the game to malfunction if it detected that the game had been cracked. Most pirates probably didn't know this and went on the internets crying "Bugs!" when, in reality, it was actually a feature. Of course, the game did have "real" bugs, but I'm certain that the pirates' complaints hurt the game's reputation.

  • Vecha

    @Archaotic:

    yea...I'll agree with the sidequests being shitty...and the combat needed help...and maybe i haven't watched enough star trek...but i felt more engaged with this than any episode of star trek/star gate/etc..

    maybe you just dislike sci-fi/d&d? :/

  • Archaotic

    @Vecha:
    It's not a carbon copy, sure, but it had enough in common with Star Trek that it didn't engage me at all. Seriously, the dialogues with Wrex were the best part of the entire game.

    The combat and sidequests sure as shit didn't help it. =/

  • alexdiaz

    So is it the type of game where I would control the character or give it commands to perform an action?

  • Vecha

    @Archaotic:

    I still think you are grossly generalizing.

    Sure the writing isn't the best of the best...but it isn't a carbon copy of star trek either.

  • Vecha

    @Archaotic:

    Yea...I kinda wished Devs didn't use UE3...but that's a topic for another day.

    Hopefully the second will address those weaknesses because it has alot of potentital.

  • Archaotic

    @Vecha:
    I'm definitely not a huge sci-fi fan, and I don't like D&D either. That really didn't help Mass Effect. I was able to forgive it in KotOR because the combat was better and I like Star Wars, but Mass Effect had very little to redeem itself, especially when I was forced to redo the Benezia fight FOUR TIMES IN A ROW due to UE3 glitches causing me to get Force Pushed INTO A WALL. X_X

  • Vecha

    @okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under):

    A web Browser MMO? Like Runescape?

  • Vecha

    @alexdiaz:

    you control the character...like in diablo...

  • Lajcik

    @Archaotic: Do try planescape torment. While the game is based on d&d combat system, you can greatly decrease combat by playing a character with high intelligence. Also theres lots (i mean lots) of great story and dialogues that will keep you playing more and more. Its a totally different game from the baldurs gate series, its very complex and you cant beat it with just your fists :)

  • cluster1990

    @Jandlecack:

    you saying this made me smile like an emoticon.

  • Lekolo408
