Sega Vintage Collection 2 Brings GunStar Heroes To XBLA, PSN
Sega delivers the official details on the Sega Vintage Collection 2, which brings seven classic Sega games to Xbox Live Arcade and a great deal less to the PlayStation Network this summer.
In fact, the only game in Vintage Collection 2 coming to the PlayStation 3 is GunStar Heroes, which hardly qualifies it as a collection in the case of Sony’s console, but it doesn’t seem like PS3 owners will be missing much. As expected, the collection consists of GunStar, Altered Beast, Shinobi arcade, Comix Zone, Phantasy Star II, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, with Sonic & Knuckles coming later in the year.
The only difference between these releases and the versions of the games included in Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection is network play for Sonic, Altered Beast and GunStar and online leader boards, so unless you cannot live without those features you’re probably better off picking up the retail collection.

@awesomemonster: It at least contains Sonic 2 & Knuckles, since one of the pics has Knuckles in the Emerald Hill zone, so saying that S3&K will be included isn't that much of a stretch.
Abaddon
@Ero-Sennin: Now I assume by Phantasy Star V you mean a proper JRPG and not a crapy MMO Phantasy Star.
God I loved phantasy star IV (well I loved phantasy star 1 and 2 but not 3 too) For its time it had so many great moments, an amazing story, and it was a fanboys wet dream with so many nods to the previous phantasy games.
The only issue with Phntasy Star V is that Dark force is destroyed and presumably cannot be resurected as the profound darkness is also gone,
Maybe Re-Faze could become "angry" (god im a geek) Oh and bring back 3d dungeons
@Kobun: And I don't get this mentality:
"Blerg! Buy everything! Disregard quality and personal preference and buy everything! Blaagh!"
Honestly, wishing for games to appear on the console you already own (or have elected to purchase) is a perfectly valid desire. Buying every console on the market to snag a few exclusives? That's like killing a fly with a bazooka.
p.s. Most 360 RPGs suck...I think 360 fans are overcompensating. Any serious RPG fan is playing on handhelds these days.
@Nightshift Nurse: I don't get this mentality.
"Wah! I love XYZ! I want to play XYZ!"
"XYZ is available for Console 2000."
"Wah! I don't wanna Console 2000! Never never never!"
See also, JRPGs and PS3 owners.
@twinturbo2: It's better to get the Ultimate Genesis Collection at retail and buy Gunstar Heroes seperately, seeing as how all of the aforementioned titles are in the SUGC anyways.
@Thai Tea: Valkyria Chronicles & Yakuza 3 say hi.
Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles? I'm there!
@mellowspaz: That may be true...I'm not well versed in enough technical things to say one way or the other...so I'll just assume you're correct. But it also released during a period of time when Namco had all but abandoned development across Sony platforms...and I'm sure that back-door deals or semi-arbitrary decisions had at least a little to do with it.
Normally I'd wonder why something would like GunStar Heroes would come to the 360 and the PS3 but not the Wii, but in this case it's already there and has been for a long time.
@twinturbo2: Nope. And I aim to keep it that way.
fuck yes!
MDX
Aside from Gunstar Heroes with online play the rest shouldn't even phase a PS3 owner as we can already own all these games and more on the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for $29.99. Still odd Sega would just pull a stunt like this not make them equal but I can't really complain when they've given us exclusively Valkyria Chronicles and Yakuza 3.
Tiso Spencer
FUCK YEAH Thanks Sega! I fucking love Gunstar Heroes!
@Ted: yup. and thats because PSO is the best godamn online RPG ever made. that game laughs at warcraft from the grave.
@Pombar: yeah but like 70% of SEGA's games are complete trash nowadays. im not sure who's still left there from the halcyon days of SEGA past, but whoever is sure as hell doesn't know what people want to play.
the
@Nightshift Nurse:
It's not so much releasing dreamcast exclusives on XBLA, it's easier to port because they were using windows CE for the dreamcast. Just look at Soul Calibur for example.... Namco should have released it on PS3 as well but because of the coding, it was too much trouble.
mellowspaz
Hey Sega, how about a CRAZY TAXI god dammit. Release that dreamcast shit already, I could care less about these genesis games.
mellowspaz
aw, Gunstar shoulda been on the Sonic Collection disc. ah well, still a worthy purchase.
that said, im so debating Phantasy Star 2 for all the wrong reasons. it was my first real RPG, and if there's good achievements, im damn tempted to get it & grudge through that one just to see who else can...there's a certain level of difficulty old school RPGs could have where mere persistence might not be enough to finish them, and this is very much one of those.
Given the opportunity... no, I will not buy ANOTHER copy of any Sonic game. I'm pretty sure I have at least 3 forms of Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles, and only one actually lets me play Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
It isn't hard to program those, Sega. How about you unlock it for us PS3 and 360 owners, eh?
@jackal888: Horrible? NEVER. I have my alarm clock shout 'RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE' to get me up in the morning.
@Devil Azite plays too many JP VO players: Best. Griefing. Idea. Ever.
@Devil Azite plays too many JP VO players: Oh and check your messages! ^_-
Well, if nothing else, these releases are at least somewhat good due to the lock on ability of Sonic & Knuckles being included and functional. Though it's a bit costly once you add up the prices of all 4 of those games... but at least it's there! Knuckles in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Now, if only they'd add this feature to the Genesis Collection via an update patch or something...
@Devil Azite plays too many JP VO players: LOL so true!
Milk that cow Sega!
what i would like to see from sega is a remake of chu chu rocket as a downloadable with online multiplayer... im sure it would be a top seller for xbox arcade and psn network
KLEPTO671
@jikifreak: Altered Beast is a horrible game. You just remember it being good.Comix Zone and Gunstar are the best in this bunch.
@Alienation: Yes, because these files will be HUGE and the 16 CENTS PER GIG will kill Sega.
-_-
CreamSodaSlurpee
@KEN: It appears you get all those games in a packaged download, so you can't download them separately.
@Nightshift Nurse: No X360 in your house?
twinturbo2
@Lukehmuse: S3&K is very different than sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles. Try again.
awesomemonster
The Wii has had Gunstar Heroes for over a year. And you can get all these games and more by buying the Sonic Genesis collection for either platform. Lame. It takes alot to notice the pain of being forcefully raped in the gaming world by companies, but in this instance Sega is going to town on our collective asses after a major coke and meth binge.
Modus_Operandi
@Knoxximus (XBL/PSN): Yeah, I'll be enjoying watching my partner toss me all over the goddamn map.
@Thejamielynch: Same here.
Gray665
All i want is toe jam and earl on my xbox 360
is that so much to ask
Enough with the Genesis games; Sega needs to release Daytona USA and Sega Super GT.
Rambozo
GUARDIAN HEROES!!!!!!!!
hyourinnmaru
Fucking Sega. Not so much for this specifically (though this and Virtual On are pretty compelling evidence), but for the fact that all signs pretty much point to them making their Dreamcast catalog available exclusively on XBLA.
At least Capcom and Namco have realized there are ways to make it in the West apart from crawling up Microsoft's ass. (Sticking to what they've always done instead of pursuing some myth of the "Western Gamer" is a good one.)
I still have the little walkthrough book that came with PSII, so I'm set for whenever I play it again (some of those dungeon maps are brutal). The stretched widescreen pics are gross... is there a setting for 4:3/stretched in the options in UGC?
@awesomemonster: I hope that if we buy both S3 and S&K it unlocks a combination. I doubt sega with put in the effort.
Verge
@Gray665:
I've still got my genesis cart too, was rather unhappy to hear they put it up on the Wii and no XBLA, an injustice has be righted.
SteamPunkJin
I think you guys should mention this comes with Sonic 2& Knuckles, and also Sonic 3 & Knuckles, as S&K will 'lock on' to the S2 and S3 games on the Xbox Live Arcade.
Lukehmuse
I'll take Shinobi Arcade (unless that's on the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection disc), Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Gunstar Heroes.
Now, where is Daytona USA 2?
twinturbo2
@awesomemonster: Ummmm... this includes S3&K.
Lukehmuse
@Knoxximus (XBL/PSN): sounds pretty freakin awesome to me too.. loved that game when I was a kid.
mat1cs: I'll make you travel-sized.
@Alienation:
my bad. you're right. just googled it; Sony charges publishers for free AND paid PSN content.
@[ZTF]214A, 2A, 5A, 5B, 5C, 5D, 214B, 214D: OMG. Blazblue avatar FTW. Can't wait...
Fun GunStar Heroes. Comix Zone is the best game in that collection.
Act like you know.
@Alienation:
i thought PSN charges only applied to demos? i could be wrong though.
@Sir_Pennyworth: Yeah, Sega published most of Treasure's Genesis titles, and they still hold the publishing rights.
Treasure's a small company, so this is good for both companies to make revenue on.
ShingoEX
Gunstar Heroes is one of my favorite games of all time, I've been waiting for this announcement. I still have the original genesis version, the good one not the redone one with the crappy "realistic" artwork.
Gray665
@[www.racketboy.com] have fun
awesomemonster
@Intellectualdiot: Ehh, Comix Zone is also found on the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection CD as well so its not that bad.
kreepmode
All I needed was GunStar heroes. Thanks Sega!
kreepmode
It's clear to me now that Sega doesn't know what the hell they're doing.
AlucardsQuest
@Zonic505: Can these games be downloaded separately because it isn't a collection if only has Gunstar Heroes. Plus I have The Genesis Collection, so That's the only game I want.
@Ero-Sennin: fuck, that went to the wrong comment, but I'd be in line... also if they could throw in a new vectorman... I'd be game.
awesomemonster
@Ero-Sennin: I could use some Sonic the Fighters 2 myself.
Alienation
@Dead Giveaway: No online and crappy Achievements was the reason why i didn't purchase Sonic's genesis collection.
Rompehamster
@Ted: I would just sorta, probably, I dunno, help science instead, but whatever floats your boat. :P
Those are crappy sega collection that I would have passed anyway. And here's soemthing too....I'm beginning to HATE sega. They never put out any good games for the ps3 and the ONLY game I ejoy from SEGA is VF series on the PS3. As of this writing...I no longer cared what Sega has to say or put out, the only team worthy is AM2...and hell if we know they even exist anymore at Sega.
Thai Tea
@Zonic505: Well, you can, with custom firmware...
I'll probably still buy it on XBLA, though, unless it's 800 MSP. If that's the case, Sega can go screw themselves - £6.80 for a 16-year-old Mega Drive game? Puuuulease.
@PSOCecil: Gunstar Heroes is hands down my favorite game of all time, but I won't be purchasing things just because of how terrible a developer Backbone is. I actually debated on picking up Space Invaders due to Backbone's interference but decided that Taito and Minter were worth it (plus it's an excellent game). I'll stick the the Treasure Box.
@Ero-Sennin: People said the same thing about how much they should make NiGHTS 2. Look how that turned out.
Can't freakin wait! This brings back a ton of great memories!
I'm sorry, but something doesn't follow here. It's mentioned that the PS3 version is only Gunstar Heroes, a brilliant game for sure. However while Comix Zone is also listed amongst the titles to accompany the X360 release, you claim that it doesn't seem like PS3 owners will be missing anything meaningful. You silly man.
I think you owe CZ a great, big apology, Mike :) And Sega owes PS3 owners one as well.
@Ero-Sennin: If I won those crazy 100 million lottos, I'd focus my money on remaking PSO(BB). Tne interest from the millions alone could probably support servers.
@MyBigToe: but... it sucks
awesomemonster
@Curse_Lily: "when it is release" Sorry a little to much rage because of this damn humidity.
Why will they never upload sonic 3 and knuckles? Is it really that hard to make that rom? Sonic 3 is just an unfinished game without the sonic and knuckles cartridge.
awesomemonster
I love Gunstar and i am going to buy it when it is lease but DAMN IT SEGA WHAT I WANT IS VIRTUAL-ON IN THE GOD DAMN PS3.
SPECIAL ATTACKS:
LOVE LOVE DANCING
[ZTF]214A, 2A, 5A, 5B, 5C, 5D, 214B, 214D
I'll definately be picking up Gunstar Heroes, seeing as how it's not on the Genesis Collection.
Also, everyone who's raving for online play.. do keep in mind, Backbone's network code for these Genesis roms is TERRIBLE, and at least in Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2, it was nearly unplayable due to lag. and I have a reasonably good connection.
Aw man. I absolutely need these six games. Guess I better go pick up a 360.
PlatformJunkie
@Sir_Pennyworth: I think the reason for the lockout is the high PSN charge. Too lazy to link the article. There may be other reasons, but still, it is kinda sad to see PS3 get the shaft.
Alienation
Can they please release Revenge of Shinobi???
Altered Beast multi player. Sold.
Gun Star is on my PSP so I dont need it :)
jikifreak
@Sir_Pennyworth:
"Also.... any reason for the PS3 lockout?"
a trend of the generation is my guess.
I will get Gunstar, Sonic & Comix Zone, no problem.
Online play & a few achievements is cool with me.
Comix Zone I have on the Wii already, but playing it on the 360 is cool with me as well.
I think they already have most of these games on the recently release Sega Collection.
D0RC
Sega really needs to make a Phantasy Star V. People have no idea that for awhile there, Phantasy Star was the best JRPG series on the market. There are still things about PS that RPGs havent even come close to matching yet.
God, if I win the lottery, I'm going to buy SEGA. Re-release the dreamcast for $59.99, get my dev teams to make
Phantasy Star V
Streets of Rage 4
ShenMue 3
....yeah.
@Nobuyuki: Sonic 3 has a racing multiplayer game
MyBigToe
Gunstar Heroes is awesome. Glad to hear it's coming and the rumor was true.
I couldn't really care less about all of the others, though, since my roommate has Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. I can just play them all on that if I REALLY feel the need to.
Online Gunstar!?!
SOLD!
How do you work online into Sonic? Does some poor guy have to be stuck as Tails?
Nobuyuki
Wasn't Gunstar Heroes done by Treasure? Does SEGA own the publishing rights or something?
Also... any reason for the PS3 lockout?
Sir_Pennyworth
If I can put Gunstar Heroes on my PSP, then that'd be awesome. Even though I bought it from Virtual Console on my Wii.
@Faselei: one can only hope...
@kreepmode: Seriously. Iwonder if we can buy them separately. I don't need the whole collection.
bangbangblah
@Nightshift Nurse: Fanboys miss out. That is all.
twinturbo2
@Lukehmuse: ... but you need to buy those games separately for the lock-on to work.
twinturbo2
@JB4GDI: Until he respawns and takes half your health, right?
Firefly
@Ero-Sennin:
...Seriously? Can this be true?
Coming on the heels of the Duke Nukem news though, I am no longer as optimistic...
Faselei
@awesomemonster:
The pic does belong, as S&K does offer the lock-on feature unlike in the "Ultimate" genesis collection.

Sappharad
I'll be buying Gunstar Heroes just for the fact I can play it online. I love that game, but it is even more full of win when you play it with someone else...
@Zonic505: Yep, the Wii got the jump on the two big boys on this one. I have it on there as well.
The rest of the titles I have on previous collections discs since sega releases them on a yearly basis it seems.
@Abaddon: I'm thinking that pick doesn't belong, seeing as sonic 2 is not listed anywhere.
awesomemonster
@someone_else: check this out.
from thenext-level.com interview with reiko kodama back in 04.
GotNext: The core Phantasy Star series officially came to an end with the fourth game, although Phantasy Star Online continues in a sort of separate continuity. Have you ever considered going back and revisiting the original series with new games?
Kodama: Yes, I have. After 4, the team had thoughts about a fifth installment. In fact, the team still talks about it. The characters and setting are very near and dear to my heart, so I think it would be wonderful to do.
OMG! I love Gunstar Heroes! I used to play that when I was a kid! I'm definitely buying this!
Malec Algazali
@someone_else: yeah im talking about a "traditional" styled rpg. psu made me never want to play another online phantasy star again. sega really dropped the ball on that one.
and yeah, the darkforce thing could be a problem but as long as it has continuity with the other games, ill be happy. in fact, i think this would be the perfect chance for III to get a little more love by having parts of its storyline be the main influence over V, kind like how II was to IV.
i can picture this game in my head, with your 3D dungeons and very faithful reiko kodama style artwork (if not done by her) and let me tell you....IT'S AMAZING.
Damn I want a remake of gunstar heroes in vivid colors with hi-def sharp visuals. Oh well.
@PlatformJunkie: Or, you know, a Genesis.
Note: I realize Altered Beast and Shinobi are the arcade versions, but the console versions worked fine for me.
starman jr
@jackal888: Negative. I can play it on an emulator and its still fun, arcade one (which from the looks of those pics, thats what is in this) shits all over the Sega one though, but they are still good.
Rajolae
@Thejamielynch: ToeJam & Earl 3 is playable via backwards compatibility if that's any consolation. It's pretty well done though I don't like the hub world, the present implementation, or the antagonist.
@Nightshift Nurse: Yet if games are the measure of a console's worth, why bother buying a console which doesn't have the software you want?
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with wishing for games to appear on your currently owned console, but being stubborn to the point of absolute refusal to acquire the device which delivers the content you want seems fairly backwards to me.
@Sir_Pennyworth: Didn't Sony say they didn't want to many retro rehash on PSN? They focus more on art-deco style games perhaps? I honestly though when they killed BC that they would offer a ton of games from PS1 and PS2 on PSN but they haven't went for that either. Maybe they really mean to stick to the less is more approach.
@Rambozo: yes. yes, they certainly do.
@+ Watch video
"...Rise from your grave". Oh man! Gotta love that Genesis sound chip >_>
@Intellectualdiot: Dude! Come on! PSN should nurture high-quality releases like PixelJunk, Flower, Lingering Shadows, Tranny, etc... These games would only clutter up and reduce the visibility of quality games. PS3 owners should thank Sega for not releasing this vomit on PSN. Remember they only release Yakuza for the PS3... they remember PSN and PS3 when it's time for quality!
*checks Slickdeals.com for LIVE point card sales*
@Thai Tea: But shouldn't you thank Sega for not putting shit out for the PS3. It seems like they only put quality on the PS3 as you attest to their release of VF. They're looking out for you man and that's not something to hate them for man <3
@AlucardsQuest: They're like the Konami of DLC :|
It seems really strange that they'd launch just on the 360 platform. It really seems like they're leaving money on the table unless this is part of Sony's vision of only wanting "interesting" games on PSN. If so then I guess that anything retro is uninteresting perhaps? Don't know...
@MiltonZep: ... but does Ultimate Genesis Collection have the lock-on games for Sonic & Knuckles?
I think the Sonic Mega Collection Plus disc does, though.
twinturbo2
@Archaotic: seriously. i have all of these games on cartridge anyways- but the fact that gunstar will be coming to PSN with online multiplayer is freaking amazing.- hopefully PSN users will get a little break in the price ;)
Gunstar on PS3... sold. Would've liked Comix Zone too, but GSH is good enough.
king rex
So wait wait wait... This is STILL Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles stand alone? Not combined? Complete and utter BS. I already own the Genesis collection and it was already a travesty that S3&K wasn't included in that. Now they're pulling this crap again? Both games by themselves are hardly worth owning. It's only when they combine that they outshine all other Sonic titles. It's takes seconds to combine two files to get this thing to work on a PC. There's no way in hell Backbone would require an extreme amount of effort to combine the two.
Backbone and Sega need to BS less and provide more if they want me to spend my money.
@Ero-Sennin: Personally, I'd really like to see a Shining Force on one of these collections.
bangbangblah
@Kobun: If the content one wants is minimal at best, then how is that backwards? It's not like I went out of my way to pick the game system that had the absolute least amount of currently available and upcoming releases that interested me. (If that were the case then I would own a 360.) The problem is assuming that anyone who complains about missing out on the odd game here or there has either a) chosen the wrong system or b) predicated their entire gaming existence on exclusive X, Y, or Z.
And to clarify, it's not like I'm not well aware that by electing to not buy a particular system that I'll inevitably miss out on at least a few titles that I'd very much like to play. On the other hand, it doesn't make the prospect of missing certain games seem any less frustrating...especially when the reasoning behind their absence on another console seems arbitrary at best.
@twinturbo2: And a sheep and its money are soon parted. Drop the fanboy crap. Jesus, it's no wonder people don't think very highly of gamers...most of us seem to operate under the moronic assumption that happily swallowing everything that's pushed in front of us is preferable to making informed personal choices.
And to be perfectly frank, it's been my experience that the gamers who do own everything also tend to be the most miserable bastards in the room. Hell, just look at some of the personalities that flaunt their collection around here for proof.
@AlucardsQuest: Did everyone forget how awesome Gunstar Heroes is, or something? Did I walk into a bizarre alternative universe where great games became crap? I wonder sometimes. :P
Svend Joscelyne
@Svend Joscelyne: *moment I laughed you off. Although I could have stopped to laugh you off too. ;)
Svend Joscelyne
@Thai Tea: The moment you negated The Club, Yakuza Kenzan and Yakuza 3 was the moment I stopped laughed you off.
But the moment you negated Valkyria Chronicles was the moment you lost all credibility as a gamer. Good day.
Svend Joscelyne
@Intellectualdiot: Comix Zone is one of the greatest Mega Drive games ever.........
..... But it's already out on the PS3 (via SMDUC).
@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): I would actually kill for a few more retro remakes, but of course I wouldn't want it to be suffocated like the XBLA. I'd love some Ikaruga or Virtual On for the PS3 (I have Rez on 360, but I'd happily buy it twice over on PS3 as well), but I guess if Sony allow those then that will allow the floodgates of crap to open.
Svend Joscelyne
@awesomemonster: Sonic 2 is already out on XBLA. Sonic & Knuckles' compatability would be retro-active, just like the cartridges of old.
Svend Joscelyne
@jackal888: I think the crouching kick to the sky alone negates that judgement.
Svend Joscelyne
@Ero-Sennin: Freaking seconded, so much so that I'm investigating how to set myself up to play PSO1&2 on my Gamecube right now.
Svend Joscelyne
@Pombar: That was more due to crappy senior management rather than development. Apparently NiGHTS 2 was destined for 360/PS3 before it was suddenly determined that it should go on the Wii by higher forces.
SEGA's dev teams are pretty solid - it's just that there's too much crappy Japanese beurocracy surrounding their projects that they all end up rushed to release or otherwise shat upon from a great height. Sega Superstars Tennis could have been twice/three times the game it was if Sega's upper management really bothered clearing some of the characters.
/is still bitter I didn't get to play SST as Billy Hatcher.
Svend Joscelyne
@Zonic505: If this collection works anything like the last batch of Vintage games released for XBLA, they will be released separately.
Svend Joscelyne
@atrimus: I really think it's more down to the fact that all of these other games can be picked up on Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection, negating the point of wasting space/bandwidth putting individual games on the PSN.
Which is absolutely fine by me, as I already have Ultimate Collection (which is the nuts). Only thing I'd be missing is online play on Sonic (although I doubt that many people will want to play online) and the Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles lock-on.
But then again I still have my old Mega Drive/Sonic Mega Collection anyway so. :P
Svend Joscelyne
Can we get Alisia Dragoon, please?
@twinturbo2: Well yeah of course.
Lukehmuse
Finally, the classic arcade Shinobi will (legitimately) come home. I spent more money on that game than I care to admit when I was a teenager.
Qui-GonJim
@starman jr: I hope you realize that was a joke.
PlatformJunkie
@CreamSodaSlurpee: $160,000 per gig you mean. I think it was 16 cents a byte.
NoHoldsBarred
Altered Beast?
*RETCH*
And why does Sega always choose Phantasy Star II over Phantasy Star IV?
@NoHoldsBarred: No, a gig.
Svend Joscelyne
