Some Wet, Well-Lit CryEngine 3 Demo Footage
Crysis and Far Cry developers Crytek don’t just make games. They make game engines. And their latest engine is the CryEngine 3, which struts its stuff in the above video.

@curly haired boy: Basically, that distortion effect only occurs in real life when looking through the water's surface (you're above water looking at something underwater, or vice versa). If you're underwater looking at something else underwater, there should be no distortion.
Light shining from above the surface, such as sunlight, would result in surface refraction only in the light patterns. And underwater plants would obviously sway around in the current. But objects like rocks and sand and other characters wouldn't wiggle around if they and the viewer are underwater, because there's no surface between them to provide surface distortion.
Just go to the pool this summer, dunk your head underwater, and look at everybody's legs. You'll see what I mean.

So this is the engine that will be able to run on current gen consoles, obviously it won't look this good but if even the water could look half as good as that, we will get some amazing looking games in the next 10 years.
Besides im sick of seeing Unreal Engine 3 in every game that I play and just the way you can always notice that it's that engine that it's running on.
Bring on Cryengine 3.
@HELLSRIDER is playing Mother 3: It's for the PC as well.
@ToastyUterus:
When did the xbox or PS3 start supporting dx10?
I really am curious, because last time I heard they said it wasn't possible for either.
hippo24
@Narishma: But better looking than most things.
@mysonsnameisnova: It moves slowly but I dont think its thick.
@deanbmmv: Thanks for the link, ouldnt make any judgements with this video either, and yes Im a console gamer.
@mphz: But its for consoles...
@GriefTroll: I second that.
Shouldn't the moon move basically as fast as the sun?
Brodka
@Cue2: cry engine 3 was made to be compatible on a console,
dx 10 software on the pc is easier to program games with apparently, thats what they said about stormrise, which is why they are making it to be the first dx10 required game on the pc, because they said programming for the xbox and ps3 using dx10 was easier than dx9.
but ce3 is majority on hand for multiple platforms, which takes away a bit from what they COUDL do if they wanted to do a great leap in pc technology.
as someone said, the visuals and effect can be there, just not as efficiently as on a dx10 pc, therefore, not as good on performance
@Paradox me: It was also such a tiny res so you can't pick out the details like you would at 1920x1200 or whatever you use.

man, this is such a step-back from cryengine 2...just look at how bad those mountains look. really disappointing.
Kougeru Matsuoka
@Apreche: Guess that's what gave me the "I've seen this before" feeling. But you know, thats not much of a leap from crysis-level anyhow.
I however am wondering: Is it optimized this time around?
@Imin2Nuggets: Yes and no. It is apparently going to be even more future proofed, and much better optimized.
We can only hope that our leg isn't being pulled on those regards.

@Dude From Dubai:

Theres some good PhysX stuff. It flow's right, but look's like fake water. Whereas CryEngine makes water look pretty good, but it doesn't flow right....now if only we could get them together.
@beril:
Far Cry was Cryengine 1, Crysis was CryEngine 2, and Far Cry 2 was Ubisoft's Dunia engine (which was on par/slightly better than CryEngine in some scenario's, ie fire) Cryenginge one get's a bit of Console use, mainly Far-Cry spin-off's on Wii n 360.
If this run's on Console, then expect it to be rubbing shoulder's with Unreal. It's got a huge following as 'the best of the best' in game engines, it's the game engine to aspire too be. Otherwise we'd have "But can it run Unreal".
@Imin2Nuggets: Not weaker... more scalable.
@★☆★ Waka ★☆★:
They might be console gamer's, going above 720p is a rarity for them, so of course it will look good. :P
[www.gametrailers.com] - here's a 'HD' one. I still wanna see it run 1600*1200 flawlessly on £1000 system, then they get a big prize. Cos not much point updating the engine if guys are only just getting PC's that can run Crysis looking beautiful. As it's scalable to Console's heres hoping it'll run on low-end enthusiast rig's
Just when you want to say, "I don't know how they can really improve upon what we already have", they come with this
They are gonna make one of these engines for the consoles, right?
Soon, right?
@★☆★ Waka ★☆★: +1

Underwateris WOOOWWW! I want a diving simulation game made with CRYENGINE 3! :P

Outstanding all around, but the water in the stream looks, I don't know, thick? Like it has some sort of gel in it or something.
@avprox777:
i still see little to no difference between ce 2 an ce 3
lbmanuel1
@wtf_G: CE3 is just a weaker CE2 for consoles.
@0xC001D00D: I'm not sure if this is on a console it may be on a PC. Do you have a source for that info? Cryengine 3 also has PC improvements too so this may be showcasing the PC stuff the quality was on par with PC so I'm not entirely sure on this one.
Cue2
Is this really new footage? Because I remember downloading this video back in 2006-2007 before Crysis was released.
I remember it specifically, because in those times Crytek would always talk about how a 78/7900GTX can run the game at High Settings and everyone was totally falling for it.
ps: im not talking smack, I own Crysis and Warhead and merely explaining the vibe back then.
doesntlikedede
@mphz: I'll be gaming out of my flying car by then.
Dancing Ketchup, stepped in chicken
@★☆★ Waka ★☆★: yea, it kind of misses the point when it's not in hd.
@Lnin0: amen to that.
that's one thing I liked about killzone2. they did a good job of making you feel like your controller was controlling a person and not a camera. on the other hand, lots of people hated that and it was a little weird that the camera level was set at like mid torso height.
@Dude From Dubai:
cryostasis does that
[www.cryostasis-game.com]
i've only seen tech demos of it, but i hear the sys reqs are pretty damn high.
diagorus
@beril: well, when you are trying to get as many people as possible to not only play, but be able to play, your games, using an engine that can scale and still keep a consistently high fps is probably a better choice than cryengine2 which struggles to attain anywhere near 60fps on any hardware
B-ryon
@beril: If this is console ready, I would expect this engine get more adoption.
The Crysis engine turned a lot of people away due to the extreme system requirements (which still holds true today).
If this engine can bring mainstream PC's into playability, then there should be more developers hopping on board.

Uh, when are videogames going to ditch that stupid underwater effect? The one that looks like you would be looking through distorting water surface. They create one of the most advanced realtime 3D footage and hang on some Quake era visual solution for communicating of being under water. WTF?
It's going to be nice when games like this are beamed to your TV like cable and played through a network artificial intelligence sentient deity hub. My laptop runs Knights of the Old Republic okay-esque.
postretro
@Gen-an:
Maybe not. It depends how much optimization comes along with the new engine. I'm hoping that since it's consoles and PC this time around they've managed to make use of available power better.
A 296, SLI 285/275/260s or Xfire'd 4890's should be fine. Hell, my single 285 gets a steady 30+ FPS on Enthusiast with 8xAA in Warhead at 1920x1080.
Paradox me
@Apreche: I agree. I can see why they show the jungle stuff so much...with the water and trees showing off a lot of impressive rendering features. At the same time, though, I do think people are going to start having a "seen that" attitude after a bit.
@Luke Plunkett:
Luke, is this the one you're referring to?
+ Watch video
(video code is u85sf_ARiW0 if anyone wants HD and it doesn't put up a link). I thought it looked pretty good in a city environment. I kind of wish they'd show off that castle level we got a glipse of at one point :)
kobeashi
@0xC001D00D: true but your talking the difference in the instructions used. They could certainly make it run on the consoles they just have to make multiple passes for a single operation which would only take one pass on a dx10 pc. So in reality the quality can be there just not the performance.
lilaliendog
@Dude From Dubai: That sort of thing can almost be done to a degree. It doesn't look all that great though, it's definitely not good enough to implement yet.
So far the closest is in Cryostasis (not made by Crytek), it looks like jelly instead of water and doesn't flow all that naturally but it's cool anyway.
To make it look realistic just takes far too much processing power, it's incredibly complex.
Winterbringer
Now someone make an MMO with this engine and Mount & Blade style combat. No magic.

@avprox777:
It looks very beautiful but does any developer use CryTech other than themselves? Can we even run these ; ;
@undefined: Aren't they planning to make console versions of CRYSIS? I'm very interested to see how far they can go with that.
@SupaPhly: CryMeariver.

Im still waiting for a game with good water physics. Like, if you carve a valley in an map editor, and pour water down it, i woulld love to see the water cascade down it, paicking up and depositing debris.
@0xC001D00D: truth
For an engine that's getting so much hype you'd expect to see more games use it. Has there really any big games other than Far Cry and Crysis that's used their engines? All I see in games are UE3 and Renderware
beril
Its time to buy a new graphics card... lol.
It's really hard to tell how well it looks with such a low quality video, I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about "it looks much better" or "it's not such a big step"
I sincerely don't think the video has enough quality to make any judgement of that kind.
I should have a computer capable of running games powered by this by the time Duke Nukem Forever comes out.
Foliage looks much better IMO. Even with 16xAA/AF in Warhead I was always disappointed with how synthetic the leaves and what not looked.
In this video everything looks so lush. Granted, it is a demo, but still.
Paradox me
what would their next game be called? CRYME? :P
@wtf_G: It's not a big leap over because it runs on ps3 and xbox 360, it's like only a crossplatform version of the previous one, so on the graphical standpoint it's even a bit backward as it can't use DirectX 10 on consoles
Yes, it does look very, very nice. Though I'm not seeing a very drastic change from what I've seen in Crysis.
Looks great. Can't wait for the rest of the tech to catch up with graphics so it actually feels like I'm walking through a rocky stream and not just gliding a bobbing, gun camera around.
Lnin0
@Apreche: There was a ton of urban stuff in the last CryEngine 3 video.
Fancy Dancy, Nancy.
Always jungles. I'd like to see them do something different. Like how about some cities?
Not a big leap over Cry2, but still remarkable. The water is a slight step up anyhow.
wtf_G
wow...... this is just... wow
It's.......beautiful. ;_;
avprox777
@ara: Are you saying that the effect on the waters surface when looking up from underwater shouldn't be there? Have you ever been underwater and looked up at the waters surface?
-MasterDex-
@deanbmmv: Crysis is far from unplayable on todays high-end.
My rig is tipping the line between medium and lowend now and I can run Crysis great at high settings getting an average of 40-50FPS and dropping to 30-40FPS with 2xAA (which isn't really needed in Crysis).
Now considering that many 360 and PS3 games struggle to even hit more than 50FPS, I'd say Crysis is already very scalable.
CryEngine3 is a more scalable, better optimized edition of the CryEngine2 that will be able to run on consoles as well as scale right up to the PC lovelyness. It's really more like CryEngine2.2 though with the engine used in Warhead being CryEngine2.1. Warhead was a vast improvement over the first edition so my guess is that Crytek will have done another stellar job on this engine.
-MasterDex-
The rocks look a little more real, but other than that it looks just like CE2. And the rocks might not even look more real for any other reason than a more natural arrangement.
@TOCATL: You should change your name to ILOVECOMMAS
or NEVERENDINGSENTENCE
@lbmanuel1: Probably because they are basically the same engine except CE3 has been toned down to be able to run on consoles.
@Tracid: Sure, there's a good number of companies using CryTech, check out the CryEngine website, I'm sure I remember them having a list of products using the engine.
-MasterDex-
@postretro:
So you hinting at OnLive?
@robinthakur:
Oop's on the wrong res. caught a bit of heat, not my best today.
But yes, he fact Crysis is still unplayable on today's high-end, never mind 2 year's ago, is silly, and I'd be ashamed if I was Crytek. Hopefully CryEngine 3 will be crapload's more optimized, cos there's not much point buying the game if you can only run it on medium or low.
@wtf_G: Man, I want to see that water engine put to use in some awesome underwater games. Don't really explore the ocean much in video games. At least not with a huge narrative. Bioshock had a bit, kinda, but not really. Would be awesome.
So, if you have an underwater camera, the lens will actually warp, distorting the image? Or do you mean your eyeballs do that? Because mine don't.
LindsayDarnified
@ara: /facepalm
amarney
@Sean MacLean: If you call severly castrated, and 90% less detail, being better optimized, ans scalable, anyone that has played crysis in pc, can see a massive diference from the console engine, and its not unexpected, both ps3 and 360 only have the 50% of power needed to run crysis well, thats why they made that special engine to consoles...
TOCATL
@deanbmmv: Does anyone use 1600*1200 anymore?? Its not even widescreen! I think they should be aiming at getting it playable on 1920x1200 which is the resolution most gamers are likely to use in the next 2-3 years and downscales nicely to 1080p. Playing Crysis at 1920x1200 is still not very attainable runnign at very high with 16xAA/AF even now with the latest tech (talking single GPU/Quad Core here) and that is just stupid.
robinthakur
the looks utterly amazing but i still doubt if anything commercially available is running this. They better tell us what we're going to need to this time.
@undefined: Oh good, another engine we wont be able to play until CryEngine 4 comes out
ryan2107
@0xC001D00D: Well it is their new engine, which is technically the new PC engine for their games that will this time be doable on the next gen consoles.
I guess they should just rename it to something that doesn't make it sound like an actual successor :P
wtf_G
Watching this, and watching the previous city one, I wish they'd make a Blade Runner game in this engine.
This doesn't look much better than Cry2, they should call the engine CryEngine 2B.
AnthonM2
@ara: uh, because that's what it looks like underwater in real life?
curly haired boy
@Apreche: When you think of what it takes to get all that foliage into a scene without everything coming to crawl, you'll understand why they use jungle.
Immutablyme
Someone is screwing with Kotaku, this is an old CE2 video from SIGGRAPH 2006.

*sigh*
Stuff in water only looks wiggly and wavy like that when viewed THROUGH the surface, i.e. when you're above water looking at stuff underwater, or vice versa. Sunlight would be refracted through the surface, and plants would sway in the current, yes. But if you're underwater looking at other stuff underwater, rocks and sand DON'T wiggle around like that.
It's like game designers have never been to the pool or something....

In reality there is no weavy distortion in your view. Why do games have to cling on such relic from early days of 3D when they can create the actual visual effects of being underwater? Just because gamers are used to it?
This useless in SD quality. Link to HD version or something.
@-MasterDex-:
Wait what am I thinking, I run Warhead at "Enthusiast" fine on £700 kit, what did he talk me into.
Though it does tear every now n then. However I only get really smooth at Medium on the same kit with Crysis, high start's to push it a bit mainly the screen tear again, though it's still not running it at Very high.
Anywho I seem to be forgetting the games I play, and I'm feeling drowsy, I think I'm gonna lay down for a bit.
Oh n console's struggle to pass 720p, PS3 n 360 can maybe run Crysis with the settings turned most of the way down, but even then it'd be pointless. Hoepfully whit Free Radical for at least PS3 development the new engine will do fine on console's.
@-MasterDex-: I'll try to be more clear, I don't complain about the view through the surface in games, I'm talking about the view underwater. Games apply the same distortion to underwater scenes as if the character would be looking through moving water surface all the time. When you are underwater the water does not distort your view like that, it certainly distorts color, etc. but it does not make your whole view weave.
@deanbmmv: Don't worry about it, the power of Kotaku can influence the mind in mysterious ways. XD
-MasterDex-
A: People are complaining that they can't play our

B: Don't worry, I have a solution...
