Sony Europe Studio Boss Takes His Final Bow

Jamie MacDonald may not be a household name, but as boss of Sony’s London Studio for eight years, he’s overseen some of the most successful game series of all time. But no more.

MacDonald has announced his departure from the company, and his last day will be May 29. Over those eight years, London Studio have developed the SingStar series, the EyeToy camera and The Getaway. Hey, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.

MacDonald was also boss of Sony’s Cambridge studio, and one of Sony World Wide Studio’s Vice Presidents. No reason was given for his leaving. He’s the second high profile resignation from London Studio in recent months, after SingStar boss Paulina Bozek jumped ship for Atari last year.

Man, why do we have to loose the good people (take not that Hibernation-Reeves is not amongst said group of "good people")?

Can't we loose Stern? Howard Stern? I'd like to loose Stern. And the japanese bosses who think they should keep everything that is good and just on PSN to themselves.

You know, fire people until we get the ones that procrastinate with PSN and I'm happy.

  • xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx

@offshore: Not to mention Kaz hirai was fired. Seems like Sony's talent is slipping away a little but they're probably hiring good people to replace them anyway.

@Antiterra: In a way, yes. With the volatile market, if they don't handle things carefully and put someone in there that knows what he's doing...the whole thing could go down the crapper.

  • Zeag

They are all flocking to Atari, just to infiltrate them and make Atari's games exclusives to Playstation :o

  • fELIXADER

@ttocs: I think the change of the market would call for a lower price of the PS3 and not for top people leaving a company.
    Cause:
Lower amount of money + High Price = Thinking three times if buying (And if someone has to think three times the second was already a no.)
Lower amount of money + affordable price = higher Chance of buying/selling that damn thing.

But hey, who knows perhabs i am wrong.

  • Antiterra

@pukellunkett: No, he's Amy MacDonald's dad. He's the one who came up with the PS3 "This Is Living" slogan after listening to an early demo of his daughter's.
    True story.

  • pukellunkett

@Ackers: It would be much cooler if he was related to Norm MacDonald.

  • Antiterra

Every time I read about Studio Cambridge, I wonder why Primal never got a sequel. *sigh*

@ttocs: So, what you're saying is: it could be a good thing, unless it's a bad thing? That's some shrewd reasoning there! (I jest, I jest... :P )

  • Bum_Trumpet

I bet Paulina Bozek is kicking herself after the news about Atari earlier.

  • Ackers

@ThursdayNext: But why :-( i saw a video of it, and it looked awsome... i thought it would be cool to drive around london in HD, i am sad now

  • BarbeQueQ

He looks handsome. In a not homosexual way.

  • Gutek

    @Ackers:

getaway for ps3 has been canceled.

  • ThursdayNext

@Ackers: Or he could be related to Ronald M(a)cDonald or Old MacDonald.

I think it got canned, can't prove it though.

All these people leaving could turn out to be a great thing... or an absolutely horrible thing for Sony... i only hope its the former.

  • offshore

    Man, they're all leaving/fleeing.

Harrision, Reeves, "The Father" and now MacDonald.

Tretton, have you had any thoughts about leaving? Please say yes...

  • Ackers

he could be related to Ramsay Mac Donald PM of UK for labour.... im sorry this is my history revision seeping out.

What ever happened to the getaway for ps3...i never really found out, anyone?

  • Sebnotic- Wish Me A Happy 19th B

The getaway was a good game. Guess I really like sandbox games.

  • ttocs

Change could be good for Sony. This guy did his job well, but with the changing market and the economic downturn, a little change may be just what they need. On the other hand, it could be their demise if not handled properly.

  • ttocs

@indyit: Couldn't agree more. The new blood could bring fresh new ideas...or the screws on the ship could come popping out and result in a catastrophic waste. Sure, the ship sinking would take years, but nothing happens overnight. For Sony's sake, and the sake of my PS3...I hope the new crew know what they are doing.

I'm still not taking my Jamie MacDonald pictures off the wall

Transitioning talent is a good thing and that applies to the big guys as well.

Just make sure you keep Stringer there Sony. The man knows what he's doing.

Having your losses cut in half in a year is good stuff.

Sounds like this time next year, SCE will be completely out of it.

@Sebnotic- Wish Me A Happy 19th Birthday: i assumed they were talking about the eye toy.

  • Cueil

@Polite Society: Tell a 7 year old boy the eye toy was a failure and you may get a kick in the nuts
