Star Trek D-A-C, Texas Cheat ‘Em Beam To Xbox LA This Week
This week’s new additions to the Xbox Live Arcade library are both out of this world and down to earth, as Star Trek D-A-C and Texas Cheat ‘Em become Xbox 360 digital downloads on Wednesday.
Both Naked Sky Entertainment’s Star Trek D-A-C and Wideload’s Texas Cheat ‘Em will set Xbox Live subscribers 800 Microsoft Points, offering top-down space combat and rule-bending, card-based mini-games, respectively. Let us know of your intent to pick either up in the comments.

@Grumpz®: Internet Guardian Angel®: Please stay out of my dreams.
@Kobun: I loved Hexic when I first got it (3 years ago) but I must admit I didn't know these other games were free. Are they out free in the UK? I am away from my 360 at the minute to check.
FREE is FREE - it doesn't matter how amazing the game is, if you get something that you can have fun with for a couple of hours and it didn't cost anything, then it's great.

@Mike Newlad: Dammit. I thought it was five. I keep thinking Undertow is still free.
Aegis Wing
TotemBall
Hexic HD
Dash of Destruction
None are ground breaking or particularly amazing, but free is free. :^) Aegis Wing is still the best of the bunch, but that "adver-game" Dash of Destruction can be a good amount of fun with some people.
@NINgod: what makes it even stupider is that they are charging for what is essentially an ad.

@PhageLab: it's just marvel vs capcom 2
Grumpz®: Internet Guardian Angel®
@Kobun: 5?
Mike Newlad
@NINgod: star trek games get released all the time. there is nothing about this one that indicates that it ties in with the movie.
It looks like the Star Trek game has the prerequisite number of lens flairs to match the latest movie, but I don't think I'll pick up either.
@malfunktionv2: There remain five free XBLA games, though one requires that rebranded EyeToy camera. I gotta say that pricing of late aside, I've been more than happy with the XBLA releases. Seems like lately when there is a weaker line-up such as this week, Microsoft will push out multiple games to try to appeal to as many as possible.
If these two games don't appeal to you, then consider checking out Community Games channel. Hieronymus Bash will be the best 200 points you've spent in a while. :^)
@Struct09: How DARE you not be satisfied with Aegis wing?! It only came out two years ago!
malfunktionv2
@Mike Newlad: You mean there should be a version where people wait in line to play?
In all seriousness, MS actually gave out the first Texas Hold Em XBLA game for free for a limited time.
I can't help but think Texas Cheat'em would be something that PS3 owners would get for free inside Home. It's about time Microsoft started giving us some games.
Mike Newlad
@MDX: I would probably like Texas Cheat 'em, especially if it is made by the same team who did Texas Hold'em on the 360 with a similar "non complicated" look and feel.
Mike Newlad
Not a huge Star Trek fan, and don't need another poker game soo...

I'll just wait for Marvel vs Capcom 2 Super Oh My God HD Remix Acid Flashback.
@spamspaz: It also wins for most uninformative.
I'll be set back Zero points this week. Banjo-Tooie is still delightfully occupying my time.

@MDX:
As if luck wasn't enough of a factor for noobs to beat you.
This article wins for the most confusing title ever.

Wow. That Star Trek game almost looks like Star Control to me. I'll have to try it and get disappointed myself.
oooooo a movie plug! cool!
wait no, this is stupid.
Texas Cheat em? Huh?
MDX
This actually has a little too much pew pew going on.
I LOVED the new Star Trek movie. Just had to throw that out there.

@BallPtPenTheif: For gods sakes man! Use two zeros when you spell that word!! It's tradition so stop conforming to the machine ye lad!
@PhageLab: lol
Grumpz®: Internet Guardian Angel®
@NINgod: Yeah, I know right? It's not like it's based on an existing franchise, right?
I wonder if either of these games will continue the current trend of advertising the game at one price and then uping it a couple days later or letting you play a couple of levels and then tell you you have to pay extra to continue playing?
Cyco
@Mike Newlad: Free is free until you need a monthly gold subscription or an otherwise useless camera peripheral. I don't know if any of those actually require a gold acct, since I've been actively gold since day 1.
Don't get me wrong, thanks to demo's I've never wasted points (except on a theme or 2 that I never used), I just can't say I'm not a little unhappy about the amount of cash I'm expected to pour into this damned fantastic thing in order to stay entertained. A freebie every so often, even as small as aegis wing, would be a nice "hey, thanks for giving us hundreds of your dollars, here's something our mailboy's nephew cooked up."
P.S. hexic is far from free. As soon as you see hexic 2 you're forced to think "hey, that one must be way better!" and are practically mind-controlled into buying it.
malfunktionv2
@Gein07: blasphemy!!! No such thing!!
@Bialia: Ditto. Saw it twice. Loved it twice.
@spamspaz: Seriously. "Star Trek has a Texas Cheat'em Beam? Sounds scary."
@Kobun: A new Star Control would be awesome, on any kind of platform.
@Kobun: You clearly hadn't seen it- your assessment couldn't be more off. It does the source material proud. This has nothing to do with the Transformers movie at all. Try being a little more positive. It feels good.
Bialia
@Bialia: I haven't yet. Not a fan of seeing popular franchises getting the Dawson's Creek treatment a la Transformers.
@malfunktionv2: hexic is far from free. As soon as you see hexic 2 you're forced to think "hey, that one must be way better!" and are practically mind-controlled into buying it.
Then you have a weak mind and/or zilch for will power. :p The game is free. Nothing will change that until Microsoft starts charging for it.
Likewise, expecting a free game every so often just because you purchased a console is silly. If you want cheap games, look into the Community Games section. There's lots of fun to be had for 200 points a pop there, and older (but still solid) XBLA titles such as Geometry Wars and Assault Heroes remain fairly cheap at 400.
@Bialia: Yes, I clearly haven't seen it since I already stated as much. :p I'll start being positive when Hollywood stops retrofitting every movie with annoying kids, though I do understand that being a film based on the academy/first voyage that naturally the cast should be young. Just bugs me (I felt the same about the Watchmen movie), though I'll still check it out thanks to the great reviews I've been seeing.
