A detonation in the fictional Empire City of newly-released inFamous jacked gas prices, as seen in this shot we took. Yesterday in Brooklyn, 87 octane was $US2.55. In Liberty City, last year, it was $US3.59.

@Koztah:
You are soooo correct!
I can't believe how many people don't even know that oil extraction has stopped growing.
Demand has slowed for the recession so prices have come down but production can no longer rise.
Most of the large oil fields are nearing EoL and most new discoveries are small.
Oil is fading and we are not ready.
Not even close!

@Yertle8: True, but our limited production of crude oil does help. I live in Texas and I know our prices are slightly cheaper here than other states thanks to our coastal oil. You do have a good point though, however I don't agree that it should be done that way but that's another arguement all together. Personally I'd rather see my tax dollars go to getting us off crude oil, unfortunately our previous administration depending too heavily on oil companies to worry about such a thing.

Ah, yes this point (or the same point stated differently) I do agree with. We are very fortunate to be paying less for gas and our factors involved in why its so low compared to other nations. But any large increase let alone $8.50+ would cripple our economy over night as we are so dependent on oil. A national heath care backed by higher taxes on gas, or taxes in general, would at least give more reason to the rise in gas prices. Also, I hate it when people use use the "don't like it then leave its worse in other countries" argument, as it ignores the different reasons (economy, taxes, producer/importer, politics, giant monster attacks) in a countries price in oil. Seems like that wasn't your original intent. ;)

@everyone: I think, after reading everyone's posts, that my original point was misunderstood. Devoid of the reasoning, gas in America is relatively inexpensive. Therefore, the cost of gas could be significantly higher (if for instance we instituted socialized health care, as shadowXion stated). I hate it when people generically whine about high gas prices because it is generally an empty complaint based around how cheap gas used to be. But, considering Americans pay significantly lower taxes (in general, most 1st world countries are far more socialized then the US... oooooo scary, "socialism!") and considering we pay significantly lower gas-specific taxes, we are very fortunate that we pay so little for gas. And to stop anyone from starting another argument, this is not a thread supporting or opposing socialism.

But the reason the other countries you listed have cheap gas prices is because they produce the crude oil (I know this is a gross oversimplification due to the cost of refining crude oil, and considering we pay significantly for oil refining as a sort of kick back to those said countries, yada yada economics is a vicious circle.) @Lozmaster:
Try using Google before you attempt, and fail, at being snarky.
"A fuel tax (also known as a petrol tax, gasoline tax, gas tax or fuel duty) is a sales tax imposed on the sale of fuel. In most countries, the fuel tax imposed on fuels which are intended for transportation. Fuels used to power agricultural vehicles, and/or home heating oil which is similar to diesel are taxed at a different, usually lower, rate.
In the United States, the fuel tax receipts are often dedicated or hypothecated to transportation projects so that the fuel tax is considered by many a user fee. In other countries, the fuel tax is a source of general revenue."
In America fuel tax varies by state and cold be anywhere between 30~50 cents per gallon. On average, 60% of what Europeans pay at the pump goes to their governments in taxes. In Britain the government takes about 75% and raises taxes by 5 percent above inflation every year. The percentage might have changed in the past year due to increasing protest, but how the taxes get used has mostly stayed the same.
I'm assuming that the prices are high in Empire City because they've been quarantined and cut off from further gas shipments

@grantanamo: Our gas prices aren't relative to our production (or lack thereof) of crude oil, but our purchasing power and our refining. We refine the majority of oil we purchase, cutting our costs drastically. Gasoline prices are artificially inflated by futures and oil conglomerates. It could and should be much cheaper.

@carrliadiere: On a related note - I was confused at the mention of "87 Octane", thinking to myself "but the stuff I buy in the UK is 95 RON, is American petrol really that shit?". So I went and read up about it on Wikipedia-that-always-lies - apparently US petrol octane is stated as a mean of the RON and the MON, which makes it 4-5 points lower.
So it's not so bad as I first thought, but US 87 Octane is still only 92-93RON. So we may be paying more over here but at least we're getting higher-octane petrol for it. ;-)
(I'm also curious how this affects engines - both the vehicles I own say in the manual to use minimum 95RON fuel to avoid engine damage...)

@Bichatse: Most gas stations offer 3 selections in the US. 87/89 is the lowest depending on the state you are in. This is used by the general consumer for the average car. A 85 ford f-150 doesn't need 95RON by any means, it just makes it pollute more.
91 Octane is usually mid-grade, IDK who buys that but its there.
and 93 octane is the high grade stuff. My car requires at least 91 octane or I risk engine knocking as it tries to compensate. So your 95 RON minimum is about the same as a US 91 octane minimum.

@Koztah:

And this must be why Cole is so amazing and used to jumping around buildings.

@grantanamo: this all is extremly funny...... why are all of you guys wasting your time agrueing... all i know is the west has higher gas prices because it needs to be shipped to the gulf. gas prices fluxeate because we really dont know how much is left. there are estimates but they can be wrong. Now I THINK (could be wrong) that other countries at time can be greedy at time, or they could just be cautious. No one is aloud to blame anyone but nature, if oil were produced faster we wouldnt have any issues i bet. and that my 2 cents.

It would be awesome if gas prices changed depending on your actions.

@ShadowXion: You are WRONG WRONG WRONG!
We, in the UK already pay a seperate road tax for road repairs and a seperate tax for social health care called national insurance, which comes out of your wages wether you use the health care or not! So stop spreading lies! Educate yourself before you start posting on matters you know nothing about.
grantanamo is correct, as far as gas prices are concerned, Americans are EXTREMELY lucky.
@NeVeRMoRe666: Not me. I work hard, and an not irresponsible with my money. Don't buy shit I can't afford, live in a tiny apartment. I don't want to pay for the idiot that that lives beyong his/her means.
Hey_Blinkon
@grantanamo: Most of the producing countries don't have adequate refining ability (at least until recently). Thus, they have a crude, but effectively have to outsource refining. That is why gas in Iran is expensive, and, as a result, is governmentally subsidized.
Hey_Blinkon
@Burlsan: Huge fluctuations in gas prices between countries are largely dictated by the taxes. The reason they are low in those other countries (Mexico, Iran, etc) is because there is a huge government subsidy going on.
Hey_Blinkon

@ShadowXion: I hate it when people say give the "don't like it then leave its worse in other countries" argument as well (though I understand how my original comment was interpreted that way). I generally stand along the line of, "America is great, really great in comparison to a lot of the world. You should genuinely feel fortunate for being an American. Could the USA be improved? Hell yes! That should be everyone's goal, to make their country, and the world a better place. But we can recognize our country's faults without losing our sense of gratitude for what we have."
grantanamo
@grantanamo: COMMIE!!!! GET EM' :D
So, in other news, who thinks socialism kicks ass?
@grantanamo:
Seems like that wasn't your original intent. ;)
@Poul Wrist: Back to your island, with the 'shhhh' and the 'hush'. :p
@Dennen: I pee'd a little bit. Totally owe me pants.
PS. I was going to pee them anyway, this is a remotely reasonable excuse however.
I'd say the prices are jacked because the city is in quarantine.
@VirgoKnight:
There is no future in gas. Fossil fuels need to be replaced, like twenty years ago.
Koztah
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.:
Indeed, the gas prices are nothing when you consider the elevated risk of having both you and your car blown up in all too frequent crossfires.

@jargy1: A gallon of gas is about 7 bucks here in Denmark where I live.

I'm surprised it's not more expensive in the game. Unless currency in the quarantined city has deflated a bunch.
Voltar
@Southrncomfortjm:
long before it disappears the free market would encourage the auto industry to move away from it, with or without government mandate. because someone like you or me will go "hmm gas gets rarer and rarer might as well go with something that uses an easier to find resource (or look at the price of fuels, rare gas will go up in price supply and demand)."
or... we are already capable of synthesizing gas! with more time it will become more efficient, unless we find something easier to use as fuel.
Aaron Monroy
@grantanamo:
Thanks for pointing this out.
@undefined: High gas prices? WONDERFULL! Best think that happend to all of us in a long time! It's time clean energy gets a boost!
Mlata
@snuter: Word.
@Valnen: Wonder what everyone will do once all of the gas disappears. You know there's a limited supply right? We'll all be taking public transportation, walking or biking soon enough. That is, unless law makers, car manufacturers and energy companies get off their collective asses and find us alternative fuels that, you know, aren't in limited supply.
@Valnen: Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd wow. Just wow.
grantanamo
And to stop anyone from starting another argument, this is not a thread supporting or opposing socialism.
grantanamo
This is completely wrong.
Everyone knows that premium is always 10 cents more expensive then regular, regardless of price.
Acebuckeye13
@PositivelyGreg:
This one's the best one. That'll do pig, that'll do.
@grantanamo: I don't care. It's still too expensive. And it's retarded in those other countries. Anyone who isn't rich would be forced to take public transportation or walk. No thanks. I'd rather not live in such a terribad country.
@VirgoKnight: I love that the gas price for Unleaded was only $1.35 in Terminator Salvation. Sure, the machines have enslaved us all, but the gas is cheap!
We should tell the people from Liberty City about it!
The price of ga-as keeps on rising, nothing comes for free
The future is bleak.
Pizookie
@excel_excel: Just assault?
Not.... battery?
@Poul Wrist: LOL thanks, I try my best to be, *gulp*, globally informed.
@Burlsan: You are completely right about why the US has lower gas prices, no argument there. But the reason the other countries you listed have cheap gas prices is because they produce the crude oil (I know this is a gross oversimplification due to the cost of refining crude oil, and considering we pay significantly for oil refining as a sort of kick back to those said countries, yada yada economics is a vicious circle.) I'll settle for a compromise that I misunderstood your original point.
grantanamo
@Lozmaster:
Try using Google before you attempt, and fail, at being snarky.
[en.wikipedia.org]
Some articles:

[answers.yahoo.com]
[www.csmonitor.com]
[news.bbc.co.uk]
Read more, troll less.
I'm assuming that the prices are high in Empire City because they've been quarantined and cut off from further gas shipments
Just saying man! Diesel is always 10-20 cents cheaper here in montana.
Ghostwise
Bichatse
@lil-hand: Our gas prices are cheaper because they are subsidized. By our taxes. That simple.

Wow, thats expenisve...but maybe you should see the price of fuel in the UK now THATS expensive and real as well.
On a side note, i just finished this pack of Sensations Poppadoms, quite nice they were too and my mum came up found out that i ate them all called me a bastard then slapped me on the head and stormed off...i laughed. (I would have felt bad if she hadn't hit me)
@Lozmaster: Thanks Loz, at least you have a brain.
@Burlsan: Did you really just quote gas prices of countries THAT PRODUCE ALL OF THE CRUDE OIL THE WORLD BUYS? You blow me away, because after that ridiculous comparison you use a very reasonable comparison like England, proving my point.
The fact is, for any 1st world country that does not produce a large portion of the worlds crude oil supply we have insanely low gas prices. ESPECIALLY relative to our economy and dollar strength.
grantanamo
well, on the bright side the 70 cents a gallon I have to pay to get premium no longer seems so bad.
