Tomb Raider: Underworld Unearths Trophies Next Week
PlayStation 3 owners tired of playing Tomb Raider: Underworld and getting nothing in return find relief next week, as Eidos readies a patch to add trophy support to Lara’s latest.
Just in time for the PlayStation 3 version to become a £19.99 Platinum Hit in the UK, Eidos has announced that a patch to add trophy support to Tomb Raider: Underworld will be released on May28th. The announcement was delivered via the Eidos forums by community manager Keir Edmonds.
I am pleased to be able to announce that the PS3 Trophy Patch for Tomb Raider: Underworld has a confirmed worldwide release date of Thursday the 28th of May. Huzzah! Sorry for the delay and thank you very much to those who were able to wait patiently, it’s really appreciated and I hope you get some great Raiding out of it.
Keir gets extra points for using the word “huzzah”, a favourite on mine since my days as a renaissance fair frequenter.

@Bricked: Why, yes... yes you are. ;-)

@zgreenwell:
LOL i might buy this game, just because it have trophies.
@misc.insanity: While the rest of us remember a time when we didn't need superfluous 'trophies' to show off our 'skills' or determine our game purchases...
Yea, those times sucked. Now get with the trophies Kojima.
@crabperson:
Since MGO was a seperate install from the single-player game I don't think it would be that hard to patch in a few trophies.
Am I the only one who doesn't give a rat's ass about trophies/achievements?
Bricked
@zgreenwell:
the fact is that trophies have boosted the sales of some games eg. Superstardust HD.
With the platinum release iminent, Eidos held back immplementing trophies until a new retail copy was on shop shelves.
More chance of people buying a cheap new copy and making Eidos some money, rather than boosting the sales of the previous version that is most commonly found secondhand and getting nothing.
Do you think we might see the DLC for Underworld sometime in the near future?
@zgreenwell: I think one reason is that it was already done. They didn't have to release trophies in the NA/EU releases since it was released in 2008. Since they Japanese version was released in 2009 trophies were required, so why not toss them into the other releases to try to squeeze out a few sales?
I've been waiting for this game to get a price drop. Right now in Canada it's hovering at about $40. Drop it $10 more and they've got a sale.
Well I've been trying to decide if I buy this game or not. Legends was ok and I need some kind of fix to tide me over till Uncharted 2 arrives.

The countdown from there site reveals that at E3 53 trophies will be released for the game.
Also unlike Bionic Commando Rearmed, Trophies for MGS4 were never promised. BC:R was promised and they just recently lied and said we'll never get them now, because they have to put all there resources on the new Bionic Commando. Seriously it shouldn't take a whole team to add trophies, just 1 guy who takes the 360 achievments and turns them into trophies.

@BarbeQueQ: ok

"And meanwhile those waiting for trophies for MGS4 sit...and wait..."
While the rest of us remember a time when we didn't need superfluous 'trophies' to show off our 'skills' or determine our game purchases...
Hmmm, trying to decide whether it's worth trudging through this again to get trophies... it was kinda fun to start with, but slowly just turned into a bore...
@Christopher Jones: I see what you did there :)
@zgreenwell: Yeah, If they wanted attention they would swing that 360 only alternate ending and extra levels and character the PS3's way. Fallout did it, why not them. It's because of the 360 exclusive content I didn't buy it on any system. Buying the 360 version I would be supporting the practice, buying the PS3 version I would be buying a game which had content cut to be added as DLC later (They said that it wouldn't have been made were it not for DLC but it wouldn't be the first delayed TR game).
I don't like the Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider games anyway but if they want my money they have to release the full game on every console.

@fatheadwilson:
They do...Games that were released before the mandatory trophies can do whatever they want.
@zgreenwell: Devs can't win with that attitude. If they do things just to get sales, people complain. If they do things for gamers that won't influence sales, people complain. I for one am pleased about this. I was going to get this for the 360 for the achievements (and I love me some tomb raider!) when I get around to it, but the graphics looked better on PS3 so now maybe I'll get it for that and see what the trophies are.
@crabperson: I was thinking the same lol
I wish Sony would just require trophies in all games when they release.
@titobudd: Not to mention, all the CQC trophies they could do, and collecting every weapon, item, and so on.
notquitedeadyet
Cool! This will make me replay the game. That said, I don't really care one way or another about trophies/achievements in games.
If they would link them to something like real prizes (as has been tossed about from time to time) it would pique my interest a whole lot more.
I wish they would just put patches out for most games.
Resistance one needs Trophies, Motorstorm 1 is hard as hell and needs trophies.
EVERY 360 game has achievements, even those worthless burger king games.
Crypysmoker
Better late than never..
While its nice that they're doing this I'm not sure how many people care. It isn't like adding trophy support at this point is going to get them any extra sales. It makes me wonder why they even bothered putting in the effort.
Eidos would like you to hold your opinion of the trophies until the next Thursday after they are released or else we won't tell you anything else :)
Christopher Jones
No problem, I patiently waited to give them money for this game because of the lack of trophy support so it's really not my loss now that it has trophies and is cheaper.
How ironic, I just got this game from Gamefly. Might as well wait until next week to toss it into the system, then.
That is, if my soul hasn't been eaten by inFamous by then. Sigh.
its about time!
Alright! It's only like a year later too! Way to stay on the ball Eidos. /sarcasm

@excel_excel: And if they ever did come, I would have to get the damn Big Boss Emblem again.
Not that I mind now. It's been a long time since I have played.
HIlarious....."The best of Playstation 3"
It's A TARP!!!!!
No seriously, this game's mediocre at best and is nothing like the PS3's other AAA games, like MGS4 or KZ2.
BarbeQueQ
@fitzroythompson: Balrog, is that you?

@Dead Giveaway:
Yeah, standard Platinum box-art since PS2 days.
Petter then the MGS4 re-release box-art. that was hideous.
@-MasterDex-: There's always the obligatory "kill 30 guys with this weapon" or "collect all weapons". Stuff like that makes sense. And as excel mentioned, more trophies specific to the fairly unique MGS world.
@crabperson: As far as I can remember, I don't think the trophy system was implemented when MGS4 was released.
@excel_excel: I suppose they're trophy worthy.
@Kyolux: You make a fair point.
I suppose a speed run would be trophy worthy too. I could see a few trophy possibilities but I didn't find MGS4 to have a whole lot of replay value.
-MasterDex-
@crabperson: I'm mainly talking about the bold yellow platinum sticker, yuck!
@excel_excel: I really hate Konami for going with their own system and not integrating MGS4 into the PSN. I know that's the only logical reason that MGS4 hasn't been patched. The only reason I haven't tried to beat the game on Big Boss hard is because I'm waiting for something I know won't come...
Wouldn't it be hilarious if Kojima's announcement was just an updated MGS4 with trophies? I would laugh...
crabperson
@excel_excel: Yes, we are all still waiting...
Snappywave: subtitle option + more access = profit
@-MasterDex-: Not even The Boss Hard with no alerts/no kills?
If MGS4 isn't trophy worthy. No games is. Seriously. And seriously not Tomb Raider Underworld, one of the worst excuse for a game I played last year.
But if you want silly excuses for trophies, look at the new Terminator game. You get ALL of them by simply beating your way through hard mode or something.
Whatever Mike. You know you love "Huzzah" because of Tobias Funke!
sascha23
@-MasterDex-: Well there is the elblem awards given at the end of the game. A trophy for each elblem would be something!
@Dead Giveaway: Of course it is. Do a Google search and you'll see that plastered all over the images page.
crabperson
@excel_excel: Not to invalidate your cause but is there a whole lot of need for a trophy patch for MGS4? I can't think of all that much in the game that would be trophy worthy.
-MasterDex-
And meanwhile those waiting for trophies for MGS4 sit...and wait...
Ooooh, nothing like Trophies to get me to replay a game.
omgCRAZY
That can't be the real box art... right?
HUZZAH!!!
Finally, I will gladly restart the game for this.
Europe is entirely kicking our ass with Greatest Hits/Platinum range. We had one set released in July 08 and even then they generally had better titles released for it. Right now they've got almost twice as many titles including: Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, and Folklore. Just about the only title to be released exclusively in the North American Greatest Hits line that's worth considering is Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

@AnonUserAnonymous: This guy has the idea!
@misc.insanity: Way to miss my point idiot. I've already bought MGS4.
@Ghostwise: Honestly, if they want to improve their tail end sales, I guess this is smart. A little bit of good press and a extra reason for the trophy hunters. In another 6 month you release it as budget and you basically 2 additional sales peaks without much work.
