Unknown Worlds Triumphantly Teases Natural Selection 2
The developers of popular Half-Life mod Natural Selection are preparing to release standalone sequel Natural Selection 2 this year via Steam, and we’ve got the exclusive teaser trailer to prove it.
Last we heard, the development of the standalone sequel to one of the most played Half-Life 2 mods had hit a financial snag, with developers forced to sell their bodies Sudoku to get by. Now we learn that grassroots fund raising and investor capital have given developer Unknown Worlds all they need to finish the game, which will be released later this year via Steam.
Like the original Half-Life mod, Natural Selection 2 pits two teams of up to 16 players against each other in a battle between space marines and the aliens who would infect them, featuring real-time alien infestation effects and a great deal of strategic gameplay for those looking for something more from their shooter.
I’d have to say the game is looking absolutely gorgeous. The team at Unknown Worlds have crafted their own game engine for the project, and everything you see in the video is created using said engine. Not bad for a four-person development team, huh?
Oh, and for those of you unfamiliar with the mod, that giant beastie up there? That’s an Onos, and it’s playable. Yum.
Find out more at the official Natural Selection 2 website.

I was such a pwnbot in the game. One of the best FPS ever, even topping CS 1.3, Action Quake and Future vs Fantasy
NS1 is one of my favorite games of all time. I CAN NOT wait for this game. NS is without a doubt the best mod ever.
RiotControl
cant wait but people are talking as if the first one died out when it didn't >>
w000000t! NS2 is gonna rock so hard. :)

@guspaz: Kinda like aliens vs predator, just marines vs aliens and one person plays the role of commander (by stepping into this podlike device) -- where they get a top down view to help command and employ strategies for the marines.

@Vintage: how dare you forget about CS, FLF, and TFC!

YES! FUCK YES! HOLY SHIT YES!

@[twitter.com]:
This one isnt a mod. The developers created their own engine with NS2..
The first one was a HL 1 mod

Pre-ordered! Speshul Edition! :D:D:D:D

@R0YB0T: Brilliant is an understatement.
When NS1 first came out, I was thoroughly impressed by the blending of RTS & FPS components. This game is definitely one of my favorites of all-time.
Game of the year!!!
shinobemon
Ok follow me on this one, Valve buys these guys company (I'm surprised this hasn't happened yet) and their major announcement for E3 is that this game, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2 Complete (all the new maps and weapons plus able to get sameday updates as PC) Counterstrike Source, AudioSurf and Half Life 2 Episode 3 get bundled together as the "Black Box" and sold this Christmas for PC and 360. Heads explode around the world, everyone with a brain buys and Valve claims yet another mountain of GOTY again.
rinerdar
@Pombar: glad to help :)
SideAngleSide
Yarr, do want.
@Shiryu: I was there when Team Fortress was a Quake mod /brag
Damn Kotaku, buying up exclusives.
How exclusive can a trailer really be?
But yeah, never played the first, but I've got some friends who own TF2 and stuff, but STILL play it nearly all the time, so I'm guessing they're gonna love this.
@SideAngleSide: Ace. Thanks for making my day, dude.
@Etheris: one of the best online fps ever. It was a great mod for Half-Life 1, hands down the best multiplayer one
i cant tell you how much i played the first one.. it was so awesome.. so amazing for its time hehe i loved to play as an alien worker building the resource towers and healing everyone :P
will buy this one for sure!!
pd: i see the oh noes (onos) has changed a lot.. hope it feels and plays like the first one (most prolly)
xzero
@KaneRobot: Yeah, I stopped when the community really started dying and the noobs stopped playing the actual proper maps in favour of those crappy short 10 minute level up ones. bloody combat maps.. :(
I will buy this game, if only to compensate them for the awesomness of the first one.
I wish they would stick with source though, if they are really using a new engine, who
knows how long it'll take for them to finish, if ever...

@SideAngleSide: oh, here it is:
"We will initially release NS2 on Windows (through our web-site and through Steam). After that we plan to bring it to the Mac and the Xbox 360. Maybe even Linux."

Awesome! Pre-ordered and looking forward to it!
zoz
@Pombar: ya i can't find the text at the moment, but i've been following development closely, and they have definitely said they plan on bringing it to mac & 360. whether that will actually happen, i have no idea, just reporting the facts.
SideAngleSide
CANT FUCKING WAIT!!!!!
James Gornall
I will gladly pay anything for this game.
Need a baby? I'll steal one.
Soul? Check.

Yay! There is a god. I thought this was vapo-ware, but no more!

Pre-ordered!

Hell yes. I cannot wait. I loved the original and I will be playing this.
Finally!

@MissingPieces: Someone missed the original Natural Selection.
Shavo
@dLMN8R: Not according to SideAngleSide, but as I said, I didn't think it was remotely possible. It was a wistful pipe dream said as an aside to my fanranting about it.
Man, it's been so long since I've played NS, but damn did I love that game to death. I hadn't seen anything since they announced their in-house engine...looking good :D
Methinks I'll be pre-ordering when I get home ;)
@Pombar: Seconded, NS is one of the best multiplayer games I've ever played. This makes me very happy indeed! :)
diebroken
@Vintage: Source was too awkward for what they wanted to add so they used their own engine.

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE, DOUBLE YOUR FUN
@Archaotic: my last wish is to see science and industry made into a well done source game.... *prays*

Ahh NS, easily the greatest HL mod since the original (and un-Valve'd) Day of Defeat.
I await NS2 with great anticipation. Take your time Flayra, Max and co. It'll be great.

OMG YESSSSSSSSS
SKULK RUSH!!! Protect the command chair!
Day one purchase -- and probably the one D1P for me, ever.
@necrozim: But...but why would you pleasure yourself to it..
Very impressive trailer coming from just a 4-man team!
Doom III?
MissingPieces
Damm, Im feeling old again...
Not only was I there when TFC debuted as the very first HL MOD, I was also there when 'Natural Selection' launched their first playable build. It was impossible to play duriong the first night, every server had ping over 500, a nightmare.
I really hope these guys make this one sell, it is truly innovative when it came out and im surprised their core gameplay has not been copied by other games.
HL1 mods...STEAM wasn't even talked about... good times, simpler times.
@AZoMBiE:i think they used source to make the game. not an engine they built from the ground up. but i could be wrong.
Vintage
@yargh:
No, you're not!
Go to unknownworlds.com they have a bunch of texture previews and podcasts, one of the few that I listen to regularly. :)
TenP
and i jizzed in my pants...

NO WAY! I felt like I was one of the few people that LOVED this game. I think I played it for two years. I didn't even know the dev team was still around, awesome news!
This looks super cool. Never played the first but will definitely play this one :)
@OkayOctane: I'm in the same boat; haven't played/heard of the 1st, but now intrigued.
Wooo! I've been closely following this game since it was announced!
TenP
@cobrax25:
woops, replied to the wrong person
cobrax25
@NeoTurbo: The original was a Half-Life 1 mod, but they managed to do some pretty impressive stuff with the GoldSrc engine. I don't think anybody would take issue with saying that it was the best looking Half-Life 1 mod out there.
guspaz
@AZoMBiE:
Im pretty sure its a Steam only release...and I doubt its gonna be a full priced game.
But on that subject, when Project Offset was first shown, it only had 4 developers...though it expanded pretty rapidly.
cobrax25

NS is a fantastic game, easily one of my top favorite shooters of all time. I still have it on my computer, and I still go back and play it every so often. I have been following the NS2 RSS feed for awhile now, and I can not wait for this game to hit.
Ultraseamus
Dude... that's effing insane.
a 4 man team that made a HL1 mod (it WAS fun tho, a lot) developed their own engine? and they're making a retail sequal? nuts!
I should of gotten into mod making T.T
AZoMBiE
@Pombar: 4 people developing their own engine from the ground-up and a game on top of it for PC? Realistic, often happens, and thanks to Steam, a capable and widespread distribution method.
Those same for people also porting said to the 360? You're frakking nuts if you think that's remotely possible for a game like this.
dLMN8R
This is by far my favorite FPS, and game in general.
TF2 is way up there, but NS takes it. The game is brilliant.
R0YB0T
@wazzzup16: evolve man, evolve!
@Archaotic: Yeah, caught me by surprise too. I used to like this game a lot back in the day. An old familiar fiend...the Ohnoz.....
@SideAngleSide: Ah, I wasn't aware of that, as I haven't checked out much of their website. I sorta just assumed they'd be unlikely to have the extra money to port it, when from the sounds of it they ran into financial trouble at some point. So my assumption is that they barely had enough capital to finish a PC version.
nworobes
@2001: A Space Odyssey: Hells yeah.
@DJClayWMTS: Haha, yeah. But damn, "Oh no!" is going to be even more appropriate this time.
@Archaotic: Well, gaming news for me, it's hit that spot. Dead Rising 2 has yet to really get my blood boiling, and Demon's Souls hasn't really grabbed me (blame it on not having a PS3 if you want, it could well be a large factor). I just feel like it's been a slow news year thus far, and this is the only thing to really have me bouncing up and down in my chair.
I'm a HUGE Natural Selections fan. I'll be pre-ordering this for sure.
Dopeski
@nworobes: That was my line of thinking, but while I'd sincerely wish for it to come out on 360, I hold no real hopes of it ever doing so.
@nworobes: Supposedly they have written the code such that it would be very easy to port to 360 (and mac, for that matter) and it is in the cards for both. Whether that actually comes to fruition, we shall see. At this moment though, they are planning on it.
SideAngleSide
Dude, that onos looks like at was made out of... cardboard boxes, not organic at all.
Hyperion2010
@[twitter.com]: It didn't at all, but in Pombar's defense, maybe since the original NS was a Half-Life mod, and since recently The Orange Box and Left 4 Dead came out on 360, somehow this might as well.
But yeah, there's really no connection. Independent PC developers really do not have the extra coin to also port their game to consoles.
nworobes
The trailer looks badass
that new onos model is fuckwin.
NS is still the game I've put the most time into, ever.
This is spoken as a long time gamer (both PC & console) who currently owns all three consoles. NS just completely owned me. So skill-based, with so much replayability. I still fire it up from time to time. COuldn't be more excited about this!
SideAngleSide
@Miguel Lescano: the next best mod
@NeoTurbo: It's a FPS/RTS hybrid. Really fantastic game. Hard to explain in brief but check out the wikipedia article on it.
[en.wikipedia.org])
Fantastic atmosphere and a lot of innovation.
KaneRobot
@[twitter.com]: Where in his post did he mention that he had read in the article that it was coming to the 360?
@wazzzup16: Hey it works for pokemon so why not ^_^
If you didn't have CS mod, you had NS. I am glad seeing these mod games getting a huge boost and selling it a budget price. Killing Floor comes to mind.
PsycheE
I have never liked shooters much, but when Natural Selection was out I played it so much. I just loved being the aliens. I will be all over this if the game if the basics (alien players vs human players) remain intact.
FINALLY. Stopped playing the original years ago but I'll pick this up in a heartbeat.
KaneRobot
@[twitter.com]: "this hitting 360 is highly unlikely, but it'd be the only thing that'd make this more exciting to me"
Apparently you don't know the meaning of *wishing for something*
I feel left out...What's Natural Selection? <__< The trailer interesed me.
NeoTurbo
I'm deeply, deeply excited.
@OkayOctane: It's still hands down the FPS that took more of my life than anything else.
It's a fantastic game, and I'm very proud to have been part of it's community.
Jurassic Park III?
Miguel Lescano
@Pombar: ..where in the article did it mention anything remotely 360?
@wazzzup16: Ok.
Sabbatai
@wazzzup16:
LOL
ADM86
Hell Yes!!! Fantastic mod the first time around... this looks really promising. Still worth checking out the first one if you haven't; still one of the most unique fps out there and it's free.
About time!
chewychomp
Awesome.
@Pombar:
I wouldn't go that far, with Dead Rising 2 and Demon's Souls and a lot of other stuff. But it's still good news.
Upon second viewing, it really drives home how badass the new Onos is. I wonder if they have a minigame for people being digested in it's stomach this time?
DJClayWMTS
@Archaotic: That Ohno only makes the name more fitting, too. This teaser is the most exciting bit of gaming news this year.
I refuse to buy this evolutionist propaganda!
wazzzup16
Holy shit. Natural Selection was one of the best Half-Life 1 mods next to They Hunger and Science and Industry.
How did I not know this was coming? Damn!
Holy fuck YES! I want to see much much more about this.
There are no ways to describe how awesome the first game was and how many untold hours I spent playing it.
DJClayWMTS
What's this? A game..a game about Darwinian theory? I think I'll be getting on steam now to download the first one.
Yes. The original Natural Selection was the best time I had with competitive shooters pre-TF2 - and I still think it's the better game. Of course, this hitting 360 is highly unlikely, but it'd be the only thing that'd make this more exciting to me.
Visually it looks like doom 3's graphic engine which isn't bad but it's something i'd possibly play
WANT!!!
a_pink_poodle
Oh wow, I just realized that door the Onos crashes through says "F4" on it. Awesome little touch there.
had alot of hackers in it back in the day, still nice to see a sequel to a really fun game
@[twitter.com]: the devs have mentioned a possible 360 version multiple times in blog posts.
Wow, looks great, NS was one of my favorite mods for HL I have ever played. Brings back memories watching this video. Can't wait till this is complete.
Josh Tate
ROFL the door says "F4" on it! Wow, nice reference
This is a button well known to NS players, as when one wants to exit the current game to go back to the "Ready Room" (such as if the whole team is about to lose), one hits F4.
The ready room is great, it's like a party after a long match.
HOLY SHIT
I've been waiting sense like 2004 for this.
I've been playing sense 1.02, and man does this make me happy. FALL 2009! PRE-ORDER NOW!!!
I love what they did with the Onos!
Hope my old NS clan will reform for this game. Would be awesome to play with the old dudes. Oh those where the days. Long live Division Wikings!
@Pombar:
I used to love yelling "I put the own in onos!"
There's something about those hallways I can't quite put my finger on... 3Dmark05?
