Use Your N64, NES & SNES Pads On The Wii
Not the first time this has been done, granted, but Komodo’s Retro adaptor is certainly the most elegant way of using all your old Nintendo pads on the Wii.
Due to come in at around $US20 when it ships in July, the Retro adaptor works like a controller hub, allowing you to use NES, SNES and N64 pads. What’s more, the hub is styled to look like an N64 (though you could say it looks as much like a 3DO.

@oremlk: It's mostly because, as a 16 year old I don't have a credit card. Buying from a shop boosts the price by about £6.
@Madness: As a kid, I would always put my shirt over the control stick and then spin it. It really helped against the friction
XForce
@SPECIALciaNAPKIN: Oh man, bumber ball was so good in college me and my friends would be up 'till 3 or 4 am just playing the bumper ball mini game. It was rididculous.
@GrimCW: Well, that's just the thing - I'd rather have carts. Also, many of NES/Genesis the carts can be had for a lot less than $5 or $8 a pop. I've picked up plenty of NES and Genesis games for $2 a piece, including Streets of Rage 2, Shinobi III, Super Mario Bros and Zelda.
$8 for an SNES rom is a complete rip, especially when I can get PSX games for $6. Especially when, if my PS3/PSP dies, I can still get the PSX games I downloaded. If my Wii dies, I will loss all the fucking games I've downloaded, which actually happened when I had to send my Wii it because Smash Bros Melee got stuck in the disc tray.
Luckily, It happened near launch - I only had maybe 2 or 3 VC games at that time, so it was no big loss, but even so.
Reading this article reminded me yet again of how little I have used my Wiimote. The second I realized that GC controllers plugged into the top, I bought one and a GC memory card, and quite soon after that, a wavebird. But all in all, this sounds like a cool idea.
@Madness: Ugh, don't remind me. Nintendo actually had to offer safety gloves for that game because people were injuring their hands. That's why there are *no* rotating joystick games in the series anymore.
@neoguyver:
If they ever released Perfect Dark for the virtual console we could buy this device, pay to download Perfect Dark, then play with an N64 control pad! It'd be like playing on an N64!
facepalm.
@NicolasCage:
Haha I was thinking that, never understood why they are different to our correctly coloured pal version.
@Gemini-Phoenix: Because what would be the point of Nintendo producing a controller accessory when they no longer make the controllers to connect to it? I'm sure some idiot would sue them for it.
shufflemoomin
@Greenman:
Would you prefer a $20 Classic Controller attachment, or a $30-50 Classic Controller standalone?
Needs more than 1 slot for each control really.
@GrimCW: Well said. Don't know why people on the internet always complain about the price of really inexpensive stuff; piracy culture, I guess.
oremlk
@n00b_pwner: No since I played Chrono Trigger for the DS recently. Loved it.
As for DKC2, I remember my brother playing it a lot.
@AXATAX: My older brothers had a NES and SNES, but I would just watch them. Both broke by the time I was six so I never really had a chance to play them :(.
@n00b_pwner: oh but paying for your games is bad then?
the VC is a lot cheaper than what some want for the carts in a lot of cases, and in any regard well worth it IMHO.
worth it to me, but maybe not to the emulator "it should be free!" crowd i suppose.
been playing my NES a lot lately and this will help me keep that oldschool feeling when playing VC titles. awesome!
Seeing a SNES pad without the colourful buttons is always a strange experience, like I've stepped into an alternate reality which is only slightly tweaked from my own.
@Tasunke: It's a shame N64 controllers weren't built to last.
@AXATAX: Indeed, I was born in '91 and I still have my SNES and N64.
@MellowJade:
You serious?
I was born in 1989 and had a NES, SNES and N64.
AXATAX
@esnelpla: Wasn't it the stupid shy guy wind-up that destroyed the joysticks? I remember I used to have blisters dead center in the middle of m hand after.
@Cronoking: You mean the one that isn't awkwardly shaped and surprisingly small controller that was released? I don't remember that one either.
I first was excited at the idea of this, till I realized I don't have any N64, SNES or NES controllers. The pain of realization.
@MellowJade: You missed out on Donkey Kong Country 2 and Chrono Trigger. :(
Nobody should ever go without playing at least one of those two SNES games.
@hamzahfukasurnameu+aintgotclearence: Find me a company that enjoys being screwed out of their rightful compensation. All of these companies have a rightful claim to some of the revenue Goldeneye would generate, because at some point or another they paid to get the right to get that compensation.

@n00b_pwner: The damn Nintendo64 one. I was too young to play the other Nintendo systems like SNES.
@n00b_pwner: Yea, I was born in 86 and kinda moved on from my Nintendo to a genesis around 92. Either Jade played was playing N64 or was a fairly retro gamer(im guessing due to parents who were either really cheap or just really awesome) in the late 90s.
@Nâ—Gage Croal: I didn't miss it, I just don't want another game that makes me destroy multiple controllers coming out because he tempts the fates.
@CasvalRemDeikun: you forgot to mention how anal two of three companies and M$ are about rights and pieces of the pie.
@death_to_midgets:
I like to play games because they're fun
how about that
@Greenman: although this in no way solves that problem, so who knows.
@Nâ—Gage Croal: I think he is talking about how Nintendo decided to save money by using a cable to plug your classic controller into a wii-mote rather than giving it its own wireless receiver.
I personally don't think it's a big deal but it is kinda nappy and I could understand some peoples beef.
Woot! Since this plugs into the GC controller ports, I'll finally be able to play OoT Master Quest on an N64 controller!
I hated trying to play it on the GC controller. That game was *built* for the N64 controller. The GC controller just absolutely sucks for it, especially with the mapping they chose.
Speaking if which, I wonder how the mapping will be done...
Tasunke
@Gemini-Phoenix: I know right? Its a shame they didnt come out with some kind of retro looking classic controller to play all those VC games with.
@n00b_pwner: Yeah, it does it damn expensive. I decided to finally do a run down of all the games I had on VC, and it came to about $150 worth of games. Only 4 were even N64 games.
@death_to_midgets: Become a Sony/Microsoft fanboy?
@neoguyver: Very, very, very unlikely. Rare is owned by Microsoft, which is why there was a PD 360 game. Goldeneye is even less likely as one company published it, one programmed it, and another owns the current rights to the James Bond franchise. It would be a huge legal debacle.
CasvalRemDeikun
ive lost alot of respect for nintendo recently, yes they make good systems but at what expense, yamauchi ran a brothel house before starting up nintendo and iwata isnt alot better.
I used to be a fan boy but now i have no leader god help me
death_to_midgets
@MellowJade: But WHICH one?!
Also, I was born in 1990, and was a Sega guy. I still want my Dreamcast damnit!
@frederic249: And then you just duct tape the thing to your DSi and pretend its a GB adapter
@n00b_pwner: I was born 1989.
And played Nintendo when I was eight years old.
That's pretty sweet. I was actually thinking about splicing my own N64-for-Wii controller, to work in a similar fashion to the Super Famicom Classic Controller from Club Nintendo. Guess now I don't need to, huh.
@bluem4gic:
I don't see any ripping off here...
@esnelpla: Its all because of the Bumper Ball game.
How i love it.
@MellowJade: What do you mean by 8? Born in the late 1970's, early 1980's or late 1980's?
@SketchyIndividual:
Missed the point.
The first Mario Party had crazy-stupid mini-games that involved you rotating the Control Stick REALLY, REALLY, REALLY fast to win. This wore out many a Control Stick.
Funny thing is... I could never win at those mini-games, no matter how fast I went. And that's why I never owned the first, and only the second.
Now I finally feel like I'm 8 years old again! :D
How upset would you be if those controller cords were really that short? I would NOT be happy.
Now they just have to come out with the Retro Adapter II to let you use Turbografx, Genesis, Master System, Commodore, MSX, and Neo Geo Controllers. Oh, and it lets you plug your arcade cabinet in so you can have the true retro experience. I know I'm not the only one waiting for that feature.
@bluem4gic: As long as the Wii and DS prints money
Wicked I can use my old controllers on the wii :)
Better than Nintendo's shitty wireless solution. Plug your classic controller in to your wiimote
FFS
For how long will the public be ripped off by Nintendo?
bluem4gic
@Pult|Ost - Dark Days Are Coming: Virtual Console can get a bit expensive over time. I personally use GameTap, and while it doesn't have any Nintendo games on it (excluding some of Konami's), I saw on a list there that $400 is the price to pay for all of the VC games also on GT when you can play it for free on that.
I don't know, but even GT isn't the best way to play classic games. Actually playing it on the console on a cruddy TV is the true way to experience it!
bring on GoldenEye, and Perfect Dark!
neoguyver
@Xuchilbara: No, it's cool, but it just isn't all that necessary. I really hate cords, and this one just adds to that. Plus, using the regular Wiimote works just fine for NES titles.
CasvalRemDeikun
They should've made a gigantic box full of holes and cables to put in your wii.
I've got 4 N64 controllers lying around and 2 snes controllers..
ah well, just to expensive for my taste...
rolfke
@Chozothebozo: Or a way to map Waggle controls to the joystick or even buttons.
I can't understand why Nintendo don't release one of these officially - Surely it's in their best interests and would show that they don't neglect their loyal customer base?
They've always been good to us via backwards compatability in regards to making their GameBoy software work on the Snes, GAmeCube, and subsequent models of GameBoy and DS, as well as making the Wii backwards compatible with GameCube discs - So why not do us all a favour and give us an official periperal to allow us to play with our classic controllers?
@esnelpla: No.
Just... just no, man. No.
@esnelpla: What's the point of playing Mario Party alone with this? Only one input per console >______>
The hard part will be finding a Nintendo 64 controller without a huge joystick dead zone. Damn you, Mario Party.
esnelpla
This is actually really cool imo, am I the only one that thinks so?
@Alternate, I cho-cho-chose the impossible: I don't live in Canada so I have nothing to worry about.
I hope.
@n00b_pwner:
even just now you can get a gba or sp for the same price than an adaptor would be....
frederic249
@n00b_pwner: But those affect sex crime rates!
@Chozothebozo: I read that as girl attachment.
I wish I had a girl attachment. Then I won't be so lonely so more...
Now all we need is a grill attachment and it will be perfect.
I wonder if there will be a GameBoy adapter on the DSi...
:D
Haha nice.
Must buy for Virtual Console.(All I ever use my Wii for)
@freedoms_stain:
You are in the minority on that opinion dude. The snes controller is considered by most to be the ultimate controller.
HowardC
@eurkos:
Because the American versions of consoles are always much more stylish, as opposed to the "skittles throwup" version everyone else got.
HowardC
@Atomsk88: *snaps fingers in applause*

@Madness: That, but more importantly, the Tug-o-war game when you were in the Bowser. Blistered hands, broken controllers, destroyed feelings - you name it.
I shall never forget because I beat it once.
ONCE.
The SNES controller brings memories of the worst instances of "gamers claw" I've ever encountered.
Viva the comfort of modern pads!
@esnelpla: ha ha, thanks for taking me back in time! my friends and i logged hundreds of hours on Goldeneye, but all it took was a few hours of Mario Party to destroy the analogue sticks
@Nâ—Gage Croal: I don't mind one bit that the classic controller plugs into the wiimote. It's cheaper that way, and then I can still use the wiimote for things the CC doesn't do, like when I need to go back to a menu and point at stuff.
That's great and all, but I'm waiting for something that will let me use my VC controller on old consoles. (SNES pads age terribly.)
@Xuchilbara: Nope. I'll probably be getting one of these as soon as I find my SNES controllers. I was looking at one a little while ago (also for $20) that only did the SNES controller, so this will be nice for the option.
@CasvalRemDeikun: It isn't necessary, but it's a fun way for old school gamers to enjoy those old school games. Besides, I personally think the SNES controller was one of the best ever.
cinemandrew
@GauntFaceKiller: Because bright colors throw us into fits of rage. It gets kind of ugly sometimes.
@XForce: Yeah I put a full roll of duct tape around my hand, but it still ripped through the whole thing and left me with a gigantic blister :P
Nintendo should've made an adapter since day one. Let the parents celebrate classic games the way they remember all while playing with their kids.
nerdBOY01
They keep making this stuff and I've never seen a cheap enough adapter for my computer!
@NicolasCage: It's a shame N64 controllers weren't build to be usable. Don't get me wrong, I loved the system, but what they hell were they thinking when they designed the controller?
L3G10N
@Atomsk88: Niiiice.
MMMMMMMMMMM MONSTER WANT!!!!!!
Tye-The-Czar
Officially awesome.
Benjo
@the7k: If you link your Wii with a My Nintendo account, it'll save a record of everything that you've downloaded.
Hope I can play Super Smash Bros Brawl using the N64 controller! :)
@PeterPlarker: Even so, the point remains that I can get a 700 MB ISO from PSN for less money that I can get a 16-Meg ROM file from the Wii Shop Channel.
Wow, those controllers are dirty. You'd think they'd use some brand new, or at least clean, controllers in their product images.
That being said, this is easily worth $20. I've seen adapters just for SNES go for that much.
TechRat
@esnelpla: I've still got 3 good ones. Only one fell to Mario Party.
RamsesLutherSmuckles
@oremlk:
Have you seen Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PS3, and 360? Take every game in that collection, and then apply VC prices to them, and you wind up paying hundreds of dollars instead of $30 or $40 or whatever it retails for now.
Danved
I just bought a new n64 on ebay because My little sister kept mine when i moved out.
Unfortunately she took the wii too.
But I would definitely get one of these, I hate[d] playing kirby with a gamecube controller.
I tip my hat to Komodo for showing more retro controller love than Ninty has done in recent releases. (Samurai Showdown WTF?)
I need this for Sin n' Punishment!
The Classic Controller sucks balls for N64 games, or pretty much all games!
Beerzerk
@esnelpla: The original Mario Party is probably the most terrible game ever. The rest were good.
cfive3
@CasvalRemDeikun: Thats not a fact i'm disputing, it's just that it boils down to us not gettin these classics, n thats just wrong man.
@Tasunke:
My main concern about this is whether or not it'll support rumble on the N64 controller.
That was one of the small, but still disappointing, downsides to playing any N64 games off of the Virtual Console - no rumble support via the crappy Classic Controller. I like to play my games with all of their features, Nintendo!
