people mock the chinese and japanese for an accent that is present (sometimes) when they speak English. yet i am willing to bet that those doing the mocking have an even smaller ability to speak their language.
besides, it isnt even that funny or even ammusing. im happy when some speaks English to me. it's out of politness and they dont have to do it. so what kind of person would i be if i laughed when they said 'Danrel-San'?

@MrWhitmore: Yeah, though in Cali, FOP would probably be more accurate (Fresh Off the Plane). A lot of Asian families moving to the US nowadays are more educated people coming here for tech jobs and opportunities, not refugees from Asia like the term FOB would probably more accurately imply.

Mocking someone for failing to try learning a language properly when they live there (usually the case in manga) makes more sense than mocking them because they were born learning a different language and can't pronounce yours.

I'm Chinese ethnically, but I speak perfect English (well...if Californian accents are perfect with all our run-ons) at the cost of having little to no ability to speak Chinese. When Chinese people mock my Chinese, I really just want to tell them to shut it. I don't mock their second language skills in English, why should they mock mine in Chinese?

That's my problem here: it's almost like prejudice because of where they were born, what they learned first. How is it funny? "Stupid Asians, they can't pronounce L!" I just don't see it.

Seems a bit odd. The Vietnam games came and went last-gen and it was too soon.

Six Days' publisher drops it because of negative buzz re: the subject matter.

Then Call of Duty, a game that has always been about at least capturing real battles and trying to respect the conflict turns into a game known for nazi and now imperial japanese zombies? No one says boo? It's just odd.

My GF doesnt have a wierd accent, nor do several of my other friends,but they have been learning English since they were about 4 or 5. on the other hand their parents rarely use it and when they do.... they have the accent.

@XxSnowblindxX: Actually, the ones who do the audible letter replacement most likely were natural speakers of japanese for the majority of their lives and learned english. I have a friend who is japanese and mongolian and he speaks very little japanese, and his english is pretty poor too. it's a mixture of english slang and his poor japanese accent.

No, the engine is identical. It even says it on the box. There is no fundamental flaw in the multiplayer, it's all about preference. I prefer modern weapons and locales because I've played the WWII scene to death (no pun intended) so CoD:MW is the natural choice.

Another thing I don't like is being able to modify weapons in World at War that it's not actually possible to modify with at the time. I know I'm being a little picky at this point, but an ACOG scope was not around in WWII. If you want the world war 2 setting you must keep everything accurate. You can't have it both ways, Treyarch!

Enough with the zombies. It's fun but there's far too many ways to enjoy zombie killing as is. A tad bit of originality wouldn't kill these companies.

@Madeira: Hardly any of the guns in WaW are any funny to use. I kinda like the Thompson and the STG, but thats about it. In CoD4 I can use any of the following: M16, M14, M4, G36C, M1014, RPD (personal favourite), MP5, P90, AK47, Mini Uzi and M40A3. All of them are fun to use. Thats the major difference for me anyway.

@Madeira: The concept of COD:WAW is the same as COD4 but there are no where near the same.

The only similarity is the idea of Perks & the Matchmaking.

Otherwise the whole engine & feel is different.

Plus the most obvious difference.

@LllusionX has a fanboy clone!!: Ugh, I hate the "r" to "l" thing, because people use it for EVERY type of Asian FOB (Mandarin has "r" sounds and "l" sounds, so they don't really mix them up). I've met FOBs from most South-East Asian countries, and they all have unique accents. Same with the "I love you long time" crap.

Sorry, somewhat off topic. I always wondered if the Japanese were rooting for the Allies in all these WWII games, since the Allies are usually portrayed as the protagonists. I guess there are games where you fight Americans (Age of Empires and Rise of Nations...kinda), but still...these WWII games are much more focused on killing Germans, Italians, and Japanese.

Germans can back off it because now they hate Nazis too, but the Japanese? I don't know what they're thinking.

@karl_hungus: I'm in the same boat as you, bought the first pack primarily for the new zombie map, figured I would play the regular multi a bit more.

And a few months afterwards and still haven't touched the multi at all and the only map from that pack that gets use is the zombie one.

I have money to burn, but frankly I complain enough that map packs don't have more than 3 in them for most games, and here I am, a hypocrite, when I bought the last pack just for one map, doubt it'll happen again.

i hate that they make you pay for the other maps. All anyone wants is the zombie stuff online for this game is not that great, just give me more zombies!!!

I hope Infinity Ward does something like Treyarch did. Not necessarily a zombie mode, but a mode where you can fight together with teammates against AI opponents (like Horde mode in Gears 2).
Hell I hope IW puts all the multilayer types Treyarch did plus more. Modern Warfare was fun, but I missed coop and online coop.

I love me some Zombie movies, and zombie themed games. But I have to say, I really don't get this random injection of zombies in un-zombie like games. Its kinda of stupid.

I did not like the last three DLC mp maps. The zombie map was good though.

I suggest the new zombie map start things quicker though. The first 5-10 minutes are always boring because there are too few zombies. But then once zombies do start flooding in they also happen to withstand 5 times the bullets. I'm just asking for a middle ground here. A window of waves where the zombies are still easy to kill but come flooding in by the hordes. It's rewarding because one shotgun blasts takes down 3 of them, and it's challenging because there are 30 of them.

@Madeira: On the contrary, there are quite a few differences. Some of the major ones:

1. More recoil/shot spread in W@W. Realistic, maybe, but compared to W@W, CoD4's weapons shot like lasers.

1a. W@W ends up being dominated by submachine guns with lots and lots of spray and pray.

2. Bolt action and single shot rifles are not really powerful enough (especially the bolt actions). There just isn't a reason other than ranking up to use them.

2b. W@W ends up beign dominated by submachine guns because the bolt actions are too hard to use well. (Which doesn't mean there aren't some ppl that kick ass with them).

3. Maps with lots of rubble, uneven ground, bridges, etc etc seem like a great idea. The reality is there is TONS of crap you get caught on in W@W... including doorways.

4. Dogs and Arty work in significantly different ways than Airstrikes and Helos.

5. Weapon attachments in W@W are just stupid. It has been mentioned already, but reflex sights, ACOG, etc just didn't exsist (or weren't practical enough for normal units to use). The same goes for Tabun gas and using Flares... they just weren't used in the same fashion that modern spec ops use flashbangs.

6. Ammo loadout is ridiculously lower on a per clip basis. That mixed with the inaccuracy of the guns, you spend a LOT more time reloading in W@W.

... and there's plenty more, but just those things, if you think about their individual impact, alter the gameplay dramatically.

And that leads to stereotyping that I have to deal with as an Asian American who isn't Japanese, hence, I'm defensive about this stuff.

And as I mentioned, Mandarin Chinese has L's and R's, and they're not going to mix them up. More likely to mix up he/she/it, since they're one word in Chinese. Personally, my parents have non-typical Asian accents, but they also speak and write around 7 languages/dialects each, so it makes sense to me not to make fun of people who are bilingual or better.

DLC is one area in which Treyarch is definitely better than Infinity Ward, but that's about it I'm afraid. Not to put down their games of course...I loved WaW.

It's amazing how large COD4 is and yet they still only have one map pack after two years. I quit that game because I'm sick of the same maps. Halo 3 has 3 out and this one has two. What's up Infinity Ward? You're supposed to be the online war FPS leader here.

@moehannes: As this is a gaming blog, when a comment is disemvoweled for "classless humor", it usually involves text like "omg! late!! red dis on IGN 5 years ago!!!" or "lol, RROD" or "PS3,GAMES? LOLOLOLOLOL" or "time to dust off my wii, again...." or the infamous, "FIRST!!"

When the sentient entities that review and look at our comments to check for good/bad/disemvowel worthy comments, i would think they'd have(since they always use them in their well written articles) a sense of humor. then comes you and others who apparently get "butthurt" from a joke that could be found offensive by someone to whom it would apply, which probably isnt you.

You could say i have fallen to a new low, or a variation of the same thing, but in the end, i made a joke, some people laughed, some didnt. such is the way that humor works. in such a respect, humor could be viewed as an artwork in which worth and beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and to whom it is being beheld is granted right to criticise. They may do as they pleae, but if censorship belongs anywhere, it would be /b/. look there if you want some racist comments.

I was in no way implying that. True, i was mocking, but who could really get offended by mocking speech, in text, on a blog, on the internet? A lawyer, that's who. I was simply making fun of how it truly is. I didnt say they couldnt pronounce L's, because they can. In most asian languages, such as japanese and probably chinese, L is just pronounced with the R sound, and vice versa(in some phrases). Stereotypyes didnt just come out of thin air, they were based on some fact, however overly exaggerated they may be, they have their place. Where that place is is for the user to decide, but there will always be people who are offended by it. Just as there are always people who do not specifically fit said stereotype. I for one am pretty lenient on issues of racial stereotypes and whatnot, because in my honest opinion, being offended by it is the only thing keeping it alive.
