Xbox 360 Gets Crackdown Theme
If your Xbox 360 is looking a little drab – and you’re not adverse to spending money on tarting it up – then hey, this new Crackdown theme might be just the thing you’re into.
It’ll be available for download tomorrow, and will cost you 240 MS Points (USD$3). A ridiculous price for a theme, yes, but hey, some people really like Crackdown. A lot.

Shermi
Oh shhhiiit! Man I hope that means they're working on Crackdown 2!!! Sumthin' sumthin' at E3- please!!
For a game that won't let you install to HDD, this Theme is over-expensive.
Only 8 friends? Ouch.
I really liked Crackdown... two years ago when I bought it and play-raped it (plaped it, if you will). Maybe I would have bought it then, but without a confirmed sequel to stir interest in the title, this just isn't worth it.
@Spaceboy: Bah. I didn't see your comment until after I made mine.
Did anybody else chuckle at the fact that in the first picture there is a girl named "Hungryclam"?
Maybe I've just got a dirty mind.
@shenanigans123:
Microsoft has gone out of their way to stop a Crackdown sequel. They attributed its success solely to the inclusion of the Halo 3 demo. So sad. Also, the fact that Realtime Worlds abandoned the IP for another ridiculous MMO (in the already crowded genre) just further squelched any hope for a sequel.
Maybe they'll revive it for the next generation.
@Pombar:
I love Crackdown too. Probably more than most...but I have no interest in owning a Crackdown theme.
I'm suspicious that there's an upcoming reveal of details for Crackdown 2. Most other themes would be released with little fanfare but I see this on kotaku and Major Nelson bigging it up on twitter too. Watch this Crackdown space I reckon...
NunianVonFuch
@Spaceboy: thinking the same thing lol.
lordrox
@freemonk: The game is over two years old... not the theme. There seems to be a disconnect here O_o
I can see my friends standing in front of Fucko the Clown?
I swore I'd never pay for one of these things, but that actually looks really nice.
Mentalist-air
@GOLD5:
I spend all my space bucks at the space Olympics.
@Michael Forsberg:
Yeah, because the XMB totally works for something like the PS3, right? Seriously, that XMB is waaayyy too freaking complicated for the average user. All of the tweaking features are fine, but when they don't explain what they actually do, I start to get a little annoyed. Don't even get me started on what a double upconvert means.
Personally I think the 360s interface is great. Lots of ads, sure, but that doesn't mean it's hard to navigate or find your content. My biggest complaint would be that the friends list takes a while to load now, but I just fall back on the brilliant Guide feature now.
@Spaceboy: Yeah, that's my ex. She was too much . . . clam, for just one man.
InvaderPhlegm
@Andsy:
Damn that last agility orb! Damn you to hell! I've been at 499 for over a year. I've pretty much just given up hope on that one...
It seems a bit unusual to just now launch a premium theme for a game that most of us played somewhere near the time of the 360s launch, but considering that it cost them essentially nothing to make, I guess it's not really that bad of an idea.
@Soyerzzz: I dunno you could kind of make your own fun with crackdown. For example a friend and i blew up a bunch of cars then arranged them to look like soccer goals and proceeded to play ragdoll soccer. Great fun.
houkah
Hungry Clam is a hilarious name for a female avatar.
Spaceboy
@cwatson71: I'm thinking my next premium theme will probably be ghostbusters, there will inevitably be one.
SoulSiphon
Crackdown doesn't even trade in for three dollars anymore...
@Michael Forsberg: wha? dude, I don't get people like you what makes it a mess, the fact that if can read, you can find whatever you need? or maybe it's the multiple paths you can take to get to whatever you want? seriously, it took no time at all for mst people to get used to the new menus, and if you pay attention to what you are doing instead of wanting everything to magically appear in front of you via mind meld, it takes little to no effort to navigate.

@ekkobi: normally i'd be way against paying for a theme, but i know i have about that much xbox live points just sitting around, doing nothing, collecting dust.... and yeah, i really love crackdown
uppitycracker
@Dr4gon: value is in the eye of the beholder. what you see as over priced.... the next gamer may see as a steal of a deal.
ShaggyB
@interim is known is aewyn in other circles: I know that guy
ShaggyB
My phone just pinged the agility orb sound...
anyway, I was crackdown obsessed, but i doubt i'll buy this.
E3 will be showing a crackdown sequel though. noice.
@CoatedTrout:
PSN just gave us ragdoll kung fu for free xD. ide love to play crackdown if i had an xbox :(
Edward Vella
@interim is known is aewyn in other circles: So its confirmed then!!!
The_nub_next_door
@InvaderPhlegm: I've been holding out for a Fallout 3 premium theme too. Can't believe it hasn't happened yet.
cwatson71
Mentioning.
When the frak are we going to get some Fallout 3 love in premium theme form?!
InvaderPhlegm
I'd buy this in a heartbeat, if the theme did a better job of making the 360 dash look like Pacific City. The Ninja Blade theme does a pretty good job of that.
Anyway, the point is moot, as I just spent my last space buck purchasing Fallout 3: Broken Steel.
Liberty Prime, is da shiznitz.
InvaderPhlegm
@Dr4gon: I'll probably buy this theme. I don't see the problem with the price.
It's less than a cup of coffee, and is going to last longer.
@millsie1990: We have to pay for it, because people WILL pay for it. If no-one bought it we could get to either free or a reasonable amount (50 -75 points?)
Dr4gon
@Michael Forsberg: I have to pretty much totally disagree.
I really want to play Crackdown, but my Bothersome brother is a D***. I bought the game for him, I should be able to play a little, you
Sandbox games are awesome.
@freemonk: Our good friends microsoft don't do that sort of thing anymore...
@Michael Forsberg: YOUR FACE! is one big mess -.-
@millsie1990: So you only buy stuff to show it off?
And yes that would be amazing.
@Pombar:
T-Shirts work, too. I agree with you on your feelings about Crackdown. This was one of those games that I loved to play with old friends before we all graduated from college. Good times, good times.
I'd prefer a sequel, but realtime seems pretty busy with A.P.B.
I haven't wasted my cash on themes since before the NXE update. I need those space bucks for Rock Band tunes.
@Michael Forsberg: one big beautiful mess
@8-Bit-Soul Responds To Rip-Off Theme, Seems Pleased.
@moonrad: I heard from a friend that has a friend working at Real Time Worlds that a friend inside Real Time Worlds said that his friend in Real Time Worlds management said that the development team said that a sequel to Crackdown might be in the works.
360s interface is one big mess -.-
Michael Forsberg
@Pombar: Yeah It sure was fun to see who would kill each other first with a rocket launcher. Its like playing GTA on the moon. But with new multiplayer i want competitive ALONG with Co-op
seems pleased
8-Bit-Soul
@Pombar: ahem, "full" use.
@Soyerzzz: I had unbelievable fun with the two player "co-op". The later additions like Rocket Tag were also great fun. But yeah, more multiplayer options would only make things even better.
Though with all those abilities they gave you, I'm surprised the game didn't throw any equivalent challenges at you. Giant robots, monsters, aliens, etc would all been good fun and might have provided space to make fully use of your abilities.
@ltdedloser: Yes, you could buy the game, or... with this theme, pretend you have the game and like it too.
@Kobun:
Yup, Real Time Worlds are currently working on All Points Bulletin (APB), but I have heard several rumours relating to the development of Crackdown 2. *Fingers Crossed*
moonrad
I hope this means signs that another Crackdown is in the works. It was probably the best open world game of this console generation so far (mainly because of how fun it was to jump around and break cars).
EtisArap
That's retarded. I love me some crackdown, 100%'ing that badboy. But I'm not gunna spend 240 points on just some pretty pictures.
Giving some hints here, eh Microsoft? Well just give me some decent multiplayer this time and I will instantly be in :)
I love Crackdown. I love it a lot. But if I was obsessed enough to be tempted to dish out money to make my 360 browsing just that little bit more like playing Crackdown, I'd buy a T-Shirt or something.
Gahhh. That's almost as expensive as if I wanted to buy the game!
@shenanigans123: There better be a sequel in the works, but wouldn't that mean a different team is working on it then? I recall reading the original developer was busy with another project.
WTF? They are charging for this!? The game is over 2 years old!
It's about time the reduced or gave away for free the DLC that was made available a long time ago.
freemonk
So why do we have to pay for this its not as if we get to show it off to anyone. Your the only one that sees it ah well I can only hope they make gears of war costumes soon
Hopefully this means there's a Crackdown sequel in the works.
@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): Maybe freemonk "really" meant "$3 for a theme of a two yearold game is preposterous!" :)
I only like free themes. Think of it as advertising or suggestive. I really want a theme-devkit.
SigmundTheSeaMonster
Im definitely not buying this, but i have to admit, the theme does look really cool. It seems kinda odd to release a premium theme to a 2 year old game, but maybe this is Microsoft's way of saying Crackdown 2 is in development?!?
Moar_pr0nz
@sirdesmond: You mean around the middle of 2007, nearly 18 months later?
gordiehowe5
funny that they are just coming out with this now?? but I have been playing the crap out of it for the last week.
@heybtbm: Microsoft has done nothing to stop a Crackdown sequel. They simply assert their ownership over it. AND they never said anything about it's sales being "solely" successful because of Halo 3.
[www.gamasutra.com]
[www.wired.com]
That second interview is a little old, but I think it's pretty clear that they hold Crackdown in a fairly high regard. I can't imagine that they would release this console skin so much later than the release of the game without trying to at lease re-peek some interest in the franchise.
@b-radicate:
You're missing out, trust me. And theres no confirmed sequel from Realtime Worlds but some employees just left that developers and there were strong rumors of them working on part 2 of Crackdown strictly for Microsoft.
I really like Crackdown a great deal, bought the DLC but I won't be buying themes anymore. They are a waste of money and most of them should be free.
Been looking for a new theme and love me some Crackdown.
Lnin0
mmm nope. But I did bought the banjo tooie one, just for the lols and the ahh I remember that!
@interim is known is aewyn in other circles: Yo dawg, I heard you like friends
PuFF-Studios
@Big_Mike: you weren't alone.
@Spaceboy: I could use more friends like hungryclam. Just saying....
NarcoSleepy
@shenanigans123: Duh, why do you think they release a theme for a 3 year old game right before E3 ;).
Fyro
i've bought crackdown 3 times.
once when it was released (mainly to get the beta - but i got one from bungie anyway), then middle of last year a few months after i traded the first one in. then i got it towards the end of last year.
why have i bought it three times?
because unlike many games being released its just open ended fun! climbing tall buildings, blowing shit up, racing around streets, seeing how many people you can attach to a truck with a harpoon ... brilliant.
i'm going to buy it for a 4th time now.
illocon
@Gyaruson: It's normally 240/250 points for any premium theme. A ruddy rip-off, if you ask me.
So I guess I'm not the only one who refuses to pay for themes and finds that a first class fleecing.
I don't know why people are so against paying money for a theme for their 360s. It's like, what? Three bucks? For a bit of style and customization? Yet people get so upset about it.
Personally, I love the dashboard themes, and had I ever played Crackdown, I'd consider picking this up. It looks really nice.
@Spaceboy: noticed that, and was checking the comments to make sure somebody else had lol
@PuFF-Studios: Yo dawg I heard you like friends so I put some friends in your friends so you can hang out while you're hanging out.
Interim
@Gyaruson: I'm also at 499 and it's my last achievement for the game. Damn, time to print out a map and start a grid based sweep of the city.
I always thought these themes were kind of silly.
but... give me a Team Fortress 2 theme and I would gladly put down some cold, hard kiz-ash for that!
