@Vanilla_Ninja: That's good, but certainly hearing it spoken can help comprehension. I don't live in Japan and don't know many people who speak it, so aside from chatting with people on the Internet, 'tis my best option.
@Derek Rumpler:
Hmm I'm trying to learn Japanese the uh.."old fashioned way?" I watch fansubs before stuff gets licensed so obviously I don't mind subs but dubs are more convenient if they are available
What the hell is a "LA" button? During the battle scenes in the left there's a button called LA in there. On the 360 demo in there there was a "LB" button regarding the 360's Left Bumper button.
But this trailer is running on a PS3 so I expected an "L1" button. What is a LA?
@Akibake:
Quicktime works effortlessly, on G4TV's site. Hit the text link on the video above and choose Quicktime, if you're having trouble with this Flash embedded video, meh.
Akibake
Why can't I see the video? It never loads. I can see the stupid Flash advertisements, but not the video. That's just great.
Akibake
That trailer left a Chrono Trigger song stuck in my head...

@Orihalcon: Wow, talk about delusional... This is probably the best voice acting heard in a JRPG this gen, along with Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia.
@Hunter217: "childish teen voice"? How old is Lightning supposed to be, anyway? Considering it's a JRPG, I doubt she's much older than a teen, so her voice is fine. It's not like she's supposed to be 40+. To be honest, I thought Maaya Sakamoto's voice as Lightning sounded to stereotypically "mature" and it just doesn't seem right. In fact, the only character with a decent voice (from what we've heard) is Snow, in my opinion, and even his isn't anything I'd miss.
@trunkenmath: I'm glad to see the ring based propulsion systems from the gardens come back. I always thought that was really cool.
whatevername
@brian ashcraft: Did you guys recently update what flash you are using on this site? It doesn't look right on my work computer anymore, the embedded videos that is.
ion1626
Aw man, I would totally bang that skimpy chick with the skirt and the one with the glasses.
ok but srsly.
the male playable characters I've seen so far look and seem really lame. Just some fag wearing a bandana, and some frobro (who is kinda cool I guess).
Not nearly as cool as Balthier or Basch from FFXII.
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: Retards will say it is because it's Japanese. Purists will say because it's Japanese. People with any sense of hearing will say because it seems to flow better and sound right.
Ashton
@Orihalcon: As long as it's better than FFX, I have no qualms.
@Vanilla_Ninja: I watch my anime in Japanese, for the simple fact that I want to learn the language. Eventually, I make the neural connections with what is being said on the screen and what is at the bottom.
As for videogames, not so much, because nine times out of ten, there's audio that isn't translated nor are the subtitles always translated CORRECTLY (sometimes relying on the dub's localization instead of an original script). Although I will admit to preferring the Japanese voice when I hear them primarily most of the time.
But I don't knock people if they watch their dubs in English. As far as I'm concerned, at least they're watching it and that's a good thing in my eyes.
@Derek Rumpler: And the reason I do say that is because I'm sure eventually, others will draw that connection.
It was kind of a bad name choice. Sahz wasn't good, but I don't think Sudz is any better, to be honest.
@TitillatedOcelot: I'm not trying to add to another racial stereotype, but when I think of Sudz and that afro, I think of Bubba and a bubble bath.
*shudders*
@Akisazame:
You know, I agree. It's really not all that bad. There's DEFINITELY been worse-- Baten Kaitos, anyone?
I also like the original Japanese voices, but just because they're original doesn't mean they're always better.
@dagamer34: I'm quite aware of the appeal of the original voices. I'm just saying that people shouldn't completely discount English voices, either. Final Fantasy XII proved that the English voice cast can be excellent on its own. I'm wondering if people have forgotten that already.
You honestly think your incessant whining on some gaming website will change anything? Riiiiight.
Look,
The English voice acting ISN'T TERRIBLE, just not as good as the Japanese. It's alright, but worse by comparison.
In my opinion Snow's voice is off and doesn't embody his character properly *make it deeper*. Oerba's voice over at the beginning had me cringing a bit. I don't know if some strange accent was being forced out or something. However, the fact that it isn't at the same level is enough to warrant dual audio. We should have a choice.
Siye
The voice acting is worse than Final Fantasy XII it seems but it may be better than Final Fantasy X, (There were SOME good voices in that.)
@BubbleF**kingBuddy:
the japanese voices are MUCH better than this crap , i love how mature lightning voice is in Japanese compared to the childish teen voice of US lightning.
@Akisazame:
It's a personal preference. If we don't complain, it will never get in there. And despite what you think that voices are just voices, it's always better to enjoy the original work with as little changes as possible, like voices.
You cant really compare Jap Voice actors with american ones its tottaly diferent , and dont say the japs one sukcs cause it Has VERY good seiyuus , Like Maaya Sakamoto Being Lightning , and yes im a fan of her and i want to play the game with subs «« ! either that or yes i will import and play it Jap XD !
Besides after playind the Demo i got atached to Shaz voice 2 soooooo ..... pls give us choice squeenix!
Lyh Scully
@WingsOfDaidalos: Content wise, I'm sure they'll be the same, but whenever you port games from one console to the other you're prone to technical problems. Since FFXIII was developed for PS3 and is being ported to 360 for the NA release, there could be technical differences.
They're quite different machines. Just like the 360 ports to PS3 that are buggier and run worse on the PS3 as a result, could get the same thing here :O
That said, I have both, so doesn't make much difference to me if it's exclusive or not :)
wtf this video isnt playing for me? it didnt play for me late last nite as well.even on gametrailers. shit sucks!!
starwave
@xxAlucarDraculax: ... or the real night sky
trunkenmath
@Orihalcon: Just to be fair, is it really dubbing if they change the game to have matching lips and buy a new voice acting cast? I thought dubbing was just imposing one language on an other.
trunkenmath
@Rowd: "zu" is used all the time for "ds" (e.g., "Richards" is "Richaazu"). They're nothing technically wrong with saying it "Sudz".
urutapu
@Orihalcon: Max Payne (all voices), Full Throttle (all voices), Monkey Island 3 (all voices), FFX Main char Tidus are all great examples of great voice acting.
As for
Lightings voice, The Evil guys voices,
happy girls voice, girl with glasses and slightly curls in hair's voice all weren't very convincing
the guy with orange hair ala mohawk has the most
convincing and interesting voice in the whole trailer,
the little boy with white hair had really great a voice too.
I also think Snow's voice was fully acceptable
same with afroman, fully acceptable
"I'm not just gonna stand here and wait around" by snow sounded convincing
I'm definatly going to play through the game once with each voice setting
@yutaro: You gotta be kidding me, right? There were a few hiccups from Sahz and Lightning, but overall it was astoundingly good for how early they're into it. Gadeau's "You're supposed to be the hero" made me nerdgasm with it's heartfelt inflection.
Rowd
@TitillatedOcelot: They released scans that showed romanizations of the characters' names (correcting Vanille from the phonetically-correct Vanilla), and his name was definitely Sahz. That makes me sad. :( Sahz was smooooooth, Sudz is... meh.
Rowd
@skik08: "all Sony Fanboys already convinced themselves the ps3 version will be the best."
There, fixed it for you.
It's gonna be the same game. Just accept it's not exclusive, please.
WingsOfDaidalos
@Orihalcon: Agreed, that was terrible. The dialog was pretty trite. "Time to jump!"
@yutaro: Or how about you stop being such an idiot. The voice acting is fine. No it's not blockbuster movie level voice acting, but neither is tha Japanese dub. The dub is very GOOD.
@Akisazame: I want your children.
Voices are very nice for a dub. I have no idea why people are complaining, but I would prefer the Japanese voices though as that's what I had gotten used to with the demo, but so far there isn't anything terrible about the VAs from the English dub.
@Äipic: I have to disagree with that logic, because basing on how the characters are behaving, what they are speaking (subtitles!), what is happening in the background/plot i am expecting them to speak their lines in a certain way. I am expecting them to sound frightened/excited/disoriented/insert_emotion_here. I also expect a character to have a voice matching their posture.
And often localized voices just don't deliver in this aspect, because quality when it comes to localization cost a lot. That is why people bitch about them. That is why the original sounds/reads better.
Another thing is - if you hear the original first you attach a voice to the original character, and hearing the same character speak with a different voice later feels off.
It's true that often people exaggerate, but thats how the world is :) Personally - im quite ok with the english voices. However this is often not so, and i usually prefer the original with subtitles to dubbing be it games or movies.
Cue complaints about voice acting. Man, if people are whining this much about FFXIII's voices from a few lines, I can only imagine what the response to the Dissidia video with a few characters saying one line will be.
Seriously, guys, get over yourselves. I love subs as much as any "anime purist," but I've learned long ago to give video game dubs a chance. You don't like the voices? Have fun importing the Japanese version. They aren't even bad, so I'm honestly wondering what people are whining about.
Lightning sounds fine, Snow sounds fine, Sazh sounds fine. What is there to complain about, exactly? If you think Lightning's voice sounds monotonous, what were you expecting? Did you want a super high pitched genki girl voice or something? Have you guys even been paying attention to what kind of character she is? Yeesh. It's nice to see at least that Sazh's voice actor is putting some emotion into his lines. Or maybe that's a bad thing, too.
@yutaro:
No this may not be the best dub ever (the video won't even load for me I don't know) but there's this whole legion of people who despise english dubs for simply not being in the holy language (that would be japanese) and these people have been complaining about the dub since the announcement of FFXIII
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: How about just accept the fact it sounds like shit? You don't need to be an expert in the field to hear how awful the voices in this dub are. There are good dubs and then there are bad dubs. This is not the former.
yutaro
@Vanilla_Ninja: Good point.
I mean I don't have a problem if people prefer to listen to the Japanese dub, that's fine if they have a thing for Japanese voices.
But to slate the English voices is just pants on head retarded.
it won't load for me
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ:
They don't want englsh at all. These are the same people who can't actually tell when a japanese dub sucks though
Video not working for me
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ:
This, this and this.
Radz
@moehannes: Haha true =]
Suppose people will always find something to moan about.
@Orihalcon: I have to respectfully disagree, whilst it certainly doesn't compare to that in FFXII, it's still pretty kickass voice acting.
A little too...American for my taste though.
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: Because most people were moaning about the controls.
moehannes
@bobtheduck:
Very true.
@Orihalcon:
Well if the BD version gets Japanes voices too... no problem.
@Äipic: That's what I've always said. 'How do you know it's better if you don't speak Japanese?' I'm glad at least somebody else understands. I usually get attacked y rabbid Japanese dub purists when I post stuff like that.
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: That's because Japanese isn't their native language. Of course it will sound better, because you don't know what they're saying or how certain things are supposed to sound.
@PsycheE: What the hell is it with people and dubs!?
Isn't it funny how people only complain when it's a dub?
It just seems like people are never happy with the dub, no matter how good it sounds. Do you want the Japanese cast speaking the lines in English or something?
@Orihalcon: I love how people always find a problem with the voice acting when it's dubbed, but not when it's the original track.
I didn't hear anyone moan about Resi 5's voice acting for example. And this is on par with that, if not better.
@dirtface: just click the Game Trailers link in the lower right corner. It wouldn't load for me here.
@Dean Seirafi: lol yea everyone already knows the ps3 version will be the best
@bobtheduck: Make mine Blu-Ray! And then make mine Japanese with English subtitles! And be quick about it!
Can't see shit, captain.
Movie didn't load for me an hour ago, and it still didn't load when I tried again now.
dirtface
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: It's a pretty decent phoenetic Japanese-to-English choice, I think. It may even be what the Japanese were trying for when they named him.
@drizzt_rocks: Better yet, Street Fighter IV it and offer audio settings for each individual character. I have to admit I totally cheered when I heard Sazh's voice.
Ladi
@UltimateIdiot - Imperfection at Best: Haha I read that as "FF 50 + 13 = 63 ... wait thats not right"
drizzt_rocks
Jap dub with eng subtitles please.
drizzt_rocks
dual audio on PS3 version, Squ'eenix... You have no reason NOT to. None.
@PsycheE: I hope so but to be honest, it was better than I thought.
@Satki: But with PS3, Dean here can get FFVXIII later on. And it has bluray.
@Dean Seirafi: Step 1: get a job Step 2: Get the money Step 3: buy the PS3
trunkenmath
@Orihalcon: Sounds better than the Japanese voices, at least.
BubbleF**kingBuddy
Will there be an option for dual audio?, the protagonist's voice is abysmal, defines monotony.
PsycheE
@Dean Seirafi: It's 360 too...
Satki
Wow and I thought playing the demo was fun this is just awe inspiring, look at the beauty of the night sky! you can tell they were inspired by the night sky in nibelheim
xxAlucarDraculax
@Orihalcon: Hate to disagree, I found Lighting and Snow's voice a disappointment. However, I was mildly impressed by the man with the silver-hair, "...they must be - eliminated." Hopefully, with more footage, we'll be able to make a much more evident conclusion.
@Orihalcon: Oh get off it. It's just as good as any other voice acting done recently in gaming, except for that found in FF12 or Lost Odyssey. And they actually synced the mouths to the voice acting, which is more than I can say for 99% of all games.
That was orgasmic. Damn I can't wait for this game! Must get myself a PS3, somehow. -_-
Dean Seirafi
Oh dear....voice acting fail....
I know there are much worse, *cough* Infinite Undiscovery *cough*, but some of the stresses on the voice acting here sounded really forced....I hope that's not what will be expected in the final product.
Is Sahz's new name really "Sudz"?
BubbleF**kingBuddy
Can't wait. I love the techy FF. 8 being my favorite.
trunkenmath
VERY impressive. It is so amazingly polished.
Looks like another giant cheese sandwich. Why am I afraid Square is never going to produce anything 1/10th as good as the plot in Vagrant Story?
@Alex_Mexico: Left Analog.
@Hraesvelgr: True that. Not on this gen but still current, some other dub games I really enjoyed were the Persona 3 and Persona 4 for the PS2. Where with Persona 4, I actually preferred the English over the Japanese. I also want to see Vesperia on PS3 cause of more Yuri (absolutely love the English ver).
@Orihalcon: What? C'mon, that's was pretty damn excellent than with other games I've seen done. And forced? Okay, yeah you can sorta hear that feeling, but it's very well done and decent enough to make for a believable dub.
