Mario Galaxy 2 Screens And Trailer

Mario is back and ready to circle around planets in spaaaaaaaaaace.

As we posted previously, Miyamoto said that the original plan was to “essentially create new variations of the worlds in Super Mario Galaxy.” But, over time, the developers have had so many ideas that Miyamoto estimates that 90% of the game’s levels are all new. The rest, he said, are levels from the original Mario Galaxy with different objectives.

The controls haven’t changed, but Mario’s been given new abilities via the addition of Yoshi and a drill item. Miyamoto also told Kotaku that “there’s something that might be kind of a little bit ghost like but still a little different.”

Screens on the link.

    @NeoAkira: the original mario themes aren't good game music -- they are great game music.

  • tim rogers

    @SteveZim1017: just because it's a music for a limited amount of time doesn't mean it has to sound like the music playing on the radio the night you get fired from your job as a night security guard at a cardboard box factory, as you speed down the highway on your way home, to discover that your refrigerator is packed full of cockroaches :-/

    @Rotmm: The hero theme to SMG makes me cry almost every time I hear it, and it's refrain here is no different.

    @Amnesiac85: Yeah, I beat half of it or something. 66 stars in 16 hours over the course of a five day rental. I really feel like there's a hole in my heart for having not completed the entire game.
    It was so much fun, probably my favorite 3D Mario game. Something new in every planet really kept the feeling up too.
    Bowser was far too easy, and some of the levels were cake, but there were tons that had me going for a while. I think this was geared towards people who are new to the series and people who are veterans, having the really tough levels but still keeping the main 60 easy enough for a new guy to beat it.

    @FriedConsole: Oh God, that stage...I'm 24, and that's the one time in all my gaming history I've thrown a controller. I'd never seen anyone else mention that stage, I was thinking somehow I was the only person in the entire world who got just completely owned by it.

  • Twik63

    @Dolph1: must play high should be on the cover. you can't possibly get nauseous that way.

  • Placentasaurus

    Looks like a fantastic expansion. I still need to play the first one though. Maybe I'll see if I can borrow my friend's wii.

  • nzV

    Seeing Mario ride Yoshi is so weird nowadays.

    @Lessthan_tom: A thousand times this.

    I loved the game, but it was far from perfect. Super Mario 64 was better.

    @TiKiMaN1: Not everyone is a completionist.

  • Ickbread

    @Sirusjr: Galaxy 2 seems like it's just the second half of Mario Galaxy, following up the same difficulty curve as if they were a single game. Like Lost Levels!

  • joshfigueroa

    I don't get the appeal of this game whatsoever and it doesn't make any sense. Its like some lame acid trip taking steps backwards. Honestly I would love to see Mario rendered in the Unreal Engine 3 and thats not to say I want him toting a chaing gun with a 5oclock shadow while smoking a huge cigar. It only means I want everything rendered in hyper detail with the proportions and art style of the first few games intact. Then I want to see that in a 3-D world that makes actual sense as he jumps around 3-d recreations of environments we saw in Super Mario Brothers 1 & 2. Is it so hard for Nintendo to understand this concept? This will make Mario and his cast appealing to new audiences while bringing back the hardcore. Right now, only one game on the Wii appeals to me and thats Team Ninjas Metroid.

  • pinoy78

    Hell yeah Yoshi!

    Needs some better powerups though. I miss the Racoon suit.

    Will the Koopa Kids return?

    The music just gets insanely good at 1:23.

  • Amnesiac85

  • Mit

    @el_gordo: I also had an easy run through Mario Galaxy in getting every single star (took me about two weeks of an average amount of play every day). For those saying the difficulty was fine and hard enough, I think it should only be that way for you to get enough stars to beat the storyline. After that, it should be much more difficult. Mario 64 was more difficult, and Mario Sunshine was much more difficult, and it made both games last much longer for me (especially collecting all the blue coins in Sunshine... alright that was a bit annoying).

    And yeah, they didn't utilize all of Mario's jumps and abilities very well. I also was able to use many of Mario's abilities, combined with the spin, to take various shortcuts throughout levels. I want to have use those to get through some levels, not just take shortcuts. Sunshine did a great job of this, with some of it's difficult platforming levels forcing you to fully utilize Mario's abilities to get through them.

  • Amnesiac85

    @FriedConsole: That level was insane. My apartment's walls were caked with vile language by the time I was through that. My roommate said he's never heard me curse that much at a game before, and he's been my roommate for a few years.

    Lookin' gooood! Loved SM:G and this definitely looks like more of the same goodness with some great new twists/additions! =D

  • peAr nectAr

    @Bonuslevel: Besides the four player co-op, new levels, probably some new mechanics and enemies we haven't seen before.

    Yeah, I guess that stuff doesn't qualify the game as "new."

    @AlbionSilenus:

    That's exactly how I felt when I picked up Super Mario Galaxy. Every now and then, a game comes around that makes me remember all over again why I love games so much and SMG was one of those.

  • megatom0

    @sixfootgnome: See I thought that the wall jumps, or wall kicks, were very unwieldy in Mario 64. I felt that Super Mario Galaxy was comparable to SMB3 in both design and playability. SMB3 is so much easier than SMB1, but SMB3 is a beter game because of tighter controls better level design etc. I hope that this ends up as the SMW of the 3-d franchise, by that I mean more sprawling levels, a lot more secrets, and overall a longer harder game.

    megatom0

  • Tevor_the_Third

    I like the attitude Miyamoto has towards this game. Anyone else would just call it a sequel, but Miyamoto has that attitude that it's really just "more of the same, but awesome anyways". I've even heard him go so far to say that it's just Super Mario Galaxy 1.5.

    Nothing wrong with direct sequels, but I appreciate that Miyamoto doesn't normally think of doing things that way.

  • Mearns

    I'm also wondering if they'll get the budget, time span and overall work force to make this game up to scratch like the former. (I'm not holding my breath, but it'd be nice)

    @el_gordo: The purple star in the Luigi 8-bit stage says hello...

  • NeoAkira

    @Bonuslevel:

    There is a slight upgrade in graphics, but the story is a simple continuation, and it is the same game with new levels. Trying to make Gears 2 out to be anything other than your normal sequal is a stretch at best.

    If you still think Gears 1 and 2 are completely different games, I'm not so much amazed at how little people care about your opinion.

  • Grahamunculus

    Looks amazing as usual. Mario Galaxy is still my favorite Wii game and this looks to continue the trend.

  • Bonuslevel

    @NeoAkira: Sorry, but if you can't make out the difference between Gears 1 and Gears 2, I'm not so much amazed that you seem to be on Super Marios side.

  • TiKiMaN1

    @TiKiMaN1: Edit - I mean 242 stars. ;)

  • TiKiMaN1

    @Ted: You really got all 241 stars between Mario and Luigi all in one weekend? I think not. If you are a completionist the game is much harder.

  • geoffcbassett

    Um, am I the only one who noticed they abandoned the full orchestra for an electronic soundtrack. And the graphics are a step below the last game? Color me uninterested.

    geoffcbassett

  • NeoAkira

    @Bonuslevel:

    What? Your post seriously confuses me.

    Gears 1 and 2 are totally different games with new stories and totally different graphics? Yet this is a simple rehash?

    No, just no. Turn in your gamer card, now.

  • NeoAkira

    @tim rogers:

    To be fair, it sounded like Rotmm was generalizing about all Mario music, since his post was a mario rant and not a super mario galaxy rant.

    And since you listed Original mario themes as good video game music I think you understand Hairball's response.

  • enderx

    I'm sorry, but this looks fantastic. mario galaxy was exactly what a video game should be. (save for the flying part, that didn't do anything in the game really.)

    bkld18

  • SteveZim1017

    @tim rogers: I think people are talking about the music for each level, not the powers music.

    The powers music isn't designed to be something to stop and listen to, its designed to make you instantly recognize that the power you just recieved is on a time limit, and to also let you know when that time limit is about to end.

    SteveZim1017

  • Gojira007

    Kay, this looks pretty bitchin'. I'm particularly intrigued by the stage where Mario is creeping around with all those purple Ghost-like clones following him around (I'm guessing they're the things Miyamoto was referring to), and the whole thing just looks like a lot of fun, with the same key element that made "Galaxy" such an addictive blast being applied to Yoshi and the Drill, namely good, intuitive, creative use of their powers to add a new dimension to the game.

  • jjason82

    @NicolasCage: Calm down dude. All you guys are getting ridiculously defensive about him saying the music is bad, almost like it was your own mother.

    So you're saying that since somebody has more talent than you that you're not allowed to complain about their work... which means for the average person (like you) that's pretty much everybody. Tell me, have you ever complained about a piece of media? Ever? Yes, you have. Don't be a hypocrite.

  • Sirusjr

    @Mommar: Phail, I could barely beat the final level of galaxy with all the frustrating platforming. I don't know why I would bother with the same shit only harder. I have no patience when it comes to repetitive platforming deaths and having to repeat sections of a level over and over until I finally finish.

  • buddhathing

    @robpe36: Mario platformers are one of the main reasons people buy nintendo machines, but ever since SMB3, its fans have had to wait for the next generation to get another fix. This is a good middle ground. It sounds like they started out to do what would be the equivalent of an expansion pack (probably would have done this if DLC were a viable reality on the Wii) but now we get the first real Mario sequel since SMB 2 was released in Japan. No one has to buy it, but a lot of folks will love it. Just too bad it's probably delaying a new Pikmin.

  • Rotmm

    @-Hairball-: I dunno really, but it's certainly not that mix between an ice cream van and a low-budget daytime gameshow. That makes me want to go out and torture kittens. With toothpicks. And matches. And battery acid.

    But the kind of game music I've enjoyed? Deus Ex, Jesper Kidd stuff, Some of the music in the original Unreal, Zelda stuff, etc and going back in the day you have people like Rob Hubbard and Galway pumping out tunes that bore (because they had to) almost unlimited repeat listens.

    Maybe I'm just fickle, but I thought the music in that trailer was shite.

    @Lessthan_tom: I'm going to disagree. For me, I'm at a midpoint in my progression toward being a more softcore gamer: I still enjoy collecting all of the collectibles but no longer have hours and hours to spend on trying to get each of several ridiculously hard ones.

    If you make some of them proposterously hard, I'll just have to tune out that whole type of collectible and enjoy the game less as a result. As we all know, getting all but a few of a collectible is infuriating.

  • tim rogers

    @-Hairball-: are you serious? that music is mind-bogglingly empty.

    amazing videogame music:

    1. original super mario bros. (1, 2, USA, 3) themes

    This.

    FanBuoy is crazy to think this was the best mario ever... it was just plain stale IMO. The super-linear levels, the gimmicky "worlds", not at all what I expected of galaxy.

    I was rather hoping for a game much more similar to Mario 64, but where instead of a Hub you just had space, and certain sets of worlds would be "connected" ie you could take items/activate puzzles from one to the other... So world 1-1 was a simple little ball, then 1-2 was a

    The game needs to be harder. I'm actually terrible at beating most video games, and I got 120 stars with very little difficulty.

  • russtophiles

    @robpe36: The only thing that really bothers me is how he casually mentions that they planned on using the SAME LEVELS with different objectives initially.

    Eventually it seems like they don't want to have to create anything new for games and just have an automated system that lets them slightly tweak a game they released a year ago and sell it for $50.

    The default level of complacency regarding game development is pretty disturbing.

    @robpe36: oh absolutely.

    unfortunately galaxy 1 was fun as hell, so assuming they give us the same number of levels, I'll happily pay full price for it. I'm cool with expansion packs even if they ARE marketted as sequels. I just require they be REALLY good.

    the only part of this that bugs me is that they made it their one big announcement at E3 where it should've just been a side note.

  • Lessthan_tom

    @FriedConsole: I got every star in Super Mario Galaxy and it just didn't compare to the difficulty in Super Mario 64 which also isn't as hard as Super Mario Bros. 3 which annoys me. I think they need to step the traction down a little to make the game harder. I mean if you play as Luigi in SMG then you get less traction, but he jumps really high making the game easy. I also hate the fact that SMG doesn't take into account the use of any special jumps like the long jump, the back flip, the cartwheel jump or the triple jump. Coupled with the fact that it's incredibly easy to wall jump in SMG and you can spin after like every jump, you could pretty much backflip/ cartwheel jump/tripple jump to wall jump to spin up any cliff. It makes the game too easy and there are lots of shortcuts you can take. I found myself flying through the levels like it were Sonic Adventure 1 or something. It was fun and all the gravity mechanics were interesting and I loved the artistic design, but it lacked challenge and it really annoyed me.

    And as for that purple coin challenge, the special jumps and the spin which allows you directional control made it easy even if you made mistakes because you could always just spin back onto stable tiles.

  • QamraEris

    despite it being more of the same, if it ain't broke don't fix it! mario galaxy was one of the best games ever made in terms of sheer fun. the only part i'm worried about is the lack of new fully orchestrated music.

    that said, i kinda have the feeling i grew out of these games. they're probably still very high quality (mario games used to be top notch when i played them), but they just don't appeal to me anymore, or at least not the way they did when i was 10.

  • MysteryPersonX

    Did Miyamoto explicitly say that entire levels would be reused from SMG? In the absence of more information, I'm more inclined to believe that the original intention was for all of the level concepts/art assets to be reused, with SMG2 essentially being an elaborate map hack for SMG, similar to the Japanese SMB2. Super Mario Galaxy: The Lost Levels.

    Despite the cries of "rehash", most of the art assets for the levels themselves that are seen in this video are new. I expect those 10% of "old" levels will still be new level designs, just a bit less original visually than the rest of the game.

    Of course, given that the objectives are what really make the levels anyway, it won't be the end of the world either way.

    @robpe36: I think it was in the roundtable with Miyamoto where they talked about all the ideas they had brimming over from the original Mario Galaxy that they couldn't use, so they decided to take 'em all and make this game out of them. In my books, at least, that makes it sound like this could potentially be a game that may be overlooked as a sequel but be jam-packed with awesome gameplay and good ideas. I don't consider this to be a rehash - of course, none of us will really know until we play it.

    @GundamAC197: That was very hard, but actually it was easier for me after looking at some how-to videos on YouTube.

    @NeoAkira: Look, I'm not here to fight with you. It's my opinion about Nintendos neat money-making.
    They're delivering one basic Mario-gameplay for more than 25 years now, just in a different design. With Mario Galaxy they even adopt that same design from last year.
    You might like it and that's okay. I think it's not enough for a company that already installed 50 million consoles made out technology from last gen and selling it inflated to kids.
    To Gears 1+2: Gears is Gears, otherwise it wouldn't be called like that. And G2 differs from G1 as much as every other second part in a game-series, take Halo, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, ...
    By the way: I will speak out, even if people don't care for my opinion.

    MIDI. I can't wait till the actual game plays that song for me with a live orchestra. So much better.

    I'm just happy to see Yoshi getting some love. But god, I hope they don't make him limited like the "power-ups" were.

    I swear, getting a Fire Flower, only for it to "expire" after like 15 seconds was one of the most soul-crushing experiences of my gaming career. Lame :/
