Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Walks To PSP In 2010

Hideo Kojima made a guess appearance at Sony’s 2009 E3 press conference to announce Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PlayStation Portable.

Peace Walker takes place 10 years after Metal Gear Solid 3, chronicling the rise of Outer Heaven in Costa Rico. The game is not a side story or spin-off, but a full game written and produced by Kojima himself. The game seems to star Solid Snake, though at one point there were four different versions of Snake on the screen, including a rather disturbing scene featuring 2 Snakes, 1 Box. The trailer featured a great deal of classic Snake sneaking about, so expect this to be more tranditional that say, Guns of the Patriots.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is due out in 2010. We’ll have more info later in the show!

    @Squirrelbot3000:

    More PSP love. Thank you, Sony.

    Did you not hear, 364 titles coming for PS Brand this year? 100 are PS2.. That leaves 164 for PS3 and PSP, say 100 for PSP, and 64 PS3 games. 35 exclusives. 08 kicked ass, 09 will kick even more..

  • MechaTama31

    I just hope the controls aren't as abysmal as the ones for Portable Ops. I couldn't play Portable Ops, even though I really wanted to.

    Im torn here.

    Part of me is glad that kojima is doing another metal gear game.

    Part of me wishes he would put down the MG franchise for a little while and work on something else so he can come back to it later with more enthusiasm.

    At any rate Im glad anything he works on though since he has a talent for games and has never really made a bad game.

  • otis123

    this looks good, I just wish it was on the ps3, but i might have to buy a psp go to play it on, im tired of my 1000 series.

    So they were two separate games all along huh? lol

    It's only natural to see the final link between Big Boss and Solid Snakes' time.

    And I think Rising will probably be multi platform. We've heard so little about it so far that its too early to be jumping to conclusions. Plus I think it was said.

    @butterbandit: I would like that. I would enjoy going back to Metal Gear Solid's style of gameplay.

    @optimusp: Careful man, you could get banned for stupid comments like these.

    Needless to say, I'm very excited an MGS is actually taking place at my country. Can't wait to see how Kojima Prods will picture Limón and the general turmoil of the first half of the 70's in CR.

    Can't wait!

    @Demonbird: MGS:Rising will almost certainly be a Ninja Gaiden style hack-n-slash, and this is another PSP game (I liked PO but couldn't stand playing it).

    So from the prospect of 2 new Metal Gear games and his obtusely long countdown timer before this week, I wouldn't exactly say he 'wins E3'.

  • StevenRafael

    As long as they improve the controls from MGSPO and adapt the sneaking accordingly, this should be great. If they learned from their mistakes, and if this is a more linear, less "play this level 15 times in ever so slightly different ways" kind of game, then HAALLLLRIGHT!

    And picture 164cm tall, seventy-something years old Figueres as Snake's ally taking terrorists down with a submachine gun. I'd buy a PSP Go just for that.

    tavo31

  • WPack911

    This game looks awesome! A definite must buy for me.

  • FarukM

    @tavo31: I was being hypothetical on what they could use for story :P

    Figueres would be awesome!

    FarukM

  • tavo31

    @FarukM: Well I don't remember hearing about Nicaraguans communists(Sandinistas) getting into Limón. And the gang problem is in Limón Centro and in Cieneguita primarily, and it is somewhat recent, definitely not 30+ years old.

    I don't think they'll mess with Costa Rican history much further than the no army part, the rest will surely be about the bigger actors in the Cold War, even though it'd be a BLAST to have Figueres in the game.

    tavo31

  • Jon Sin

    Just to answer your question without totally getting on your case, Sony only showed games that were PS exclusive(they said this at the end). That's why MGS Rising wasn't there.

    Jon Sin

  • phtotrope

    I'm guessing the multiple Snake's may have something to do with an early cloning project, pre-Les Enfants Terribles? Idk though, just a guess.

  • FarukM

    @pandafresh: I think it'll probably take place in Limón. That place, even if it is beautiful and people are nice, has suffered from a bit of negligence from the CR government. Therefore, parts of it are somewhat dangerous and gang-ridden. So it could be logical to use these gangs or people not happy with Costa Rica's government during the time (Sandinistas, leftist movements, gangs as mentioned above) for story-wise purposes.

    It would be interesting to see a military base or some training camp... and how they will try to mix it with actual Costa Rican/ United States/ Russian/ etc history alá MGS3.

  • Squirrelbot3000

    @nivekious:

    It's Big Boss. Solid Snake had never been to Outer Heaven until what you just mentioned. My guess is they'll just make him a playable character, like Old Snake in PO+.

  • Squirrelbot3000

    @AwesomeExMachina:

    Likely multiplayer. Every video from previous PSP Portable Ops was always a reality. The Power Ranger-like Genome soldiers, the duck race, all of it was possible-- so seeing 4 Big Bosses onscreen might imply that this is multiplayer. After all, Portable Ops allowed multiple Snakes on the battlefield-- this one just additionally allows multiple costumes as well.

    Squirrelbot3000

    @FarukM: Nothing like a nice Imperial beer in the evening :D
    @tavo31: And yes, Figueres was the greatest man in Costa Rican history. No where else has any leader won a war (1948 civil war) and right away decided to abolish the army and redirect all the funds to healthcare and education. That's why we do alright in this country.

  • Squirrelbot3000

    @BlueBadger: Exactly. This completely trumps the Rising announcement at M$. Hell, Kojima even (scripted) dissed the VP of 360: "I didn't say anything about Solid Snake".

    Squirrelbot3000

  • Squirrelbot3000

    @1up: And I believe he inadvertently kicked M$ in the shins by saying that this is a TRUE MGS sequel, not a side story-- which would imply MGS Rising is exactly that.

    Squirrelbot3000

  • Squirrelbot3000

    @Kuwabara Kazuo:

    More PSP love. Thank you, Kojima.

    Fixed.

    Squirrelbot3000

  • Squirrelbot3000

    @Shooter McGavin:

    Seriously, did you really expect Kojima to come out and re-announce Rising? That'd be like turning and kicking M$ in the elderberries.

    Granted, I'm not opposed to that... but the fact remains this is a TRUE sequel, not a side story (Kojima's words), and a PSP exclusive.

    Squirrelbot3000

  • FarukM

    @tavo31: I was born and raised in New York City, and then moved down to Costa Rica. I did most of my school, highschool and college here, and some in the states.

    Costa Rica FTW!

    FarukM

  • tavo31

    @FarukM: Bravo, Jose Figueres Ferrer, and bravo to you sir, for knowing some CR history.

    tavo31

  • FP_slomo788

    @bakura: I actually enjoyed it A LOT. I didn't expect it to be a full-blown PS2 game, especially since Kojima wasn't involved.

    The story was actually great, and explained a lot about the saga. And ad-hoc multiplayer was incredible amounts of fun. So was "converting" the enemy to your side and sending them to battle. While not the best in the series (which does not mean it's not great), it's still one of my favorite PSP games.

  • FarukM

    @tavo31: As someone that has lived in Costa Rica most of his life, I could say that Limón is one of the most beautiful places in the country.

    That being said, I'm anxious to see how the story turns out.

    An interesting fact is that the President of Costa Rica during the 1970 - 1974 term hated dictators and was the same one that abolished the Costa Rican army in 1948.
    He also stood up and pointed a sub machine gun at a plane cabin full of hijackers until they surrendered.
    He could be called "Costa Rica's Solid Snake"

    FarukM

  • jamesjohnson01

    @Highlander Wolf: In other words, multiplayer confirmed.

  • phtotrope

    This, just like Portable Ops, is telling part of the story in between the big events. I think it's perfect for the PSP. It doesn't have enough to become a PS3 game, it would actually be pointless. And this is BIG BOSS, there's no way its Solid Snake, get with it.

  • jamesjohnson01

    @optimusp: What, are you supporting typos? People are paid to write, you know.

  • Nophex

    Whats the deal with 4 Big bosses ?

  • jamesjohnson01

    @Kuwabara Kazuo: Really? The Barranquilla cost of Colombia wasn't fictional.

    (sorry for my bad english)

    bakura

  • jamesjohnson01

    @BlueBadger: Yeah I caught that.

    It's like he confirmed the multi-plat MGSR is a total Raiden spin-off, and that this Big Boss sequel is a true MGS game for PSP. Haha.

  • BlueBadger

    @Demonbird:
    Was it just me, or did Kojima make some slight, maybe not favorable, remarks about MGS Rising?

    I can't quote verbatim, but it was around the lines of:
    "It's a true sequel"
    "Not a spin-off or side plot"
    "Full attention to this game, main MGS4 team on this"

    I really don't think he wanted to make MGS Rising, tbh. I think that was a Konami move. He seemed genuinely more excited about this...and it goes with the MGS universe way more than Rising. As a writer, Kojima probably likes relevance and plot.

    Or it could be that they aren't even really working on Rising yet and this is taking their attention. But this doesn't come out till 2010, sooo....

  • Sark

    Why do they make these kinds of games exclusive to the PSP of all things?
