@SketchyIndividual: The recent games have just been lacking substance really. Not in terms of gameplay, but in terms of the world itself.
Like if WW didn't have the sailing parts it would have been absolutely epic, and would have no trouble competing with OoT for title of best Zelda game. But then TP rolled around with its generic story, boring overworld... ugh. It's like it was made with a cookie cutter and no chocolate chips! >:(
Not to say that I HATED it... it's just.. I expect more from a zelda game in terms of story and atmosphere.
@QualityJeverage: THIS. THIS F****** THIS.
Go play majora's mask, anyone, check out the world, the atmosphere, and the charm of each individual character and how they play so well off each other, like the stories of each area all have their sad sides, and then there's clock town that's just always bustling and lively until nighttime or the third day. It all comes together soooo well! Even WW had this, it was just separated by too much water.
and then go play TP and see how dry it is in terms of story and atmosphere.
I really hope they take their time and make the next one great.
Superlocke
@Pete359: Wrong. Nothing will ever top the announcement of Ocarina of Time.
Twilight Princess is easily the best Zelda, however....after Link to the Past!
casmith07
You would think that Miyamoto would really be able to speak good English after all these years of being around American gaming media, etc...but perhaps not?
He's looking much older now too.
casmith07
@Wawa: Not a very hard job either.
Jake Earl
@shadow763: I think that's a poor excuse. Not everyone feeds off of nostalgia.
I played most of the games backwards; Windwaker was my first, TP was my second. OoT was my third. And I still agree with most of what they said.
syrantking
Your all just getting older and your little Nintendo child inside is dying.
It could work, Nintendo... scratch that, Miyamoto could make it work. It could even be in a different genre like RPG or something. A seed is planted, just by the mere mention of the idea.
AlucardsQuest
@QualityJeverage: I think a big problem in the later ones is the world feels smaller. TP especially. Mainly because sidequests and tasks/problems to solve for characters weren't as numerous.
MM and OoT had a heap of things to do, and many optional things that you would find yourself doing when you got stuck in a main dungeon or even when you were just exploring/felt like doing them.
It made the game feel a lot deeper and made the world seem a lot larger when there were all these small side character NPC's to interact with and solve problems for.
@Ian Wexler: agreed.
I'm in no rush for another Zelda.
(okay I'm lying)
pinoy78
@Sebz93: So you're hoping it's as good as Link's Awakening?
Raziel
A new Zelda wouldn't be a second Zelda considering Twilight Princess wasn't really a Wii game, but rather a port with tacked on motion controls.
It's a bit disappointing we're getting a Mario Galaxy expansion and that a new Zelda is too much.
Chasmang
@Keldorek: I'd buy that.
I'll have to post this in the next TAYS, but I am beginning to feel that 3D is inherently inferior to 2D for gameplay in a lot of games, and it just gets forced on most games because non-3D graphics take a huge critical hit from fans and reviewers.
Look at some of the amazing things that can be done with 2D, sprite-based graphics with Odin Sphere or Muramasa. A 2D Zelda on Wii could be made to look phenomenal.
sixfootgnome
@Synthesthesia: You're onto something great here. Wind Waker's visuals really contributed to its storybook style and presentation in a way that is perfect for Legend of Zelda.
I have no idea what a wind-waker-style Epona would look or move like though.
sixfootgnome
A Kingdom Hearts style game with all the Nintendo characters instead of Disney characters would be awesome, I think.
SiDCrAzY
@Ganon255: Same here. Sad when you have to put a game on autopilot before it gets to where it needs to be.
I did finish Phantom Hourglass, though. At least in that one, there were the frogs and the ability to warp.
@n00b_pwner: D:

@QualityJeverage: I agree Mask was the last great one. I did enojy Minish Cap quite a bit though. Windwaker bored me with the sailing, too bad because it looked so cool.
This is kind of pathetic. Nintendo announces two new Mario games and the first response is "lol where Zelda". Seriously, can't you people ever be satisfied?
If I was in Miyamoto's position, I would kind of be pissed off.
Joshua Bell
Wouldn't it be awesome if after the end credits of Spirit Tracks there's a hidden Zelda Wii trailer?
I just hope it's a good fun game, something that Twilight Princess wasn't.
But for any new Zelda reveal nothing, IMHO, will ever top the reveal for Twilight Princess, with Shiggy on stage with Master Sword and 1UP shirt.
For me, that was the last "magic" Zelda moment.
@ltdedloser: You're clearly mad, and need to voluntarily commit yourself to a mental institution.
Of the Nintendo based persuasion.
Synthesthesia
@MustyBuckets: Hardly!
@Gengar91: Keep the style, but I hated the sea in Wind Waker. Bring Epona into it, traversing hyrule on horseback and you're on to a winner...
Synthesthesia
I was really hoping for a more substantial bit of information on the new Zelda game. Like, having a trailer for it. I really enjoy the video games. Anything from Ocarina of Time and up (not including handheld games). I didn't care for Majora's Mask as much, but other than that, they're amazing games. I personally think Twilight Princess is equally as good as Ocarina of Time. Actually, within the last month, I've completed Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess again. So fun. I started playing Wind Waker again, but after playing 3-4 days and having to start looking for the Triforce shards... I can't stand it. The first time was enough for me. Anyway, I really hope the next Zelda game is truly epic, and blows the previous ones out of the water.
Sebz93
@SketchyIndividual: I feel like the reason the Zelda games have been getting progressively less awesome (I hesitate to say "worse", because they are still fine games) is that Nintendo continues to insist on trying to add gimmicky hooks to the games when they aren't really needed.
Wind Waker had the sailing, Twilight Princess had the Wolf bits, etc. I don't mind Nintendo trying to mix it up, but I don't think any of these "hooks" has actually worked well since the Masks in Majora's Mask. For me, Majora's Mask was the last truly fantastic Zelda game, before they became merely good as they are now.
They need to put less emphasis on thinking up a new bullet point like turning into a wolf, and more time working on making the Zelda world somewhere I want to be again. I think a lot of what made Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time such excellent games is the tremendous sense of character and setting that they had. There was a definite mood and style that prevailed over each game.
The newer games, Twilight Princess especially, feel more like generic fantasy worlds than something that you would expect out of a Zelda game. Everything just felt disconnected and barren, lacking in the strong, unique character that the previous games had.
QualityJeverage
I loved the look on Miyamoto face after you said "Mario... and Zelda... together". Priceless!
@SketchyIndividual: Well, I kind of see what you mean. But look at it this way. Console entries since OoT: MM (awesome)
WW (very highly regarded)
TP (I liked it, others loved it, but it wasn't as good as the others for sure)
I wouldn't say its grown stale at all, I think Motion+ will help make another big leap in the franchise. Its just that because you can't revolutionise something like LTTP --> OoT was every time. So people view entries as being similar to eachother.
This is the first announcement of Zelda Wii that I'll actually buy as confirming the game. Every other instance of news has been too vague for me to accept, or just mere implication that he's working on something with the Zelda team. Good to know he's working on it.
Also, the Link riding Yoshi thing was hilarious.
@Saint Anima: Subspace Emissary? But actually that whole mode was boring. I played it once on Easy to get all the characters. Haven't gone back to it yet.
@SketchyIndividual: Yeah. I loved OoT, I loved Windwaker (except for the triforce hunt)... but Twilight Princess just bored me. It was just boring, soulless even. I played the Wii version, and the controls were just gimmicky, I wish there were optional GCN controls. I just couldn't bring myself to continue playing. Admittedly, same thing happened to me with Windwaker during the triforce hunt. Definitely going to give that another go.
So I too welcome them taking all the time they need to bring a fresh Zelda, and I think everyone should grab onto the Triforce of Patience and do the same.
@Wawa: *guy. ugh
that gut who translates Miyamoto has the best job on the planet.
Well-played, Mr.Tortilla, well-played.
You almost had that Miyamoto
@SketchyIndividual: I was hoping this as well, but mainly just because I thought it was stupid to actually expect it in the first place. I don't know if I can deem the series a downward spiral yet, based on just a portable game and Twilight Princess (I loved Wind Waker). I mean, we all knew Mario Sunshine was a step back, but it was still pretty good and later on they came back with Mario Galaxy.
I really enjoyed the N64 games, quite a bit. The SNES one is still my favorite hands down. Windwaker, I couldn't get into it like the others but I felt it was a quality game even though I couldn't appreciate it fully. Portable Zeldas are a wash. Not bad, but nothing to write about. Twilight Princess though, that wasn't very good at all. Just felt too much like a rehash of Ocarina, in every bad way you could do it and it was ugly. The dungeons were boring and the weapons/gadgets were lame. Overall, I hate it, but I respect that others like it since I do know where they get it, I just expect more from the series by now.
CraigJapants
It just dawned on me that I've had twilight princess since day 1 and have yet to play it... What's wrong with me?
I hope I'm not the only one, but screw Wind Waker's style, and TP's graphics, I'd love a 2D SNES style game for the Wii. Maybe I'm the only one.
@Agumen: Yeah after seeing what happened with subspace emissary in SSBB, I'd rather not mix my nintendo IPs unless they were meant to be in the same universe. Sigh no info on Zelda for the Wii...maybe something will show up this fall...

DEJAVUUUUUU
Mario, Metroid and Zelda new games!!
BlitzGrilo learned PK Starstorm
@Agumen: That's pretty much what I mean.
@Ian Wexler: While I would have loved Totillo to have pressed for some more info, realistically he wasn't spilling the beans. And Miyamoto's a fun, playful guy, so why not indulge him?
But the crossover idea did suck. Sorry Stephen!
@SketchyIndividual: It's been all downhill since Wind Waker. And by 'all downhill' I mean a decline from mostly masterpieces to mostly excellent. But it is getting a bit stale.
@Mesren_Makai: I'd agree with you there. Wind Waker's art design was just perfect. But alas, I feel it has been sidelined only for use in the DS Zelda's when really I would like to see the Wind Waker 2 for Wii. I can still hope!
Im happy that a Wii Zelda wasnt announced this year. IT gives me one thing to look forward to for next year's E3. And hopefully the long development time will allow them to get a good grasp on Wii motion plus. I cant really imagine what they would exactly do with it (Red Steel 2-like gameplay, anyone?), but hopefully it will be good. And plus, I already got my mind on the Epona-deserting, train-riding Link.
shadowlegend
@SketchyIndividual: 3D Rea- DAMNIT!
You got Miyamoto talking about new console Zelda, and THAT'S the direction you decided to take the conversation?! SUPER EPIC FAIL.
Ian Wexler
Actually, that would be a pretty neat idea. Instead of a fighting game like Smash Bros., how about an adventure game where each Nintendo character's unique skills come into play when getting through an area? Let Link cut some bushes, Mario do all of the platforming, etc.
this is so cute.
Bialia
@SketchyIndividual: In before "3D Realms/Duke Nukem Forever lololol!11!!1!"
@jedbeetle: LIES!
Y'know, I still wouldn't mind another cel-shaded Zelda. WW became my all-time favorite, not just because of the beautiful art, but the story: a boy saving his sister, and, along the way, becoming the hero of winds.
OR, I wouldn't mind a Legend of Zelda 1 remake...
Or, well, whatever, I trust Shiggy for the most part on Zelda.
Mesren_Makai
I feel that I should be ashamed that, unlike many, I was hoping there'd be no mention of a new Zelda game.
Now now, before y'all pull out the pitchforks, hear me out. I like the Zelda games, but like many I've felt that they're getting slightly less fun with each new game. I don't know if I'd call it entirely stale, but just not as fresh and fun. I like to think that, because nobody rushed to make the new game ready for at least an announcement at E3, there's some serious work going into the game. They aren't rushing it, and that usually means good things for the game.
I would give anything to be able to meet Miyamoto. I am jealous of you, Mr. Totilo.
So, no surprise trailer then. Drat.
It wasn't a ridiculous pitch. You had me sold on the link and yoshi combination! Who'd ride a normal horse when you could ride a dinosaur :O Link certainly wouldn't if the option was open to him me thinks :/
Nipple slip!
jedbeetle
@Gengar91: You know, it would work if they use the Link caricature from Windwaker to ride Yoshi... Not so much the traditional Link though.
@sixfootgnome: There is room for both types of gameplay. Let's take it a bit further. I want a sequel to Zelda 2 from nes. There, I beat you at imaginary games that will never be made.
Muramasa looks great, I just hope the gameplay is solid as well. The game looks like it might have too much pointless combo slashing and not enough fun dodging and countering. I sure hope it has a hard mode.
@BlitzGrilo learned PK Starstorm: Blame it on the average consumer who goes for name brands. Blame it on logic that allows consumers to use their past experience with a brand to make informed decisions about future purchases.
In my opinion, it's not always necessary to create new brands. Really, just how much would it change? I think the only thing that would change is aesthetics. Sure, they could toss out Mario and make some other platformer game that plays exactly like Mario, but then Nintendo would have to use a lot more marketing cash to push this new platformer, because noone knows what it is or how good it is. Brands help customers to know what to expect from products they buy.
I hope this clears things up for anyone who complains about so many sequels from any game company.
@shadowlegend: haha. I liked the first Zelda DS, and this one's gameplay looks even cooler. I really like the statue whose path you can create.
@sweetie55: There's no info on Zelda for Wii because Sony is a copy cat company and they even showed a demo in which you use bows/arrows and swords to fight skeletons with their wii motes. Sony probably has a "Zelda killer" coming down the pipeline. The sad thing is, Sony is actually good enough these days with their first party games that they might actually beat Nintendo at their own game after stealing the Wii mote.
@Synthesthesia: Imagine steering the ship with the analog, and aiming your cannon/weapon with the Wii mote. This is how it should have been done in the first place (2 analog sticks). Twilight Princess and WW have terrible overworlds. I really hope they stop that trend with the next Zelda Wii.
@Superlocke: As far as I can remember, you couldn't shoot while moving on the ship in WWaker. I was really annoyed by that. If they fixed the ship combat and made the ocean fun to be in, WW would possibly be the best Zelda ever. I also liked the fact that you could take enemies' weapons, and counter attack them.
I like the art style of Link in GBA/4 swords (yes there is a slight difference) better than the WW Link, but WW had such an awsome look to it. I hope that for the next one they do stylized graphics but with a more mature look.
@SketchyIndividual: Totally agreed. I, for one, wasn't impressed a single moment during Twilight Princess. The colors were dull, the character designs were goofy... kind of a polar-opposite to what I had hoped for. Some of the item redesigns were cool (Gale Boomerang, for example), but they didn't mask the fact that we'd seen these before.
I'd just like to say, I don't want to see another damn Zelda game until it includes the Pegasus Boots, and Roc's Feather/Cape
