Miyamoto “Sorry” He Has No New Pikmin For Us Yet
Last year, Shigeru Miyamoto let slip that Nintendo was making a new Pikmin game. Today, he told me and Brian Crecente that the project is moving ahead, but not at the pace some fans may have hoped.
“I’m sorry,” Miaymoto said when we asked him why the new Pikmin wasn’t at this E3. “Unfortunately we haven’t been able to expand the team size very much, because we’ve been working on so many different games that we’ve shown off at the show. So the team is working very hard, but it’s a bit of a small team.”
I asked, laughing, if there were more than two people on the team.
“Of course,” he said, chuckling. “The basic work that they’ve been doing quite nicely.” I tried to confirm whether the team was working on a full new game. He thought for a bit and said: “Yeah, and my basic idea is that the sense of the depth of the game and the simplicity of the control will all be there.”

@Some_Guy2:
You clever, amazing, boringly repetitive man.
@Rauzaruke: Yes, definitely. Personally I liked the first better because of the athmosphere of being on a totally new place, and hope is pretty much small for ever leaving.
But the second has some changes to gameplay that definitely works for the best.
I hope the game is more interesting than the character from Brawl.
@plebeianprint: If you look at everything put out by first/second party for nintendo over the course of 2009/2010 its actually a substantial amount. Sure not all of it appeals to everyone, but its quite a large number of games.
@Combine: just be happy that ninetendo isn't Swanson, or else our games would be tv dinners and we'd have to eat them.
i watched the nintendo keynote, and i found it to be abysmally dismal. Let's look at the Wii: From Nintendo, for this year:New Metroid? Crystal Chronicles? Super Mario Bros. Wii.
No zelda, as much as you want it on your list. Red Steel 2 is third party. No Mario this year. It's not as pretty a picture as we'd like to Mario paint.
Really nintendo with all the money your raking in you maybe couldnt put a bigger team behind pikmin 3? Seriously?
But im sure wii music and wii sports resort had huge teams
@GohanGVO: Except Nintendo doesn't exactly dig TGS as much as we do.
@Aurongel: yeah, i don't need a trailer or footage and a big announcement as long as I know work is being done.
@methan69: Dude, New SMB is the 800 lb gorilla of the charts (the donkey kong of its domain, maybe?). Rain or shine, it is there in the top 20. As much as i want a Pikmin (ie, very much), I would give NSMBW precedence over anything. It is as close as you can get to a sure thing in this industry. If you didn't rush production of it, you'd be an idiot.
This falls under the opposite category from Wii Music (ie, Pikmin being delayed is A Thing That I Do Not Blame Nintendo For)
@Despacio: Just be happy nintendo isn't blizzard. You wouldn't see any of those games for another 3 years if they were.
@Rauzaruke: I bought it oas New Play Control (Australian one, you guys have another month for that?)
And the controls work really well for it, and it is fun.
@Despacio: If you're expecting all of your gaming needs to be met by a single developer throughout an entire generation, then you're bound to be disappointed. And, I might add, you'd better have a a lot of patience for the next AAA title to come out. That, or be content with consistent yet mediocre titles. You can't have it both ways.
Now, you could simply argue that then Nintendo should do a better job of courting 3rd parties. To that I would simply argue it isn't necessarily Nintendo's fault for the lack of good 3rd party games on the Wii and the contention that while 3rd party games aren't as good as they should be, they are on an "upward slope" of sorts. Some examples of this would be Red Steel 2, NMH2, Boom Blox, and Bethesda's new game.@myketuna:
@Some_Guy2:
It's Mario Galaxy 1.9
paulrenzo
@Derek Rumpler: Yeah but what Despacio is trying to say is we have to wait until next year for that. "We've been waiting long enough." And even then that new Zelda isn't coming out for another 1 1/2-2 years I suppose. If they announce next year, it MIGHT come out Holiday 2010, but I bet it'll be a 2011 game.
@Despacio: You forget Super Mario Galaxy 2.
@MaxDragon7: All of that time he was out kicking ass...
If only he checked the grass beneath him, he might have settled for something much more quaint.
SEX_BISON
@Mesren_Makai: I admit it shows Nintendo is working, but I'm still disappointed. Last Holiday was absolutely abysmal for the loyal Nintendo fans, there was nothing outside of a rehashed Animal Crossing.
With Zelda, Golden Sun, and Mario & Luigi the DS looks strong for the year. But Nintendo owes Wii owners this year, we've been waiting long enough. From your list all Nintendo is giving us is New Super Mario Bros. which was just confirmed not to have online. Nintendo owes Wii owners looking for real games more.
Despacio
Well yeah, he's too busy working on Mario Galaxy 1.85
Some_Guy2
@Sandbox_Emperor: Actually I would imagine that SMB would have more weight to throw around than Pikmin. I mean, I love both (Pikmin are the cutest things on earth!), but New Super Mario Bros. Sold millions more than both Pikmins combined. Yeah, I'd say the new Mario is a bigger draw.
methan69
@Mesren_Makai: And people will still say that Nintendo making enough games.
Leanid
im not sure what nintendo was thinking, that new Super Mario Bros Wii would have a bigger draw and anticipation than freakin' Pikmin 3.
oh well, TGS maybe? Spaceworld? something soon please?!
well I did not expected to have so much surprises even though we have a mayor leak off previous to ir, and I can expect another year for pikmin to come out, I'm still happy with these franchise
As long as we can get some concrete conformations from Miyamoto, I'd say this is a battle won
Aurongel
@BlitzGrilo learned PK Starstorm: But srsly... would it kill them?
@BlitzGrilo learned PK Starstorm: She's right here! I'd put her on the phone, but her mouth is full. O hai, thought that 3 was another question mark.
@Mesren_Makai: Amen to that.
@Gengar91: And (if you have a Wii) it is still one of the best looking games on the Wii, even though it's obviously GC era.
@Rauzaruke: 2 is really good, but you might just want to wait for the Wii-make of it that's coming out soon.
@Rauzaruke: YES. Not only is it a good game, but if you are looking for a business proposition, the last new sealed one that sold on eBay went for $50. Buy as many as you can and put 'em up for HUGE PROFIT. Make sure to give me a cut for giving you the idea.
@GohanGVO:
Exactly. I can't wait for TGS, being the Japanophile I am and such.
CustomFirmware
I won't complain,
From Nintendo ALONE:
I got a new Golden Sun
Zelda's coming (wii)
Zelda game (DS)
New Metroid
Final Fantasy CC
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario Brothers Wii
New Red Steel
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Seriously. As a college student, it's going to take forever for me to save up to even RENT these.
Mesren_Makai
@Rauzaruke: Undoubtedly yes. It's better than the first in almost every single way!
@Derek Rumpler: No, it was Duke Nukem's bubble gum.
So I'm guessing the purple dot in the grass wasn't a Pikmin?
DEJa... what? no Pikmin... hmm where's my Magic Ball?
ok now i get it... WHERE'S MY MOTHER 3!?!?!?!?
BlitzGrilo learned PK Starstorm
Never picked up #2 after the first one and I have no excuse. The game is $15 new at my local Exchange. Buy?
Y/N?
@TOWER_JUNKIE: I bet it's better than rushing it for just a demo, I would have a decent new game than just a rehash or something.
Soliduma
Onward to TGS?
As a big fan of Pikmin, I'm very disappointed this wasn't shown off.
TOWER_JUNKIE
At least it's coming along! That's all that matters - even if it doesn't show up until next year.
grayfox9996
Didn't he say the same damn thing last E3? Surely they have something to show for it now! It's not like they've released ANY GAMES since the last Animal Crossing rehash.
@Mit: Ack. Good point. October Conference-ton, then.
@azr:
Olimar was one of the best characters on Brawl >=[
