There are two problems I have with the "Mini-Game Collection" complaint. Firstly, I don't consider "Animal Crossing" a mini-game collection, though I suppose I can somewhat see how one might call it that, and I definitely don't count "Pikmin" as one. Second, though, "Wii Sports" may be a Mini-Game collection of sorts, but it's also still very fun, intutitive, and replayable. I've yet to play "Wii Fit" myself, but given that we know there's a good number of people who use it quite a bit and have found it most helpful in bettering their health (if I could find it, I'd link to the Kotaku article that talks about that), I would argue it has virtues of its own anyway.

My point is that your problem isn't that you want new IPs from Nintendo. You want new IPs from Nintendo that appeal to you. An understandable desire, but a very different one from what your initial complaint suggested, and one that strikes me as somewhat unfair. It'd be like my complaining that the next "Gears of War" doesn't appeal to me because of its militaristic trappings; that would be true, of course, but it would also miss the point.

And I'm curious as to what you mean by a "new" SMB game with 4 players. How is "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" not a New Mario game? It's not using the same levels as its DS predecssor, and indeed its 4-player basis demands a design sheme radically different from previous Mario titles. So...what more could it have done to count as "new" to you, short of not being a Mario Game at all?

@MaxDragon7: Agreed - the Tokyo Game Show is in October right? I could see Nintendo announcing Pikmin and Zelda there, and then doing a larger announcement at E3 with playable demos of both on the show floor.

@azr: Which is your right. I, however, DID enjoy them (well, "Sports" anyay, still haven't gotten around to "Fit" though I really do want to), and so did many MANY other people. Because of that, it seems unfair to act as if "Wii Sports" and "Wii Fit" aren't new IPs simply because you didn't like them.

Their success is not meant to measure their quality to the individual, either, but rather their vitality as IPs to Nintendo. "Odama" was a new IP as well, but given that game's extremely low sales, I doubt we'll ever hear more from it.

Seriously, how about a New Play Control Wind Waker to tide us over?

It sold about 3.5 million in Japan where it has never been bundled.

People aren't spending $250 just to get Wii Sports. The same goes for Wii Play. They are buying the Wiimote that happens to come with a game, not the other way around.

Wii Fit is a great idea and the balance is board is very cool, but if you look at the other games you mentioned as IPs that didn't exist 5 years ago, you will notice that all of those (including Wii Fit)are nothing but a collection of mini-games packaged together. None of them are anything of substance. I loved Animal Crossing on the GC, but the Wii version just seems to be "AC + waggle" re-hash instead of a true sequel, which is VERY disappointing.

Punch Out! is a Wii game I actually am enjoying playing. Actually punching to knock King Hippo on his ass is very satisfying and the VS mode is fun also. My only complaint on that game is that the old characters follow the exact same patterns as they did in the original. Some new moves for them would have been nice, but over all it is one of my favorite Wii games.

A new Pikmin WOULD have been a great thing to hear that was coming but if you notice from past E3s, Ninty doesn't like to announce more than one big title a year. New SMB Wii for this year, SMG2 for next year and maybe, just maybe, a new Zelda the year after that.

Maybe instead of me asking for new IPs, I should have been asking for "true sequels". New SMB Wii looks like it will be fun with 4 players but I would have much rather seen a "new" SMB game with 4 players instead.

@tormenta3001: Makes me wonder if Kojima paired up with Nintendo for this Zelda game... would we would already have about 4 cryptic websites, online ads and "censored" interviews telling us what role XXXX and XXXXX are going to have in the new one? :P

@flclkris: That is how I felt about Twilight Princess... it was not so deep and just more of the same so I lost interest.

Wind Waker on the other hand was a fresh experience, but its style is being taken advantage of with Phantom Hourglass (a great DS Zelda game) and Spirit Tracks (potentially great, but I fear it will be more of the same but with a train...)

No worries, Mr. Miyamoto. We got TWO new Wii Mario games and a new Wii Metroid game all in one day. Nintendo addressed two of the Big 3 first party IPs. PLUS, the Zelda team probably just put the finishing touches on Spirit Tracks. Factor in a short break, and now is the time to start making this new Wii Zelda.

As for announcing an announcement, it wasn't like he said this during their presser. This was announced at a small Developers' roundtable that Kotaku happened to get access to. This wasn't a formal announcement. Lord, if we DON'T get a new Zelda announcement next year I can see fans screaming "BUT MIYAMOTO PROMISED ON THE STAGE AT E3!!!!111!!1".

i dont play it for nostalgia reasons... the character is a pretty typical silent small town hero but the think about LoZ is that the formula is simply flawless.. its the right mix of quests/puzzles/adventure/fun. thats why i come back every time. except phantom hourglass i barely played that one. I've actually never played anything before OOT, i've been meaning to get to LTTP.. I just got a new pad i should get on that.

With new Wii Mario and Metroid games on the horizon, I think I can live waiting a year for more Zelda.

@SketchyIndividual: I feel you. Personally, I prefer unique IPs. Zelda purely feeds on people's nostalgia from when they were kids. Don't get me wrong, the games are fun, they're just not much more fun than just about any other game. And in terms of story? I'm sorry but the depth is equivalent to a simple fairy tale. Fine in its own right, but over the course of a long adventure game, it tastes like watered down lemonade.

I don't follow E3 to see what could be coming NEXT year. I want to see what's coming THIS year. Let the NEXT E3 be about NEXT year.

So what'll that be, 5 years between Actual zelda game releases. I'm not counting phantom hourglass because it was more a diversion, than a full zelda game. I'm not especially thrilled about spirit tracks either, since it's only on a small cartridge, it won't be epic like the console games.

@Mr.SithNinja: I find the "New IP" complaint odd, given that some of Nintendo's most successful titles are from IPs that didn't exist even five years ago. "Wii Sports" and "Wii Fit" continue to be major moneymakers for the company, while "Brain Age" and the "Mama" series are also strong evergreen titles. They've also made a point of continuing to develop for their other, younger IPs like "Animal Crossing" and "Pikmin", as well as revisiting older IPs that haven't gotten that much attention recently, like "Punch Out!". In other words, there seems to be a good deal of variety in the IPs Nintendo uses, and a lot of that comes from the new ones they've developed.

I'd also find the complaint of "rehashing" as specifically addressed to Nintendo more compelling if

a.) utilizing a steady stable of IPs wasn't a fundamental practice at Microsoft and Sony, as well as many 3rd Party Devs like Capcom and Namco. It's how the Industry's worked for some time now, and holding Nintendo alone culpable in continuing that practice, particularly when it's worked out pretty well for them, seems disingenuous. Not that I believe more new IPs is bad, mind you, quite the opposite, but it seems unfair to act as if Nintendo alone does this with their franchises.

b.) the result wasn't games that I enjoy the Hell out of. The original "Super Mario Galaxy" remains one of my favorite games of all time, and I have no doubt the Sequel is going to be just as enjoyable. Likewise, "New Super Mario Bros." on the DS is a game I can always reliably turn to for a good time, and a Co-Op multiplayer version seems a dream come true to me. If those aren't your cup of tea, well, that's fine, there are plenty of big-name IPs I know of which do little for me. But I don't act like that makes the companies who develop them bad.

@Ueziel: To be fair, since "Other M", SMG2, and NSMBWii are all coming out in 2010, that means they'll be at the minimum roughly six months after their announcements. Since it's likely they aren't coming out at the very start of January, probably a bit more.

Still, the whole reason Nintendo keeps its cards so close to the vest these days is to prevent Delays like the ones that hit "Twilight Princess" and "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" from throwing a monkey wrench into their ability to foster interest in the title, instead waiting until the Game's far enough along in Development that such an event is much less likely, so your ultimate point still stands.

@SiDCrAzY: Ehrm, did you see today's conference? Metroid Other M was announced for sometime in 2010. That's NOT "very close to release date".

I am not trying to troll here, but I have had it with Nintendo. The only thing that I got excited about was the Team Ninja partnership for the next Metroid. That SHOULD be awesome but unless the WiiMotion Plus is spot on, it won't be. They are doing NOTHING exciting at all this year!

Oh wait, I forgot... you would rather beef up a DS game and shovel it over to the Wii than come up with something completely new. Congrats on SMG2 tho! I hear it is 90% all new!! That's probably the most completely new game you have put out since....since....SMG1!!!

It is extremely sad that the best thing on their horizon is an announcement of a "hopeful" announcement of a game that won't see the light of day for at least 2 years.

@SiDCrAzY: If they announce it next year, I got a bad feeling their gonna do what they did with TP and just eventually have it pushed back for the new "Wii HD" that will probably have motionplus built in. I'm sure Nintendo loved what they did with TP, as much as fans hated it. They served a blockbuster title for 2 systems, and both versions sold fairly well since I'm sure many people who wanted to play TP and couldn't with the Wii shortage ended up getting the GC one anyways.

Shame they didn't attempt to re-assure gamers and the press that one was indeed in development at the actual press conference.
