They are NOT ending online service, they're ending stage/screenshot UPLOADS. (Not even the downloads, those are still happening.)

You have to think--if every person who bought a copy of the game uploaded just one stage, they'd have MILLIONS at this point--enough that, at a rate of one a day, would last them years. It doesn't make sense to keep hoarding them.

Nintendo is a joke when it comes to modern gaming. The only reason they are successful is because they found a niche market and ran away with it. You can churn out crap, but as long as people are buying. You're a successful company.

The only thing Nintendo is good at is innovation in controller design. Which just gets rip offed and made better. D-Pad, Shoulder Buttons, Analog stick, Rumble. Have all been stolen and improved upon by other companies. The latest is motion control. Which MS just demonstrated can be done much better without a wiimote. So thanks Nintendo. You're still good for something.

@Raziel: A lot more people have had issues with random match then people who haven't had issues. Its pretty well known that its online play is broken. Which is a real shame, I would have played it a tonne more if it wasn't.

Nintendo just doesn't like online stuff and they couldn't care much about it as well...

@Aurongel: Well, the good news is that the actual online service isn't ending, just uploading snapshots/stages/replays, a feature hardly anyone uses. The funny news is that nobody read the article to realize that, and that most of them don't even play Brawl online anymore and will continue to think its offline for a good while.

@pslong9: Nobody uses these features. To be honest, they could take out half the online features in SSBB and it'd take a while for anyone to notice because most players only play the FFA matches.

@Minister of Fun: I've played many games online... and Smash Bros is an absolutely terrible online experience.

The "Play With Anyone" mode is an absolute joke, as you are likely match-made with people on the other side of the continent, and are forced to play with four people at once, only compounding the slow-down.

Playing with Friends is doable, but still a fairly painful endeavor, since I should be able to get a match going without having to jump through so many hoops, and then you STILL might have latency issues.

That being said, there's a lot of information that goes through a fighter like Smash Bros, which obviously doesn't have its code optimized for online play, but sheesh, is it ever disheartening.

I've managed it twice.. EVER. Once was good, the other horribly lagging, then the dozens of other times it just sat there searching for opponents but never finding them.

So how long until they shut down the multiplayer servers? With all the cash that Nintendo's floating around in, I never thought they'd EA us like this.

People say that you shouldn't have to pay for XBOX Live, but hey, at least it guarantees that shit like this don't happen.

They are not stopping the online infrastructure, they are not going to recive user generated data anymore, but they will still distribute the one they already collected, and you will still be able to send the stages and pictures and replay data to your friends or distribute it via internet... just not through the nintendo automatic updates. And you will still be able to play online, for whatever that's worth.

And yes, there's a problem with lag but that's a complain that could be made about almost every game that requires certain ammount of presition. I've had unplayable sesions of LittleBigPlannet due to the fact that other peoples internet conection sucked. The same has happened with me for brawl but with friends that have a good internet conection it works fine.

Still, the online in brawl is kind of barebones, it needed a lot of work and probably better matchmaking.

And, since I don't have any unfriendly codes, much less see the reason that I should need to coordinate offline for the online portion of a game, I have yet to be able to use the Smash Bros. online services period. Except for this one. Which they're shutting down. Nintendo need to take a stance on the internet that doesn't involve their constant assumption that the only thing it does is, apparently, rape defenseless children.

I think some people aren't reading this article correctly. Nintendo is NOT ceasing online support of Smash Bros. Brawl. You can still play online, and they still intend to send you a new level, snapshot, and replay every day you log in. They are simply NOT ACCEPTING new levels/snapshots/replays, likely because they have more than enough and now the uploads are just choking up the servers with data that will never, ever be used. If anything, there's a (slim) chance that stopping the upload service will actually IMPROVE the online services where it matters: actualy playing the game.

As sad as this is, it's probably the first major piece of news about this game since the end of the Dojo updates a month or so after the game launched over a year ago! I haven't played it in a long time, and this just gives me one more reason to stay away. I usually played single-player, and I tried to play online when it worked well, but nothing beats playing 3 people in the same room, yet it's impossible to have friends over for anything, much less to have them play your games!

Brawl is a victim of Nintendo's severely limited hardware and virtually nonexisting/broken online structure and community.

Don't get me wrong, Brawl is a good game, but its hard not to sit here and imagine what Brawl could have been if it were on 360 type of hardware and an online community/structure like Xbox Live.

Please note that I am well aware there is no chance in hell of Brawl being on an XBOX platform. I am just saying if it were on a system with comparable specs.

You can fudge it in a game like Mario Kart-allowing your kart to continue while the internet catches up-but not in a fighter. Fighters will always have this problem as long as we all have different internet connections.

Well I have to say this is an interesting choice but I'm not surprised. The online battles were what alot of fans were looking for and it lagged. I guess people just moved on. As this doesn't mean the end of multiplayer it does take a good chunk of fun away from it.

@Z33RO: Yeah, I'd expect something like that maybe from a third party, but Nintendo? Perhaps the company has a justifiable reason, but right now it just points to a company which looks at on-line gaming and data sharing as an after thought and nothing else.

@Ueziel: If you figure however many million people bought the game...even one stage per person who owns the game would be enough to have one stage a game for what...eternity?

This game sold millions. Nintendo is swimming in gold. And they really think leaving those servers up just a year after release is such a drain?

Nintendo, get your Goddamn online services sorted full stop, Brawl is a fantastic game, but it's just unplayable due to lag, unless you're playing with friend in the same city.

@Z33RO: You can still build them and store them, you just can't upload them to the daily stage thing where they'd pick a stage and send it out to everyone. Although apparently they're still going to send out random stages.

It might be due to the fact that people were uploading hacked brawl stages with the brawl pc level editor that could freeze the game if they were played.

Why? Underused? Crappy implementation? Tools just weren't there?

Answers Nintendo! We demand them!

i feel the same will be for LittleBigPlanet...user generated content is an endless possiblity and too much space taken up on servers.

@Z33RO: The ability to create levels is built into the game, but the server to upload levels to costs money to run/maintain, and Nintendo probably decided that it wasn't worth the cost.

So, you can still create your own levels/share them on HD cards, but you can't upload them online.
