Sony Starts “Official Licensing Program”

Today Sony Computer Entertainment announced plans to expand its “Official Licensing Program” for PlayStation peripherals and accessories for the PSP, PS2 and the PS3.

Sony explains, “By entering into a licence agreement with SCE through this program, peripheral and accessory manufacturers will gain access to technical documentations necessary for designing and creating variety of licensed products for PlayStation platforms.”

The pictured “Official Licensed Product logo” will appear on product packaging as a Good House Keeping Seal of Approve of sorts — that the product lives up to PlayStation standards.

    @sunpop: someone will do that, because they can ;)

    I'm kidding of course. but seriously, I hope MS will do the same with accessories for Xbox360 (I mean licensing etc.).

  • sunpop

    @panopticon:

    why!

  • R_Shackelford

    @R_Shackelford: ... Hopefully, however, the distribution of "technical documentation" will allow robust feature sets (though the manufacturing quality could still be crap).

    @Black-Dog-Howls: Sony headphones are not "licensed" product. They are manufactured by Sony. Even licensed accessories are still "off brand," they've just got a license to put a Sony logo on it. It could still be crap, it depends on the standards of the Sony licensing department.

    @spannu: My Logitech Wireless controller was Officially Licensed, and had the PlayStation logo front and center on the controller and the official face buttons.

  • Rask

    So peripheral makers will have to charge the 25% Sony markup at retail as well??

  • DrXym

    I wonder if Activision's recent bitching had anything to do with this program and what they wanted out of it for their own Guitar Hero / Tony Hawk peripherals.

    DrXym

  • KyleNichol

    They should focus on their other points of licensing, like sorting out legal issues so more PSone Classics can be licensed for the PSN.

  • tylerstyle

    @psycoking: Yeah, but as the news here suggests, they will open it up for a little cashiola. $$$$

  • Zefir

    @UncleMark: Their arcade sticks, and rock band bass are phenomenal.

  • VenomIreland

    @UncleMark: Styli, would be right I think, if it was stylos it would be stylii.

  • Showmeyomoves!

    @Black-Dog-Howls: Nintendo SOQ already made a world of difference (see jallen's reply).

    Showmeyomoves!

  • spannu

    @Black-Dog-Howls: How often do you look on a package for the "Works with Windows" or "Works with Mac" logos? If there was Sony branding it would be one thing, but this is just a little logo that gets tacked onto a corner of the box.

    @N●Gage Croal: Bluetooth is an open standard. How the PS3 handles bluetooth signals is not. Sony probably has that bit of info patented and locked up tight.

  • UncleMark

    @Sweetchorizo: The tips weren't as smooth as they should have been and ended up scratching the screen. Yes, I should've had a screen protector, but still, they were pretty sucky styli. Is it styli? Styluses? I don't know.

  • N●Gage Croal

    @tylerstyle:
    Yeah, I never understood that. Bluetooh is an open standard, right? Why can't third-parties make Bluetooth-enabled PS3 controllers?

  • tylerstyle

    Yes!!!! All I need now are damned Controllers for the music games, without the need of a Dongle. I HATE that.

  • Sweetchorizo

    @UncleMark: aren't they just plastic pens how can you not approve somthing that only needs to be pointy and plastic.

  • psycoking

    @psycoking: *start selling overpriced*

    Curse you Kotaku and your lack of an edit button!!!

    psycoking

  • N●Gage Croal

    @UncleMark:
    The Official Nintendo Seal means the same thing today as it did back when it was called the "Official Nintendo Seal of Quality":
    "We're pretty sure this won't blow up your system... oh, and we get licensing fees from this. Whoohoo!"

  • hazelnut - RIP Michael Jackson

    @UncleMark: The newest product they have are the SFIV arcade sticks. Check that out.

  • psycoking

    I guess this means third party wireless controllers?

    Either that or more companies are going to start overpriced USB cords as PS3 charger cables.

    psycoking

  • jallen

    @Black-Dog-Howls: Yeah, but remember that Nintendo's official seal of quality originally served two purposes.

    1) Reassure people who were still unnerved about the mountains of crap that were coming forth just prior to the '84 crash. "See? We've given it our seal. That's proof it's not E.T."

    2) got them a cut of developer's revenues. "Want our Seal? Gotta be a licensee...and here's the terms."

    I doubt if Sony's worried at all about point 1, but they might be looking to get a cut of revenue from third party accessory manufacturers by offering a Seal of Quality.

    jallen

  • hazelnut - RIP Michael Jackson

    @UncleMark: Like that Simpsons episode with that Krusty seal of approval.

  • Jellopnik

    I have car seats that are Sony playstation branded. They even have that seal on it.

    Jellopnik

  • Black-Dog-Howls

    @spannu: Not really. Think about headphones for a second.

    Normal people might buy the off brand stuff but people that care about quality don't even think about clicking the Amazon link or even looking at the product description for some shoddy brand. They go straight for the Sony, AudioTechnica, etc. etc.

    Officially licensed stuff can make a world of difference.

    ...unless you're Nintendo's official seal of quality.

    Black-Dog-Howls

  • UncleMark

    @BiddyBalboa: I haven't bought any MadCatz products in a long time. Not since my brothers MadCatz PS1 controller'd d-pad broke off. Are they still as bad as they used to be?

  • BxB402

    So Sony is finally getting up on themselves for all the random shit they pump out that never sells as much as anyone else that has a console.

    ::troll::

  • UncleMark

    @hazelnut - RIP Michael Jackson: You posted RIGHT before me. I just hope that Sony actually tries out all of the products before they put the seal on them. I got some DS styluses that had the Nintendo seal on them. They were CRAP!

  • spannu

    @N●Gage Croal: All the Logitech stuff fits under this category. However, they don't have any Sony logos on the actual product, so if this is also only on the package it seems pointless.

    spannu

  • zach a mac rack alack

    @UncleMark: 10 days.

    zach a mac rack alack

  • BiddyBalboa

    does that mean ps3 madcatz controllers

  • UncleMark

    How long till this goes the way of the Nintendo Seal of Quality and starts to mean nothing?

  • hazelnut - RIP Michael Jackson

    Like that Nintendo Seal of Approval thing like back in the days?

  • NitroAML

    Is this for third party companies that make accessories? Like Hori? Or will it just be for PlayStation-made gear?

  • N●Gage Croal

    Um... haven't they don't this already?

    I have a few things that have a reflective emblem on them saying they're officially licensed...

    Am I missing something here?

  • wazzzup16

    Yay?
