Sony’s E3 Announcements

@ShadowOdin finally got a copy of Suikoden III. Is upset wit...:
"Perhaps they should try and tie GoW and Heavenly Sword into each other somehow."

That right there is sheer brilliance. The gameplay can remain as brutal, furious, and bloody as per the usual. Have a new lead character. Maybe even make Kratos the antagonist this time (especially in the direction the story is going). It would be the perfect continuance of the story.

Both Microsoft and Sony had a good showing. However I did like how "to the point" Microsoft's was. In the end the PS3 and 360 showed a very similar lineup of games.

    360:
    Shadow Complex
    Joy Ride
    Crackdown 2
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Splinter Cell Conviction
    Forza 3
    Halo ODST
    Halo Reach
    Alan Wake
    Metal Gear: Rising
    Natal

    PS3:
Ratchet and Clank Furute, A Crack in Time
    Heavy Rain
    Uncahrted 2 Among Thieves
    MAG
    God Of War 3
    Agent
    Final Fantasy XIV: Online
    Modnation Races
    The Last Gardian
    Gran Turismo 5
    Motion Controller

@Ricardo Freitas: I didn't mention many things. I like Uncharted, I like Mass Effect 2, but really, I thought five paragraphs was more than enough already.

Kratos can collect enemies like a katamari and then send them flying!!!!! i see a new franchise potential here.

So GoW3, A new Ico game, GT5, new Metal Gear, Final Fantasy VII, XIII, and XIV all being the biggest announcements are not sequels?

@authorityzro: You can still get a PSP-3k. You just have more options now. You have "Freedom of choice" and no one ever died from options right?

"I'll say it again in the land of the free
    Use your freedom of choice
    Your Freedom of Choice"

"In ancient Rome, there was a poem,
about a dog, who found two bones,
    He picked at one
    He licked the other
    He went in circles
    He dropped dead"

  • Ehardergardens

@Pepek: sadly their titles are not big sellers... so for the bulk it's COD MW2 HALO and GOW3

  • BlueToast was a jerk(is now an A

@PsycheE: Oh man when Playonline first came out the UI was mesmerizing. It looked amazing.

  • Miguel Lescano

What about ModNation Racers? Kotaku has been silent about this awesome game.

    Miguel Lescano

  • Aurongel

While I appreciate everything M$ is doing to bolster Live as a service with features such as Twitter, Last.fm, and Facebook integration, I can't help but notice that their game showcase was quite lacking...

All I see are sequels (and sequels to sequels). I'm sure Lost Planet 2, Crackdown 2, Halo ODST, Halo Reach, Assassins Creed 2, and any others will all be great. But Sony really hit a homer with game variety...

Shooters and sequels keep me entertained for a while, but variety keeps me coming back for more

    @mikeleddy83:
Unless, maybe just maybe, both of these wind up leap frogging Nintendo's wiimote, which at this point, both of them SEEM to be doing.

  • Jaems

Sony's conference was my favorite of all of them, I was extremely satisfied by the exuberant amount of games they had to show off.

One in particular that I was a bit skeptical about was the Modification Racers or somethin like that. After watching in action, it looked like it would be great fun to be had, especially with my nephews and such.

Also, GoW 3, Uncharted 2, Ratchet and Clank, FFXIII.
The Last Guardian is just automatic WIN.

  • Stymie99

    @Gloibin:
So many fanboy proclamations in there to consider...

I will go with just this one challenge, how were you able to determine that games from Squeenix and Rockstar in which they mentioned a name only are already blockbusters?

Did you hop in to your Delorean and travel to the future and now your being so kind as to report back to us?

  • Xaif

@Everyone: I find it funny how people are backing up their statements with 'evidence' when in actual fact they're just their opinions.

Everything's always a conflict >_> Can't everyone just settle on the fact that both (well all 3) companies had decent conferences, because, well, they actually did? No one did 'better' than anyone.

  • Slagathorian

@Ubersoldat19: weird character design, and a DMC copycat.

  • jamesjohnson01

@Ricardo Freitas: You are retardedly making game comparisons and you should kindly step out of the conversation.

  • jamesjohnson01

@naturcrafte: You need a reality check, the game studios developing exclusively for Sony have an incredible track record, such as Quantic Dream, Incognito, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Rockstar North, Team Ico, Polyphony Digital, MediaMolecule, Atlus, Sucker Punch, Square-Enix and quite a few others.

It's unlikely these games will "totally suck".

Your opinion of Project Natal is simply that. Your opinion. All we saw was some practiced, scripted programs and a camera that does pretty much what the Eyetoy has been doing, only more accurate.

And PS3's motion control takes advantage of that PLUS controllers, because eventually YOU WILL NEED A BUTTON unless you want to run around in dungeons all day jumping and climbing in your living room.

Get your head out of the ground and realize Sony talked more about games than Microsoft did, who went on with celebrity apperances and raving about Rock Band's ONE exclusive song, to a couple of demos of either multi-platform games, or a rare exclusive like Alan Wake, Splinter Cell and Forza 3.

  • mikeleddy83

    @Ricardo Freitas: EDGE gave it 7/10 ;)

  • mikeleddy83

@edhe (xbl): In my eyes Nintendo did all the hard work so whoever is closest to the Wiimote automatically wins, though both are fucked because nobody's going to buy one (especially the 32X owners out there).

  • mikeleddy83

@azr: I doubt they needed it either, if I wanted either Xbox or PS3's motion stuff I'd have already bought a Wii anyway. On the one hand it'll likely bring some Wii third party games to the PS3 and on the other hand this trio of motion buddies will kill off onlive before it's out (good plan big 3!).

  • WPack911

@robpe36: This game has me more excited then any Kart racer has since Mario Kart 1. It looks awesome on all fronts. :D

  • WPack911

Ah yes scenes from the winning presser right here, the most games, most exclusives, and the most precise and practical motion controller to date.

"Not only that Sony actually had a LIVE tech demo, as opposed to MS virtual tech demo."

If you believe this, you didn't see the MS conference. They demo'd the tech, as well.

They showed navigating the NXE menus, a game like breakout in 3D, and a painting demo.

  • FraGNeM

    @FP_slomo788:

Might as well take FFXIV and probably Agent off that list of Sony exclusives then. The first is definitely PC-bound, and I'd be surprised if the second one wasn't as well.

  • Ricardo Freitas

    @Ricardo Freitas: edit:
Honestly I feel that natal was way more like eyetoy than the sony controller, in the MS conference all I saw was this [i41.tinypic.com] the sony motion controller looks like it can be used for hardcore games.

Interesting how you don't mention uncharted 2, the game blew everything shown at the MS conference.

I don't give a tree fuck about Wow factors I'm in this for the games not the marketing, MS had MGS rising?that's a multi platform...great. Sony just blew me up with content.

    Ricardo Freitas

  • authorityzro

@chamoo232: But their is no UMD drive. While you may consider it useless, their is no backwards compatibility. Plus, Sony definitely isn't paying the same for production costs without the UMD.

@TRT-X: when they first started showing it off, I couldn't help but think it looked rediculous. Exclusive? Who cares? Then they started showing off the gameplay, then the track creation. I'm sold now. That game looked like tons of fun. I will buy Modnation Racers

  • Ricardo Freitas

@[i41.tinypic.com] the sony motion controller looks like it can be used for harcore games.

Microsoft's delivery? I felt like Microsoft was talking down to me the whole presentation. They stood there like they were superior with their tone of voice and posturing.

It just bugged me the whole time. This especially when the final guy went up to talk motion. He just seems like a dick with a "I have this and this, do u? Uhh, no, well you are not good enough to be in the room with me, excuse me while I go talk to a television screen boy"

Funny you say that. On the Natal marketing video where the girl plays breakout with the balls, when she celebrates, looking at her feet and the screen, the game looses tracking and does a "bottom of the foot" move.

It was the fast motion that caused it to loose tracking, and the Sony one can move as fast as the player.

  • FP_slomo788

@FP_slomo788: Also forgot Ratchet and Clank.

    Jesus so many games!

  • FP_slomo788

@Ricardo Freitas: Why no love for MAG? Also there's a couple of multiplats in there (Alan Wake, ME2).

Also, one thing to remember. Sony's games are divided between 2009 and 2010. Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain and MAG are all supposed to be out this year. That's on top of Killzone 2 and inFamous, two blockbusters already.

I think only ODST and Forza 3 are supposed to be out this year for the 360, anyone care to correct me?

And finally, the only exclusive that was actually unveiled by MS was Halo Reach. Everything else was either multiplatform (MGS) or already unveiled in the past.

Sony announced Last Guardian, FFXIV and Agent yesterday.

And to anyone saying these games might suck. Come on. While that's true, if you're not going to give Rockstar and Team Ico their credit, how can you flash any exclusive Microsoft might have?

  • Piblo

    @Ricardo Freitas:
I have a feeling when it finally comes out, it wont work as well as everyone thinks. Lot of factors come into play like lighting, clothing color, person color, language recognition, TV distance to see whole body, etc etc.

  • Gray665

I thought Sony had a great showing. If you are a fan of their franchises then you definitely were not disappointed. I would say the same thing about MS & Nintendo too. Really I think all 3 did really well and people who own the respective consoles should be very happy.

Damn....there are a lot of 360 fanboys on Kotaku. I still like the site, but you all just need to stop being blinded by fanboyisms. The MS conference and SONY conference were both amazing and had their fair share of extreme surprises.....but a fanboy on either side can't admit that. And for the record: Natal looks very advanced and cool, but I simply can't see any REAL hardcore uses for it.

I'm impressed by the almost precise sony's motion controller can do.

Natal on the other hand is quite interesting. Plus you just need to buy one, for multiplayer, etc.

For Sony, does it come in pair? Otherwise, its gonna cost more if you go two player with two mo-controller. And considering how sony prices their product, it ain't gonna be cheap.

@TRT-X: Yeah, but if we stop seeing Kratos, it at least gives them the ability to renew certain aspects without fans getting to rabid.
Perhaps they should try and tie GoW and Heavenly Sword into each other somehow. Hearing that it is the end of something is at least significant to a degree. It means we'll get a finale when we beat the last boss and not a cliffhanger. I am so tired of cliffhangers.

  • Pepek

@forzak: 1. Can you explain to me how Natal is better at controlling games than wiimote, gamepad or Sony's wiimote-ripoff?
Because all I saw from Natal was some super casual games and driving a car without a wheel?
Is that really the way how you want to play your games? Can you imagine playing for example Gran Turismo with imaginary wheel? Ever heard of immersion? Because to me Natal looked like a complete opposite of immersion. You have no (force) feedback, no rumbling.
Or how about a shooter? Can you imagine playing an FPS without a controller by just waving your hand in the air making imaginary pewpew?

I just don't understand why people are excited about Natal when it comes to games. For casual games, controlling of menus or other stuff like that, sure, it's gonna be cool, like Minority Report, but playing games?
    No. Just, no.

    2. Sony has Gran Turismo and from what I saw in that Forza trailer, with all those spinning cars I think I'll wait for Gran Turismo...
Mass Effect is multiplat (PC) and M$ didn't announce it on their press conference (at least I didn't see it and I watched the live stream)
Sony announced a LOT more games than M$. A LOT more. And The Last Guardian makes Sony win by default.

3.MGS or to be correct MGR is for PS3, PC and X360 and it's some action game, so not even proper MGS game. The true MGS game is coming to PSP. And with Big Boss! (that's another win by default for Sony)

    4. That's true. Their presentation was more flashy and it obviously worked to fool people. Smoke & Mirrors they say?

    5. You mean Facebook and Twitter? Yup those were nice. Now, how about some games when we are at E3? No? Ok, maybe next time.

And of course it's all my own (unbiased) opinion.

  • naturcrafte

@BarbeQueQ: It doesn't matter if 300+ games are coming out on a console if 95% of them are going to suck. You can't declare a win just because you have a large volume of games coming in for the console you clearly have a hard on for. If you consider the number of quality games presented by MS compared to SONY and how much more impressive (technologically speaking and given its potential) Project Natal is than the Sony Waggle Wands, than you would see the truth of the matter. Otherwise, you need to pull the fanboy wool from over your eyes.

I like Sony and Microsoft. I've been happy with products from both companies. Both had great showings, but MS's was a bit better in my mind.

If you saw some games presented by Sony that you are more excited about, okay. I get it. But, simply announcing "we have x number of games in developement" ONLY means "we have x number of games in development." It does not mean "we have x number of games in development that are all going to be triple A quality."

The PS2 was a great console, legendary, that had thousands of games come out for it. What percentage of those games were worth buying? Or even renting for that matter? Maybe 3-5% of them.

    naturcrafte

  • TRT-X

@Joneildu: and went back to real E3 roots by showing some of the most amazing trailers of the show

    Not trailers...teasers. There's a huge difference.

I haven't even mentioned "The last Guardian", "Final Fantasy XIV", and the new Rockstar game.

How can you mention them? We know nothing about them...

  • TRT-X

@我不是中国人。: Same here. As a Wii/360 owner, that was the one game out of the whole presentation that I was truly jealous of. It looked like a buttload of fun.

  • TRT-X

@Gloibin: Yes, exclusive blockbusters that they didn't say anything about aside from a name drop.

And how can you proclaim The Last Guardian to be the most epic game in years with just a trailer? And GoW the most instense action game in years? You mean the most epic game since the last GoW...which it will be exactly like?

    Okay fanboy. Whatever.

  • TRT-X

@ShadowOdin finally got a copy of Suikoden III. Is upset wit...: I'm pretty sure we heard that about Halo 3. And as we know that series is still alive and well generating titles.

Trust me, they will make more titles within the GoW series...even if it doesn't have Kratos. The franchise is a money maker.

  • AwesomeExMachina

I still felt a bit flat about Sony's performance, it may have been less in what they revealed, and more in their delivery. Microsoft seemed to keep their points to quick trailers and gameplay segments, with only minor stops for programmers to jabber on about innovation. Sony seemed intent on bludgeoning us with montages and sales numbers.

Overall, Sony had a good conference and I agree with everything said above. I literally LOLed when the motion controller was first revealed. But after some show-off, I was only mildly worried about it.

  • forzak

@NexusSIX: Hmm, a few fanboy-ish comments here. My (unbiased) two cents on why Microsoft takes the cake:

    1) Project Natal - while far from being implemented, this kind of motion technology is far more complex and meaningful than Sony's or Nintendo's, in terms of potential application.

    2) Important, quality games announced. While I read about Sony announcing 35 exclusives, I worry how many of those would be actually worthy of a purchase. As it is, you only get say 1 AAA title out of every 10 - 15 games or so. Forza, the Halo games, Splinter Cell and Mass Effect seem like sure winners to me. And so does MGS...

    3) Which is another nice power-punch by M$. Bringing MGS to the 360. What better place to announce it, too. Granted, I'd rather see a new exclusive IP instead...but the promise of something great to come will do.

    4) Of course, Micro$oft has teh 1337 presentation skills.

    5) While minor, the announcement of new services for NXE and Live just gives more reason to choose it,over PSN.

I think Sony did well coping with the PSP and PS3. Microsoft benefitted from a single focus. I actually am excited about Sony's games, but save for the established (Uncharted, GoW3, the Rockstar game, etc.) titles, i'm sure only 10 % of the games announced will be truly worth my time.

    @dgkz0idberg: more fool you then.

It's not about copying motion control from the wii, it's about expanding your audience by making the interface better.

Natal does that with the dash, games, media, messaging - sony have gone for the the hyper-performant (and shoogly) gamer peripheral.

I look forward to boomblox on the 'next gen' now though.

  • thatcreepyguy

I've gotta say I'm a little disappointed by all the 2010 stuff being shown by all the companies. Its great and all to see the new games, but its kind of hard for me to get excited about a game that is a that far away from release. I'll get excited about it then in a few months I'll forget about it then they have to work to remind me of the game and get me excited all over again.

Overall, I think that MS probably had the best conference of the show. I'm not big into twitter and facebook, but I sure as hell know that all the young gamers who are coming into gaming are totally into that stuff. If they can pull off Natal like they showed, it will definitely be a game changer for them.

Sony showed a lot of great games, but I feel that a lot of them are only going to excite people who already have a PS3 and/or PSP and not draw new gamers to their systems.

The PSP Go is too damn expensive - The DSi (whom they are competing against and losing to) is priced at $169, the PSP is $169 so how do they conclude that the world is ready for a $249 PSP handheld? Yeah, I know it has new features, but price trumps all.

Nintendo didn't really need to have a conference as far as I'm concerned. New Galaxy and Metroid are pretty cool, not too sure about 4-player mario and the pulse meter looks gimmicky as hell.

    thatcreepyguy

  • edhe (xbl)

@elmorepow: But sony doesn't have MS code.

Natal is what the eyetoy would evolve to with a proper idea behind it.

The concept of removing the controller is what's vital, wheras sony seem to be adding even more ?

It looks nice, and impressive, but like the rest of the ps3 - over engineered and missing the window.

  • The Swearing Gramps

    @dgkz0idberg:
I dunno. Because people are buying it? You gotta admit those wii sales figures make Sony and Microsoft green with envy. Hell if I was them, I'd be wondering how I could get that sweet sweet lucre too.

  • The Swearing Gramps

    @mitch_93:

Don't go dissing those dildos. Do you have any idea what this can do for hentai games? The Japanese are going to be years ahead of the Americans with this tech. Imagine shoving one of those dildos inside a catgirl. Now THAT"S JAPANESE.

@Beyond-Infinity: My sarcasm detectorz, let me show you them.

  • NexusSIX

@LittleDeadEpic!: agreed completely. I will give MS the credit though for a better presentation. I mean wow, they had Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono & Paul McCartney! they were blabbering morons (as far as gaming goes), that really looked out of place, and had no idea what they were talking about...... but wow!

  • Islandkiwi

The Final Fantasy games never do a lot for me, but this upcoming one (13) feels shoddy. I think it's the voice acting and scripting of it, because obviously the graphics are great. That being said, the announcement that FF 14 was a new MMO took me right out of the interest department.

I'm not a God of War guy, but I've played them...this one looked too similar to the God of War 2 Demo for my tastes. I'm happy for the players that they're not changing the gameplay, it looks similar to the earlier games, but still...not interested.

The motion sticks...I realize that both MS and Sony are still in development stage, but I like the potential of MS's product more than what Sony is showing. I dislike that they're going to use the Eyetoy, I think that hinders their growth in the future. The Eyetoy seems to be mostly discarded by Sony anyway, it's been a while since I've seen an app for it.

The PSP section...I'm not a portable gamer, but I don't understand why you would create a new PSP that goes memory only. The people who already own the psp won't buy it because they can't play what they already own. People new to the psp would be better off buying the older version so that they can get cheaper used games for it.

I did find several things to get excited about in Sony's conference, and loved that they're doing these big conferences again (last year was a bummer). They had a nice, solid presentation. I did feel that MS had a bit more wow factor.

@NexusSIX: at the end of the day.. as a gamer the presentaton doesnt mean shit... sony deliverd on the GAMES and thats all that matters... i swear some people really forget that

  • BarbeQueQ

@Fergie24: What bothers me is that people just can't give reasonable arguments as to why MS's conference was better than Sony's? Maybe that is because there are none? Well maybe. Let me tell you why I think Sony won, though.

It's all about the games. Bam! Sony nailed.
360+ games coming to their consoles this year and 35 exclusives! Again, all of this is coming this fiscal year. 35 exclusives games - that's quite impressive but what is more impressive is that the mojority of those games are not FPS. FUCK! FPS is the genre of this generation I hate most. Well on consoles anyway. I've had enough of those mediocre and overrated piles of shit. Of course, everyone once in a while there are some real good shooters such as Bioshock but those are not the norm. Anyway, my point is that there's a great variety of genres coming to Playstation and quite frankly I'm excited to play them all one day(maybe not all but most).

With new games new hardware is also coming. The PSP Go!
Alright, I admit it's very pricy for a handheld. Especially considering that it's not the successor of the PSP but a new iteration that is not superiour.
But you have also to consider that it has 16 GB of HDD, it's smaller and seeems very solid for what it is.
I personally ain't gonna buy it anytime soon but it's nice to see Sony lead the gaming console and hand held industry into the age of digital distribution.

Although things were leaked already they still managed to deliver jaw dropping surprises.
And while leaks spoil the fun of announcements they don't make 'em less awesome. That new Team ICO games for instance, isn't every fan of them pleased to see that leak being confirmed? Imagine how much of a bummer if would have been if the game turned out to be a fake.
And I think FFXIV speaks for itself.

As I've said earlier, this new motion controller is something gamers should be looking forward to.
But let's just say MS's and Sony's motion "devices" are very different and they won't be competing.
Sony won't even be competing with Nintendo. That's ridiculous.

It wasn't all great tho'. What I didn't like were those charts. But then again, E3 isn't just for gamers but the industry. And I can see why what the point of the charts was.

They should have added another hour to the conference to show off some of their upcoming exclusives like Heavy Rain. A release date for GT5 would have been great, too. >_>'

Sony gets an A- from me.

  • elmorepow

I was extremely impressed with all the stuff sony brought to show. I personally got my biggest kicks out of Peace Walker and motion control - which seems to be outstandingly accurate and cool. Well, call me a fanboy but sony wins hands down.

@Tugsy: I was very impressed with Natal demos and stuff, but after all, when you start to think about Natal, it really is just another eye-toy.

I bet PS3's improved EyeToy can do all those tricks, but Natal cannot do the controllers that uses camera - since it's Sonys patent, and seems to work extremely well.

Microsoft's, for the 2nd year in a row, huge announcement was a game that has been on the PS for years, and was a multi-plat announcement. E3, for me, is about games. Not gimmicky peripherals that everyone will grow tired of in months. The MS camera isn't going to revolutionize anything. Gamers don't want to play games with their arms, their legs, and their feet. Voice recognition is difficult enough to perfect without glitching, for facial recognition to work properly, your room will have to be lit up like a hollywood studio, and even then, BAM! it'll glitch. On the same token, I was disappointed that Sony felt the need to announce a motion controller.

Strictly on games, Sony was so far ahead of everyone this year, it wasn't even close. They showed a renewed dev interest in the PSP. Announced a couple of huge exclusives, and went back to real E3 roots by showing some of the most amazing trailers of the show. I think that Uncharted 2 might have been the most stunning trailer of the show. GoW2 was simply unbelievably disgusting and awesome. I haven't even mentioned "The last Guardian", "Final Fantasy XIV", and the new Rockstar game.

@Fergie24: MS had a better presentation as far as entertainment went, but Sony had a more impressive line-up of thing to come but somewhat lack luster presentation. If they had some lasers and maybe dancing monkeys..... then we woulda had a show.

As far as motion control I feel more confident in Sony's controller, because we know that it will be 1:1 motion and we know it will be responsive. We dont know if MS will work in poor lighting conditions, as well as a busily designed living room. Not only that Sony actually had a LIVE tech demo, as opposed to MS virtual tech demo.

  • Powerslave

    Oops typo, 264 PSP & PS3 games.

  • Powerslave

    @Fergie24: I don't recall MS announcing 364 games for it's platforms.

    35 exclusives
    100 PS2 games
    164 PSP & PS3 games..

Clearly on content Sony wins in my eyes.

  • BarbeQueQ

@TitillatedOcelot: Definitely. I don't know what it was but for some reason I couldn't help it but scream like a 14 years old tween. I think it was the setting and atmosphere. I really liked it. I cannot wait to get my hands on it. Really, this might be the first MMO to get me addicted to it since Guild Wars.

    Good job, Sony.

On a related note: I like how Sony's pushing the MMO genre on the PS3. Really a step forward(for consoles).

    @azr:

Actually this motion controller is something I'm looking forward to. While the other two seem to be very gimmicky this one looks like it could be actually USEFUL in proper games. A Zelda Clone on PS3? Hell yeah! Imagine fighting like that dude. Just thinking of it makes my pants wet.
Ya....MotionPlus and Sony's Controller are very similar but last time I checked the Wii controller wasn't able to make out your position.

  • PsycheE

@KillerCRS: Its, in a sense, sequel to the FFXI IP, with three colored mages being the only common ground between FFXI and any other games of the franchise. It is a whole different beast that started years ago, when Playonline's UI was mesmerizing.

PSP Go looked great with the sudden floodgate of games accompanying the relase, the price? not so great. Sony had a great conference, all I needed to see was Mr. Am I rite and Team Ico doing their laundry. Sony failed at pacing, just all kinds of paper mache collages that bored the mind. E3'09 was satisfactory enough and is definitely a good start to resuscitate the convention.

One more thing, can we please get hosts who can crack a joke in the 21st Century?, these old antique quips and one liners are not getting you any points, just sympathetic chuckles from the crowd.

    PsycheE

  • dgkz0idberg

    @MDX: im gonna say it:
why do ms and sony think we want their wii copies so much? i mean, i usually sit really narrow in front of my 360/ps3 screen (like i was playing pc) so there really is no room for me to be seen by a camera in full.

this gimmick fad HAS to end now.

  • Gloibin

Unbiased conclusion: Everyone wins. Best E3 in years. Has completely determined that the bulk of my budget for the next 2 years will be for gaming.

Fanboy conclusion: Sony wins. They, undoubtedly, showed the most broad range of console exclusives. They made the PSP legitimate again. They shut the fuck up during their demos. They refuted 360's (multiplatform) Metal Gear spinoff with Peacewalker and renewed both Squeenix and Rockstar's devotion to Sony platforms with exclusive blockbusters. They showed exclusives like The Last Gaurdian (possibly the most epic game in years) and God of War 3 (possibly the most intense action game in years). They didn't even have to say anything about PSN games, because Microsoft has already admitted XBLA defeat. They showed that they weren't lagging as far behind as people thought they were with motion control (when it comes down to it, everything we saw at E3 regarding motion control was just tech demo shenanigans). So why don't you have a PS3 yet?

@Muppsatan: Haha no they didn't but I mean things are a bit loopy. I myself was and always will be a Nitnendo player even if I forced myself onto their games after the playstation. Yep I actually forced myself then came to love Nintendo after owning a Playstation as my first ever Christmas console.

@Fergie24: Less concentrated win perhaps, but that's because they have two consoles they had to split their time between.

  • Pepek

@holypromise: The Last Guardian won the E3 on its own. They only needed to start the E3, show The Last Guardian and call it a day and start preparations for E3 2010.

  • MDX

I found Sony's conference to be extremely boring... I walked away like 3 times.

  • Muppsatan

@mitch_93: i sense some bitterness did sony cheat on you with another man?

@Fergie24: Underwhelming? Compared to Microsoft? Really?
Sony showed A LOT of awesome games.

    Microsoft did what? This.
    [i41.tinypic.com]

Well, I'll definitely remember the M$ E3 2009 press conference, just like I remember the Nintendo's E3 2008 press conference. But I don't think they'd like me to remember it like this.

  • Scoogums

Very impressed by Sonys conference, and I'm really looking forward to the year to come.

I want that game, The Last Guardian? The one with the FUCKING ADORABLE MONSTER. I will play it for years even if it's terrible. Yeah, I'm weird like that.

    Scoogums

  • Muppsatan

@kitsuneconundrum: while yes that would be awesome i'd say Demon's Souls would be even greater with those controls.

  • skik08

i think if u compare the crowds at the conference. sony comes out on top. loud cheering and humourous. but my actual thoughts on their conference are that i think it went well, just well. they even ran out of time lol. the uncharted 2 video they showed was spectacular. no one can say that that game is not amazing. they SHOULD have showed some agency clips. even a trailer. but the fact that rockstar are making it means it will be awesome none the less. in my opinion sonys motion controller kicked the shit out of nintendo's motion plus thingy. and god of war 3.....well, i bet my life it will be game of the year.

  • ShadowOdin finally got a copy of

So people really feel the need to "meh" away at Sony's conference?
I for one expected them to bomb after Microsoft's spectacular show.
And as the first hour drew to a close I felt my suspicion being correct, with only Uncharted 2 and MAG surprising and the PSP Go falling flat due to a hefty pricepoint (guess I'll be getting that PSP-2000 or 3000 after all). And let's not even TALK about how they touted their own horn with a video service only avaliable in the U.S. I really felt slapped in the face over that one and I got almost depressed.
Then they started with all their surprising shit, Peace Walker, FFIV (though FUCK IT for being a main-series online-game when it ought to have it's own spin-off like all the other games that are not fit to be main-series), gameplay of Assassin's Creed 2, the MODnation kart-game and even the motion controller which made me facepalm at first, but won me over with its simple yet impressive performance. I REALLY like the precision on that thing.
Then one shouldn't forget The Last Guardian and God of War (which surprised me for the sheer fact that they said it was the last in the console-based trilogy; you never hear that anymore).

  • kitsuneconundrum

@TitillatedOcelot: then you should act weights to it. maybe something constructive will come out of it.

  • Tugsy

In terms of exclusives I thought Sony had nailed it when I was watching and saw Final Fantasy 14... then they added 'online' and I realised I didn't care.

Personally I was more impressed with the Microsoft Conference, if Natal lives up to it's hype it has a lot of potential to revolutionise the market.

  • mitch_93

Overpriced handheld they will waste using money on when they need it R&D will go the discoball dildo wiimote hack up and a flashy 2 hour press conference that probably cost a lot. Yep if there is one company who can waste money without a care when they need it it's Sony.

There's one thing I noticed that slightly disappointed me: during the PSN video presentation, Katamari Damacy Tribute got displayed... Aren't we supposed to have a full box retail version?
I can't wait for your review of the Namco-Bandai booth, guys! And if I may ask you, try to get some info at Sega about Yakuza 3's future (and Kenzan's), out of Japan.
Otherwise, well, the Last Guardian was indeed a jewel. Can't help but get emotional when I see that trailer...

Final Fantasy 14 dropped my jaw, as I had just finished saying to my wife that if such an online title were to emerge, we should give it a shot (I played FFXI in its NA infancy). I know FFXI is nowhere near as popular as WoW, but it has always held a spot in my heart as it was the MMO I cut my teeth on.

  • Ett

That what I thought about Microsoft. Same shit difference year

Probably the most substantive and comprehensive of the three conferences. They definitely have the best software lineup going into the latter half of 2009 and 2010, on multiple platforms no less. Good show!

  • Jurec

For me, Sony and Microsoft were quite on the same level, although as a Sony fanboy, I'd give Sony a 8/10 and Microsoft a 7.9/10 :P

  • mikeleddy83

@Stymie99: But then, as with that 32X mention, they're addons. The wii sells with its motion controller! Just like a blu-ray addon for 360 would be a bad idea or the removal of blu-ray from ps3. It's unfortunately not about the technology, at least from my perspective though I'll agree they're both good. As for the hard work comment, I'm trying to say this is a battle for the Wii's third party support as I doubt the developers would like to deviate much from their production schedules apart from slightly upgraded visuals, it's all about the lowest common denominator in games from my experience and both were a waste of conference time :)

  • azr

@imdstig: Yeah I'm sure Sony pulled this shit together in a day to counter MS' conference. That makes so much sense I can't believe I did not realize sooner.

  • Gringorilla

@naturcrafte: "It doesn't matter if 300+ games are coming out on a console if 95% of them are going to suck."

Funny how that argument didn't seem to matter when the 360 had the most games!

And I saw someone else pointing out that 1 out of every 10-15 games are any good. Perhaps true, but if you look at Sonys exclusives, I would say that about 1 in 4 or 5 are good. That means at least 7 good games, and some of them are bound to be excellent.
