Hands On

Splinter Cell Conviction Preview: A Smoother Operator

Ubisoft hadn’t shown Splinter Cell Conviction to the public in two years but brought it back impressively this E3. The game’s creative director said it could be tricky for us to play during an E3 demo. That didn’t scare us.

What has wowed people at E3 who have seen the new Conviction in action is how cinematic and how stylish it looks at every second. One striking visual signature are the giant mission goal text directions that appear to be digitally painted on the walls of buildings as you stalk through the game’s open-world levels. Imagine a mansion painted with full-story-high letters telling you to infiltrate it. Or imagine having your mission directives displayed as a black-and-white film projected dynamically on a bathroom wall on and around Sam and the guy he’s beating up.

But is stylishness what Sam Fisher and his world needed?

What Is It?
Splinter Cell Conviction is the fifth console Splinter Cell game, slated for an exclusive launch on the Xbox 360 later this year. When it was shown in 2007 it seemed to feature an unkempt Sam Fisher elbowing his way through a park in Washington D.C. A preview trailer for the revamped game leaked before E3, suggesting that the game had been changed and would be re-introducing some of the slickness of Sam in his super-spy prime

What We Saw
Brian Crecente and I both played part of a demo level set up by Ubisoft for E3. It opened with Sam Fisher beating up a guy in a bathroom before Sam’s objectives were displayed on the bathroom wall. This semi-interactive scene segued into a more traditionally playable game of hunting enemies — men on city streets and then inside a mansion, in this case — in order to set up the perfect stealth kills.

How Far Along Is It?
The game is set for a fall release, and the slice we played seemed to have most of the bells and whistles of a finished game.

What Needs Improvement?
The Teaching: I played the game in god mode, which helped me not die the many times I failed to sneak up on my enemies. Like all stealth games, playing the game “right” and playing it “wrong” are two very different things, and only one of them is fun. This game will need to teach players its tricky but impressive take on stealth in a clear manner in order for everything to click.

What Should Stay The Same?
Targeted Assassination: Splinter Cell Conviction’s core mechanic is a smart one that rewards a player’s effort for employing stealth tactics with striking rewards. There is a multi-step process. First, Sam must kill a bad guy — any bad guy in the open environment — using hand-to-hand combat. You can spot bad guys by stepping into the shadows. That desaturates colour from most of the world. Only enemies remain displayed in colour. Once Sam’s victim is killed Sam can then target other enemies for stealth assassinations. The number of enemies who can be targeted is determined by the weapon Sam wields. The pistol I had allowed two targets per time in assassination mode; other guns will permit four. I was able to have Sam creep into a dark mansion and look toward two enemies. Pressing a bumper button tagged each one with a circle over their head. Ideally, I would wait until both tagged victims were within Sam’s line of site. That could require some waiting. One in line, the circles above the bad guys’ heads would change colour and I’d press the Y button. Sam would go into a stylish, automated gun or hand-to-hand assassination animation, taking out both guys in one move sequence. Hard work, rewarded.

A Great Look: The game’s developers were inspired by some of the in-world floating text seen in the movie Man on Fire and the TV show Fringe. The result is a game world that has text and even movies that splash onto walls, showing the player what his or her motivation is or reminding them of the mission’s goals. The game also shows cinematics of levels during loading sequences and even makes some of its in-engine cutscenes interactive, like the opening one in the E3 demo’s bathroom that enables the player to have Sam drag the man he’s questioning to different parts of the room to see what pressing X does while they talk. (Dragging the guy to the urinal while pressing X is bad for the guy’s face, that’s for sure.)

Final Thoughts
Splinter Cell Conviction had been absent from the public eye for so long that it was easy to assume it had fallen apart. Instead, it appears to be coming together smartly, as a stealth game that allows the player to stage some terrific action scenes. Few games shown at the press conferences this week at E3 had as confident a visual design. Like many a Ubisoft game, there are strong ideas here. Let’s hope they make for a strong game.

    I was wondering what had happened to this game. The last trailer I saw was the one Stephen mentioned from E3 '07, where Sam Fisher is wondering around the park, flipping people over picnic tables and looking like a crazed, homeless Kenny Loggins.

    This game looks 1000x better than that.

  • Jonn

    @Zhal: 1. You have to earn it by killing enemies in hand-to-hand, which is harder.
    2. It's optional.

  • forzak

    @-Xehanort: More people still prefer it on the Xbox I guess. Remember last gen the series was launched for the Xbox?

    Still, sucks for gamers who only own one console (PS3 in this case).

    @parad0x360: Agree whole heartedly.

    @A_White_Nite Although I think Chaos Theory's spies vs. mercs gameplay was better than Pandora's, I am absolutely shocked that this type of innovative cat and mouse gameplay was abandoned by Ubi. I'm even more shocked that some other developer hasn't stolen the idea for themselves.

    This game looks amazing. Now I hope they bring back Chaos Theories vs multiplayer because they ruined the spies in DA with that stupid beeping that made being stealthy pointless. Id prefer the game to take some skill instead of being dumb down so everyone can play it. Also some of that Chaos Theory coop wouldnt hurt.

  • parad0x360

    @Dead Giveaway: They ruined the MP in double agent by nerfing the spies. That stupid radar beep made being stealthy useless. Hopefully its more like the MP in Chaos Theory where it actually took skill to play either class.

    @fatheadwilson:

    Gameplay was pretty unforgiving, uses more daytime stealth than I prefer. Also, the story could've used more development time; you're supposed to care about certain NPCs but you aren't really given the chance to.

    And the PC port was pretty bad, poorly optimized with a lot of bugs and a weird interface.

    They got some things right. The last mission and the epilogue after the credits were fun.

    But yeah, I agree with Jyuu, Chaos Theory was a fantastic game and it felt like Double Agent was a step backwards from that. Thankfully Conviction looks great, and I'm glad Sam's finally showing how much of a badass in combat he really is.

  • Chupakun uses Synonym Attack!

    I'm very, very excited about this one. The text on the environment thing is neat, reminds me of the Hitchcock film "North by Northwest". Loving the Bourne vibe as well; I've always wanted to stealth around in proper crowds (Assassin's Creed messed that up in that you were either invisible or not; an exaggeration of course, but you get the point). If this remains an exclusive, then there's yet another reason for me to get an Xbox 360.

  • UncleScrotar

    I'm very torn on this title. I've been a SC fan since the beginning, and while I'm not opposed to change, this seems like it may have broken the formula i enjoyed so much.

    At the same time, the new over the top action style plays very will and looks fantastic, but it just doesn't feel SC to me. I almost wish they'd make a spin off series and keep the original in tact (obviously throwing in evolutions that make the game more fun) as this feels just a little too Bourne Identity to me. Sure Sam Fisher's a bad ass, and anyone who's seen Taken can see the killer similarities, but it just feels a little too arcady/automated so far. Here's to hoping for a small tweak in balance and maybe a slight slowing of the pace...

  • paeper

    I like the projection thing, very Natural Born Killers.

  • wtf_G

    The in-game text printed along the environment looked amazing. It's so much more refreshing than the same ol' PDA missions or small white text in the corner of the screen.

    Along with cinematics played on the walls as well, it's a visually pleasing presentation to say the least.

    This game looks interesting, I really like the "Panic Room/Fringe"-Esque mission command placement. I wonder if the automatic kill thing will satisfy the urge. I am glad you mention it.

  • NeVeRMoRe666

    @Zhal: I think the point of this is to emphasize the stealth mechanic. It isn't at all that different from what other games have done in the past (Assassins Creed, - instinct kills in other games when you sneak behind them and slice their throat ect.) In the end, aren't all games simply reduced to just pressing buttons?

  • paydirt76

    I'm not concerned about whether or not they fade out becvause it seems like a fast-paced game and so I don't anticipate staring at them long.

    "slated for an exclusive launch on the Xbox 360 later this year"

    Come on, Totilo - is it completely beyond proper expectations for actual journalists to get this stuff right? I mean, I know there's a little bit of confusion given that the main game page only shows the XBox 360 logo and not the PC-DVD logo, but when the Ubisoft guy giving the live demo at Ubisoft's E3 press conference very clearly says "XBox 360 and PC" at the end (75:00 mark here, and then his buddy stars in a same-day walkthrough from the Ubisoft offices and says *the exact same thing*, well, that's where the news-consuming public is looking to you, the game journalist, presumably being paid for this kind of thing, to ferret out the truth among conflicting reports. It's not that hard to pause in your typing that line I quoted above and shoot a quick email to your contacts @ Ubi to confirm that these two Ubi guys (and the Community guy, UbiRazz, quoted here) know what they're talking about when they say, "XBox 360 AND PC."

    Maybe I'm making too big a deal of this, but it just seems like we PC-first gamers are being considered second-class citizens these days when mentions of the platform we're passionate about are completely missing from platform-"exclusivity"-wartime comments like this one.

  • A_White_Nite

    @Dead Giveaway:
    SC:CT had great online MP, but SC:PT was 10 times better. That game was so innovative for its time. Pandora Tomorrow also had better design for the levels and the gameplay was far more intense.

    I feel CT had some fairly cheap levels but in the overall perspective was a very solid game.

    Double Agent was solid but it seemed to of ventured too far away from the original fun factor of the MP in splinter cell games.

    All I want to see is big maps with no more than 6 playable characters (even with 6 in DA it got very laggy). I am VERY optimistic for this game!

  • hardcache

    @zgnoud: I've always prefered playing my SC on the Pc as well, but DA had some serious bugs in the PC version. I did buy DA later on super discount for the 360, and it was less buggy, but I didn't like the controls. However, with this new version having new controls and the ability to actually move quickly and efficiently I may just pick this up on 360. The previous games, trying to move quick was pretty much a death sentence.

    yeah i was a little worried it would be spammable, but having to earn each one through a melee kill (which can be rather difficult in this series) makes sense.

    Acornactivist

  • Acornactivist

    @BarbeQueQ: I think you have to take into account the story that is driving this game. In all previous SC games, Sam has been apart of a VERY organized, VERY professional branch of espionage. As such, the gameplay was appropriately methodical and precise (tho questionable in some cases). NOW, however, Sam's NOT working for Third Echelon, and hid daughter is dead. He's motivated by anger and revenge, and is no longer tied down by red tape. Because of where this story has gone, i'd be SURPRISED if the gameplay remained a slow paced as the previous ones. If you follow Sam's character development through the games, you can see how it's been slowly moving in this direction, really since chaos theory. I think its a smart and somewhat natural development for the story (i think he'll probably end up back in the organization), but for now, Ubi is matching the gameplay to the tone of where the storyline is. And i think it's going to be awesome.

    Ugh. I hope it's not all assassinations and killing to progress through the levels. I loved the challenge of trying to come as close as possible to ghosting a mission; if I wanted to leave a trail of bodies in my wake, there are lots of other games I can play for that.

    Everard

  • heretrix

    @fatheadwilson: I can't speak for the other fans but I really didn't like the controls and I thought the story was kinda dumb.

  • Hooded_Robin

    @BarbeQueQ:

    I think your first point is partly addressed in the game already. Reading Kotaku's preview it sounds like there will be many many context sensitive ways to deal a lot of damage to enemies being both graphic and painful.

    Point 2 is probably not going to be in the game because it's still a stealth game at heart (even if it doesn't place as large an emphasis on it as previous games did). The preview said that the player needed to be pretty accurate in taking down enemies or the consequences for failing to do it properly were pretty heavy. So it looks as though if you aren't fully prepared when the bullets start flying you won't last long, making stealth still an important part of the experience.

    Hooded_Robin

  • Chibirazi

    For some reason the whole targeted-assassination mechanic really reminds me of Tenchu 4 for some reason.
    If it is really like its here explained then it really takes away from the old core-gameplay.
    Having to sneak up at 1 target and take him out while his comrades were distracted always was what made splinter-cell for me.
    Well dunno we will see but as it stands now I dont like it.

  • saulpimpson

    @Thermatico: from what i saw they do fade out over time.

  • fatheadwilson

    @heretrix: Just curious why a lot of fans of SC think Double Agent was such a mess. I played DA, but I hadn't played any of the previous games. I didn't love DA, but I didn't think it was terrible. But that could be because I'd never played the earlier titles.

  • Adrian Jackson

    This was my fav. game(besides Alan Wake which looks badass) that I really wanted to see at E3 and shocked me with the On-Stage demo of it I left with what little brains Microsoft left me that day to have my mind fully blown.

  • T_Spoon_UK

    @BristolRuss: He went without them a few missions in DA... If i remember correctly. Could be wrong though.

    They cant do away with the NVG though, it's possibly the coolest icon in a game, imo.

  • Capp

    Also, I hope that players fully have the option to run stealth 100% if they choose. In the past games, I would do everything in my power to keep from being detected or seen at all. Several missions I was able to complete without any alerts or being seen.
    Yeah, at times I want to kick the door in and just mow everyone down with a big gun, but if I can get in a room, get what I need and get out without them knowing I was even there, then that is what I want to do. I like to see how much of a mission I can complete without having to kill/knockout anybody.
    That is one of the biggest things that drew me to the series.

  • Zhal

    "Hard work, rewarded."

    Yeah, targeting couple enemies and pressing Y is so hard. I hate where uBisoft is going with games.

  • T_Spoon_UK

    @Capp:

    Pretty much agree with everything you just said, especially about the Multiplayer.

    DA was better in the ways that it was more stylish, easier to control and the spies escape moves were pretty kick ass and it was considerably less glitchier than CT was.. But me and my friends always felt that it never had the right feel that CT did, which is why we always go back and play that instead of playing DA.

    Really hope that that it takes a step backwards, in a sense, to the Pandora Tommorow and Chaos Theory Multiplayer ways, but still keeps the style that DA had.

    Also, Co-Op Missions plzkkthxbai.

  • Gyaruson

    @Deenight:
    Ubisoft was the one to announce years ago that after Double Agent, all future Splinter Cells were Microsoft exclusive, so methinks that they would know best.

  • Capp

    Please have co-op missions. I hated, absolutely hated, that Double Agent had no co-op. Me and my friends played the co-op stages in SC:CT for countless hours, trying to perfect it, complete the missions without being detected, etc..

    I do agree that it doesn't have to be co-op in the story mode, but allow us to have a hand full of side missions that follow the same playing concept as the story, like in Chaos Theory.

    In double agent, it got really old doing nothing but hacking terminals. it was fun in the start, but got old fast.

    I also hope they bring back the good Versus too. In SC:CT, The mercs tried to kills the spies while they collected discs or other data, but the spies could at least fight back. You had proxy mines, flash bangs, etc.. to take out the spies. In the last one, the only thing you could do is hope you fall on one of them and knock them out for 2 seconds while you run away. If you were ever seen, you just hoped and prayed you remembered the layout of the stage while you are being shot at and having grenades lobbed at your head.

    In my opinion, Chaos Theory was the pinnacle of the series when it comes to multiplayer. I hope they bring that style of game play back in Conviction.

    I don't see why it wouldn't have MP.

    I always heard that SC:CT had great online MP but I never really played it. But I did love the online Co-op, and that's why i'm hoping it comes again on this release because it was absent from the last title.

    SC:DA, although it seems people didn't like it, I had a great time playing it with my friends. It can get very intense, something that doesn't happen much for me in other online games.

    For as long as this game has been known for, they better have a decent MP feature and a great Co-op option.

    I understand that the stealth genre is a niche genre and that stealth games don't sell as good as action games BUT there should be other ways of making stealth games more appealing to the crowd.

    I agree! Chaos Theory's split co-op was awesome and so was double agent's co-op challenges. I would appreciate it if both of those were in the game (I know its a lot to ask for).

    @BarbeQueQ:

    Well the positives and negatives of keeping old players while attracting new players needs to be weighed up. As a fan of the original I'm finding more and more that I want to be able to sit down, play a game for 20-30 minutes, have some fun action and then save and get on with the numerous other things I need to do.

    There seems to be this air from hardcore fans of anything that they just want to play/see more of the same and while this will work for a while (SC 1,2,3) if the product or experience doesn't change, new players won't come and old players will fall away apart from some dedicated few who always seem to throw a hissy fit like their owed something when the formula changes slightly.

    I'm not having a go at you in that last statement since your comment doesn't convey any of that elitist fanboy smell, it's just something I've observed in my 20 years of gaming (I'm 26 if that matters).

    The old SC seemed very cold, methodical and calculating. This new SC seems more like a Bourne/Mission Impossible movie which I think is what Ubi are going for. I'm really looking forward to playing it when it comes out.

    while i love the kind of stealth game that you are referring to, we are in the minority. if there's not enough action people simply will not play the game. i know too many people that found assassin's creed to be boring, and the original splinter cells to be too frustrating.

    @Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: In this day in age, if a company doesn't have some kind of hand in development (or hands full of money bags), then I remain skeptical and will assume that this title is "timed."
    Anyone know for sure?

    @HobbaHobba:

    Back in its old form they cited something about general purpose RAM or some such justification for choosing to make it exclusive to the 360. Then again, a lot of time has passed since then.

  • ieatchocolate

    @Vitalz: Just 360. Lucky buggers.

    @Deenight:

    Actual exclusive.

    Well, 360 and PC, I believe.

    Every trailer uses that damn Lacrimosa music, and it pisses me off, because that song is so badass, but now its getting stale because of the over use, just like the Requiem for a dream music

    @Sorwah: I guess that's why I want it to fade out over time. It just looked too much like the objectives were actually painted on the surface at the moment. I loved the part shown in the screen shot attached to the story, though. Very cool.

    @Deenight: Exclusive I think.

    This looks sick, seem like they took a page or two outta naughty dog's uncharted book

    @Thermatico: For me, it is a method to pull me in even further. The text and cinematics make me feel that this is what Sam is seeing. He has lost touch with the world in his anger to find his daughter's killers. The cinematics make me feel he is "remembering" who it is that the one interrogated is fessing up. The text is him adjusting his mission. It's surreal and I like it. It sort of takes me into the mind of someone who has lost his.

    Looks good from what I've seen but its still too action packed. In fact, this seems to have the most action in the series. That's really sad considering that SC was originally a stealth game.

    Props for 360 owners for getting exclusive for this.

    I bet this is a time-exclusive, though. I'd rather have this on PS3.

  • Vitalz

    If I am not mistaken, this is for PC and 360 only. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. (which I am sure you will :D)

  • Deenight

    so was it exclusive or time exclusive for the x360?

    Deenight

  • Thermatico

    While I think it's cool painting the mission objectives within the world like that, I hope they eventually make them fade over time. They pull me out of the world a little too much at the moment. Snap judgement purely from watching the E3 footage of course.

    @-Xehanort: Yeah, I didn't really mean in an intentional "Hey, he's leaving us out!" sense, just that PC has sort of become something of an afterthought, when consoles have captured so much of the mainstream attention that what's usually reported is just Wii-vs-360-vs-PS3 stuff ("Oooh, burn on PS3 owners, no Splinter Cell for them, 'cause it's exclusive to the 360, haha!"), with PC in a category of its own and forgotten about.

    @BarbeQueQ: Stephen said that he was playing the demo in God Mode, and if we assume the demo video they showed also had someone playing in God Mode, then I think it's safe to say that it's not going to be that "action-packed" when you play it yourself. What I mean is, if you went in guns blazing like the guy in the demo does most of the time, you'd probably die since you don't have infinite life. You'll have to be a little more stealthy and careful than he was, I think.

    I hope so, anyway, otherwise I'll just find all the windows in a room and keep jumping in and out of them until everyone is dead. :)

    im worried about multiplayer.

    I didnt like DA's multi, compared to the original xbox releases. Ubisoft shanghai made the multi bad-a and they kept it that way for the original xbox titles, but i think they thought they had to do something better and newer of the 360 release. dont fix it if it ain't brok, right pa?
