Things Unmentioned At The Nintendo Press Conference
These are the things we thought Nintendo would mention yesterday at their E3 2009 press conference, but didn’t:
Virtual Console For The DSi: We were almost positive that Nintendo would be expanding the DSi store with downloadable classics for the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance, but apparently Nintendo isn’t quite ready to plumb that particular revenue stream.
Games That Take Advantage Of The DSi’s Power: The Nintendo DSi is a bit more powerful than the Nintendo DS, but they’ve yet to present us with any DSi-specific cartridge-based titles that take full advantage of this.
Retro Studios: Nintendo’s main studio in the United States has made some superbly well-reviewed Metroid games and is polishing a compilation disc of all three that they made. So maybe it was time, we thought, for Nintendo to tell us at E3 2009 what Retro is doing next? No dice.
Shigeru Miyamoto: We know Shiggy was at the conference; why didn’t he show up for the press conference? Do we smell? Don’t answer that.
Kind Code: Can we talk about Nintendo’s new difficulty-shifting technology erroneously christened “Kind Code”? We can? We will! Oh wait, no we won’t.
New Zelda: We were hoping for a big announcement of a new Zelda game for the Nintendo Wii, but we’ll just have to settle for Miyamoto’s assurances for now.
Kid Icarus: Long-rumoured, desperately hoped for, and once again absent from any sort of announcement. Proof that a large group of people desperately wanting to believe in something doesn’t make it true. I don’t know how organized religion does it.
Pikmin 3: No new Pikmin? Miyamoto says he’s sorry.
Did Nintendo omit anything you were expecting?
WiiWare: Where, oh where, was the WiiWare? While Nintendo didn’t put a big emphasis on WiiWare at the conference, their official press release did list several games, many of which have been mentioned previously – Bit.Trip.Core, Swords and Soldiers, Cave Story – pretty exciting games that we suppose they just didn’t have time to show off.

"I've been a doctor! I've-a been a referee! You'll never see a plunger, in-a these HANDS!"
@MasterSauce: I had a good lol at the religious remark.
Really, it wasn't much of a jibe. It was more of a comparison when he words it "wanting to believe in something doesn't make it true".
SanaEquiesterer
@Crono51: It's possible. I played a bit of the Game Boy version and enjoyed it enough to get the NES one on the virtual console.
Then I kept dying...constantly.
There are a lot of older games I don't even bother trying due to difficulty and me being used to faster processing (and thus faster characters). I personally wanted a Kid Icarus sequel because of the potential the character has. Of course, I'm also the guy who says "make a 3D action adventure starring the Ice Climbers!"..
I think that Nintendo is playing it smart in that they aren't showing everything in their hand. But some games need to come out in certain time periods and they have had from what was the Zelda precedent of 2 years.
malmario
Other than what you mentioned and all of which I agree with, I would have loved some more Virtual Console love... starting with Earthbound (the excuses I've heard again putting it up are pathetic). Also F-Zero, Starfox, Star tropics (why not)... and Fatal Frame 4 you bastards!!!
AlucardsQuest
@Ueziel: When is the TGS
bakura
@lunarworks:
Actually it does, they were working on a new IP with flying characters but info on it had been quiet and rumor has it that game is now Kid Icarus and in production.
Its happened before with Star Fox and Rare, and more recently Castlevania Dark Shadow (or whatever its called)
SaanZ
I honestly don't know why ALL OF YOU are complaining about the things you were expecting Nintendo to announce! I mean seriously, you all sound like the games are NEVER gonna come out! THEY WILL EVENTUALLY! >=( You all should be happy, Nintendo did better than last year, and to me the new Mario games (especially SMG2) sound rather exciting. and all that fuss about no new Zelda games? COME ON! One Zelda game at a time! Spirit Tracks dosen't even have a release date yet! No Pikmin 3 announced? Hey, at least we know they're making it! No new Kid Icarus? Why do you all want that anyway? I mean the original game wasn't anything special at all and having Pit in Brawl was pretty much the only sign of a new game. Well the Ice Climbers came into Melee and you don't see them with any new games! seriously, people. All these comments are making you sound immature and impatient. Many games take time to be announced for release. And if you want REALLY great games from Nintendo, you're just gonna have to wait.it takes a long time for excellent games to come out, and Nintendo is really trying their best to please the fans, I know they are. But if there was something they didn't announce at E3, its not the end of the world. some of the games you're wishing for may NEVER come out. I'm sorry, but its the truth. what's great about waiting for the exact perfect game for you to release is that you know that the company can last forever until they finally think about it. So I beg of you everyone, CHILLAX!YOUR game is out there! They just didnt make it yet... T_T

WHAT ABOUT THE NEW KIRBY WII GAME!!! IT'S BEEN IN DEVELOPMENT SINCE THE NGC!! AAAAHHHHH!!! i need my kirby fix man
Angel Gonzalez
@firenze: I really don't see why poeple think it's so likely Kid Icarus is going to get revived. I really don't think Nintendo cares about it enough to bother. I would much rather see Star Fox or Kirby come back before Kid Icarus anyways.
Also, yeah, Retro Studios is probably working on a new IP. Also, IIRC, didn't they say they weren't necessarily only developing exclusively for Nintendo before?
@Billkwando bought his tickets for Hyde's US tour: We use to only get two Zeldas a gen. It's only relatively recently that it changed from that MO (earlier depending on how you classify the Oracles set). If it's ready by holidays '10, I don't see anything to be that concerned with. For the consoles that would be about par for the course.
houser
@Desmondia: I didnt mean i want a donkey kong fps... I hope that wasnt confusing
I don't know if anyone's with me, but I almost always hope for an announcement of a brand new Donkey Kong game, something like Other M that kind of goes back to it's roots while also being the fps it's been in recent times. I mean, Donkey Kong Country 1 - 3 are on my top 5 list of nintendo games, and i'm pretty sure they sold extremely well! Nintendo, New DKC please!
I was hoping Nintendo would announce a new Star Fox or some other franchise coming to Wii. I'm all for Nintendo's big 3 (Mario, Zelda, Metroid), but what about Kirby, F-Zero, or Star fox, or even Kid Icarus. I'm not really a fan of those series, but I like diversity and I'd be willing to give the new entries a shot.
Ryodestined
I was hoping that Nintendo would finally localize Mother 1 & 3. But that isn't going to happen, because no Soccer Mom, granny, or 5 year old wants them
@Merch Wnek: Fine, that's what I mean. They obviously hold off for more Japanese-oriented shows though.
@kidko: It was on G4 TV. Not sure if they reposted it somewhere on their website.
I thought the exact same thing as Samutz though. It does sound logical to put Retro on Kid Icarus if there's going to be a game in the franchise. Re-imagining an old Nintendo property that has a lot of fanboy nostalgia... Retro showed they're up to the task already.
firenze
@Ritz*: I have fond memories of playing Kid Icarus 2 for the Game Boy. I later played the NES version, and hated it.
Perhaps the people questioning KI's popularity only played the first, and never tried it on Game Boy?
Crono51
@MasterSauce: Hurts 'cause it might be true?
@Samutz: Can't find this interview... got a link?
@Sonira - I am old news.: No they've already shat all over Donkey Kong :(
lolgreg
@MasterSauce:
Someone sounds a little bitter over a joke. Do you want a hug?
@Zerorush:
I thought the 2D mario game with 4 player coop was pretty freakin' awesome.
@Agumen: yep, you guys seems to be inmune to blind fanboyism.
It happened also with strider ;) is not a bad thing to revive and update a potential game character, but I feel somewhat disturbed by the "this game was a classic; only we didn't know it untill now."
we should just stop complaining; is not the first time it will happen and surely won't be the last.
Hmm if they could get Legend of Zelda Four Swords as the first gamecube wii ware, that'd be amazing. Although I wouldn't see any point...
@Pete359: This. TP DID feel generic... especially for a zelda game... which sucked.
If only they put more effort into the story.. it had a good start and all, but by the end just tapered off into... well nothing really.
They need to polish the next one like crazy. Maybe get rid of the zelda 64 play style and come out with something new for the series.
THAT would be cool..
@trunkenmath: and I pray space marine link never ever happens...
Superlocke
@MasterSauce: To be fair, religion is much less of a big deal now than it was 100 years ago. I think I read somewhere that about 50% of Americans now identify themselves as... was it atheist or agnostic? And I think Europe is a lot more secular now than it was centuries ago too.
Personally, I think science and religion are like oil and water. Not that I'll convince anybody who disagrees, of course. Just my opinion.
Paviel
I did expect to see something about DSi virtual console, and at least a logo for Pikmin 3 and the new Zelda...just an official, brief mention that they are coming during the presser.
I didn't expect to see Kid Icarus....I have a feeling that's a myth.
jcb231
I suppose they didn't want to show off DSi-only games so as to not alienate Lite owners who don't want to upgrade just yet.
Kayube
@Samutz: Wouldn't be Zelda. That's Miyamoto's baby. Kid Icarus would fit their M.O., though.
But likely, it's some new IP, giving Retro a chance to do their own thing.
More Virtual Console Arcade games.
twinturbo2
@nworobes: You must be too young to remember. The people clamoring for a new Kid Icarus game are people like me, in their mid 30s. Back in the mid 80s, Kid Icarus, Metroid and Zelda were of equal popularity. Fanboys argued over which was better before any of them had a sequel. People who grew up gaming with several sequels on zelda and a definitive sequel on metroid never understood that at one point, all 3 were new franchises around the same time and kids were divided on which was best. The Kid Icarus fanboys (like me) are still hungry for that sequel. Still waiting. Don't get me wrong, I love the metroid and zelda series, but back in the day, it was die-hard kid icarus fan-love that drove me. It's an amazing game even today. I would love to revisit that world on a more advanced console, especially if it's as well done as the Metroid Prime re-imaginings.
@data_monkey: Glad your nom for "Quote of the Year" (so far) on a gaming site has absolutely nothing to do with gaming!
Super job!
watching G4 tv they talked with Reggie directly after the nintendo conference and asked him about Retro and why they were not doing the new Metroid. His responce was that they are VERY busy at the moment and that both them and Nintendo wanted to do something "new".
After 3 games in a series I would get pretty bored too.
grimdeath9740
"Proof that a large group of people desperately wanting to believe in something doesn't make it true. I don't know how organized religion does it."
Quote of the year so far! Well done Fahey.
data_monkey
@dafthero: Hey, you know, I was just thinking that. We need a Wii Star Fox.
Also: Donkey Kong game like Country or 64.
"Proof that a large group of people desperately wanting to believe in something doesn't make it true. I don't know how organized religion does it."
Right... because if you can just "not believe it" hard enough, you can make something untrue....
I've given every one of your religious jabs a pass, Mike, because I honestly couldn't care less what you believe, but I don't read Kotaku to catch up on Fahey's jaded and misinformed opinions on religion.
You missed the "Let's-poke-fun-of-Religion-to-be-edgy..." boat by a few years, and that's sad...
@MasterSauce: Fanboy!
(Sorry, this secular reader just couldn't resist.)
bassbeast
"Proof that a large group of people desperately wanting to believe in something doesn't make it true. I don't know how organized religion does it."
hey Fahey, why don't you stick to what you get paid to do, and stfu about what you don't....
Ak3k
Damn. I wanted the "Big N" to announce that they were going to give me a refund. I finally gave my Wii to my 5 year old twins because the games and graphics suck. Let me know when A) they announce an HD version of the Wii, and B) When they start releasing decent RPG games for the Wii.
Before anyone flames me, I DO have Zelda, and YES it is a great game, but the graphics suck, and it wasn't worth the price of the system for one good game.
Matthew Anderson
No Mother/Earthbound US announcement = fail
Kdawg
To me I felt that the Metroid game is a fresh take on the franchise. Same way it went from 2D to first person, this one will go from 1st person to third person and everything in between. Im excited, and the media briefing wasn't bad, Golden Sun made my day.
ThisCallingMist
I don't think Nintendo will roll out the Kind Code until it's complete and implemented within a title. They seem to lately prefer showing only those games that are complete or at least have a fair amount of gameplay footage available.
@nworobes: Totally agree with both of you here. Original game was a kinda crappy Metroid/Zelda 2 crossover. But I think that Pit was a character on the N Master cartoon and a lot of kids wanted a game with him in it, same as with Captain N. That might explain why all those little kids grew into loud fanboys.
@TheDJ17 hasn't bought a game in 6 months.: If you're going to make fun of something, I would suggest spelling it correctly.
@Phibius:
Not from Nintendo, that's for sure.
Rare owns the Conker license and Microsoft currently owns Rare.
@Frequen-Z: Lol, you sounded so life-like, as if you were next to me... Not saying you were, you know.. Lemme stop =/
ThisCallingMist
I remember listening to an IGN podcast about a year ago where Matt C was dropping some very unsubtle hints that Factor 5 were working on Kid Icarus.
I wonder if their demise has had pretty much killed this one? Consider that people in the know were also confused when it wasn't shown last year the no show this year can surely only mean it's not happening?
@Xaif: nope nintendo hosts there own nintendo conference during tgs they always have.
Merch Wnek
Oh typical Nintendo, wagging your genitals in everyone elses faces including your fans like we care. "Hey everyone! Casuals love us! Have some more! Oh, and here's a rehashed SMG for you hardcore scrubs."
God forbid they do an interesting title more than once every 6 years.
Jennacide
"I don't know how organized religion does it. "
Did you have to do that? You're really must enjoy stirring up trouble.
@Gloibin:
"God, there's no pleasing you people, is there?"
You hit it on the head there.
The comment sections here are now a fucking joke, full of fanboy 15YOs that have no perspective. These children think calling themselves "hardcore" validates them. They are wrong.
There is too much console cheerleading, and fanboyism has absolutely destroyed what was once a great place to read opinions of other gamers.
Honestly, all three companies had extremely strong presentations, all showcasing some stuff that is must-have.
Only a child doesn't understand that competition is good for the consumer. If Sony had not slipped and fell this gen, then things would likely be a lot more lackluster across the board, same as before Nintendo fell from grace in the 90's.
Qui-GonJim
@nworobes: sort of agreed, though rather than see it die off, I'd like to see it given a single cohesive story line. something along the lines of LotR in terms of depth.
Link is a true fantasy game. give it a true fantasy plot, I say!
@Zerorush: SOMETHING would've been nice. we got like 3 previews? I mean, at least they left out the corporate money talk but rather than replace it with anything of interest they just TALKED about the games they showed more rather than showing more games...
@DaftDethMonkey: They traditionally haven't, but have these past 2 years.
so...where's my next-gen Conker title?
@Frequen-Z: Aw, but I wanna hear the end of the joke!
@Odin: yeah, I don't want that at all.
salaminizer
@Frequen-Z: Oh, yeah, he IS a plumber. I wonder if I can get him to clear up the indian-food abortion that's currently clogging up my throne for a couple giant mushrooms and a gold star.
bonghammer
@dafthero: For everyone wanting a new starfox or a new Zelda there's two more who want a new IP. Either way, Nintendo were never going to please everyone at this year's E3. And they won't be pleasing people next year either, even if they do announce a new Zelda...
I'm STILL waiting for Jet Impulse, also known as "DS Air".
Omatic
Where... in the HELL... is my "Elite Beat Agents 2"?!?!?
As a DSiWare title or as retail disc that is DSi-exclusive or DSi-enhanced, EBA2 would be the perfect fit: new songs, new features, downloadable content, wi-fi multiplayer and leaderboards, etc. Heck, there was even a European listing for it last year...
[nintendo.joystiq.com]
I know the first one didn't sell a whole bunch right away, but sold pretty well for a niche title over time. Besides, that was less than five months after the Nintendo DS Lite launched (not so many DS owners back then).
The game's had almost 3 years to become a more well-known name. Besides, Ouendan 1 & 2 are two of the most imported Japanese DS titles ever.
So, c'mon, Nintendo... Please?
Pretty, pretty please with a cherry and an SD chip on top?
@Gloibin: "If you're not drinking the Kool-Aide, you're not a true fanboy!"
Fixed.
Kind of a low blow on religion there ehh? You cover video games on the internet, why don't you stick with that instead of making snide remarks about something you don't understand.
About Retro Studios:
In an interview with G4 yesterday right after the Nintendo conference, Reggie Fils-Aime told the G4 hosts that Retro is finally getting the chance to show that they can do more than just Metroid and is working on a new project that wasn't ready to be shown this year.
Perhaps they're taking on the next Zelda or Kid Icarus.
I honestly don't understand the whole whaaambulance parade around the next Zelda not being announced. Is everyone forgetting that we're getting Spirit Tracks? If you're dismissing that, then you're not a true Zelda fan. I think we'll be plenty busy with the TWO console Marios, Metroid M, and...God, there's no pleasing you people, is there?
@trunkenmath: It's on the Virtual Console! Or just make a concerted effort to hook up your N64 and actually play that cartridge you have. It was easily one of the best titles for the N64.
nworobes
@Ritz*: I have also been constantly questioning the demand for a Kid Icarus game for the past couple years. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me, but I feel pretty sure that no one wanted a Kid Icarus game at all until he was announced as a character in Brawl. At which point, idiot fanboys 'round the globe exclaimed:
"Kid Icarus!? That must be a beloved classic Nintendo franchise! [Note: It's not. It is a poor man's NES Metroid, which means especially little given how NES Metroid lacked a lot of the key feature that made Super Metroid amazing, or the features were present but executed poorly.] Now, to the forums! To demand a Wii Kid Icarus game, as if I've ever played any of the other games in the series, or know anything aside from "the games probably feature you as a badass angel!" [Note: The games do not feature you as a badass angel.]
I just do not understand this campaign for a Kid Icarus Wii. I don't think the gameplay from the previous entries is even worth salvaging. I guess if you're really jonesing for a game where you play as a badass angel handing out righteous judgment, they could just make that from scratch (hell, I'd play it), but I don't even see why you'd bother involving the Kid Icarus brand. It's not even named that well! Icarus wasn't an angel!
nworobes
@Ueziel: Nintendo dont do TGS.
DaftDethMonkey
@nworobes: Ironically Majora's Mask is the only one I never played. Bought it at a kmart clearance ages ago and never even opened it. Back home it is probably still collecting dust next to the piles of games I never had the chance to play.
trunkenmath
@trunkenmath: That's why Majora's Mask was so great! OK, it still had the bow and mount part, but I really loved that for once they bothered to actually come up with a new mythology and not just rehash the same "save princess, get back Triforce from Ganon" storyline. My interest in the Zelda series would be declining far less rapidly if they did that more often.
I guess honourable mention goes to all the handheld Zeldas, which I'm pretty sure all have their mythologies, though the only one I've played myself is Link's Awakening (which was awesome).
nworobes
@willparry79: I bought my wii two years ago, and still cant justify buying it :P
I'm pretty sure the DSi's extra power is simply so it can run the browser out of the box. I seriously hope they wouldn't be so stupid as to split the market any more with the damned thing. I could accept buying a new and exciting handheld to play games that my current handheld can't. Rebuying my current handheld with a couple of crappy cameras tacked on to play some tacky downloadables? No thanks.
Just as long as the games I actually care about continue to be compatible with my good old DS Lite I can contain the annoyance.
Odin
@KillerCRS: Samus' boobs just got 2 sizes bigger and a hell of a lot more bouncy. Assuming that you're 99 of course.
I am holding back from buying a DSi until Nintendo announce a Virtual Console for it, that's the only deal breaker for me.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it's gonna be around a year after the DSi's North American launch before we get any decent DSi enhanced or exclusive software, whether it be via Digital Download or no. I remember I got the DS the day it came out, and wasn't able to really justify my purchase for like a year. I guess it kindof makes sense though; there's really no reason to develop for a new system (DSi) if most of the handheld playerbase still has a DS lite, and the DSi will play standard DS games. And I know something like it is already out for the wii, but as for DSiware, I'd love to see some kind of My Pokemon Ranch or Pokemon Box adaptation for the DSi. Not really much of a game, but a practical use for the DSi's storage capability.
Oh, and as for Zelda? Yeah, they better go ahead and announce the next major installment soon; cause we all know it's gonna be pushed back like 2 years past whatever release date they announce for it.
Do people really want a new Kid Icarus? Why?
Pit isn't that great of a character and the old game wasn't anything special.
I was hoping for an announcement related to a new F-Zero, I miss that series D:
iizcallum
I was pleasantly surprised to see a new Metroid game, and especially one made by Team Ninja. Wasn't expecting that.
KillerCRS
Virtual Console for the DSi Will be announces around the TGS
@dmfamzo: Same... I only watched the last 30 minutes and it was lame.
MDX
Two years in a row I didn't felt the need to watch their press conference..
no regrets @ all
@Pete359: Actually...Space Marine Link could be cool. But 40k style, not generic tough guy in space style. Link as an overzealous religious warrior would be neat.
In general I sort of wish Zelda would just end. The games are fun but I just need more these days than finding the bow, getting my mount, getting the same triforce, to rescue the same damsel in distress.
trunkenmath
I was bumming hard, I really thought the next true sequel to Star Fox 64 was in the horizon, with the motion plus and whatnot. No adventuring, no silly melee combats, just pure air to air action with slippy.
PsycheE
Disappointed with Nintendo. But on the other hand maybe a small taste of being third place again will get their asses into gear, we'll see at TGS.
I've always been a Nintendo fan but seriously, what they're doing is beyond me. It's been two years since Phantom Hourglass was released and they're only now finishing up Spirit Tracks? Nothing's changed, same controls, same basic plot, same graphics. What's two years?
As for a new Zelda for Wii game I'm sorta glad it's not coming out this year. Twilight Princess was a great game but it felt generic. It didn't really add anything to the franchise. I'm not saying they need to introduce Space Marine Link but how about quality voice acting and a compelling story with twists and turns for a start?
@Ueziel:
I'm expecting a lot of DSi related announcements at TGS, and if they throw in Kid Icarus there too, well that's just dandy.
TrjnRabbit
I had mixed feelings about the Big N's conference. I feel like I should be grateful that core gamers are getting tossed a few bones with SMG 2 and that awesome looking Metroid title, but it all felt so...expected.
Granted a new Zelda or Kid Icarus title wouldn't have been a major surprise either I suppose.
The only thing that I'm surprised didn't happen was Wii Music 2: Embaress Harder.
i wouldn't mind a REAL Star Fox game, but that doesn't seem like it's happening.
I can't wait for Cave Story. Its odd how my gaming library is becoming filled with more budget than retailed games as of late (and this is across all platforms).
I would assume they'd save even more for TGS honestly. With it being as huge for Japanese developers as it is, I can see some withholding.
"but apparently Nintendo isn't quite ready to plumb that particular revenue stream."
Hahah, plumb, get it?! Nintendo- plumbing- their flagship character is a pl-
Nevermind.
Keep the religious bigotry to yourselves Kotaku.
OingusBoingus
@MasterSauce: It was a funny line. If you're religious, then just imagine all the other thousands of relgions but your own, and laugh at them.
No North American release of Muscle Koushinkyoku = Epic Fail
"Kid Icarus: Long-rumored, desperately hoped for, and once again absent from any sort of announcement. Proof that a large group of people desperately wanting to believe in something doesn't make it true. I don't know how organized religion does it."
Better Graphics and a hard drive.

Wow, random stab at the religious. Uncool.
But otherwise, really was hoping to hear something about a new Kid Icarus. Nintendo's gotta do something with that great new design from brawl.

@lolgreg:
Donkey Kong is the Sonic of Nintendo.
@Kdawg: Yes-they announced two new Mario games, and a new Zelda-but if they had made a big deal out of this announcement I seriously think they could have taken the show. There is nothing more screaming of "appealing to the core" than an Earthbound anthology.
@GohanGVO: I meant play those DS-created games on the Wii.
The irony about WiiWare is that this year's lineup is stronger than ever yet it received no attention at all. There was not even a mention of the WarioWare DIY Channel that allows you to play DS-created WarioWare DIY microgames!
Kirby Wii was missing. It was originally annoounced for the GC at E3 2005, but we haven't heard anything since other than that it's moving to the Wii.
This game was supposed to use the Super Smash Bros. Melee engine.
@Ritz*: A game where you fly around as an angel shooting stuff with a bow would be awesome. If you could turn the bow into dual swords, it would be extra awesome. If Nintendo made such a game, one can imagine that it would be particularly awesome, and also it would be called Kid Icarus.
Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc
@lolgreg: No they've already shat all over Donkey Kong :( "

What about Heartgold/Soulsilver? Did they leave it unmentioned because it's already been revealed?

@MasterSauce: Looks like I may be the only other one here that does so, but I agree with you. Silly and unnecesary remark. Fahey is one of my favorite writers here at this site, but that one reeked of Owen Good...

@Frequen-Z: Well that one went down the tube.
