A Look At Wet’s High-Concept Rage Mode
When I saw WET earlier this year, one of the things I really liked about the action title was its artistic rage mode. But it’s kind of hard to explain the fast-paced, over-the-top mode. Fortunately, GameTrailers has our back.

@Atheist Jew: Looks like a fun version (gameplay wise) of No more Heroes
cokpendejo
@Yossarian: You make many valid points Yo, in fact i could say that i agree with most. This demo is a let down in so many ways. I would have preferred more polish and perhaps a better person demo-ing it
But I will say this, as I said in my post, that i have been following this game since its announcement, its potential dropping from the blizzard/activision/vivendi merger, and its rebirth if you will, I would consider myself slightly more knowledge-able than Fad, who basically said "what no combos = instant fail".
My "knowledge" may not mean much, and you and I could disagree on a lot of things, but since I consider myself an open-minded gamer, eager to experience "new" or "fresh" concepts, it bothers me when people make "seemingly" uninformed assumptions. (not the quotes are just me being subjective)
you may not like the approach, a dev takes, or you may love "more of the same", either way you shouldnt slam the creative vision of another simply because it doesnt "agree" with your comfort zone. thats all i am saying. the gameplay mechanics is not what is going to kill this game, what is is whether or not the developers can accurately convey what they set out to do.
NG2 had horrible camara angles but people expected that, and were able to take that out of the "is this a good game" equation. Too Human was "over-hyped" and it showed. This game has potential is all i am saying, and i will still pick it up.
nateous
looks awesome!! and the whole "how do you want it motherfucker" and "you just fucked up" really add to it imo. >.>
There is so much they could have done with this but the combat just looks sloppy. Max Payne did bullet time better and that was almost 10 years ago. If they wanted to really exploited rage mode they should have slowed the game play down more and did sudden speed ups at the moment of blade contact for a kill and random bullet cams for kill shots. This would have increased the gun fu they were shooting for. Really just sloppy workmanship.

@Dread1021: yeah it was pretty jerky i thought, missing a somewhat acrobatic and smooth flow I thought.
Ooooo, red on black on white.
Yeah, the gameplay looks terrible. I'm quite certain it will get mediocre or low scores.
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ:
Not every game is trying to be as outlandishly combo-tastic as DMC.
In fact, while I enjoy Onimusha and God of War, I just can't get into the over-the-top nature of the DMC games.

@Curse_Lily:
I'm having seeeeeeizures!
Squirrelbot3000
@videorecipes: Yep, I thought the same. Replace the rage mode with the slow motion. It also got the sliding feature and shooting at guys behind ya. However, I like the grind house feeling of the trailer and that you can wield the katana.
When I see the word "Rage" nowadays, I get my hopes up. Needless to say, this isn't quite the Rage I'm looking for.
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: Based on what I have just seen, I agree. This looks terrible. I don't like to slate games before they are anywhere near the final stages of dev, but this really does look shit.
furiku
@nateous: How is defending a game that hasn't been released any different from bashing it? You know just as little, and so it's not like either of you can make a truly absolutely informed comment.
That being said, I have to agree with Fadecy, this looks like total crap. If it isn't done, then they should not have been showing off these gameplay clips yet, because what they are showing is no good (IMO).
Besides the stylized art, which is nice I guess, there is just no substance behind this rage mode. She can't track a target, she's running into walls, and the camera swung around so much it made me dizzy. Whoever was playing also couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with either guns or swords.
If I'm putting a demo clip out there I'd damn well retake that footage over and over until I had the best representation of the gameplay that I could get. If this is the best they could get, then they are in trouble.
@Rod_Z: I never read the spirit, but from what I gather of the horrible mess the movie was, the spirit is more of a story that only translates well as a comic. Even some of the "humour" in it fell flat, because it was a movie adaptation where conversation isn't broken up into panels.
I do know that the spirit is one of Frank Miller's big influences, and I guess he needed/wanted to pay homage to it. You can see the inspiration of Sin City when watching the spirit.
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: I for one personally love berating games before they've been released. especially since I know so much about risk-taking endeavors...i still believe DICE fell FLAT on their arse for Mirrors Edge.... end sarcasm.
In all honesty, I have been looking out for this game, since its teaser nearly 1+ years ago. It may not be on par with DMC, but i am sure neither is Bayonetta (which i am sure you'll call Fake too)
Maybe, just maybe the game isnt for you. maybe its made to be as accessible to non-gamers with subtle nuances to the more hardcore. one of those "easy to pick-up, hard to master" types. As far as development goes, see my comment above, they could have just shipped this over a year ago and it WOULD have been crap.
The devs always imagined this as being "if quentin tarintino" made a game, and personally i am excited for it. Sure you may think the gameplay looks bad now (having so much exposure to it :/ ). but a decent game needs more than that, your opinion that is. the art style, score, and overall feel of this game IMO has hit the nail on the head for what the devs are trying to achieve. ---- so there----- lol (end rant)
nateous
Wow, it looks like this game is going to be mediocre! Though I hope I'm wrong; I'd hate to see Eliza Dushku's career take another hit.
RedLupo
they coulda made rage mode so much better. increase the speed of her attacks by a great deal for example to the point that u can kill a room of 10 guys in 5 seconds if u have teh skills!? of course, the game is made with casual intentions in mind, liek anyone who watched the developer interviews knows. oh well, stilll looks worth a try with my eyes closed, and i don't mean bad towards the graphics, even though they don't look like too much more then bloodrayne considering the time we're in today, just saying that it shouldn't be harder then 'easy' with my eyes open.
asdf4321
That camera looks terrible. Probably shouldn't have given us gameplay in a small, cramped hallway where we can see how awkward it can actually be. Sliding along the ground into a wall isn't exactly thrilling stuff.
PwnofProphecy
I can already tell. This is gonna be a cult hit for being relatively unique and artistic, but it will get generally awful reviews because of its terrible camera. Of course, I know nothing about the game. Just my guess.
@Yossarian: On an even more random side-note, I have to say that he's great, as long as he isn't directing. I mean, even Samuel Jackson, Scarlett Johansson and Eva Mendes together couldn't save "The Spirit".
Rod_Z
Seems Prince of Persia and Max Payne had sex.
Richard Pires
@Rod_Z: Random side-note, but I love how Frank Miller's work is now just referenced as "a novel".
Technically it is a comic book, but I guess his fans want to sound cooler than that, so then it was "graphic novel" in order to legitimize it when a 30 year old is caught reading it.
Now that 300 and Sin City are hits I guess he's cool enough that even the "graphic" part gets dropped.
Hearing Eliza Dushku, my love of loves, cursing like a sailor while slicing and shooting people in bullet time... It makes my day.
I get this feeling that if this released as is, the designers are going to look back at it with some huge regrets about things they obviously missed or didn't realize they needed until too late and couldn't jam in.
This style of combat just screams for a gameplay and animation system that strings all of these attacks into combos. I watched this trailer, and their other basketball court clip, and I saw this in neither of them.
If you are going for this slow-mo ballet of gunplay then you should really go to great lengths to make sure the ballet doesn't stop. You shouldn't be running into walls, or stopping and having to pan around to find the next enemy. The character should be making smart moves for you and going straight to the next wall walk that get you to the next baddy to maim.
As much as people hated Too Human, it did get this part done right. You sit there and flick your controls around and the character would chain attacks between baddies, letting you build up these nice big combos that really felt fluid.
This, though? Not so much.
That video actually made me less interested. For a game called 'Wet,' it doesn't look very fluid.
Aside from the admittedly crappy camera, this game looks like fun!
njd09
@Schmatz: Or the game is so bad that even their best players can't seem to chain together combo or any sort of flow to save their lives.
That just looked like it was painful to control.
Seems like something from a Frank Miller novel.
Rod_Z
Companies should learn to pick people who are good at their game to demo it for these videos. The person playing this one saw more walls and corners and whiffs than needed in something that should sell your game.
Schmatz
Like I said before, it all just looks just extremely out of control, awkardly, and unwieldy.
Compared to how combat looks in Batman: Arkham Asylum, WET's combat system doesn't look very smooth at all.
DRaGZ
Too over stylised for me, it felt like my eyes were being stolen by a scene hipster kid while someone played god awful music into my ears.
Blore07
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: I'm with you on this game being terrible, but Devil May Cry 1 and 4 (the only two i've played) were absolutely terrible.
The level of ease playing Devil May Cry makes it impossible to call somthing else, a fisher price version.
Blore07
@arkdragon: I believe in an interview with one of the developers, he said that the player gets free reign to use whichever weapons s/he wishes to use whenever. I believe it was this video:
http://ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/957974/wet/videos/wet_inv_050509.html
Looks like it'd be very fun as a rental.
(Yeah, I still drool over bullet-time systems. I played the vast majority of both Bloodrayne and Max Payne games with the unlimited slow-mo cheats. I need professional help.)
artistic rage mode
AHA! And everyone doubted(hated)the artistic view of the virtual boy back in 1995.
All hail Gunpei Yokoi the extraordinaire!
what a vulgar little minx
mutedia
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: I don't think the game looks that bad. It doesn't have a release date, so it's worth waiting it out and seeing what else will be done with the game.
The camera looks horrible. I hope they fix this.
@Sinyes: also madworld, i will say meh, to this game. this is hardly something new, also i read somewhere that this is related to some especific parts in the game, so u cant trigger it at will. correct my if im wrong, anyone
arkdragon
This is just like my real-life rage mode that kicks in whenever I start losing at a game nonstop.
kobeashi
This reminds me of kill bill, looks sweet!
ooh look at the pretty art style ooh....oh wait, look! can you see that terrible gameplay. meh
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: I agreed this does not look interesting at all especially the slow mode but i'll wait before i make any decision on it.
@Handsome Al:
Oh shit, wow. That was really clever. Give this man a Gold star and a pat on the head because learning to type with a keyboard is a momentous achievement!
OmnomnomPancake against a Star priorety.
kinda reminds me of...stranglehold! camera needs some work.
videorecipes
Oh wow that was bloody. But chopping people out and coloring the place white with human fluids sounds dirty. And wet. Oh snap!
mitch_93
Artistically interesting but numerous previews on the combat have me remaining skeptical.
Damn, sliding down the stairs in your knees has got to hurt. Who wants to try it?
This game just looks terrible... a game based on sword fighting and gunplay with no combos? I'm sorry, but I seriously see this as a fisher price Devil May Cry.
For this game I bet they had a really shitty game in development, and they thought "OMG I NOE! LET'S LUMP A BUNCH OF SLO MO IN THERE, THAT'LL MAKE IT A BIT LESS RAP" I'm always a fan of games with female protagonists (bar Lara Croft) but I really do not like the look of this game, not matter how awesome the main character's design is.
@Handsome Al: Looking at Eliza Dushku in that GTTV Wet segment got me wet.
@Sinyes: I was thinking the exact same thing!
Andrew Freedman
Is this something you engage after building a bar? Or is it automatic sections of the mission?
[ZTF]NSF Operative
Looking at Wet, got me wet.
reminds me of Killer 7/Suda style art direction.
@cokpendejo:
Not with that atrocious camera and what looks to be imprecise standard hack and slash gameplay, it doesn't. Not to me anyway...
Blah8
@Atheist Jew: It will probably be a lot like Samurai Western by Atlus for the PS2. Rather fun game play, though very, very repetitive and also a cliched story.
But still, it has it's moments and can be quite fun in its mindlessness.
@Sinyes: same here!
