Capcom Still Teasing Mega Man 9’s “Final Secret”
At Evo 2009, Capcom community-mans Seth Killian gets cornered about the final undiscovered secret in Mega Man 9 but vows it does indeed exist, and that it is still out there.
“People have found a ton of amazing stuff in the game that I didn’t think would have been dug up for a long time,” Killian says. But the “final secret” isn’t among that. His questioners try to coax more details out of him, but Seth doesn’t budge.
Last October, someone on the Capcom-Unity boards speculated that the last secret was a weapon, specifically a throwing weapon. S-Kill put the splat on that.
What the hell could it be? After nearly a year, we probably stand a better chance of, collectively, blindly guessing what it is rather than actually finding it. I say it’s a Ghosts N Goblins Easter egg.

@HalcyonX12: People actually thought the game was that hard? It was difficult at first but pretty soon I was running through it.
@Scazza: Megaman also had tiny tiny improvements (sliding, charge shot, Rush, etc.).
And yes, it has been a series that has lived on treading on old grounds, but as a mascot for a company that basically lives off rehashing, I think it's very representative. And what more do you need for the mascot series of a game company?
Besides, Im fine with it as long as it is fun. And Megaman 9, with its decidedly retro design (not just in art, also in game design) somehow did struck a nerve. A good one.
@Scazza: I complain because it's a completely broken system, and this is a choice example of it. Completely worthless post, but it gets pushed because someone with a star wrote it. I didn't give a damn about stars when they were ill-considered "rewards" (How ill-considered is clearly evidenced by the quality of people that have them), but now that they actually grant you the privilege of having your post be seen, it's a completely broken and stupid system.
It better be Bass. If they modeled an 8-bit sprite just to be a monitor cameo, it will break my heart.
Raging Demon would be great.
@PriceIsWrong: or use the rush coil EXTREMELY QUICKLY.
Superlocke
@Scazza: There are plenty of series that are remarkably similar game in game out though. Mega Man/Castlevania/Pokemon to name a few. I have to admit I'm biased against this argument, because I could play Castlevania and Pokemon from now until death and not get bored, but I really don't see the harm in it. Just like I don't see the harm in sports titles existing year after year. If it's a game I don't care for, I ignore it. If someone else enjoys a game I don't, more power to them. I've hated on some pretty well loved titles, and loved some hated games. I don't want the games I hate to not exist, I just don't wish to play them.
Probably unlocks 'absurd mode' where you start the game in total darkness, equipped only with a toothless rake and your legendary cyborg wit to carry you through 255 levels of unending, sadistic capcom terror. Either that or different pants.
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku:
You have to use the concrete gun and freeze the lava jets. It's a royal pain, but doable.
PriceIsWrong
@Intellectualdiot: Could be read as 'skill' rather than S-Kill ::shrugs::
@dowingba:
Oh no, everyone seems to think I'm saying 9 will bridge the gap. I dont think it will.
I'm just saying, that they've already left hints of what happened in the X series... whats to stop them from leaving hints in the MM series?
@Scazza: Oh...Though I know you said you were mostly talking about the multitude of DS games and such, I think that MM9 is rightfully labeled as a sequel. Its a familiar style of gameplay with more bosses, levels, and weapons. Also, its at a fair price for those who like 2d sidescrollers (and of course, the Megaman series).

Finding out the secret of Mega Man 9?
Uh... a hidden ending where he dies?
you know after a Certain (DK) easter egg recently, i've stopped looking for this one,
Heartless141
@cyberrat101: Its true... Why the hell couldnt they just tell me already! I bet the secret is there is no secret! DAMN YOU CAPCOM!
in all seriousness, I really would like to know what this secret really could be, I didn't even know the series was known for its hidden stuff.
@Scazza: In order for Mega Man 9 to be a cash-in, it would have had to have been easy to make. Not only was MM9 not easy to make (it took more development time and money than Bionic Commando: Rearmed), but it had so much attention to detail that it's ridiculous. Get a different name for MM9 because cash-in it is not.
@Scazza: the secret is how... Nevermind, you compared Mega Man to Madden, and you made an invalid point because Mega Man was good enough to only need tiny improvements... The only logical explanation I have is that you're just mad at Capcom because you DON'T KNOW THEIR SECRET. It's sad what Mega Man 9 has turned people into...
@octalass: You know. I used to think just like you...but then I got a star! BAM! Suck on that douchebag!
(Sorry, trying to be as much of a condescending asshole as possible.)
But in all seriousness, I don't really like the new system. I wish they'd go back to the commenting system they had before. To me, it was perfect.
So, all I can say is keep posting and maybe you'll become an asshole like me. ;D
Starshock
@Scazza: Aaaah, I see. Then I guess I agree with you even more. And I certainly do not condone the business practices of the industry. I hate it. But thats the way it is, and the only thing I can do is not buy the shoddy products (though 10 more people will fill my void haha).
I can see your point with the MM releases. While I was looking at the MM DS games earlier, I noticed one that had TWO sequels in the same year. Its crazy stuff. And if you're talking about "hardcore" gamers (ie. the self-proclaimed ones) then a bit of fanboyism is most likely involved with them. It's BLASPHEMY to criticize our Blue Savior!!
And as for the "idiot" comment, thats probably why you're getting people who don't see the line you're drawing or the idea that you're trying to get across. Once they see that someone is calling them an idiot, a flag goes up and they charge up their arm cannons. And once the're in "killing mode," all they'll see is red.
Pssssst. (Don't tell anyone...but most people on the internet ARE idiots.) :D
Starshock
@Superlocke: I will give you that the MM games do tend to be better made then most cash-ins, and I also accept that they make them to cater for the fans of the series.
@Erwin:
Of course, if you want to save Annie!
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku: They're lying too. It's a conspiracy.
@Scazza: I'm gonna say it's probably because Megaman is still more well-crafted than roughly 75% of the shit that gets put out there, so it generally doesn't HAVE to change.
And don't apologize, you made some good points! If people wanna whine, let them whine. It's why non-starred comments don't get thrown up on the front page now.
Just cuz some people don't find your comments interesting or agreeing with their own opinions doesn't mean you shouldn't tailor it to them.
Superlocke
@Scazza: The truth is , no matter which Mega Man it is , there really is no other way to do Mega Man except in its current form. Play Level , kill enemys , fight boss. Mega Man is a classic and always will be if they changed the way it is , I simply wouldn't buy it.
Better yet , think of some other 8 bit nes titles from back in the day that are pretty much the same thing over an over but still considered classic... Ghost&Goblins and its predecessor.. How about Contra on the nes? Madden is only that bad because there isn't any competition to go around it EA ruined that.. so Madden needs to be taken out the equasion all together. If they ever plan a Mega Man 10 in 8 bit style count me in .. its the game that keeps on giving.
Ron J Silvey
@Starshock: I know I jumped pretty quick and came off as hating on all MM games. I actually thought 9 was a good title. why? It was clear to be a game made to resemble the old ones and they didn't hide it as a new awesome super version. They where upfront and pretty much said it was a classic remake-like game. i dont hate on MM9 in all honesty. I also dont hate on the original few games of the series. At the time, they where VERY solid (and hard) platformers.
I also agree and understand its a business, and i understand that as a business standpoint its in their best interest to do whatever they can to make money. Its funny, I normally am the one who pulls the "its a business" point. However, the cashing in routine dosn't make it right. I guess my whole point boils down to the fact that I hate it when the "hardcore" gamers hate on games like madden and other series because of their yearly releases, and then turn a blind eye to what capcom does with the megaman series, which releases more then 1 megaman game a year. I don't understand how people don't see the line im drawing between the two.
Also sorry to call people idiots. I admit again, that the first post on here was a bit loud and not very well laid out (lol).
@Scazza:
For some reason I see all stared commenters as condescending assholes.
Thanks for dividing the community Gawker!. Take your stars and shove it up your collective networked ass!
"S Kill" as a nickname? No thanks.
As for my guess? It's a jetpack.

@Scazza: Holy crap you are so rude for not wanting friends that makes me want to be your friend.
A yeah and its call fond memories.
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku: I seem to remember hearing that Mega Man 9 was specifically not going to bridge the gap between MM8 and MMX, before the game was even released.
@EvilBadman: Look on the bright side, my bitching and trolling has given you something to whine about on this fine sunday evening!
@Chinpokomon: Well played.
EvilBadman
@Scazza: I am not envious of your little star, nor do I care about how long ago you started commenting Kotaku. I am miffed that because of the new system, your ridiculous trolling was top posted with no other merit.
If you're that upset with the terrible commenting section, you should probably try to stop infesting it with so much garbage (i.e. A uncalled for blanket attack on people who purchased the game, insinuating them to be sheep-minded idiots).
EvilBadman
@dowingba: We hate all the same things! Do me!
Had to, sorry. ;)
bialia
@Scazza: I want to have your babies.
@Scazza: I agree with you and yet I don't. I mean, come on. The video game industry is a business and if anyone thinks that the companies actually care about you, me, or anybody else, then they should get a wake up call. They are a business and the point is to make money. And if making money means "cashing in" on established franchises with a fanbase, then thats what they're going to do. That is the bottom line. And yeah, sometimes (actually...a lot of the time) they give you the low blow and make trashy sequels to games just to take your money.
Now, I don't own a DS and don't really follow their games, but I just looked up their Megaman games and...holy shit, thats a lot. I can see your point. But I don't think Megaman 9 fits in with that category. To me, it felt like a true sequel and not just a gimmick.
However, I don't think people who bought Megaman 9 are idiots. They just like old school sidescrollers with the loveable blue-guy. Though, I'm a little biased, since my first game on the SNES was Megaman X and I was one of those "idiots" who bought Megaman 9. (thoroughly enjoying it too. :P)
Starshock
@Witzbold: Read up, I don't like maddens cash in tactics either. Why would i talk about not liking madden in a topic about MM? My point is that all series that do what Capcom does with MM, they remake, rerelease and slap MM label on everything to get people to buy it, and it sells so well bugs the shit out of me and is contributing to the glut this industry experiences with the same shit over and over. Its the same tactic they do to get casual people to buy Wii crap, which the hardcore people love to make fun of, but as soon as you call out Megaman, you get hell brought down on you.
Also like i said in another post, sorry that I didn't go about it all nice and try to portray my opinion in a way that wouldn't upset anyone.
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku: if you still need the help you jump to the left on top of the first lava beam shooter, face right and deploy Rush that you can ride, and head northwest to the ladder, as fast as possible of course
@Scazza: Hows about its the same reason why you bag on MM but not Madden?
That might work.
You see the real problem is not the whole subject, but how you went about presenting it.
Try reflecting on that first before you tell others to reflect upon themselves.
@Scazza: People do like Madden, etc, and people do like Mega Man. It's just that you don't like it.
"Seriously, I would love to know why MM is fine, but games like Madden etc get flamed"
That's your great argument? "Well, since people flame Madden, it's cool if I flame Mega Man, right?" That's certainly rational. (Yes, that was sarcasm)
Moreover, you're basically saying that everyone who doesn't share your opinion is an idiot. Wonderful.
And, people are complaining about the star because people who do have stars usually have their posts highlighted. Part of the new commenting system. This was put in place to weed out fanboys, flamers, and idiots, but it doesn't seem to be working too well in this situation.
Yes, my comment is very random. But I really don't feel like fleshing it out more. Take it as you will.
@Erwin: A crummy commercial?!
bialia
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku: Its obviously a ridiculous ploy.
AznSlackerType~Is AbsurdlyNarcissistic
@evilweevle: I really dont care about the flaming, I don't go online to make friends. Im talking about the random people whos only contribute to the conversation is "retarded statems like yours deserve all the shit they get" and "Whaa, why do you have a star and I don't".
So far, apart from a few people, all the people who have replied to me have done nothing but flame me with no actual substance to their side of the argument. Seriously, I would love to know why MM is fine, but games like Madden etc get flamed. So far I have heard nothing...
@Scazza:
what? were u hoping that kotaku introduced a new system where people who make completely fucking retarded comments dont get the shit flamed out of them?
retarded statements like yours deserve all the shit they get so quit talking like your above all the shit talk and fuck off already.

@Erwin: Ovaltine? Son of a bitch...
Mega Man 9 became my second favorite game of 2008. So much so that I bought it three times to show my support. I can now get my Blue Bomber fix on any current gen console I happen to be on.
The 8bit graphical downgrade is only part of it. The decision to 'dumb' it down back to its roots, back to when it first made its splash in the gaming world, was an inspired one. In this age of always changing for the sake of change to draw in the next bullet point target demographic, it was refreshing to see Capcom realize what made Mega Man such a AAA franchise back in the day and go back to it.
Unforgiving difficulty, trial and error memorization of enemy placements and patterns, rock paper scissors boss battles, phenomenally catchy music, a plot that didn't even pretend to be in depth, and sheer overall fun. Thats what drew me to Mega Man 1 back when I was six. And its what brought me to Mega Man 9 when I was 24. I love how they've even added touches of current technology to it. The physics based swinging platforms, the advent of DLC (long live Proto Man mode and the Survival-esque mode), and trophies/achievements all make it one of the best PSN/WiiWare/XBLA games to come out, well, ever.
Now if only Capcom would give us Powered Up 2 and Maverick Hunter 2.
@Scazza: Funny how you think the Final Fantasy games are true sequels, yet you bash on Mega Man.
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku:
Are you serious? You know you can hit them with concrete right? That much is obvious I hope... there must be some little trick you're missing. Let me play that level and I'll get back to you in a minute. Seriously.
*Update- I keep dying before I get anywhere close. LOL. Didn't take long to get out of practice

@Illusion: @Ace11: Is this all kotaku commenting has become, a bunch if whiners without stars, complaining about people who have stars, seriously you people needs to get OVER yourselves. Its a bloody comment section on a web blog, if the best you can do is whine that you dont have a star beside your name, you need to really take a good look at your outlook on life.
And FYI, ive been on kotaku since there was no comment system and it was just Crecente and his predecessor. I stopped commenting when they let anyone comment. I decided to come back after the new comment system last week. Too bad it just seems to have become worse.
@Chinpokomon: It's dangerous to go alone! Take this.
MechaTama31
@dry-roasted-peanuts: Theres a difference between a sequel (see Half Life series or Final Fantasy) and a quick cash in (see Megaman, Madden or any non-first party Wii series).
@[ZTF]NSF Operative: "Be sure to drink your Ovaltine."
@Scazza: Dude,what people did you bribbed to get that star?
@Scazza: Yep, whenever I play a game I really enjoy the first thing I think of is "WOW, this game is great, I hope they make a squeal that is completely different!"
Or better yet, "WOW, this game is awesome, I hope they don't make any more like it."
Or best of all, "SquareEnix is going to remake ActRaiser? I hope it's an FPS now!"
The whole point of a sequel/franchise/remake is that it's "more of the same" otherwise it would be something different.
dry-roasted-peanuts

I can't get past the part in Wily's lair with the lava jets shooting all over the place. Theres this one section that you need to reach a ladder wayyyyyy up high....
I cant do it. :(
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku:
Wasn't one of the GB Mega Man bosses Mega Man from the future, thus making Mega Man not in X because of a time paradox?
Terance! - In Before What My Message Says
I loved Mega Man 9, and boy did I have a grudge match with the thing, but I finally showed it who's boss. Beating that damned game was more rewarding than anything else I've played so far this gen! No kidding. And I maintain that it is the hardest in the original series- after beating the game, I was so pumped that I went back and beat 2 on VC on one continue. I don't think it even took half an hour.
It was so nice to revisit one of my favourite series from my childhood, but have everything new and fresh. I almost regarded it as a gift from Capcom. :)
Anyway, enough rambling. I was gonna say, I spent so much time fighting with that game and screaming into the arm of the couch in rage that it never even occurred to me to look for secrets. Who are these amazing persistant and talented people who are finding this stuff?
bialia
@Scazza: Yes, this is the brilliant insight the star commenters bring. Kudos to the system, Gawker. Really highlighting the best and most pertinent, well thought out, and insightful commentary the community has.

@HalcyonX12:
Except, yknow, thanks to the wonderful world of achievements and trophies, you can easily the people who *have* beat it.
The secret is that you can't really beat the game, and everyone who says they did is lying.
HalcyonX12
@bableebooblah-new and improved.: I agree. All games are about looking for patterns and memorization in some sense. Old games were more strict since 2-D limited player options by virtue of focusing on a single plane of movement and certain conventions which 3-D games could never get away with such as having sprites able to extend movement well beyond a platform so long as a handful of pixels were visibly touching the ledge.
Having more room for movement and player controlled variables due to games being in 3-D just make games easier in general. They basically have to be to compensate for all of the extra options available to players and possible camera issues which is why no 3-D platformer comes anywhere near the challenge of the most difficult 2-D platformers, at least challenge not attributed to poor control or lousy camera positioning.

Could it be the Hadoken? That has been in other Megaman games.

@Scazza: I dunno. I hadn't played a Megaman game since I was probably 12 (aka: long time ago). A buddy lent me his Xbox 360 for a weekend with a whole load of games. I played Megaman 9 more then anything else. I had so much fun. I went back and found Megaman 2 and a couple other Megaman's and found that even if the MM's did start rehashing eachother over the years, there is a clear line in the sand on which MM games are good and which are not so hot. Megaman 2 and 3? Awesome, fun and super-challenging. Great level design. Good music. Some other Megaman games? Not so much.
Megaman 9 has fanatastic level design, good music, and the crisp gameplay MM is known for.
Megaman 9 was a revelation!
@Scazza: Mega Man 9 was possibly my favourite game last year.
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku: Too true. See Wolverine.
The "Origins" comic and movie, while entertaining, did make him a little less cool.
@johhnydamage: Wow. Thank you for all the time you spent on writing all that. Some of those sound like really cool secrets.
Wait why does it say
Edited by KOMRADE KAYCE?
KK are you hacking other people's account? or did you find a way to mimic other people. Oh god, MY account is in jeopardy D:
@Len Bias Cocaine Surplus: I'm down with that, so long as we get the Moon theme on Galaxy man's stage.
@Scazza: We hadn't had a Mega Man like 9 since 1997, so your point is non-existent. Yes, back in the MM series' heyday, it was like that. Look at MM5 - it's bad! But there was a huge break between 8 and 9.
There were MM spinoffs like Battle Network (now THERE's a series that got rehashed to hell), but no genuine back to basics Mega Man vanilla game for over 10 years. I think after 10 years, they're allowed to make a sequel, huh?
@Scazza: At this point, sounds more like you're annoyed that the game is not to YOUR SPECIFIC likings.
You can rant on and on about how originality is dead and everybody is a moneygrubbing asshole.
However, what game do you play?
Is it free? Probably not.
Has it been done before? Likely so.
If we like the game, and it gives them the signal to make more, then there's no harm. They're the ones taking the risk of it getting old. They're the ones betting on it being a success. You're the guy that'll choose to buy it or not. If you don't, that's fine. But don't get prissy because it's not fun for you.
I like my mario games. Repetitive, sure. Old, of course. Used out? Not at all. Which is why I spend my money on it.
@Scazza: Don't forget the fact that a DS game is pushing the Wii's hardware to the max!
@Scazza: You're an idiot for not buying this. WHICH ONE OF US IS RIGHT? I'll give you 50 MILLION dollars if you can prove your opinion is worth more than mine. Psh all the money in the world wouldn't prove that. Unless you gave ME 50 mil to admit your opinion is better. But you won't and it's not, so get the fuck out of here with your pretentiousness.
@jive238: Everyone is thinking about it wrong, obviously.
@Sensai: Dont even get me started on NSMBWii... no online? Same engine as the excellent NSMB on DS.... Nintendo is the master of making a few quick bucks.
@Courteous_Gentleman: The real mystery is why people without stars have to cry and whine about people with stars, instead of actually forming a counterpoint. Stars mostly mean nothing here anyway, saying everyone and their neighbour has one. Get over it, you dont have one, means nothing. Should I ignore your comments because you DONT have a star?
Either way, I have an opinion, I may not have voiced my opinion in the most people-friendly way, but thats how I feel. I hate on madden, I hate on wii cash ins, and I feel that Megaman series falls under the "cash in".
Yeah they add a few touch ups, and sure you can say that when its not broke, dont fix it, but then your admitting the game is the same, hence my original problem. Sure you may like that, but then you're also giving companies the sign to go ahead and release hundreds of shoddy remake cash ins every year.
In all honesty, Megaman 9 last year was a decent release, it was MEANT to be a cheap game based on the very original, and it was very well done (oldschool graphics and all). Im more bitching about the ton of other megaman games that come out yearly. Mostly DS games...
With our luck it's probably some developer's initials
@lolgreg isn't serious: Hidden Items.
- There is a hidden E Tank behind the clouds on Tornado Man's stage. It's in the beginning of the raining area (after climbing up the ladder). Use Rush Coil to get it.
- There is some hidden energy behind the "Dr. W" sign on Wily Stage 2. Use the hornet chaser to get it.
Weapons.
- Tornado Blow allows you to jump higher.
- Magma Bazooka can be charged.
- Hornet Chaser will grab items (except E Tanks) when there are no enemies around.
- Laser Trident passes through shields and can break destructible blocks.
- Rush Jet. You can fire backwards while riding it.
Tricks
- Lava beams (Magma Man's level) can be frozen solid with Concrete Shot and shattered with Laser Trident afterwards.
- Mega Man will turn black when shot by the octopus robot's ink (Splash Woman's stage). Even some of Mega Man's special weapons will turn black. Pressing start will remove the ink.
- If you inch Mega Man close enough to the vertical Lava beams, you'll see sparks flying off of his foot.
- If you buy Roll's Mega Man 8 outfit and complete the game, she'll wear it in her ending picture.
- Using the M Tank at full life and weapon energy will turn all the enemies onscreen into 1-ups. Doesn't work on bosses.
- Normally, Proto Man can only have 2 shots on the screen at once. If you equip Proto Coil/Jet, you can fire 3 shots.
- Pausing removes your special weapons from the screen. This allows for many tricks such as using Rush Coil and Tornado Blow together for very high jumps.
Cameos/Trivia
- We see Dr. Wily's serial number (19-871-217) in the intro. It's a reference to December 17th, 1987 (the release date of Rockman in Japan).
- Chun Li from Street Fighter II is the reporter in the intro.
- We can see scematics of Bass on the computer screen after defeating Dr. Wily.
- Fake Man resembles the generic robots from the Mega Man cartoon series.
Other
- These songs were recycled from Mega Man 2. Password/Continue screen (used in the menu), Game Start (when you select a boss), Dr. Wily UFO, Dr. Wily Castle, Get a Weapon, Game Over, and the Stage Clear jingle.
- The Ending song is a slow remix of the "stage select" theme from Mega Man 2.
- The "Rush Jet" song is a combination of "Get a Weapon" from Mega Man 2 & Mega Man 9's shop music.
- "Staff Roll" melody sounds somewhat similar to Super Punch Out's ending credits.
- In Endless mode, Mega Man begins taking more damage after some point. The damage seems to increase after every 8 bosses.
It's a secret to everybody.
Chinpokomon
@Scazza: If it ain't broke...
I mean, no one is giving that new multiplayer Mario game shit even though it's the same ol' same ol', right? Simply because something is repeated does not mean it's bad: it's only when bad stuff is repeated that people should be upset.
I see your point, though. The Mega Man franchise has been getting a bit tedious, ever since like X4. Anything pre-X4 though is alright in my book.
@Scazza: I'm sorry, are you suggesting that Mega Man II wasn't fun??!
warpwhistle
@Scazza: Anyone who can't appreciate Mega Man 2, 3, V(GB) or X1-4 is obviously a Reploid.
During the ending, Dr. Wily has a computer screen that shows Mega Man wearing a helmet with a double mohawk on it. I always wondered if that has something to do with it. And then it shows a circle that looks similar to a Metroid energy power up pointing at him.

@Scazza: 10/10 Excellent trolling, sir.
Altima NEO
@Scazza: The real mystery lies in why someone with a star commenter status feels the need to initiate a misguided crusade against Mega Man 9.
EvilBadman
@Scazza:
Madden is an annual cash grab. Most sports games are (soccer i think is the worst for that). Megaman tried doing things new, with new designs, new animation, and better graphics, and it tanked. people don't give a crap about graphics or new anything when the game already works great. There's tonnes of challenge, excitement and fun in the game because it stayed simple, and stayed true to its roots.
I swear this guy is trolling, unless there is some ridiculous process none could fathom to get the easter egg(like with the recent donkey kong easter egg) I don't see how this secret has yet to be found. Almost a year now since the release, hacker have dug up unused sprites, people have found all kinds of stuff and the secret has yet to be found? HAXXORZ!!!
@Scazza:
We got charged fucking 10 bucks for
a) New weapons
b) New levels
c) New bosses
d) New challenges
What is wrong with you Scazz?
@Len Bias Cocaine Surplus: That would kick ass. That game was awesome on the NES! I think?

@imikedaman:
Theres always been rumours that it was Zero who killed Megaman.
In X... 2? When Zero is first getting talked about and mentioned, there is a silhoutette of Wily in the background, meaning they were both alive and the same time. And Zero was supposed to be Wily's greatest creation.
And since Megaman doesn't exist anymore by the time X is awoken in the future, its why there are so many 'Zero killed the original Megaman' theories.
Its not so much to link 8 to X, as to further the link between the original Megaman and X.
Also, X has nothing to do with the roman numeral in this case.
@Scazza: But Megaman 4 had the awesome slide move and 3 had Hard Man. :(
@UCHU: Megaman ONE was fun, its not anymore. Everyone always complains about games like mario and madden every year being the same crap, and how it hurts the industry, yet the hardcore gamers for some reason still love this crap. The first one was a very solid platformer, theres only so much nostalgia you can take before you should realize your getting ripped off.
The real secret is that 5 months from now, they'll release a dlc pack that will show you what the secret is.
And it'll show you a picture of the dlc pack.
@Scazza: While normally I would say everyone's opinions are their owns, no matter what side of the fence they're on.
But I lost respect for your opinion when you compared Mega Man to the Madden series. Sorry!
dantemustdie
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku: Where did you hear it was going to bridge the gap between 8 and X? It seems like something someone would make up from thinking X means 10 in the game.
imikedaman
@Scazza: But Megaman is fun. I don't see your point.
@Scazza: Who gave this clown a star?
Courteous_Gentleman
@Kobun: i remember seeing a megaman anime a while back. It had megaman and megaman x in the same episode. i think they said the X came from a different timeline or something. I bet they can use that angle.
@Scazza: Your opinion adds very little to this discussion, I am afraid.
@Scazza: I wouldnt say that the megaman series is trash, i knew when i used to play it, it was pretty fun. as far as people buying it, its probably for nostalgia. It may not have top of the line graphics but i would still play it.
@BxB402: But that's part of the challenge isn't it? I mean, there's a whole genre of games dedicated to quick memory and pattern recognition. Like Simon, the game Memory, and so forth. The entire point is pretty much endurance and quick pick up.

Let me guess: The cake is a lie?
I_Like_Rabbits
@(Zombie) Goldwings: I'm also hoping to hear about what the earlier secrets were
@Scazza:
they got it right the first time, no need to change a winning formula.
@BxB402:
I think it's more hard just based on the patience you have to have to beat it.
in my honest opinion i still believe that old school games are a lot harder than the current gen ones. i do appreciate your point but i was only using halo as an example in my post.
as in some people being macho claiming that just because they beat a hard game, proves that they are the best, though clearly theyt are not.
bableebooblah-new and improved.
The secret is how idiots still buy this piece of trash series after the same crap repackaged every year with a new set of sprites. At least madden tries to hide is rehashes with tiny improvements. MM series has been the same crap since day one. And no, Battle Network dosnt count.
@BxB402: You don't need to memorize anything to beat a Mega Man game. What you said is pretty ignorant of the skill a Mega Man takes.
MM9 is my favorite game this generation (ironically).
I beat the game countless times, bought and enjoyed the DLC, got 100% challenges and tried pretty much every single combination of weapons and actions that made the slightest sense to find that secret.
While MM9 players were searching for this secret, at least some other interesting things were uncovered, small as they can be.
s-kill already mentioned that the secret is just "a little nugget", which means either that he wasn't expecting such huge frenzy or that he's just playing, adding spice to the cause.
People obsessed way too much about that empty slot in MM7, I guess this one secret could stay alive for a good while...
@Quilt: "Brush your teeth and don't be such a dick."

@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku: He is a robot, ya know. :p I figure if Superman can bite the dust to resurrect interest in the guy, Mega Man can, too. Yeah, it'll never happen, and I doubt too many fans pay much attention to the plot of any Mega Man game.
When the entire code is put into simple 1's and 0's, they can actually be translated into Sanskrit. The message is, indeed, the meaning of life.
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku: I thought MMX was MM10 - X as in roman number 10 - In order to give them a few games to finish up the original Megaman storyline.

@bableebooblah-new and improved.: So beating something that takes a retarded amount of memorizing is more elite than beating something that is insanely hard but changes every time?
I fail to see the logic in that. Though, I do give people that beat MM props. I didn't try that hard because i hate memorizing that much crap over and over again. I'd rather have a real challenge instead of a memory game.
My blind guess is some sort of secret attack, ALA the Hadouken in the first Megaman X game.
[ZTF]NSF Operative
I gave up on the game. I'll admit I never even finished it =[ It's too hard. I'm not even trying for any secrets.

I'm just going to say this is BS

@Kobun:
well, the only only way to beat mega man games are with trial and error. and, just like you said people don't have the patience to beat it. but the only hard part i found about it was that it just had those classic mega man frustration moments.
I'm so glad capcom released mega man 9. just so cause i love to see lgamers shit their pants in fury right after they said they are the best cause they beat halo on legendary.
they have no idea how hard the classics were. damn contra made me rage so hard right after i found out there was a cheat for it.
bableebooblah-new and improved.
Looks like Seth got a haircut! Havent seen the good sir since the Arcade expo down here in Japan when they first showed off SFIV!
The whole game gets resprited into Duck Tales 3
@Kobun:
Nah, because the moment they put in a definitive scene of Zero destroying Megaman, that pretty much ends the Megaman line of games. No MM 10 if the Blue Bomber is a dust pile, eh?
As opposed to constantly alluding to it which makes people dig for information. Sometimes the best stories are the ones between the lines.
The IWHBYD skull was found from the help of Hackers. Both Bungie and I wish they hadn't. Now everyone has that stupid helmet. Bungie hoped people would find it later to rally up excitement.
Anyway, get on them hacking source code!
Austin Kruckmeyer
@Komrade Kayce - Hero of Soviet Kotaku: That'd be neat, but that's something which really should have been part of the game proper if that's the case.
I never played Mega Man 9, so I'm not aware there were secrets.
Anyone kindly care to tell me what kind of secrets they are?
Or show me a montage of them via video or website?
If I have to guess, I say the secret is the secret (that was a terrible guess :P ).
@bableebooblah-new and improved.: Bionic Commando: Rearmed is far harder, at least on the hardest setting. Mega Man 9 is just pattern memorization, same as any other Mega Man game. It just seems harder because people today aren't as adapt or willing to do that to beat a game. I think unless a game has great graphics such as Ninja Gaiden, that kind of gameplay isn't tolerated, and certainly not across many titles.
I'm glad there is a "final secret." Back in the days of Mario 64, I'd look up Luigi codes online and no matter how many times I was told they were fake, I'd try running around that fountain in the courtyard 64 times without falling in or doing 100 backflips in hope that Luigi would pop out and congratulate me on being the only person in the world to find the secret. It would've made a kid like me so proud to have found one of those secrets.
I'm more than a little impressed at this secret.
A blind guess?
A Zero/X cameo somewhere. After all, thats the 'supposed' storyline connection between Megaman and X. That Zero was Wily's finest creation and put Megaman down before going to sleep for a while.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy:
Go read that whole thread. People have already torn everything apart for the game and found shit.
i hate to sound liker a wuss, but that game was really hard, i would hate to work for a secret ending. i found it easier to do a handstand while shitting up and over into a bucket while simultaneously juggling watermelons in one hand.
although this game was no mega man 2, it certainly had to be the hardest game of 2008. capcom really made people shut up who said games now just aren't hard enough.
bableebooblah-new and improved.
Wait a second, MORE MM9 secrets? What discovered ones have there been so far?
ShiftBreaker
Insert comment about DLC price and it should have been included in game.
Yeah im surprised someone hasn't hacked the code like they did with the first Halo 3 skulls
Michael Ortega
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: People have tried. It's hidden better than that.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: WAD?
Zanafer
Seth is such a legit guy. It's nice to see that, if questioned, he's the type of guy who doesn't just say "I'm not at liberty to speak", he always has an answer, even if it's a sneaky one.
I'm curious to know what some of the secrets are that HAVE been discovered...
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Ha see this is why we need old school achievements.
Pornosaur
You'd figure someone would have hacked the MM9 Wii WAD and find it.
