Check Out Korean Team Fortress 2 “Rip-Off” Gameplay Footage

When South Korean game company SK-Imedia released the trailer for its upcoming PC title H.A.V.E. Online, some freaked about similarities with Valve’s Team Fortress 2.

Now a gameplay clip is out, is there still need for the hyperventilation?

Previously, some were calling the game “an embarrassment” to South Korean gaming to which SK-Imedia replied, “Debating (as to if it’s a rip off or not) is like having blind men touching an elephant and describing what it looks like. We will reveal the gameplay soon. Other than that, we have no comment at this time.”

Even if the gameplay is different, its still a huge TF2 ripoff. I mean, the friggen Demo has an eye patch.

  • 4xis.black

It seems more accurate to call it a Quake ripoff than anything else, and they can hardly be faulted for that.

  • SHiZZAM

    @chungo:

I must have missed something, what's so bad about "dealing with valve" ?

    SHiZZAM

  • Platypus Man

To me, yeah, it looks a lot like TF2, but with less health and more damage from more weapons. It looked like every weapon was a one-hit-kill, and the character had, like, seven weapons.

Also, they only showed us one class/character. With all the differing capabilities of that one character, how different can the others be? Or does each person customize their own character that they always play with?

It looks interesting, and it might be fun, but it definitely looks similar to TF2, whether or not it actually is.

@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: Oh man, a voice that rivals the annoying Crazy Taxi voices. Giant no thank you.

    Rockabully

  • Rockabully

Video isn't loading for me. :(

Either way, I think we've already established this is a massive rip-off.

    Rockabully

  • TheWaffle

The game looks fun! At least, just for just deathmatch. I don't see that much of a similarity, since there wasn't any class action going on.

    TheWaffle

  • Hindesite

Honestly, I think calling this a TF2 ripoff is just a little extreme. There definitely are some similarities, moreso then most other games out there, but there looks to be quite a bit different, too.

Calling this a TF2 ripoff means that we should be calling all kinds of other games on the market ripoffs of their respective genre rivals. Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Blade? Definitely a ripoff. There can't be more then one ninja game on the market!! xD

  • SlinkyGuy

@Dangeresque the Observer: Hah that's funny. "Pleasant people indeed". I mean, when I send them an email concerning the Team Fortress 2 360 updates, they DON'T reply. Another topic is a different story though.

  • MorbidToaster

I want to play this...so badly...I love you TF2, but this just looks fun.

Also, I love the announcer, seems completely appropriate for the game.

  • RockyRan

@out-phaze: ..and fast runners using baseball bats as melee weapons? I mean, every game has that.

    Oh wait...

    RockyRan

  • RyderJ

@chungo: Really, it just seems like S4 League meets TF2. Which is win win. It'd be on my list if my computer could take anything stronger than Quake 3.

    RyderJ

  • GameBuddy - Doesn't like tomatoe

In Bashcraft's defense, the original trailer blatantly pulled scenes from TF2 and just reanimated it frame by frame with their characters. Kotaku pointed that out. I don't think what other people did with that knowledge is directly the Kotaku editor's fault. It's not like they asked someone to make all of the scene-by-scene comparisons that showed up soon after.

  • asdf4321

as long as there isnt a need for 'pixelshader' graphics support, i'll be trying this out. looks pretty fun to me

    asdf4321

  • Unfather

@chungo: As a reformed Steam hater, I can't think of any real reason to complain about Steam as it is today. It has minor problems, but they pale in comparison to the crap you have to put up with in other company's content management systems...

Try the software that comes with many casual gaming sites and you'll thank your respective god someone like Valve is out there showing that it can be done right.

  • mwoody

I swear I recognize the gong sound during the combat... Is that from TF2, too?

It's like Limbo of the Lost 2: Dolls and Crappy Announcer!

    mwoody

  • FearfulInsomniac

To be fair... it was kind of you guys who started the rip-off claims. You wrote an article about the similarities of the trailers, which I would say promptly turned a bunch of people who might have been skeptical into "OMG, TF2 RIPOFF NO WANT" people, aka trolls. And now, what, you say "some have freaked about [the] similarities?" Really now, to be fair, half of the trolling about this game was caused by your biased look at a TRAILER which does not show how the gameplay is. It's like crying wolf. And its a bunch of bull. Come on, Ashcraft, you're better than to do this kind of stuff, at least own up to causing some of the "controversy" surrounding this game.

  • Etheris

@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: South Korea is a spy!

  • odinkorn

@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: Hmh, i wonder how it is a "rip off", when you state "but they changed the gameplay a lot" that does not sound like a ripoff at all lol

  • Befitzero

The only way I would want to play that is if they ditched the guys voice announcing all the "double kills" and" Fantastic" it just got on my nerves in less then a minute and I cant see myself playing the night away with that voice pipeing out my speakers.

    Befitzero

  • WizarDru

@Mancomb Seepgood: Well, Star Wars is an acknowledged rip-off of a Kurosawa movie, actually, and the two shows are radically different....which I assume was your point.

All that said, while this is cosmetically like TF2...sort of...it's really nothing like it. It looks like a garden variety mod of any 3rd person shooter and very generic, at that. There certainly don't appear to be any classes or goals shown here other than deathmatch.

Honestly, the trailer made this look like a much better game than it actually appears to be. Very run-of-the-mill and nothing to really differentiate it from the crowd, other than ass-smacking girl dolls.

    WizarDru

  • bonghammer

@Dangeresque the Observer: Steam definitely got better. Oh, how I loathed it when it launched. Started playing consoles and forgot all about it until dawn of war 2 came out and had to use it again and I have to say it's not only alot better, it's how I want to buy my PC games from now on. I like being able to download my games again when I lose the disc ha.

    bonghammer

  • Zero1328

Hyperventilation is always a bit too much on anything, but even though some gameplay is shown now, it still doesn't really change the fact that the trailer was strongly compared to TF2.
It was still a terrible first impression, and alot of people were still turned away because of that. It'll still be some time before other things will outweigh that footage.

Nonetheless, it's probably still worth checking out some time.

  • Yamato

@Dangeresque the Observer: He's right, i had a problem with my game, my gf bought the hl analogy and for some reason i got a censored CD key, i emailed steam, the next day it was fixed. Great, very polite and fast service.

  • xCoolJackx

    @Révolution: Firefox 3.5

  • Zero_Armada

...Honestly, this doesn't seem like a TF2 rip-off at all. It's just an arcade-like multiplayer-orientated Third-Person-Shooter. Seems more like UT with cartoon graphics, even with the whole "customize your character" thing.

  • AZoMBiE

So it's Quake Fortress Team 2: Cross Arms Fire?

    AZoMBiE

  • deanbmmv

    @Bernoulli: same here.

  • glardchia

    @Bokusatsu_Tenshi: Seconded.
That voice just makes me want to kill something.

  • Alith

I don't see what the fuss is all about tbh. Companies do this all the time. Warcraft and Starcraft IP's are both weak copies of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k.

There are 11 million people subscribed to what is essentially Everquest with Games Workshop's IP and people pray to Blizzard like a god. Go figure.

  • Mancomb Seepgood

I'm really not seeing it to be honest. I mean, it's obvious where they got their inspiration from, but it's like saying Star Wars is a ripoff of Star Trek. There are similarities, sure, but rip off? Nah.

  • Tracid

That looks fun as hell, I hope they translate or localize this in North America.

  • Dangeresque the Observer

@Bokusatsu_Tenshi:This, times a thousand. I can appreciate wanting to add a system of positive reinforcement when the player is doing well. But that man is not positive reinforcement. He is torture, plain and simple. If I ever met a man that said "Fantastic" like that in real life, I would nail his mouth shut, and then ensure his genes would never spread. With a blowtorch.

To his crotch. Just in case that wasn't clear.

  • Dangeresque the Observer

@chungo: Do you mean deal with Steam, Valve's software distribution program? Because Valve themselves are the most pleasant game studio you'll ever speak to. And I mean that- if you email them with question, you get polite answers from people in important positions. They are good dudes.

If you ARE hating on Steam... you should try it again. It's a far cry from the nightmare that released with Half-Life 2, it's really a fantastic service. I say this with the hope that you can overlook my obvious Valve fanboyism (note avatar), and give it a shot- you won't regret it.

  • Révolution

    @xCoolJackx: Safari 4?

  • Geminosity

@That mop mutant from NES.: 'that shooter/sword korean game'? I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say Gunz or S4 League? I'd say Exteel but that's got mechs too :p

  • Bokusatsu_Tenshi

Well, it's TF2 ripoff alright, but they changed the gameplay a lot, so it might be worth trying...

But that narrator voice pisses me off. Seriously, I'd refuse to even playtest the game if you can't switch that off.

He sounds just like that stupid DDR Max 2 narrator... I'd like to meet someone that talks like that so that I can punch his face off someday.

    Bokusatsu_Tenshi

  • bugashi

Was I the only one hoping it'd be something more like Toy Commander crossed with a tournament FPS? I hope they make desktop battlefields... "Sniper on the bookshelf!"

  • Bernoulli

    I'm not seeing a video

  • chungo

Fanboi trolling aside.. I think I'd rather play this game so I wouldn't have to deal with Valve.

Also... I love in the video they highlighted keyboard controlled weapon changes.. ripping off Team Fortress 2 is one thing... ripping off Wolfenstein is another entirely.

  • lostmongoose

    @Alternate: Whoosh.

    lostmongoose

  • hallowhero

I think the game looks fun regardless if it's a rip off or not. TF2 is fun so does that mean a copy should be shunned because it borrows a from a great game that works? Even though this is a little uncomfortably close to TF2 that doesn't mean it's not fun. They never said it was an original idea did they?

    hallowhero

  • Kaneda

Anyone ever heard of the Korean game "Special Force"? It sure shared a lot with CS. I remember kids in Korea telling me how great this game was. Then I'd ask them about CS and most of them would say they had never heard of it. Same with Kart Rider and Mario Kart.

That was a few years ago so I don't know how things are now, but I remember being very surprised at how "self sufficient" Korea was game wise (and even movie wise). Of course there were places to buy Nintendos and Playstations, but most people were very happy playing PC games, most of them Korean.

That game looks really really fun.

  • out-phaze

I hate how people jump to "rip-off" so quickly.

Just because it's cartooney and has similar weapons, does anyone not realize that tons of games have rocket launchers, miniguns, and flamethrowers all in the same game?

    :|

Everyone who keeps bitching about "rip off" this and "rip off" that needs the WAAAAA-mbulance called on them. This clip should shut everybody up.

  • ballistic3188

eh other than the cartoon look. it looks like a standard FPS fare same weapons as every other FPS. and it seems you start with them all so there isn't even the team aspect. it seems to be quake with team fortress look and customization of a barbie dress up.

Say what? Regarding the "hyperventilation" comment it seems like the original news story was encouraging all the rip off accusations.

  • slowpokex2

Allowing a player to carry all the weapons from the each class instead of having them be class limited while the weapons, gameplay, and controls are extremely similar to TF2 doesn't make it not a rip.

Looks like TF2 + Battlefield Heroes then...

  • Kakkoister

@Kakkoister: But yeah, they probably did get a good amount of ideas from TF2.

Something like this would be much more awesome if it used characters from various video games of our past. Sort of like Smash Bros series meets TF2, but not just Nintendo/Sega based characters. This would take a fair amount of licensing negations though :(

  • That mop mutant from NES.

This game looks exactly like that shooter/sword Korean game with customization and Team Fortress 2 soundtrack over it.

While not first person, its another microtransaction Combat Arms/Sudden Death/BF heroes/ and the rest of the sub par generic garage.

  • Meteoric

Video doesn't work in FF for me but I can see it in IE. Yeah, looks like a cross between TF2 graphics style and UT/Quake gameplay but I gotta give credit to the person playing, he's pretty good.

  • WiNg0o

Ok so they completely rip BFheroes' interface, and give the character every gun in the game. Its basically old style fps deathmatch, with character customization.

    Hmmm...

    TaylorEatWorld

  • gunluva EDGE

Well, it definitely takes some stuff from TF2, but it doesn't seem to be a direct rip. Looks like you can either you can carry an entire arsenal with you, or you can pick up weapons from fallen enemies/comrades. Interesting WWII elements in that clip. (backpack, tanks in the map, Nazi banners)

  • Phantom_Photon

It's a pretty standard looking shooter, though I do like the character customization options and the cute gameplay mechanic.

As for the "embarrassment" controversy that came before, it's an FPS much like many other FPSes. There are strong cases you could make that TF2 cribs heavily from other FPSes, because it DOES. TF2's strength is in the fact that it took the roles taken on my many players in FPSes (usually due to weapon selection in any given game) and quantified those stereotypes as character classes.

Once again, it has been more productive to wait to see the final product rather than jumping on the bandwagon to dis or cheer a title before it has been released.

  • Phydeaux

@slowpokex2:This post doesn't does not not have double-negatives all the fuck over it.

  • Phydeaux

    @KommanderKeith:
"We'll make an announcement about it by the end of this year" 3 years running (it's been said in 2007, 2008, and here we are again in 2009) is not an appropriate response for a company that's supposedly so consumer focused.

We want communication, even things we don't want to hear, not outright lies.

  • SEX_BISON

I just don't see it. The game actually looks like a lot of fun. :/

    SEX_BISON

  • phor11

@balls187: I think they just did that for the trailer. It looks to me like H.A.V.E. isn't even class based, but instead you can design your character to have certain default weapons and then get power ups to change them later.
That's not really TF2 at all.
The trailer was certainly a ripoff, but the game doesn't really seem to be.

  • Boxworth

I'm surprised that a "rip off" is causing trouble at all in the game world. Music, movies, books and TV do it all the time, and I notice a lot of it in gaming. It's refreshing to hear anyone give a crap about the originality of an idea. Here's a point of discussion: Why is this only important in THIS particular instance? "Sampling" is usually either ignored or given praise in every other instance I've seen it.

  • amazinglarry

One of the most frustrating things I find about games today is the UI and Menu sounds. The 'clicks' are grating and in just about any game I'm given the option, I always mute the UI/Menu volume. Anybody else feel this way?

Also, the 'landing' noise is straight out of RtCW.

@Dangeresque the Observer: I love steam, except that I can't share games with my brothers and I had to buy THREE copies of counter strike: source. Another problem was that my friend (in RL,neighbor) had a BUNCH of steam games, got hacked, someone went on a VAC server, hacked, and his account got permanently banned. He has no chance of getting his account back and he tried appealing. Now he's stuck with garry's mod and non-vac servers. So, only two "minor" problems I have with steam.

  • KommanderKeith

@SlinkyGuy: Maybe they are tired of replying to that question when it has been answered many times already

  • sentroshi

@RyderJ: S4 League is awesome. Ya hear about the new arcade mode coming out? Just search it on youtube, only in Korea right now.

  • chungo

@Dangeresque the Observer: It's half true. Steam is certainly my main issue. But my problem is this - I played CS for years.. some of them professionally. I loved Team Fortress.. Half-life, HL2, even TF2. I bought Orange Box and had played TF2 for all of like.. 2 hours (literally it logs what class you play and for how long) I enjoy the game but didn't really have time to get into it due to raiding schedules on WoW. So I don't play for a good while. I come back to find that the VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) nazi.. err.. program has flagged me for cheating and banned me from all VAC servers for all games for all time. A decision which can't be undone, explained, or even verified in any fashion.

To this day I still don't know what the hell I did lol. Apparently I could make a new account and rebuy all of my games over again if I wanted to access the servers again.. but I still don't know what the hell on my system flagged their VAC... so I'd sending them more money to get banned again I imagine.

Seriously tho... if it's because I have Cheat O Matic on my desktop for cheating at NES roms... I'd laugh pretty hard. =P

  • Reil

@Platypus Man: From just looking at the two videos, I'm willing to guess now that there aren't classes at all. Just character customization, and lots of it. They decided to customize their stuff to look like TF2 classes, I guess.

  • Reil

@SEX_BISON: Yeah, too bad I don't have the twitch reflexes needed to decide which of like, 7 weapons I need for that exact moment.

  • MadelineOebalus

Looking at the Gameplay footage I'd say it's a bit of a cross between a game like Unreal Tournament and TF2, where you need to be constantly swaping weapons to overcome your opponent, but as others have said, I doubt it would hold people attention for very long past the initial thrill of it.

    MadelineOebalus

@Phydeaux: And they also have said that they are going to do it AFTER all the class updates have been created so they can do it all at once. not to mention they have to figure out memory issues with the added content they are putting in which they have also said.

So maybe, just maybe you should start worrying about it after that happens.
