Dragon Quest IX Already Being Hacked

Tomorrow in Japan, Dragon Quest IX is going on sale. But there is already at least one player who has conquered the game — by cheating.

This character is a Level 99 with max HP and MP, and it has 9999999 Experience and 9999999 G, making it way more impressive than Koichi Sugiyama’s Level 97 DQIX character and he composes the Dragon Quest music and has being playing the actual title for who knows how long.

If the game is this easy to cheat, then maybe it’s best that it doesn’t have actual online play, no?

"If the game is this easy to cheat, then maybe it's best that it doesn't have actual online play, no?"

If it was a competitive game I'd say yes, but as a coop game, that I'd most likely play with friends I'd say no.

@TheIrishNinja: I just skipped Xenosaga 2 after I played for several hours (loved the design but hated the combat and the V.A for Shion for the English was different). I then played the 3rd one read the story about the second one in the index and I didn't have to resort to cheating (plus I can't since I played it on my PS3 and even codebreaker didn't work.. stupid ejection protection scheme).

@N●Gage Croal: How can you say that? Atleast they (hopefully) supported the company's of the game they are cheating in.
  • BunnyForce
This isn't much of a shock. Every game can be hacked. This is just another one of those games. I wonder if he decided to go through the game before hacking it.
  • MrToblerone
When is this coming out in America? I'm terrible out of touch with suck things, but I do love this series!
  • HalcyonX12
I'm sure he hasn't been playing the game that long, it hasn't even been released yet. What, like they've been sitting on the game all this time?

  • UsernameOfTheDead
All DS and PS games are easy to cheat. PSP's Resistance: Retribution online play was ruined by the cheaters.

I personally do cheat once i beat the game. Or if im half way through the game and i find it not being fun anymore, then ill pop in the gameshark. Kingdom Hearts RE:CoM was boring as hell imo. I gameshark'd the hell out of that game :P

@N●Gage Croal: as already mentioned... cheating locally isn't a bad thing i think. i've played ff7 at least 4 times through and the 5th time i was messing around on the pc and wanted to just blaze through it so i edited the save files. goes for any game really... adding cheats can increase the longevity of a game. even if they want to cheat from the first time playing or use a strategy guide, if it makes it enjoyable for them then that's fine. some find the end result more interesting than the journey or just enjoy being completely pwnage throughout the game... in some cases, some may not have the time to grind and what not through a game (because of other obligations) but still want to experience it. as long as it doesn't degrade competition (i.e. achievements, contests, or online multiplayer) then i don't really care too much.

@Jawmuncher: Sorry for double post computer internet got wonky
  • B-ryon
Does the source say if an actual bug / exploit was used to level up so immensely? Because to me the more likely answer is that it is running on a pirate cart with memory hacks applied

@N●Gage Croal: Whats so bad about cheating a SP game. Sure this guy cheated a day before it even came out but like the article said at least there's no online. It would way different if he was getting online playing with peopl or something. I honestly don't see the problem in cheating in a game unless it affects the leaderboards for said game or messes with the MP. Sure he used a action replay like device but like I said he's not really bothering anyone. I never knew that cheats were so hated. Now I kinda know why cheat codes have pretty much just died out Since everything likes to play there game differently some people have more fun when they can run around with infinite ammo and what not. Just because they don't want a challenge like some others doesn't really make them wrong.

@KeroseneClimax: THANK YOU. Reading some people's opinions is just embarrassing for me as a person. "Dear cheaters: I hate you more than I hate pirates that NEVER buy games," for example. This is life. People can do whatever the **** they want to do! If you don't like the way they play games then BUCK UP PAL!
  • Bakamoichigei
@NinjaMarion: When I first noticed it, I edited some <br> tags into it, and they didn't do anything. ;< Glad to hear it's being looked into, because this is almost as annoying as hackaday's automagical "let's make everything lowercase!" comment filter. D:
  • NinjaMarion
@exkon: Who even says this is a Japanese person? The Japanese cart's been dumped and is floating around on the net already. My guess is this is just as likely to be an American, European (or anything other than Japanese, really) pirate playing it with cheats enabled on an R4 or other flashcart as it is to be a Japanese player on the actual cart. More likely, actually (as far as the flashcart part goes), since it's much easier to cheat however you want on a flashcart than an official DS cart.
  • NinjaMarion
@Bakamoichigei: You can still use manual linebreaks in html. Supposedly, it's (No auto linebreaks) a bug and is being looked into though.
  • jellyfish
well, it is up to the players themselves to use it or not. the game is actually available for d/l already on July 10 around EST 4am ! how do these people do it that quick ? with 2million pre-order, they will still get profit even with pirates around. and glad that the most japanese are still honest and smart enough to protect their own market for long term. piracy kills the industry, buy legal copies.

  • Outkastprince
@N●Gage Croal: Let them, who cares if they want to exploit or a cheat a game. Only ruins the experience for themselves and this is one reason why we don't believe anyone anymore when they "Sephiroth was hard?" and all you have to say "Yes, just not for you. Cheater".
  • rabidkeebler
I kinda feel that DQ cheating is validated by the amount of needless grinding you have to go through.

    rabidkeebler

  • Muramasa
    How is this even fun.
  • Kuroomu
@KeroseneClimax: Indeed. It's their game, they *presumably* obtained it through legitimate means, let them enjoy it however they please if it's kept to themselves. Also, judging by all the press he's getting, he's probably enjoying it more than most of us can imagine.
  • pressstart
Why does it really matter? There's no online Wifi anyway, so anyone you play will be local, and they can know exactly who's cheating. And with the amount of hate around here about cheating, it looks like they'll be punched in the face for it, even if they didn't do anything harmful to you.

@RyuuzakiBjorn: Ah. I remember MissingNo. I don't think I lost any Pokemon when I did that. I must have been super lucky. That was one of the few Pokemon games where I caught all 150 Pokemon. Good times. Back on topic, I agree with you though. I can't imagine the fun you have with a game you hacked from the beginning to the end. It seems like a waste of $35.

    Caylis

  • aevanko
What an idiot. This, like Dissidia, is a game that you don't hack because you are left with nothing else to play. These games are all about leveling up and enjoying the satisfaction. Hacking it is like taking yourself to the staff roll.

    aevanko

  • maxpower4649
I think the only other players he can find to play multiplayer with him will be other cheaters...

    maxpower4649

  • -MasterDex-
@N●Gage Croal: That's a bit extreme. I don't like to cheat personally because it takes the fun out of the game but in a singleplayer game, once I've completed it, I'd often throw on a few cheats and have a bit of fun. Multiplayer games are a different story, those hacking b*$£^"ds can go die in a corner.

    -MasterDex-

  • Krumm
I do understand the point of this article, but i really don't like the exposure this gives to cheaters. It's like making it worth cheating, so you become the news, some people really like attention that much. Well anyway, good for him, he managed to ruin all the fun on something as awesome as a new DQ game.

    Krumm

  • Kakeldan
@N●Gage Croal: The journey to the end is what you want out of a game (and I agree with you), but not necessarily what another person wants out of the game. My roommate played through Wind Waker using cheats to have full life and magic while staring at a walk-through. Is that how I would play the game? Heck no, I love the exploration of a game like that, but if that is how he wants to play the game, or another person wants to cheat to skip parts, it isn't my place to tell them otherwise - who hasn't used the warp tunnels in the original Mario Brothers? That said, anyone who cheats and ruins the game someone else is an ass. Resistance: Retribution is a good example - the game has good multiplayer (for a handheld), but you can't play a game without running into some jerk who is invincible, ruining the match, so I never touch it anymore.

    Kakeldan

  • CaptnRhay
this reminds me of FF christal chronicals for the DS. lots of cheating in that game aswell. i for one think it takes the fun away from it. but like TheIrishNinja said, if you cheat ONLY for the story then you wouldnt go on online with a "cheated" character. anyway, in online games its up to other people to say NO, and dont play with cheaters.
  • KeroseneClimax
Not a surprise, really. When people have the ability to cheat, cheating is exactly what some people are going to do. Doesn't matter when the game came out or how 'dishonest' it may be. That's just how it is. Me personally? I couldn't give a damn. As long as one person's cheating doesn't affect me or others, then I say cheaters should do as they please. Some players want the rewards without the work, big deal. Whose truly going to care at the end of the day? A bunch of faceless people on forums who aren't contempt with just worrying about their own copy? Give me a break. Hate cheating? Beat the game to it's fullest legitimately and show it off to the world. But shitting on others for cheating when it doesn't directly affect you is just pretentious in my book. Some people need to get off their high horse and let people do what they want with the property that they paid for, but hey, that's just my opinion.
  • TerribleDecade
Man the only game I cheat in is Fire Emblem. God that game is hella hard. I tried playing 4 and I cried myself to sleep.
  • Deenight
but can he have the satisfying feeling of having accomplished something? I DIDN'T THINK SO... sometimes if you're stuck and of course before deciding to quit it may be a reason to exploit to get over the hurdle but that should always be it...

    Deenight

  • Bakamoichigei
Okay, I get that this person is cheating and that the majority of us think that is bad. (I'm indifferent on the whole thing, chaotic neutral you know.) But what is this 'omg so easy to haxor' vibe? Are you implying that it is normally somehow difficult? Seriously, I learned how to find simple cheats for videogames when I was six years old. There's a single tried-and-true method for affecting stats and counts in a game. Using a memory mapping/editing tool, you first locate the value by doing something that would change the value you want to find while the tool monitors it. You basically keep asking it 'What changed?' and narrow down the memory locations by what you think the value should be now. And you keep doing that until you pinpoint the value you want to change, and then you plug in any value you want! You could use this technique to give Sonic max rings, or Mario max lives, and if your tool allows you to maintain a particular value, you could become invincible in a fighting game. I imagine it gets a little more complicated with something lke a modern RPG, but when I was a kid I was hexediting Dungeons of Doom and Wizardry characters. Just my two yen. :) Also, I LIKE HOW WE NO LONGER HAVE THE ABILITY TO CREATE PARAGRAPHS SO WE ALL LOOK LIKE ILLITERATES. Nice upgrade!
  • nago
@RyuuzakiBjorn: Yes, but you are playing these games for a different reason. Just as such that some people may not really enjoy gaming at all ... They are different hobbies that use the same medium. Some people just honestly get a kick out of hacking games: to you, it ruins the experience. To them, it IS the experience.
  • Flawless101
@ThursdayNext: Nailed it, as a person who does play some games competatively online I do rage when I see exploits being used, I don't have anything against people doing it in SP games as someone as already mentioned times you just couldn't be bothered dying to a boss for the 100th time and you cheat it to progress the story.
  • Karlott
Wow, bet that guy feels cool. I wanna be like him when I grow up. Why actually play the game?
  • the7k
@ThursdayNext: Yeah, anyone who uses sploits in a competitive environment is deserving of a special place in hell. Wave-dashing is one of (many) reasons I hate Melee tournaments. Hell, I hate even choosing a top-tier character in most fighting games - it just comes off as being cheesy in my book.
  • Shin
@TheIrishNinja: I know what you mean, I skipped most of the fights of dvd2, and ended up using all my items tu survive the last boss ^^'' but then again, III is such a gem :]

    Shin

  • ThursdayNext
@the7k: I must confess to using the W-Item exploit in FFVII, but it only has a limited effect on the game by reducing the need to grind for gil/greens when breeding chocobos. I'd never use an exploit against another person though. That's a low blow.

@N●Gage Croal: Do 'sploit users' count as cheaters? Because, honestly, the only way I can get into a Nippon Ichi game is if there is a sploit, like Phantom Brave's level 3-2 trick or Disgaea 2's lv9999 Nekomata trick. I only do it because grinding is the one thing I hate most about RPGs, and LORD do NIS games have plenty of it. Grinding just prevents me from enjoying the story at a pace which I desire.
  • Orian
Man, why even bother? That drains the fun out of it.

    Orian

  • TheIrishNinja
@N●Gage Croal: eh, cheaters suck but we know damn well why people cheat/hack some RPGs: you want the story and not the gameplay. for instance, i game genie'd (or whatever the shark thing was) my way towards the end of Xenosaga 2 cause the combat was awful and i just wanted to see how it went down & move onto part 3. no shame!

See I wish you had the option to cheat. I do not play JRPG for the gameplay. If I want to do menu navigation for hours I could go to work. I do love learning about the characters and seeing their stories evolve. Unfortunately this leads to me seeing the games as : Fun, grind, Fun grind. Why not let me cheat to skip ahead to the part of the game I want to see. I wish more games would take the Shadow of the Colossus approach and boil these epic stories to their substrate. Then really focus on epic boss battles instead of forcing me to do lots of trash encounters.

    trunkenmath

  • Pyro Jack Frost
@N●Gage Croal: Cheating is just another way of playing the game. I personally like to beat the game normally first, then maybe cheat to have a little fun. As long as cheaters stick to single player games it has no impact on my or your games so let them be, but when they start cheating in multiplayer games then they are just being total douches.

    Pyro Jack Frost

  • RyuuzakiBjorn
@nago: The fond memories of finding MissingNo and losing all the Rare Pokemon I legitimately caught... Such Sorrow, such frustration... But yeah, it was fun in a way, but that's because those cheats EXPANDED on the game, these kind of hacks, especially BEFORE the game is even bloody released just ruins the game, that's my opinion anyway.
  • N●Gage Croal
@Bastille: What's the point of playing a game if you remove all the challenge to it? Playing video games isn't about getting to the end, it's about the journey to the end. You remove that journey, you might as well not bothered playing. And what about cheating in multiplayer games? What's the point? You didn't really win. It's like taking steriods: you do it because you can't rely on your own skill to be the best. ... And I did forget that DQ9 had no multiplayer. Bah.
  • GLaDOS
@N●Gage Croal: Why? If there are no leaderboards or achievements or competitive online, who cares?

Cheater has nothing to say about his real life except that he's a loser.

@Witzbold: Now, Now. Some people really do enjoy hacking. I have very, very fond memories of picking apart Pokemon Gold with a Gameshark. The only issue comes when these people are ruining online experiences, and, as long as that is not happening: let them hack, god damnit.

You know what this game is what Heroes of Might and Magic 2 had. If you ever used the black dragon cheat or any other you'd get 'CHEATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' as your title in the ranking of your private board. Believe me, that made a lot of people not want to cheat. But then again that was 96.
  • Bastille
@N●Gage Croal: No no, they're only worse if their actions ruin things for other people. It's not as bad if it only affects themselves.
