Dragon Quest IX TV Ad Minus Boy Band Fishing

Japanese’s most famous boy band SMAP appeared in a much publicized commercial for Dragon Quest IX. Not everyone likes SMAP, though.

For those folks, here are two SMAP-free ads. You could say they’re de-SMAPPED.

@gold163: I don't think IIX is a Roman numeral... you have me baffled sir. I think you meant VIII? Anyways, I actually enjoyed VIII. I thought the graphics were spectacular, the story was splendid, and once I accepted their "don't fix what's not broken" approach on their gameplay, it was entertaining.

Like they need to advertise that game there...

@Bluestreak2: If you have a DS, I'd highly recommend grabbing DQV. That game has one of the best RPG stories I've ever played, and one of the few JRPGs that I didn't want to put down at the just-over-halfway ennui point. It's witty, charming, and just plain well written.

@Bluestreak2: I started and ended with IIX. Well, that's not really true; I have played other DQ games, just not for extended lengths of time, and few of them were numbered installments. I have the intention to play the other games in the series, but my goodness was IIX boring. It's also as generic as they come, and it just drags on and on in my opinion. Anyway, you should try it, just to see what you think of the series. I'm not kidding when I say that if you've played one Dragon Quest game, you've played them all. People either love or hate Dragon Quest.

@chronomasakari: I don't agree, but a lot of people seem to have the same opinion, so it's worth being heard.

Maybe I'll get bored of Akira's work one of these days, but Toriyama and Dragon Quest together are a 20-plus year tradition. A lot of people (prob. from the US side of things is my guess) are usually looking for the next evolution of a series, but totally understand how people who have been playing this game and enjoying it throughout their lives are looking for another hearty meal with the same great flavor as everything they've dined on in the past.

It's probably best not to get your hopes up for a change in art direction for any of the future installments.

@p.e.r.e.g.r.i.n.e.: Man, I have so many situations that that video could apply to. I think I'll start using that link a lot now.
  • p.e.r.e.g.r.i.n.e.
@PeteyCoco: a couple of times actually.. I don't want to go into it but I had this copy of FF12 go out on me.. I took it badly..
  • Bluestreak2
I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person alive who has never played a single Dragon Quest game... Curse my need to play every game in a series in order, even when the games don't actually carry anything over from one game to another.
  • PeteyCoco
@p.e.r.e.g.r.i.n.e.: So you pissed on Square Enix?
  • Go Go Gadget: Gizmo
@(Zombie) Goldwings: That's word on the street. I personally loved DQ I, II, and III. I played them all (DQI&II on the same cart) and DQ III by itself. I actually like DQ I the best... such a classic. So much fun!

I started playing Dragon Quest 8 for the first time last week. I was always a fan of the originals for the NES, and I was quite amazed at how it really hasn't changed much over the years. I think 8 is also Akira Toriyama finest work for a game, but 9 seems to be a step backwards as far as that goes. I, for one, hate chibis.
  • Bluestreak2
@gold163: New commenting system is weird. Anyways, the only problem I have with his character designs is that they ALL look the same, and since DBZ was the first time I saw his artwork, everything else he does just reminds me of that.

Square Enix and I have been in a bit of slump lately.. The upcoming Crystal Chronicles... The endless countdown clocks... But somehow Dragon Quest IX just seems to make it better. Hmm to adequately convey my emotions I think I am going to have to borrow from a well known piece of cinema. In this scene replace Lloyd with the Square Enix Logo. Change the Motorized Scooter into a copy of Dragon Quest IX And replace Harry with ME (same outfit though) I think that sums it up nicely yes..

I just noticed in the corner theres a NINtendo wifi logo... and before nd the last post it said it doesnt.. now im confused

It sure would be nice if normal TV over here came with a de-SMAPping module... I am surprised to find that I am slowly starting to get excited about this game, despite myself.
  • chronomasakari
It might be too late for DQ10, but it would be nice if DQ11's main artist is someone besides Akira Toriyama. I know they're all about keeping it old school with DQ9 but we could really use someone that... That whole DBZ look is getting real old, and I just played as Goten and Trunks in Blue Dragon not even a few years ago, I'm tired of being Goten and Trunks!

@UsernameOfTheDead: Agreed, all this DQ9 coverage has me cursing SE for not having a simultaneous release for this. I may have to go put another 80+ hours into DQ8... and love every minute of it!
  • PeteyCoco
@conditionals: Pap Smear has just been abbrieviated to SMAP... funny, you'd think it would be PASM
  • conditionals
SMAP? Isn't that something that older women get from the doctor?
  • PeteyCoco
I know this is off-topic, but does anyone find that Kotaku is very memory intensive now? I opened task manager and it takes up 130 MB of mem. I know my comp is crap, but jesus.
  • gold163
... ...Nope. I'm still not a fan of Akira Toriyama's art. Is this confirmed for international release? Though, I have to admit I'm not a terribly big fan of Dragon Quest.
  • AncientUnknown1
@Go Go Gadget: Gizmo: I wouldn't hold your breath. I'm expecting sometime late next year or early 2011.

Can't wait to play this. I had a great time with Heavenly Princess and this looks to improve upon that game in pretty much every way. Woo Hoo!
  • (Zombie) Goldwings
I just can't get into the Dragon Quest games anymore and sadly DQV was the only one that I enjoyed. Still can't believe DQ seem more popular than FF in Japan (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
  • phinehas
@UsernameOfTheDead: Same here - DQ5 was an unexpectedly pleasant playthrough for me (and my first DQuest).

They were talking about this game on the news this morning and I decided I'm gonna try my best to get it tomorrow and join the fever. It's been 5 years since the last release of DQ, so it's not too often that you get to join in such a phenomenon.

  • Go Go Gadget: Gizmo
Still no word on the US release date? I can't wait for this game.
  • UsernameOfTheDead
I am really excited to get this game in my DS. I am replaying FF7 right now and it made me realize how great Square was. I have all their DS remakes and they are excellent. I hope a new game like this can stand up to the oldies.

@chronomasakari: Getting OLD!??!?!?! Then I suppose you'd also get tired of having Yoshitaka Amano doing character designs for Final Fantasy then, huh? Frankly, I LIKE Akira Toriyama's designs and hope he does Dragon Quest character designs for as long as he can. I also like the use of the same theme song, and even sound effects over the course of ALL the games. While other RPG series tend to take things in new directions and abandon their original roots, Dragon Quest has remained firmly rooted in where it started from and grown like a tree from it. Gameplay, theme song, sound effects, time period and setting, and difficulty have all stayed the same. It's because of this that the series has been able to do so well. Dragon Quest explicitly caters to those who want a more traditional RPG experience and that's one of the reasons it has been so popular. I'm looking forward to this. ~Otaku-Man

@hanulbada: Whoops. Now I feel stupid. But still, despite the game being pretty, the "don't fix it if it's not broken" attitude really hurt it, I thought. I mean, if you thought that it was fine, that's great, but I thought that it was broken in the first place.
