DS Plugin To Help Diabetic Kids Keep Consistent Readings
Pharma firm Bayer has created a DS plug-in built on the idea that diabetic kids typically lose track of no-fun things like glucose meters, but rarely lose fun things like gaming handhelds.
No, the “Didget” isn’t a kind of Vitality Sensor; it goes into the DS/DS Lite’s Slot-2 and rewards players giving consistent readings with points in a game that can be used to buy items or unlock levels. It doesn’t sound like the game itself has anything to do with diabetes or testing, it’s just the vessel through which the Didget rewards a player’s consistent monitoring.
I’m not in a household with a diabetic child, but I was in one with a recently diagnosed adult; I can testify that testing yourself can be a real bitch, and doing it consistently requires some discipline, which younger kids may not have. The Didget sounds like a helpful peripheral, although some might think buying a video game attachment rewards, rather than corrects, a kid not taking responsibility for himself. I guess it depends on the age. One thing, however, since this requires Slot-2, it’s not DSi compatible.

@Ur-Lord-Crypy: As one of the previous posters mentioned, there is nothing fake about this meter. Just like every other meter, you'll still have to draw blood to get a reading.
@GraywolfofMibu: I'm neither obese (I'm actually incredibly skinny) nor did I have a family history of the disease, yet somehow, I got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was in high school.
I really hate that everyone thinks that it is always the fault of the diabetic that he has the disease. There was absolutely nothing I, or majority of the kids I've known with the illness, could do about it.
Also, Type 1 (the more serious type) has no link to obesity. Type 2 (adult onset) is the one that could potentially be linked with obesity.
@relic1980: If you don't like pricking your finger, I'd suggest you try out the Freestyle meter. You can use your forearm with it and it doesn't hurt in the slightest bit.
I'm a diabetic and the only reason this sounds like a bad idea to me is the fact that testing strips are so damn expensive ($67.00 for a pack of 50). Doctors tell you to test six times a day which adds $10.00 to your cost of living per day. I can't afford that (since I pay for my strips out of pocket) and I only test when I feel like my sugar is high or low. It helps that I have a pump, so my sugars are better regulated all around (without the need for extra testing).
Anyways, back to my point: this thing will motivate kids to waste test strips by getting them to test too often. I guess that works out for the test strip manufacturer, but it would suck for parents of diabetic children.
@namesRhard: I'd love to, but it's hard to come back to it.
Also: Dr. Mario subscribes peels. And lots of them. The next game comes with a dispenser.
Devil_Dan
@Odie20XX: Blood is overrated.
Devil_Dan
@Ur-Lord-Crypy: I like the CT peripheral better. That really gives you an inside view.
Devil_Dan
@Pult|Ost - Dark Days Are Coming: There's no Portal for the DS.
Devil_Dan
@RPharazonius: Douche?
@flamincheney: "related" is such a fun term, the same way people are "Dying" from swine flu
All have underlying conditions (in the UK at least) vary from breathing difficulties to serious mental conditions but if any of them happen to die _WHILE_ infected, its due to the swine flu? :X Don't we love the media
@icepick314: I'll do you one better: DS birth control.
The Amazing Exploding-Man
href="#c14053632">sereal: Not necessarily. I've been a type 1 diabetic since I was 11. For a while, I actually thought I would be healthier than most people because of the diet I had to stick to. I had no idea of the impact poor treatment could have on me. I also had no idea there were some negative effects that cannot really be avoided, even with proper care, and treatment.
cinemandrew
@abort_user: I got my copy for free when I was in the hospital after being diagnosed as type 1 diabetic. Not really a fair trade if you ask me...
cinemandrew
@RPharazonius: Wait, no, what's that word? Not dick, but something somewhat less offensive?
Assume it was a word that was insulting, yet not too insulting, but got the point across.
@GraywolfofMibu: If a person eats processed food, smokes, or generally lives longer than most people, they will more likely develop cancer than a person who doesn't eat processed food, doesn't smoke, and lives to the age of 10.
Now, stop being a dick.
@MoeB: fELIXADER is right. Neither the vitality sensor nor this product will ever, ever be justified...
illiniphase4
@Kazzahdrane: If a person is obese they will more likely develop diabetes than a person who is not obese.
@roscoe: You make it sound like kids are morons. Most of them know what happens if they don't manage their blood shiz
sereal
@GexX2: yes..but apparently adults do need their DS to help them quit smoking. Personal Trainer Stop Smoking. I wonder whats next..Personal Trainer AA? Personal Trainer Internet Porn Addiction?
tehdorkz
I picture this being somewhat difficult to trade in used at stores..
tehdorkz
@GeluAnimus: So your comparison is "a tad too late to maximize units sales/lives improved".
Fair enough, but there's never a 'too late' when it comes to saving/improving lives, in my mind.
@Omnimon: DSi is laredy out. And while of course i dont think every kid in the world is going to make the change, It would have gotten a better response at least 1 year ago.
GeluAnimus
This game discriminated against those of us who don't have diabetes.. now I'm off to go down 5 bags of sugar so I can play this.
@GeluAnimus: Too late in relation to what?
@RPharazonius:
Yes
@Odie20XX: Lol, yes, definitely not to be used for level grinding.
Masterpain22
@bardofawen: You are correct sir. I thought it was just a fake reader. I didnt realize it was for real.
I doubt this will ever be available in the US though. To many kids either would abuse it and need transfusions, or youd have kids going around sharing the game pricking each others fingers and passing diseases.. I dont see it mentioning anything about sterilization or replacment needles. :)
Ur-Lord-Crypy
Type 1 Diabetes is really tough to go though for kids and I hope this makes it a bit easier for them. Then again kids with Type 2 should probably be outside burning off some calories rather than inside playing video games.
My girlfriend is about to finish her Psychology degree so she can be a counselor for diabetic kids - she thinks this is a great idea, having gone through it herself (she's type 1.)
Schmeg Peg
What people may not realize is that juvenile-onset diabetes is a very serious disease. In later life it turns into a vascular dysfunction, which can lead to blindness, due to a breakdown of the walls in the blood vessels of the retina, and to amputations due to circulatory problems to the extremities. Oftentimes diabetics will need to have toes or legs amputated in order to combat gangrene as a result of a lack of oxygen to those tissues.
Proper management of blood sugar by means of continuous testing and timing of meals and insulin injections can prevent these complications.
It's an excellent thing that Nintendo and Bayer are teaming up to help diabetic kids manage their illness.
Well I don't have Diabeetus, that I KNOW OF..
I might get it though....just so I can prick my fingers every few hours...drink some blood *totally not a vampire*
Weird how they didn't make one for the DSi...are kids with diabetes not good enough to have one? :|
NekuSakuraba
@MoeB: No it isn't and it never will be. Never.....NEVER..... EVER.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: He's just thinking of the candy he can't have.
until.december
@GeluAnimus: Do the other 10% live forever???
I figure life has a mortality rate of 100%.
I assume you mean that 90% will die of causes related directly to the diabetes.
flamincheney
@carrliadiere: How else is he supposed to hold that giant meter?
@TheUncleBob: The same goes for uninfected people.
@carrliadiere: lol... observational comedy.
so stupid..
I'd just cheat and use an Action Replay... No damn machine is takin' my blood!
TheUncleBob
Whoever designed this needs a reward. I can see this actually helping kids get used to testing. So when they get older and more responsible, they'll test themselves without the help of the DS. It's like Diabetes training wheels.
GexX2
@GeluAnimus: I'm willing to bet that 100% of infected patients die. ;)
TheUncleBob
If I was a kid I'd possibly find this some fun, but then, when I was a kid I didn't have diabetes (I do now, and pricking my finger for blood each morning is a bitch).
I just got a grand idea! Devise a glucometer that, when you shove the test strip into the device, Elvira's voice gently requests your blood! WIN! (we adult males need something fun too!) ^_^
@icepick314: The most expensive device you'll ever piss on!
Messypandas
@Raspberyl's Lover: I didn't have a star before posting my comment. Now I do. My head hurts.
Raspberyl's Lover
next in line...
DS Pregnancy Tester...
Good thing this isn't on 360, all the non-diabetic kids would be milking it for achievements.
"Perfect Reading: 100g"
@MellowJade: You've been living for an hour now, why not take a break?
@PeteyCoco: It'll be like boktai, except I have to run around stealing children's blood instead of enjoying the sun! :D
Too bad I have a DSi :(
@Ur-Lord-Crypy: I think you misunderstand. This is a real glucose meter. There's nothing fake about it. You still have to stick your finger and apply blood to the test strip. It just has the added feature of awarding points in the game that comes with.
bardofawen
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: No, He's the Diabetic Hero!
Diabetic Hero?
@Pult|Ost - Dark Days Are Coming:
pure win
Neat stuff. Next: A peripheral that cures cancer?
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: That's a perfectly fine value, since the meter is set to mmol/l, the standard to measure glucose blood levels in Europe. To get mg/dl you multiply it by 18, so I can understand that it looks awfully low to somebody used to measuring by weight and not molecular count. Granted, 5.2 is on the lower side of the recommended spectra, and I would definitely not start a gym pass with it.
@Raspberyl's Lover:
LOL
@Weirdwolf is MMMEELLLTTTING!!: You know, after a deep research, i found that chances of survival ARE 50/50, but 90% of patients with Ebola die, but since this spreads mainly in Africa, that would explain a lot.
And since Im in Mexico I would probably die.
GeluAnimus
Curious...
@MellowJade: It appears that way, doesn't it?
@Weirdwolf is MMMEELLLTTTING!!: As far as statictics go, 90% of infected patients die.
We all wish it was 50% though :/
GeluAnimus
@GeluAnimus:
No you don't, depending on the strain of virus, treatments available,(anticoagulants etc.) and the persons general health you can have up to a 50/50 chance of surviving an infection with the Ebola virus.
Diabetes is dreadful, while the prognosis is a lot better now than it has ever been before the problems with the extremities and eyes really do make it awful.
What's scary is the rate at which children and adults are falling to Type two diabetes mellitus which may be linked to obesity.
@Pult|Ost - Dark Days Are Coming: Hi!
CombatDispenser
Being a diabetic and probably Gawker's youngest reader, I still find this stupid.
*Continues to play BF: BC*

So pretty much Nintendo has become my doctor.
Holy shit look at that kid's arm.
Pretzels
@BubbleF**kingBuddy:
Shocked that his hand is twice the size of his body, maybe?
All this tells me is that DSi is horrible for another reason
Do hope there's a limit though. Otherwise kids might farm their vessels for good items...and humans kinda need blood.
@roscoe: furthermore, i think that providing a positive reinforcement will encourage and increase the chance of the child to "take responsibility of himself" - it's operant conditioning and will "correct" the child.
Why doesnt nintendo just make a handheld for health conscious.
Youve got your pedometer, now a fake diabetic checker (because im sorry you gota get used to the pain of the needle at some point)
Now all we need is portable treadmill, Am IV station in case you get dehydrated or need some morphine ;)
and the DSI+365 HI model comes with diphibulator paddles, For when your already to fat for it to matter, and decide to go work out and have a heart atrtack
Ur-Lord-Crypy
the unfallible method to make a kid take care for himself is: buy the DS, this peripheral and another normal tester, then if the kid doesn't act well act like "ok so I need to test you myself with this other one, no more gaming for you", then watch it prey for using the other tester :D
It's a game powered by the blood of young children! The power of Christ compels you!
Nice meme drop there Owen, apart from that this seems like a good idea but would the kids really be that into it?
Diabetic kids with DSi will feel cheated
@Kazzahdrane: Wheres the sugarless cake dispenser?
Corrected. :)
GeluAnimus
@Jonbo298: Ebola, no cure, no way too keep you alive.
Oh, and eventually you just bleed from all you body and die.
GeluAnimus
While the concept is very good (its reallt hard to live with that condition) didnt it came a tad too late perhaps?
GeluAnimus
Paul noticed that although his son Luke was constantly losing his blood glucose meter, he could always find his Nintendo Game Boy.
that is charming. kids always seem to have this intuitive sixth sense to find their beloved toys. i think this is a great way to help children learn and maintain their blood sugar levels. bayer, ur doin it rite.
@RPharazonius: DSi = DiabetesScreeninginsensitive
@Pult|Ost - Dark Days Are Coming: Very funny, keep up the good work.
Seriously, go learn about diabetes rather than perpetuating myths like kids with it eat cakes all the time.
this is much better than Captain Novalin which diabetes education for the snes. i actually own a copy of that game from the time i almost married a girl with diabetes who happened to game just about as much as me. in fact
abort_user
@RPharazonius: One thing I know is worse then Diabetes is having Celiac. NOT easy to live with....
Where's the cake dispenser?
Does this mean that the DSi hates diabetic kids?
Also, I think this is a pretty awesome concept. My best friend's father has diabetes, so I can see that it isn't exactly the best thing to have. My biology studies also point out that it rates pretty highly in suckitude on the list of Relatively Common Things Or Diseases That Can Kill You If You Ignore Them.
Very innovative, to say the least.
Damn lucky diabetic kids nowadays. Oh to be young again, and diabetic.
(It's a joke, don't throw rocks at me too hard. Diabetus is a serious condition.)
Kyle D Johnson
Wii Vitality Sensor is now justified!
MoeB
Is that boy in some sort of diabetic shock?
Well. Interesting to see people are STILL finding new ways to incorporate good health into gaming. Good show!
frank0127
@Jonbo298: Sharing Time, here:
I'm diabetic and my girlfriend is Gluten intolerant/Celiac. Grocery shopping is interesting and medical expenses are X-TREME (like expensive, not doing a handplant on the edge of your empty swimming pool).
I'm tempted by this, only because it's a great excuse to drag my DS with me into fancy restaurants. "What, I NEED THIS! It's for my diabeetus!" *mario kart sounds*
Maybe this will warrant a sequel to Captain Novolin
