@Hraesvelgr: Anything is "easy to abuse" if you are a gigantic wuss. Doesn't mean everyone does. Though I do abuse it sometimes now that i have the perk that refills the ap if you get the kill. VATS is nearly useless against ghoul reavers and albino radscorps, though. They have Insane health.

You always have the choice of blasting regularly or with VATS. and i use both.

@BxB402: You kiddin'? VATS was easy to abuse even at low levels because of the ridiculously high rate that your AP replenished.

@Zonrith: Will you please stop saying "FPS" when what you're looking for is "TPS"? Even if the main difference is viewpoint, there is a difference between the two.

If he means "elements" of RPG's or.. if he just means adding more complexity to shooters, then I can understand what hes saying.

It's like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Isn't that an awesome title for a game?) anyways.. its a fighting game, but it has elements of an RPG, you can level up. And that's really cool.

That's the one thing I have always hated about final fantasy.. and basically any other RPG that came out of Japan. (I love the stories..just not the game play) Its that lack of "real action".. I don't like going into sub menus and saying.. Dodge.. cast magic, attack.. defend, heal... that's BS to me.

@El Critiquel: In order to play either of those games properly you had to pause the action. It was either that or be terribly gimped and miss out on 90% of the gameplay. So, please don't say that because it is incredibly misleading.

Am I the only one who thinks that's a good idea? A few RPG elements in Gears of war? I mean they'd have to change some things and they'd have to be careful how far they took it, but I think it could strongly enhance the experience. Imagine a gears paced similar to a JRPG. You have the world and you can go talk to people and toy around in it, but it's largely linear when it actually concerns missions and such.

I wouldn't want them to have a leveling system because I think that would toy with the core mechanics, but being able to collect money and treasures to sell and then having an inventory system akin to RE4 (only with the ability to assign the items in the menu to 4 slots on the d-pad). I think that sounds awesome. What if all of the weapons were highly customizable. What if you could put a chainsaw on your lancer, or a flamethrower. I think it sounds like a good idea. They just shouldn't make it like Mass Effect or Fallout 3, maybe more similar to Bioshock. Simple RPG mechanics with great shooter gameplay. I like the sound of that for Gears.

@Theoutlet:The pacing of the game is independent of whether it is an RPG or not. He isn't talking about Gears OF War: D&D edition! The RPG aspect of these hybrid games comes from the character customization, new weapons, xp and skill leveling. I dont see how that would slow down a twitch based shooter. And in both Mass Effect and Fallout 3, pausing the action was completely optional.

@Passa: Even so, it's better than every other FPS to come out this generation, sad as it is.

The FPS these days is a pretty sad example.

@Black-Dog-Howls: MOST DEFINITELY THIS. Deus Ex is one of my favourite games of all time, an unparalleled experience. I don't think it really excelled in the 'shooting' component, being plagued by poor AI and sometimes irritating gunplay.. but it is, as far as I'm concerned, the best combination of these two genres, ever.

@reality.exe -console: Yeah BioShock. Did a great job of dumbing down what was done far better 7-8 years before it.. that must be the most ridiculous example ever.

We are already seeing this with Skate board games...

FPS the most popular genre and the easiest games to spit out mixed with over priced controller gimmick variations with each sequel could mean major profit.

@Raspberyl's Lover: Eh, I'm thinking STALKER. Fallout 3 is an RPG with some guns, STALKER is a perfect mix of the two ideas, where the guns are gunny, but you have them in an inventory and they have a weight and you have anomalies to level you up. It's also fucking awesome.

I'm thinking he's referring to the COD4 online multiplayer system where you level up, unlocking more guns, you customize what you want and you have ranks. Where you put hundreds of hours into it to "level up" similar to an RPG. Gears 2 and most shooters are following that now.

I'm not even a fan of 'CliffyB' but I gotta say this whole 'Dude Huge' thing is just dripping with, I don't know what... but either way, you need to drop it. I don't know if you have a secret crush on the guy, or if he took your starting short-stop position in middle school but, seriously, that has not been even mildly amusing for a looong time.

I dont like traditional RPG elements in my FPS games. I am a badass with a gun, I don't want to have to upgrade his health, weapons and armor to start having fun.

More Bioshock and Mass Effect? Yes please.

@Leanid: I personally felt the FPS properties of Mass Effect were notably inferior to Fallout 3...even outside of VATS. The FPS elements really dragged Mass Effect down, IMO. Not to say it can't work, but it needs to be fluid, like a "normal" FPS.

@BlueToast likes parenthises.: Eh, everyones open to their own opinion, I really enjoyed Fallout 3, not to say it was the perfect game and had no problems, some of the shooting mechanics were of, as well as the RPG elements, but I found the overall experience very entertaining. Both of you are right though, it's still pretty early in this style of game, and it's going to take developers a while to find a formula that really works.

I had some fun with it, but it could have been better, that being said many games could be better, so it's not really a bad thing in the end, it gives companies a chance to see what was wrong and turn out a better game in the future. (look at me getting sidetracked as well) However, these lacks of color are a real eye strain for me, I just have terrible eyes tbh, granted yes, the grays and browns and whatnot are very generic, and a bit boring, the pain it brings my eyes gets to be too much to bare even after just maybe an hour of playing the game.

Granted, the customization was subtle at best but surely allowing for you, the player, to decide how the protagonist looks while at the same time using pre-defined back story and progression to develop the character emotionally is feasible.

Going back to your GTAIV example, I feel Niko was Niko because of the character Rockstar created, had he looked different, he still would have been Niko at the heart of it....although I can see how a fat chinese-serbian who likes tiger thongs could prevent any emotional hooking.

@Curse_Lily: I think, to an extent its good. However, some people don't like going through the hassle of making a character and would rather not start the campaign at all rather than use the default or a slightly cross eyed buck-toothed character *cough gf cough*

Also, You have to consider that when you allow the players the ability to make a character, it takes some of the control of how the story or character will develop, out of the writers/developers hands. For example, I think GTAIV had more of an emotional impact because of who Niko is. If you were able to make a fat chinese guy who likes tiger thongs in his place, the game wouldn't have been the same. Saints Row on the other hand, was great because of the customization. I think it all depends on context. I would hate to see any kind of extreme make-over ability if it came to a game like Bioshock, but then again, I guess you can customize the powers.

I don't think so. As generic as the visual style of the games are, they are definitely not an eye strain.

Seeing as I have sat down with a friend and beaten both games in a single sitting (as in played Gears 1 from start to finish in one go, then several months later played Gears 2 from start to finish in one go. Actually, on Saturday we did the same with Army of Two, and a month ago with Resident Evil 5. I can really recommend trying playing games like this some time, it's really one of the most entertaining ways to play. But I'm getting sidetracked here, eventually I'll have to close this parenthesis and remember what the hell I'm talking about.).

@Leanid: Of course people shoot outside of VATS...have you played the game? VATS is pretty limited untill you get to the highter levels. Even the DLC adds some harder baddies that VATS barely works on...those damned albino radscorpions for one. that's teh beauty of Fallout 3 though...you can do it how you want. You do level up your aim by killing things and getting points, in or out of VATS.

Guns in RPG's could make sense....but sound pretty lame compared to SHooters with RPG elements.

@All the ladies love Mister Jack!: That's the worst thing to happen to online shooters unless there's a matchmaking system involved, which has its own problems too. A player should not get anything that relates to the gameplay depending on how they play, or even how well they play. Success in shooters should not be based on stats or gear.

Keep an open mind people - he's talking about FPS games with RPG elements. There are already many action games that have RPG elements that aren't slow such as God of War. Cliff just wants that more in shooter games. Think CoD4 MP but in SP format (or his own example, Bioshock).

A 12 hour RPG? At the rate current FPS games are moving that's what it will turn into.

When developers start making games with length with multiplayer on the side instead of relying on the length of a game on multiplayer then we might be going somewhere.

Ugh no thanks. There are certain reasons why I play FPSs and that's for the fast paced gameplay. RPG mixed shooters slow down the game too much. If I have to pause the action to virtually roll a dice you've lost me. I have other games to play for that.

Half the reason I like to play shooters online is getting XP and the feeling of being rewarded with better stuff the longer you play. I am in total agreement with Cliffy on this one. RPG/Shooter hybrids like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 are some of the best games in years. I'd definitely want to see more of them.

Welcome to 2001, Deus Ex did the fps rpg hybrid very well. Its sad that no games since can match it.

I'm all for shooter RPGs but I can't help but feel if the future is indeed shooter RPGs that 9/10 will have either a)bad shooting mechanics b)bad RPG mechanics or c)both.

It's early days yet but I have yet to play a shooter rpg that delivers on both aspects.

So kinda like Fallout 3? RPG shooters are different from the two genres alone, but together and done right could be fun.
