Dungeons & Dragons Online’s Freedom Dated

Turbine has selected an early August date for the release of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited, the update that switches the massively multiplayer D&D game to a free-to-play business model.

Early August brings massive changes to Dungeons & Dragons Online, with a new class, new dungeons, and a new free-to-play, micro-transaction-based financial model that should bring curious new players to the game in droves. But when exactly in early August? Let’s ask DDO Unlimited executive producer Fernando Paiz.

“The DDO Unlimited Beta has been a huge success and we want to thank all of our players who have participated to help us make this the best free-to-play game on the market. On August 6th we are going to change what it means to be free-to-play with the most immersive, action-packed and full-featured MMO that provides players with a choice in how they play and pay for the game.”

Paiz is referring to the VIP subscription, which allows those used to paying for the game a way to continue to do so without experiencing harsh subscription withdraw.

So who is planning on giving the game a go once it costs nothing more than hard disk space to play?

Kotaku AU Note: This initially applies only to North America. For now other territories will still use the subscription model.

I might try and see if a few friends want to play and we can all start together. I tried the trial several times by myself and just never got into it. Maybe with some friends it'll be different.

@Big Ups To Atlus: In a previous article, they stated: "Free players will be able to join the game, create characters, and level all the way up to 20..."

be forwarned all who plays (at the current moment) you need points to unlock the ablity to level pass 4. you can do quest to get these points but that takes forever so unless they give you points upfront you'll be taking longer then it takes to reach level 4 to get pass it

@Etheris: Same here, except I was so impressed and had a few friends to play it with so I actually played it for a few months.

I got sick of subscriptions once I paid like 60ish dollars on it and decided I did not play the 'MMO' aspects of the game much so I quit when it would have cost me about the same as a console game.

@Qix213: Same here. I'll try it just because I love D&D so much, but I doubt I'll enjoy it.

  • Qix213

I'll try it, but I'm pretty doubtful about playing to more than a a few times. I'd rather just pay for a game I enjoy than get one free that I don't want to play in the first place.

    I'm giving a go! I don't have enough MMO's!

@Hexidecimal: I think we must have played different games. I was in the original beta, then played for a while when it was released. At the time, the character animations and textures were some of the best out there (especially at high settings), everything in the world screamed DnD (which is a good thing). Game play was great (completely party focused, but hey it's DnD, don't know too many Solo pen-and-paper sessions on the go).

My only complaint was the UI, they had a lot of good ideas, but I wasn't completely sold on the UI, it was functional and that's about it.

Also, at the time, water texture was the best I seen, they might of had a bit too much shine (read lens flair)on the armour, that's about it.

@ShaggE wants to join the Egg Council.: I seen what you did, and giggled.. and was saddened by those that missed the joke.

@Trepie: I enjoyed Guild Wars quite a bit.

I'll at least download it and try it out. I played in the beta back in the day and it was ok.

I enjoyed DDO not enough to pay for it.

    But enjoyable nonetheless.

By far one of the worst MMOs I have ever played. Character animations are choppy and uninspired, textures are boring and lack luster at the games highest settings. Game play is terrible, and the UI is slightly worse then that.

Even free this game isn't worth the time, Runes of Magic is better done for a free MMO.

@Trepie: I was joking. (see "ah but I keed the Fernando" for details) :P

  • Trepie

@ShaggE wants to join the Egg Council.: If you've ever played free MMOs before, then you'd probably change your tune. DDO promises to give the quality of a pay to play MMO for free. This isn't something seen often, if at all depending on your opinion on other free MMOs. Runes of Magic is about the only close one I can think of, and it still seems to be lacking something.

  • notBowen

@ShaggE wants to join the Egg Council.: I think he meant the lesser known MMO version of the definition which altered it slightly to "playing, for free, a crap game."

I've been thinking starting an MMO again.

I don't want to play WoW again because at some point my account was hacked and whoever did it got me banned in a way they never want me back, jokes on them though! I had only a level 35-ish character with absolutely nothing! Haha!

    I wanted to go back to FFXI with their new character reactivation service but I can't get the characters I actually leveled and cared about back. I can get back every mule and every character I created and deleted day one to try to get on the server I wanted but not the characters I want on the same exact content ID. ;_;

Tried Age of Conan, my computer didn't like it and it wasn't that much fun anyways.

Guess I'll give DDO a go!

  • Stevetrop

I haven't played D&D in about 10 years now. I used to play AD&D religiously at the local game and comic store. I think I may give this a shot and if I like what I see I may become a paying customer.

  • ShaggE wants to join the Egg Cou

"...change what it means to be free-to-play"

I hope not. The current definition is just fine. (playing... for free.)

Ah, but I keed the Fernando.

  • DrunkAus

I would get back into it probably after enjoying the trial AGES ago, but its US only aint it? Afaik I have a EU account.

  • Etheris

Hazaa! I played the trial a few years ago, enjoyed it (Mostly because I'm a D&D nerd), but I am Pay to Play MMO resistant.

  • biggerx

    @Etheris: I didn't even know there was a D&D Online.
