Expecting 5 Million Copies Of Dragon Quest IX Shipped
With 2.3 million copies sold in its first week, Dragon Quest IX is already a smash hit. Square Enix shipped 3 million copies at launch to ensure everyone who wanted the game could purchase it.
But Square Enix isn’t stopping there.
Square Enix president Yoichi Wada told the Japanese press, “We’re looking at reaching over 5 million copies of Dragon Quest IX shipped.” Wada went on to say that he hopes this will correspond to breathing life into the entire Japanese game industry.
In spring 2008, the exec hinted that it was possible to ship ten million copies of DQIX.

@Witzbold: Well no doubt it is popular - you couldn't walk more than 10 meters in Tokyo without seeing an advertizement for it. Never saw 7/11 advertize anything that aggressively.
Turning that around though, if any store would put that much advertizement in anything, they must have been sure that they will sell.

@excel_excel: Yea I figured that as well, but hoping to outperform the best selling game in the series by a million units is pretty ambitious. I don't think it's impossible and I hope they succeed, as I love Dragon Quest. If they do it might be a pretty strong motivation for other companies to move their key titles to the DS

@beril: He means in japan. I see DQ IX staying in the charts for a long while! When is the english release anyway?
@Witzbold: I'm looking forward to multiplayer, can't wait for that bad boy!
DQIX already passed 3 million. It did so last Wednesday
http://www.rpgamer.com/news/japan/mb071709.html
"Enterbrain had the sales figures out for DQIX out by Tuesday, and guess how many units were sold, just on Saturday and Sunday? Two million, three hundred forty-three thousand, four hundred forty. By Wednesday, it had officially passed the three million mark."

@Slagathorian: Uh, I already said that. Right up there. Where I said they're as different as any fighting game release. Because they are. The basics are the same but the outlying stuff has pretty much all been switched up.
And Islandkiwi, an "informed approach" is still worthless. You're coloring your own expectations with somenoe else's.
You know why games don't sell very well outside of huge releases these days? Because a lot of games don't even get reviewed. Thus, people like you never give them even a single glance, let alone buy them, even though they could be better than your big title. But how would you know? You're only paying attention to how everyone else thinks.
The "games cost a lot' thing is a worthless argument. It's no excuse for just letting someone else pick your games.
@Ueziel: Having played every DQ game, and as a DQ fanatic, I can honestly say that they are about as different as the madden iterations we've received. Now I'm not saying that that's a bad thing, but lets call a spade a spade.
@Ueziel: I'll answer that! Games are expensive. I'm buying games based on other peoples opinions because they've played it, and I haven't.
Here's my routine. I'll go to game reviews done by journalists first. I will read the entire review. I compare those scores (and the reasons for those scores) with other professional reviews.
Then, I take a look at user comments. What does Joe Gamer think of the game? If he finished it in 6 hours and he's done with it, odds are I'm renting, not buying.
At 60 bucks a pop, I'm not randomly buying games. I choose to take a more informed approach.
Islandkiwi
I wonder if he means in japan alone or worldwide. Worldwide it shouldn't be that hard, considering that DQVIII almost reached that number, if it's japan alone it's quite an ambitious goal but it might not be impossible if the game sees some of the DS-legs effect. I'm guessing it will almost reach 3 million in it's second week
beril
I know a way to ship out 5 million easily. Hurry up with the international versions and ship 1-2 million copies out internationally so I can buy the game already!
chronomasakari
@Archaotic: 5 million shipped and 5 million sold are different things. He wants 5 million shipped, meaning that they made 5 million Ds cartridges and shipped them off to retailers, not 5 million in sales.
Either way though, 5 million sales isn't far off, a few years? Probably not nearly that long, 2 million were pre-orders alone. They can also count on maybe close to a million on international sales, so 5 million in either ship or sales is not a far off goal
chronomasakari
@meowN: Dude, how did you edit your comment that long ago?
@Archaotic:
Curse you edit button! This fight is so hard to understand! >.
@Witzbold:It seems to have caused 2chan to rage and anything that pisses off that segment makes me smile.
@Witzbold: You do realize I'm not a TOTAL asshole, right? Not to mention I'm having one of the worst weekends of my entire life right now. :[
I was just going to say that 5m lifetime sales doesn't seem too far off in a few years' time, but it'd probably take a while to reach that.
But, you know, I'm some sort of supervillain out to ruin everyone's fun or something like that, right? Yeah, I guess that's it.
wait till nintendo helps advertise dragon questX
could you imagine if DQX becomes the wii's FFVII
@kyon-kyon:
i dunno imo dragonquest isnt that milked
but your right about new ips
we something new
something near chrono trigger
@Alternate: Id say SquareEnix took a big enough risk with changing the formula a bit with DQIX. So at least they managed to set some sort of example for other companies to follow. Granted its not the hugest step forward it still is one foot forward which does mean a lot in the way this society works.
Well still seems like most places have quite the healthy stock since the game is still on the shelves. But the sales numbers speak the truth, the game does seem to be popular.
Granted the purists are still pissed off, then again I think its more some folks just forgot to have fun.
Wouldnt be suprised though if the game did reach 3 million at least though. Since the multi-play is quite addictive.
Also lets see if Arch will be mature enough to stay away from this story since most of the time all he does is complain in a passive aggressive manner about Square Enix / Dragon Quest / DS(i) or all of the above.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: I loved the EVO finals as well. So intense to the very last round, I haven't been that excited watching a tournament stream since the days of the CGS finals almost a year ago.
meowN
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Here goes.
Dee! Dee! Dee! Dee! DeeDEE DeeDEE DeeDEE DeeDEE!
It's getting better all the time!...
Hope that helps. :)
If by "breathing life" he means, keeping the general Japanese gaming populace satisfied but generally overall not moving the bar forward at all, then he's right on the ball. That is exactly what will happen.
Also, may refer to his pockets being lined with money.
Alternate
Well its seems like "Imperial Hot" is still up to no good beaten old franchises to death. Maybe one day we will see a brand new IP that doesn't suck.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: I really dislike Justin Wong so I was really happy. I would have been more happy had Sanford used Cammy against him in their match though. Sanford's Cammy against Dan from Japan was ridiculous.
@vid3oman64: None of them are identical aside from maybe 1 and 2. They all have just as much as differentiating themselves as any major release of a fighting game.
I don't know why someone else's opinions on a game would sway you to pick up a game though.
@(Zombie) Goldwings: That's really the main reason I haven't played a single Dragon Quest game. They all just seem nigh identical. I can't understand the market for the games, even in Japan. They've put up with every incarnation, and for some reason have... adored it every time, whereas I can't look at the cover of any of them and nearly vomit from the memories of horrible DBZ dubs. That's not the games' faults, but the back of the box and reviews don't seem to help.
If I see some reviews saying this one is worthwhile, I'll pick it up. Er, if it comes to America...?
vid3oman64
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: SF4 Finals at EVO was the most intense match I've ever seen. Especially the last round of the first set. It was so crazy, went all the way into the final match of the second set.
I'd rather see a new unique game that helps rejuvenate life to the Japanese game industry, because honestly who didn't see Dragon Quest become a smash hit?
Oh well at least it helped (the DS(i) anyway).
I'm sorry to put you on the spot, but can you guys post some really happy news?
Something to make up for EVO...
