Explore NeoTokyo In Half Life 2
Colourful cityscapes hide dark intriguing in the streets of NeoTokyo, the newly released Source mod freely available to anyone with Steam and a Souce SDK title.
Nearly five years in the making by Studio Radi-8, NeoTokyo borrows inspiration from Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell and Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira, plunging players into a future Japan fraught with strife both internally and geo-politically. When an attempt to alter Japan’s constitution to allow the country to perform military actions outside of its borders fail, the military attempts to overthrow the government. Their initial attempts fail, but with the formation of Group Six, a military force sworn to protect the constitution, tensions are again on the rise.
The game looks completely amazing. As a fan of works like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, and many others, this is a world I’ve wanted to explore for a long time. Of course, once I do get in there I will be shot dead in seconds, but I’ll really absorb the spot where my corpse lands.
Check out the official trailer below, and hit up the link to experience NeoTokyo for yourself.

@AZoMBiE: Jump exploit? Did you even take notice of the aux bar? Recon can perform 2 long jumps in a row, then there's no more jumping until enough points are regenerated. There are a lot of narrow passages where those jumps will get you nowhere. For compensation recons don't hold out many hits anyway.
The vision mode of the recon is obviously a bit out of place because the maps aren't that dark at all, but assault and support are something else. Especially the support unit with its vision is a big thread against camo enemies (which is why it can't use camo and is slow as hell).
Seriously, play the game more than a few minutes before judging it.
You guys need to check out dystopia. You can get it over steam, and its a great team based cyberpunk mod. It's a little grittier, and a bit less asian, but has alot of common elements, like stealth etc. and is amazingly polished and balanced for a mod.
skuddington
Actually, it's quite nicely balanced.
Recon get the limited boosted jump and higher mobility but only a light helmet. Their optical camo lasts a while.
Support have the heaviest armour but no camo and no sprint at all. But if a recon is unlucky, they could empty a clip into a support and not take it down. But the support does have Thermal imaging too...
Assault has the most weapon choice, some armour, and a HE grenade, some sprint and optical camo.

Gorgeously detailed maps... I've never been to Japan but i wonder why a previous poster was dissing the paraphernalia.
OrientalHero
Half Life 2/Team Fortress 2 PC owners get so much while the 360 owners get neglected. I hate the world.
@jookie: It's pretty much just a counterstrike with a bunch of goofy looking guns.
MaikenX
It's absolutely fantastics. We at TDRgaming are hosting servers over for it and they have been filled to the brinm. It's epic, fun, fast pace and most importantly relies heavily on teamwork, whether your holding the ghost or supporting the ghost carrier communication is absolutely key.
If you up for a game pm me on steam: dantheman18.
@Toastbusters:
Yes, yes it is...
HepCat
It's a great idea, but I'm hugely disappointed that it doesn't have a single player story mode. The online multi-player looks like it plays great, and I've been wanting a game based on Japanese Cyberpunk for awhile, but aren't there enough online FPSs at the moment? Anywho, here's hoping it gets popular enough for some company to buy it and and have them make a story mode/series for it. Until then I guess I'll just have to wait for Deus Ex 3, or at least the HD texture of the original.
HepCat
@Glasseater: He's obviously a douche anyways so who cares... talking to yourself in a post? Wow...
d1gw33d
@Toastbusters: Timesplitters 2's New Neo Tokyo or whatever was so, so awesome.
TETSUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
?
What's happeninggg?

@kipperminge:
The elusive Black Mesa, when will you be mine :P
mikeck is too orangey for crows
@Char Aznable says, Hail to the King of Pop:
I just wish Monolith would stop fuckin around and do a sequel to Shogo. Fucking cock teasers with those parts in FEAR 2...
televizor
@supo: ah Black Mesa, i hope its coming soon it looks amazing
@fuchikoma: i loved shogo back in the day, i got it bundled with my first logitech gaming mouse ;)
Looks like it might play a bit like Dystopia... this is a good thing.
its pretty but its just cs with weaboos
Have been playing this mod for a couple of hours and I must say I like it. The gameplay is pretty simple but encourages teamplay a lot. It's one of the few games I've seen people cooperate for real on public servers.
kerryo
@Angel D. Torres Morales: You're supposed to launch it via Steam. It will show up on your "My Games"-list.
kerryo
@MoeB: And on the weekends, you like to punch babies in the nuts, right?
DocSeuss
@wahrugene: Agree. I've been playing online non stop and the only game i can relate it to is SWAT 4.
Excellent game.
Jellopnik
The pseudo-Japanese gibberish they have littered about makes it look amateurish and ridiculous. Who comes up with this garbage?
How do you get this? Do I need to have half life installed or sommin?
Is anybody having problems when installing on Windows 7? I don't get a .exe file or any file to launch the game after I installed it.. :(
Angel D. Torres Morales
@Glasseater:
But it was a level. Which looks very much like that screenshot!
And Timesplitters 2 was awesome. One of the best multiplayer titles for PS2.
Cov
Gratz to the team for finally releasing, and I am loving the the gameplay!
MountainCool
"...freely available to anyone with Steam and a souce SDK title."
SOURCE, please.
@Glasseater: and the fact you cant even play this like a game of counter strike, the camo and visions can be keys to turning battles.
Vintage
@fuchikoma: Shogo was freaking awesome.
@domhnall: Agreed. Some places just felt like an ordinary city with some japanese writing laying around at random.
It had to be darker, claustrophobic and with 3x more neon lights.
Fernando Jorge
@fuchikoma: Both of those games are great (and I still have Shogo in my collection).
@Sir-Lucius has a level 93 Ubersaw:
In the meantime, I'd recommend a classic FPS called Shogo
or if you want something different, Ghost in the Shell for PSX
They finally released it?!!!
i thought this came out years ago? i remember stumbling upon the site. a game based in the world of Akira would be fantastic.
pandafresh
@Perfectnumpty: This has changed the way I look at everything in life.
There hasn't been a shooter this COLORFUL since No One Lives Forever.
I know they say that GitS is an "influence" but it doesn't take place in Tokyo - not that that matters, I'm just a huge nerd for those kinds of things.
Looks awesome, very nice texture work. I'm sure the character animations aren't quite as cheesy as they appear in the vid. I think I may just go install this now.
I remember playing this when it was a UT2k3 mod. Good stuff.
jbiller
@Revenge_of_Nekojin: It's a Ghost In the Shell thing. A lot of things in NeoTokyo are influenced by GITS
Mark Bayani
@Vecha: Wishing Prototype would go down in price!: A good HL2 single player mod is Curse: Episode One, and there will be more episodes soon too!
@Glasseater: Agreed, this is much more of a teamwork/stealth based game. Just played it for a bit, it's gonna take a bit of getting used to.
lolgreg prays to Joe Pesci
Oh, well five years after I first got excited for this mod... I'm glad it's coming out.
MichaelBrazell
@MoeB:
more like Swat 4 multiplayer
wahrugene
@PSOCecil: its a shame that you'll pass on a great game because there is no single player. "those multiplayer only" mods is what made Valve what it is today.
Glasseater
@Mr. F: the game really shines when you use a mic to communicate and teamwork
Glasseater
@Toastbusters: no this is a fullblown mod that has nothing to do with timesplitters
Glasseater
@MoeB: you should give it a try before passing it off as a css clone, by you standards, anything with guns and round based gameplay = css
Glasseater
@KeeganTheBrain: A single player version of NeoTokyo would be digital sex.
Sir-Lucius has no pictchar!
@AZoMBiE: long jumping isnt an exploit, the scout is supposed to move that fast. you seem to have not even given the game a chance, seeing as you think vison modes are useless...
Glasseater
anyone know the name of the song in the video?
Been waiting for this for years, so far not impressed.
The visuals and sounds are great, the gameplay tho not so much.
A jump exploit that lets you move Quake3 fast.. vision modes with no real use, active camo that only lasts a few seconds.. 2 classes can use the [AWP]..
Just a GITS skin/sound/map pack for Counter Strike TBH
AZoMBiE
@Toastbusters: Indeed, I especially loved playing as that monkey :D
SuperZombieMonkey
@NeoTurbo:
@ヽ(´ー`)ノ (NO MEANS YES):
@KeeganTheBrain:
@Markarian:
Yeah, as my name would suggest this is exactly right up my alley, but like Fahey's post implied, it's the kind of place you'd want to go and take in the scenery and check it out, except good luck doing that when no matter where you go, you get your brains blown out if you let your guard down for a second. :/
I might grab it to go sightseeing in single player, but this kind of multiplayer is really unappealing to me - though it looks like they did it very well on a technical level.
@Glasseater: I heard of this mod in 2004 and I thought it was dead. Is this the one where if you shoot a guy from the side and you hit his arm, the bullet would past through and hit his chest and other arm?
Austin Kruckmeyer
Kotaku should advertise source mods more often.
@NeoTurbo: MP kills it for me.
@dsectric: In his defense, it is similar to CS, but there's much more focus on stealth tactics and teamwork than any round of Counter Stike I've ever played. The camo system alone really adds a whole level of depth not found in CS.
Sir-Lucius has no pictchar!
@Mr. F: Yeah on first glance/play through I was thinking "isn't this just a sci-fi CS?" But after spending a little more time with it it's so much more. There's so much more focus on stealth/tactics than CS.
Sir-Lucius has no pictchar!
:/ Super high quality mod, very impressive trailer, looks fun as hell...
And then they put nipples on the robo-torso thing you're supposed to be capturing. I don't get it. There's no point in having them there, it just seems totally out of place and juvenile. I got nothing against nipples, just don't know why they were put in.
I'm still downloading this right now though. It looks awesome.
Revenge_of_Nekojin
@domhnall: It does and doesn't. Certain maps really feel like you're in the Ghost in the Shell world, others not so much. One in particular is in a hangar with for all intents and purposes Fuchikoma/Tachikoma tanks.
Sir-Lucius has no pictchar!
I think this is the song.... I'm not sure though
Good stuff.
@mixmastermind: Tetsuooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo......!
Kanedaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...!
Why would I wanna go there? Neo Tokyo is about to explode.
@soviet_: But it doesn't look like it captures the aesthetic of any of its influences. I read the description and watched the whole trailer, and not for an instant did a get any Otomo/Shirow feel for it. Too bad. Also, I know this is a source mod, etc. but it does look terribly dated.
@dsectric: Because Counter Strike is the most famous multiplayer Source Engine mod around?
As said in a previous article.. wow.. seriously this looks incredible and honestly, I'd like to see what this team has to offer if they get some more budget and their own engine...
@PhilipVanLuke:
Check if you own the Source SDK Base in the tools tab of Steam.
When you say Source SDK does that mean this will work with TF2? I dont not have orange box on my PC only stand alone TF2 but this looks interesting and ill DL it if it works.
PhilipVanLuke
@StormTec: But it's really not. Why is it that whenever someone sees a mod where you only have 1 life, they immediately assume "COUNTER STRIKE"
dsectric
@NeoTurbo: I agree, but sadly the truth of it is that Single Player mods take so much more work and don't have as much replay value. Think of all the writing, acting, scripting and other extra content needed to make a decent SP mod. All for something folks will play a few times if you're lucky. I'm not happy about it, but I can understand why.
That said, I might just load this up and play on an empty server just to ogle the maps. Looks wonderful.
@undefined: It's all composed by Ed Harrison. Here's the whole OST:
[cdbaby.com]
Bought it myself a few months back, its amazing! And the name of the song used in the trailer is Departure, its on the second disc.
@NeoTurbo: Aww, boo. By the description I would've guessed singleplayer and I was getting super-excited, too.
ヽ(´ー`)ノ (NO MEANS YES)
Huge fan of GITS. I really wish there was a good game coupled with the movie / series. Everything that came out with its name is garbage.
That being said, multiplayer maps & weapons may be inspired by those works, but it fails to capture the actual heart of those series without some kind of SP experience.
oh wow looks amazing - must play :D
Wheema
I thought it was a Weeaboo Counter-Strike, but it plays much more realistically and tactically than CS.
I love the fact they have it up on MU. 2 MB/sec? Yes, please.
lolgreg prays to Joe Pesci
This looks fucking awesome! Now I have to install Half Life on my work PC to get this going. The music by the way was incredible. Reminded me of mirror's edge for some reason.
If you look carefully on the inside of the train you can see a little poster of this;
Perfectnumpty
@All the ladies love Mister Jack!:
yeah would also like to know the track name if was composed by an artist.
Wow, this looks really cool, I wish there were more mods like this and... wait? It's another one of those 'multiplayer only' mods? I'll pass.
Whoa that looks awesome and has a nicely coloured environment. Everyday I feel like I should just hunker down and find a decent graphics card somewhere to play some of these games for PC.
It was really...okay. Promptly uninstalled it though.
@Vecha: Wishing Prototype would go down in price!: Sorry, MP. I was hoping it was Singleplayer too though.
Am glad to see the team had pulled through and finished up their project!
Highly talented folk.
Grey if you see this message congrats man!
Unfortunately, it really does trike me as just CS with pretty maps...
StormTec
1) This is NOT just Counterstrike
2) This looks amazing, especially for a free game
3) Ghost in the Shell FTW
@All the ladies love Mister Jack!: they made it them selfs, Check out the site for the OST
Glasseater
One of the best mods I've ever had the pleasure to work with. Give this a try guys, you wont be disappointed.
Glasseater
@MoeB: Not really, it plays and feels more like R6V.
Does anybody recognize this trailer music or is it something they composed themselves specifically for this game? I like it, whatever it is.
But better....
Dash_Stryker
@NeoTurbo: iT'S MULTIPLAYER
Dash_Stryker
Wasn't this a level in Timesplitters 2?
Also Timesplitters 2 was awesome.
Toastbusters
The game is visually stunning, it really is. Just walking around the maps and looking at all the detail is great.
Soundtrack is really very good too
@NeoTurbo: Nevermind, after watching the trailer it's obviously multiplayer.
Man, and I was hoping for a good single player mod like They Hunger. T_T
NeoTurbo
It's just counter-strike.
MoeB
@[Dextr]:
Damn...there aren't as many singplayer mods anymore...
Wow 5 years eh? Definitely going to give it a try.
Now all we need is Black Mesa to release..
supo
To those above: multiplayer.
Singleplayer right? Awesome.
Hope to see it go somewhere competitively.
jookie
Is this single player or one of those multiplayer mods?
It looks single player, but I just want to make sure.
